The non-profit Elder Services office opened on Nantucket in 1974 with its nutrition programs. Contracts for Meals on Wheels, a national program, are put out to bid. For 15 years the contract was given to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, but last year it began experiencing plant issues with its kitchen and the award went to John Keane who, to everyone’s delight, is successfully preparing the meals in his Kitty Murtaugh’s kitchen. Well before it became the

Mitchell, whose daughter rose to fame by

Mitchell felt his private school would flounder with

free education as the alternative on island.

After two years teaching up to 200 students at the public

school, Mitchell resigned and purchased land for $30 on

Howard Street from a trader, Edward Barney, and his wife,

Elizabeth Ann Barney, to build a schoolhouse.

Instead of a large enrollment, Mitchell admitted 25

girls and 25 boys to a school he had envisioned as a

meeting place of communal, informal learning.

“I always looked back on this school with satisfac-

tion,” Mitchell said. “We met together as common

friends and for mutual improvement.”

The school failed in 1833 for a variety of reasons,

including Mitchell’s challenge of raising 10 children,

his unpopular belief in the virtue of an alleged arsonist,

community-wide disagreement over segregation in

public schools, and tuition costs, Finger speculated.

The school’s closure precipitated its sale to J.H.

Spalter the year it closed. Sometime between 1833 and

1838, Spalter moved the building to where the Maria

Mitchell Library is today, at 2 Vestal St. A school oper-

ated in Mitchell’s former school building at its new

address well into the late 1800s.

In 1852, the building was renovated, but to what extent is

not known. Finger guesses the work would have been mini-

mal due to the high cost of shipping building materials to the

island and a steep drop in the island’s population to coincide

with the decline of whaling. Although it is unknown whether

the building remained a place of higher education in the 19th

century, its next use is well documented.

In 1902, Maria Mitchell’s three cousins began craft-

ing a natural science tribute to their distinguished family

member. Lydia structured and advertised the memorial

idea. Eliza became the first treasurer. Mary served as the

first curator and summer program director. The cousins

secured professors and alumnae from Maria’s alma mater,

Vassar Collage, to form an “organizing committee.”

In a year’s time, the sisters created the association,

took a donation of Maria’s scientific library of papers,

books and research materials, acquired two small tele-

scopes, including the one Maria discovered her comet

with in 1847, attracted 220 members and adopted

bylaws. The bylaws included the stipulation that all

officers and managers within the organization have

Nantucket or Vassar connections.

That library began as barely a room on the first floor

of 2 Vestal St. This changed in 1919 when Mrs. Irene A.

Woodbridge donated part of her 7 Milk St. property to

the Association, according to the Preservation Institute:

Nantucket. Now the Hinchman House, the property

houses Maria Mitchell’s natural science department. In

1919, the fledgling nonprofit also bought William

Mitchell’s former schoolhouse July 30.

The association dedicated the library July 15, 1920,

and opened it to the public for research, study, classes

and lectures. As the collection grew, so did the need for

more space. In 1934, it built the “Wing” onto the south

side of the library building.

“Alfred F. Shurrocks designed the structure, and in

1933, after an expenditure of eleven thousand dollars,

built the book stack with a main floor and basement

now known as the ‘Fireproof Wing.’” said Thomas E.

Drake in his historical treatment, “The First Half

Century of the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association.”

The concrete and stucco addition was ideal for stor-

ing Maria Mitchell’s personal library, family archives

and the Maria Mitchell Association archives, and spe-

cial collection books.

“The simplicity of the library building has a quiet and

peaceful dignity that symbolizes the practical nature of its

contents and at the same time the character of the woman

to which it is a fitting memorial,” according to a Historical

American Building Survey report.

Unfortunately, the physical contents of the library

contributed to its undoing with the onset of the digital

age. With much of the information in the library avail-

able online and at other locations, and the Maria

Mitchell Association decided it could no longer afford

to staff the library on a daily basis. The library closed

to the public in 2005.

