I’d seen the smoke for years, and

wondered as I made my way to

work if I’d left the stove on, and where

would I might sleeping that night.

But each time common sense smoth-

Nantucket Heathlands Partnership.

Of course, the NHP was doing a

prescribed burn somewhere on the

island, my rented house was not

engulfed in flames, my landlady not

on the warpath and a call from her

not imminent.

I’d written countless stories for

island newspapers about this practice

employed by the Nantucket Islands

Land Bank and the Nantucket

off bad plants to make room for the

rare and endangered ones. I’d even

been out to a burn or two, felt the

heat on my face, gagged on the

smoke and seen the flames ravage

scrub oak, pitch pine and huckleberry

all for a good cause.

But, never had I taken part in a burn

… until last fall when I found myself

underemployed and in need of some

hands-on experience for the book I’m

currently researching and writing, “A

Natural History of Nantucket.”

Yes, there is pay for a day’s work

and even lunch provided, but there is

also hard work and (gasp!) lots of

studying and tests to take before I

could loose my inner firebug.

Nantucket Islands Land Bank

Property Manager and Burn Boss,

Bruce Perry, had said to me in mid-

September: “Just get the disks from

and then you can come out and play

with us.”

the new Executive Director of the

little different from the minute I walked

into her office. She ushered me into a

Think About the Present

Think About the Future

Yours truly has gotten all into doing his civic duty of late. Case in

point, as I write this, my mind reflects back to the ballot I just cast

this morning in the local election. But my dealings in local goings-on

aren’t limited to just voting. You see, kids, I’m also helping out with

coaching the Nantucket High School sailing team. A couple of other

volunteer assistants and I are helping out Carolyn Grant, who’s a pret-

ty top-notch sailor herself.

Those of you who have sailed with me are no doubt now terribly

worried about the quality of racing technique the Whalers are getting

from me, but not to worry. I’m not allowed to do enough to do any seri-

ous damage to the quality of their collective technique. However, the

whole experience has taught me the importance of thinking to the

future while also planning for the present. Of course, this is a lesson

coaches the world over are already familiar with, but this is my first

foray into the profession. So bear with me.

Team racing — the kind of racing that most high school regattas

consist of — is a race between two teams of three boats each. The team

with the best finishing combination wins. Simple as that. You find your

six best sailors and put them on the boats and away they go. That’s the

part where you’re focused on the present.

The thing about sailing, though, is that it takes a little time to learn

to do it well. Just about anybody can take a few lessons and go out and

sail around the harbor. But to become a proficient – and, dare I say,

good – racer, you’ve got to have the experience. And the only way you

get the experience is by practicing. And that means that, in addition to

having your best sailors working together in practice, you need to have

some younger, less experienced sailors out there learning the necessary

skills so that they’ll be ready to take over when the older, more experi-

enced folks graduate and move on. That would be the whole looking-

towards-the-future part.

It’s a tough balance, to be sure, especially when you’ve got a limit-

ed number of boats that you can have on the water at any given time.

But we’re doing what we can to develop younger talent while building

on the existing skills of the older sailors. And at the risk of sounding

like I’m trying to segue into something here — which I am — the same

philosophy of focusing on both the present and the future hold true for

your house.

In the most basic sense, there are two kinds of repairs that need to

be done to houses, and they can be labeled as “present” and “future.”

Think of it like a car. Present repairs are like flat tires or bad alternators.

They’re pretty easy to spot, namely because your car isn’t going any-

where until you get them fixed. And that leads to the second character-

istic of present repairs, namely the fact that they tend to get fixed pret-

ty much right now.

Then there are those future repairs, which might also be called pre-

ventive maintenance. Changing the oil, for example, or flushing out the

radiator. These are things you don’t necessarily think about all the time,

because they’re not right in your face and they don’t make your car stop

dead in its tracks. The catch is, though, if you don’t do those repairs,

your car is going to get to the point where it does just that. And trust me

when I tell you that it’s not a good feeling when your car just kind of

freezes up and stops. Call it the voice of experience.

Houses are much like cars. There are those repairs that have to get

done right now – a light bulb burns out, a leaky faucet needs to get

replaced – because they’re right in your face and you know those things

are broken. So you fix them post-haste.

But then there are those things that are not quite so visible. When is

the last time you were down in the crawl space to check the pipes?

What about the lint filter on your dryer? Or the paint on your exterior

trim? All of those things and many more like them can be kept up and

maintained for a lot less money than what it’s going to cost to have a

sump pump to get water out from your basement that you didn’t know

was coming in because you never checked or to replace the rotten wood

that could have been prevented by a new coat of paint.

And yes, I realize there’s a lot to think about, especially when you’re

also trying to think about your job and your family and your everything

else. Luckily for all of us, there are plenty of talented folks right here

on Nantucket who know exactly what to look for and how to maintain

things so as to save you money down the road. Those talented folks are

worth their weight in gold when it comes to saving you from future

unexpected emergency expenses. So when you’re having the outdoor

shower turned on this spring, think about preventive maintenance and

have somebody check out the rest of your house. Then get yourself a

jacket with “Coach” embroidered on it.

NEWS REPORT

owned a real estate business,” she recalled recently,

“and I started off working with her and ended up part-

nering with her.” From there, she moved on to han-

dling the national marketing duties for ERA Realty.

Meanwhile, in another part of the state, a police

officer named Ryan Smith was buying property in a

fledgling real estate development on Nantucket, a plot

of land in a little enclave that would come to be called

Naushop. He bought the property in 1990 and built a

house in 1994, planning to eventually retire to the lit-

tle island once his days on the force had come to an

end. In 1996, Ryan met PJ, and the rest is wedded

bliss history. “We spent a lot of time here,” PJ said, “a

lot of it in the off-season.” Included in those visits

were events like Daffodil Festival and Christmas

Stroll, though at the time ,PJ had no idea she’d be

overseeing those events.

Fast-forward to November 29, 2010. PJ and Ryan

had moved to Nantucket full-time. It was four days

before Nantucket’s annual Christmas Stroll, one of

the busiest weekends on the island. What better time

for the new Executive Director of the Chamber of

Commerce to start her job? “It was interesting to say

the least,” PJ said of this baptism-by-fire. Her experi-

ences as a visitor to Strolls past gave her insight into

what to expect, and she already has ideas to modify

the existing program for this year’s Stroll: “We need

to keep things fresh and new,” she said, “in order to

keep visitors coming back. We need to give them new

reasons to keep coming.” Those reasons include

offering increased exposure to mid-island businesses

that oftentimes get overlooked by those shoppers who

are centered on shopping in town.

But before she gets there, she’s got to get through

Daffodil Festival first. “I’m looking forward to it,”

she said of the upcoming kick-off to the season.

“We’ve added motorcycles to the parade this year,

which was both a way of keeping the event fresh for

returning visitors and a response to requests from

motorcycle riders who’s asked to be included in the

past.” That willingness to listen to requests and, when

possible, to implement those requests are another

example of PJ’s ability to see things for what they can

become, rather than what they always have been.

Even the interior of the Chamber’s office has

undergone some changes under PJ’s watch. The new

boardroom — of which she is understandably proud

— is a fantastic space for Chamber meetings and

events, as well as for those Chamber members who

might need to use it.

But it’s not all fun and games and redecorating for

the Executive Director. “I’m responsible for main-

taining the membership value,” PJ said of her job

description. “And that includes marketing and pro-

moting tourism, fund-raising and generating activity

during the shoulder- and off-seasons. I work to help

our members grow their businesses. A lot of what we

do is advertising and promoting Nantucket through-

out the country and internationally.” And local busi-

nesses have reacted positively to PJ’s style; 15 new

businesses joined the Chamber in March of this year,

a number thought to be the highest single-month gain

in the organization’s recent history. “Providing value

to our customers is my priority, first and foremost,”

she added.

To that end, she’s made some structural changes to

the make-up of the Chamber committees, consolidat-

ing and modifying to better suit the needs of the

island. “One committee is in charge of student men-

toring at the high school,” she said. “We’re going to

be having a job fair for the students, both for summer

jobs and school-to-career opportunities.”

Additionally, the Chamber is sponsoring a series of

workshops and lectures for member businesses, with

topics that include such subjects as effective time

management, using social networking and customer

service.

All of this change doesn’t happen in a vacuum,

however, and PJ is quick to give credit to her staff and

the members of the Board of the Chamber of

Commerce, all of whom she said have been very sup-

portive of her and her visions of change. “The biggest

challenge we’re facing right now is getting the word

out,” she said. “We’ve got a long membership list and

we’re in regular communication with everyone, but

not everybody is aware of all the services and oppor-

tunities we’re offering.”

Something tells me that PJ has a vision for resolv-

Gallery is today.

At the new location, Maury plans to

offer paint, floor coverings, old antique

flooring, tile, wall-to-wall carpeting,

area rugs, soft window treatments,

housewares, kitchen cabinets, mattress-

es and box springs from Seeley and

Englander, and limited hardware items.