“The decision was made by the board because of the

reduction in the staff,” said Janet Schulte, the associa-

tion’s executive director. “For the interns who were

using the library and the public, they were finding

other ways of accessing the information, so the collec-

tion had become obsolete.

“There wasn’t a high circulation rate, so it wasn’t eco-

nomically feasible,” Schulte continued, “but the collec-

tion is available if people want to come and use it.”

The library is open by appointment. Some of the

collection is being moved from the Wing to the base-

ment of Drake Cottage, the association’s main office,

because the addition’s waterproof qualities have failed.

“We started last year and got grants from the M.S.

Worthington Foundation to buy the proper shelving

and create and install a climate control system, but we

have to clean everything and the reason we’re doing

that is the Wing’s climate is unstable right now because

the building had some work done to it,” Finger said.

A campus master planning effort initiated in 2007 is on

hold while the association designs and builds its new

aquarium/natural science center at 33 Washington St.

“Our attention really has gone to the project down

on Washington Street,” Schulte said.

The association is unsure of the future of the build-

ing and its uses, but its valuable contents will remain

accessible, Schulte said.

“The special collection we plan to retain in perpetu-

ity because it’s such a historic collection.”

noting that while it is not as high profile as

Meals on Wheels, the Elder Services Home

Care Program actually requires more time

and money than any other. “The overall

goal of all services we provide in the com-

munity is keeping seniors in their own home

and as independent as possible.”

Members of the Nantucket Association

of Real Estate Brokers donate their time to

deliver meals throughout the year.

Hunt was born and raised in Pittsfield,

Mass. and came to the island in 1983 from

Middlesex, N.J. where her family later relo-

cated and where Hunt worked as a restau-

rant manager. She had known her future

husband since they were teens growing up

in Pittsfield, and she moved to Nantucket to

join him and be wed.

When Hunt learned she was expecting

the couple’s second child she was working

at a Pleasant Street convenience store. After

her daughter Tonia’s birth, she met Jean

Egan, who was with the hospital’s home

health department. Hunt had been a nurses’s

aide for many years, and Egan encouraged

her to apply for that position at the hospital.

After several years doing that, Hunt decided

to open her own private duty nursing

agency providing services to the Elder

Services office, which, in a fateful circle,

was then led by Egan. She worked with

Egan for five years, returned to the hospital

to establish its Cottage Care Unlimited,

went out on her own as a private duty

nurse’s aide, spent some time as assistant

manager at The Nobby Shop, and 11 years

ago was hired as the Elder Services nutrition

coordinator. That position is currently held

by Mark Budaj, adored by the seniors he

serves and respected by Hunt as an irre-

placeable sidekick.

“We make a great team. I could not do

what I do if I didn’t have him,” said Hunt,

who was the coordinator for three years

before being made director. “It’s extremely

difficult for me to be the director on one

hand — which means I supervise and cover

for Mark, have to attend meetings, do pub-

lic speaking, be available to the community

— and then switch hats and be the case

manager for 50 elders in our community.”

In her precious free moments, Hunt is a

voracious reader, indulges her passion for

animals including her four dogs and three

cats and thrives on spending time with

Tonia and her first born, son Brendon, his

wife Julie and Hunt’s first granddaughter,

three and a half-year-old Kaelee (another is

due the end of October).

“I’m so blessed that they are all here. I

get to have my granddaughter any time I

want. I’m pretty lucky.”

Though she puts in long hours and

never hesitates to listen to or counsel any

elder who needs a willing ear or assis-

tance, Hunt has no plans to retire.

“I’ve got a ways to go, and besides I

love my job. If you love what you do it

makes it pretty easy to get up and come in

every day,” she said. “My greatest fulfill-

ments are the wonderful friends as well as

the knowledge I’ve gained from our elder

community — feeling as though I am able

to help them obtain their goals staying

home. I’m a strong advocate for many of

them. It makes me feel good about myself

that I can help others.”