Additionally, the Emporium Home

Center will have its own in-house home

appliance center operated by KAM

Appliance, which is moving from its

current location at 117 Orange Street to

Maury’s new store.

Maury believes there is opportunity

— given the current gradual growth of

the economy — not just for an increase

in the market share, but new businesses.

“I think there’s been room for busi-

nesses to compete against Marine for

years,” Maury said. “You can’t even

park there half the time, so they’re

doing phenomenal business. “

Maury said he began to feel the need

for such a store while he and his wife,

Michelle, were running the retail side of

their son, Andrew’s, clothing store,

Nantucket Brand and, finding space on

another floor, began selling gifts and

limited home furnishings a la

Emporium. Eventually, after customers

kept asking for more of what the origi-

nal Emporium offered, Maury moved

this part of the store to a space across

from the Federal Street post office.

“I was in retail a long time ago,” he

said. “I kinda burnt out on retail early,

and then I got into the construction and

development, and then I kinda burnt out

on that.”

Soon after, there was retirement,

which meant six months on Nantucket

and six months in Florida, which wasn’t

working for Maury, so he got involved

with his son’s business.

“When my son started the Nantucket

Brand clothing, there wasn’t really

enough to fill the whole building, so I

put Emporium stuff in there and people

kept asking for and more and more,”

added Maury who told his real estate

broker friend, Michael Angelastro, to

let him know when a good space

became available for a revival of the

Emporium.

When 54 Old South Road opened up,

Maury jumped on it. He is using the

existing L-shaped structure on the .43-

of-an-acre lot with the plan to put park-

ing in the rear and landscaping between

the building and Old South Road.

Operating with a five-year lease with an

option to buy the property currently

assessed at $1,245,200, Maury may

expand the building, once he sees how

phase one pans out.

Should there be a phase two, it would

at least include an expanded hardware

section and maybe garden furniture.

This next step, however, will depend on

what Maury’s customers need once they

see the inventory of phase one. With the

renovation of the building coming

along, the sprinkler system going in

now, Maury is hoping to open in mid-

June.

“We’re going to be very competitive

and I think we’ll help the consumer on

the island because I think people [simi-

lar businesses] will have to get a little

more realistic,” said Maury.

Easier said than done. Steinauer, the

Massachusetts Audubon Society’s proper-

ty manager for its two sanctuaries on

Nantucket, told me I must go through the

15 wildland firefighting instruction mod-

ules, each of which required the passing of

a multiple choice test for which I had to

score at least 80 percent to be cleared to

move onto the next module. These cours-

es had names such as Suppression,

Communication and Mop-up, and

Principles of Wildland Fire Behavior.

Despite being classes I could work

through at home at my leisure, they were

quite challenging.

Most daunting of all, however, was taking

them on a friend’s PC laptop (the disks did

not work on my iMac) and having to learn

how use said laptop, download drivers for

my printer and generally navigate the

labyrinthian operating system from the mind

of Bill Gates. Jeezum crow, when do I get to

burn noxious weeds and invasive plants?

Passing all 15 courses with mostly hon-

ors, I stuck the disks along with copies of

the certificates into Ernie’s mailbox and

blasted off a triumphant email announcing

my wildland firefighting prowess, class-

room only. Next came clothing. I

should’ve known. You can’t torch the

moors or the sandplain grasslands without

the proper attire.

Enter NOMEX and leather. NOMEX is

flame retardant clothing that all wildland

firefighters must wear — either the stan-

dard forest green pants and yellow shirt,

which 98 percent of us wear, or in my big-

and-tall case, a one-piece bright yellow

uni that makes me look like I work at a car

wash or for a carpet cleaner.

Leather boots with a Vibram sole must

be worn. No steel shanks or toes that can

heat up and bake your feet like potatoes.

No synthetic materials or rubber that can

melt or catch fire. Then, there are leather

gloves, a hard hat with protective cotton

flaps that fold down to protect your face

and lungs from the heat, smoke and

flames. And finally, a good pair of sun-

glasses or goggles for eye protection. Now

can I play with matches, Mr. Perry?

Actually, the buildup and preparation

for getting out into the bush to burn is

exhaustingly cautious, but with good rea-

son. The NHP, which includes the island’s

conservation organizations and the

Nantucket Fire Department, has two burn

teams — the Land Bank and of the

Nantucket Conservation Foundation, both

of which do prescribed burns independent

of each other. The Land Bank burns on its

own and on Mass Audubon’s properties.

I have been burning with the Land Bank

From top: A thicket of scrub oak goes up in aball of flames just north of the Nantucket Golf

Club on marine heathland owned by theMassachusetts Audubon Society;

Eleven members of the Nantucket Islands LandBank burn crew that fired 13 acres in two plots

on April 10 in the Eastern Moors;

Land Bank burn crew member and NantucketLand Council Resource Conservationist Emily

MacKinnon using a drip torch full of a mixture ofdiesel and gasoline to light a section of a burnunit. MacKinnon’s green pants and yellow shirt-

jac are designed to be flame-retardant.

NEWS REPORT

crew, which operates with a 25-year conservation per-

mit from the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and

Endangered Species Program, which requires man-

agement of Smooth Hummocks to maintain these

grasslands. For the last 10 to 15 years, the Land Bank

has also been restoring former maritime shrublands

back into grasslands at the Head of the Plains and for

Mass Audubon. As part the Nantucket Golf Club’s

conservation permit, the Land Bank is restoring 1,000

acres in the eastern moors.

Because the burns are done in relatively close prox-

imity to developed areas, and because the volatility of

weather conditions on Nantucket can be extreme, the

utmost in pre-burn preparations are observed.

The ultimate goal is the continued burning of inva-

sive species on research plots for ongoing plant stud-

ies. The burns kill their buds, robbing them of their

growth energy supplies and essentially stunting their

growth to make way for rare plants and grasses such

as bushy rockrose, St. Andrew’s cross, eastern silvery

aster, New England blazing star, sandplain flax, little

bluestem grass and broom crowberry. Without a fire

prescription — a burn plan — no sparks hit the

ground.

All has to be right for a burn. Relative humidity

(moisture content in the air) must be between 45 to 55

percent. Too high (75 percent and higher) and the

brush will not burn. Too low (30 percent and lower)

and fire behavior becomes too extreme and unman-

ageable.

The mixing height — the top of the air mass being

filled with smoke — should be as high as possible.

Drier air means the smoke ascends higher before

moisture finally levels it off. The more moisture in the

air means the mixing height is lower, which blows

smoke into populated areas and generates complaints

that can ultimately shut a prescribed burn down.

Sunshine and warmth are also preferred burning

conditions because the sun continues to dry out the

fuels and maintains active fire behavior. And, a good

ventilation rate — the amount of new air moving into

the burn area — makes the fire grow in height with

more oxygen. Such conditions are often challenging

to achieve during burn seasons in the spring and fall

when inclement weather can prevent burns for weeks

in a row. Thus far this spring, the Land Bank has

burned on just four days, unfortunate for us grunts

eager for more burn hours.

When we are out on a burn, Perry quarterbacks the

fire, briefing us beforehand on burn locations, weath-

er conditions, escape routes, placement of tanker

trucks and water sources for tanker refills. He oper-

ates with two squad leaders, usually veteran wildland

firefighter and Land Bank employee Jeff Pollock and

Steinauer. Frequently, firefighters from the Cape Cod

National Seashore, Martha’s Vineyard and other con-

servation areas around the region come to Nantucket

to help the cause. While there are several dozen wild-

land firefighters Perry can call on, rarely more than 12

show up for burns.

Just before the burn begins, squad leaders assign

burn management duties to their charges, including

setting the brush on fire with a drip torch canister

filled with mixture of diesel and gasoline, shouldering

a water-filled backpack with hand-pump spray nozzle

for keeping the fire in check, driving one of the four

tanker/fire hose trucks, scratching down to bare earth

with a rake to improve the fire edge of a firebreak,

manning the water hose to create a wet line along the

edge of a break to keep the fire from slopping out of

the burn area, and scouting for escaping cinders that

could cause fires outside the burn area. Experienced

firefighters and us grunts are rotated through these

various tasks throughout the fire.

The essence of a controlled burn is in its carefully

planned prescription, and the doctor in this case is

plant ecologist Peter Dunwiddie, Steinauer’s prede-

cessor who began controlled burns on Nantucket in

the mid-1980s. Back then, burns were done in blue

jeans, tennis sneakers and with only brooms for con-

trol. Since then, Dunwiddie has published several

papers on the positive effects of prescribed fire on

rare plant communities. Also, along the way, brush

cutting was added not only to aid in invasive species

removal and re-establishment of grassland habitat,

but also in the creation of firebreaks.

So, to Peter Dunwiddie, and also Bruce Perry and

Ernie Steinauer, I say, thank you for opening my eyes

to the necessity of fire in island land management and

bringing me along as a wildland firefighter.
