More about the DragonsNational RankingsThe MSUM football team is 10th in the nation in first downs (256), 12th in total offense (498.3 yards per game) and 16th in rushing offense (239.3). Adam Jiskra is ranked 13th in the nation in receptions per game (7.1), 13th in receiving yards (1,013) and 15th in receiving yards per game (101.3). Hodge is ranked 30th in the nation in total offense (301). Sophomore Sheldon Jones is 32nd in passes defended at 1.4 per game.

All-Purpose WeaponJunior running back Zayne Medhaug has been responsible for the Dragons’ longest play on offense and on special teams this season. His 85-yard touchdown run against Bemidji was the Dragons’ longest play from scrimmage this year and is tied for the sixth-longest run in school history. His 98-yard kick return for a touchdown in the win over Wayne State is the longest special teams play in school history. Medhaug is looking to become the first Dragon to rush for 1,000 yards in a season since Tony Duerr accomplished the feat in 1999. Medhaug has 906 yards rushing yards this season.

NSIC RankingsMSUM is ranked first in the NSIC in total offense (498.3), second in first downs (256) and third in rushing offense (239.3). Jiskra is ranked first in receiving yards per game (101.3) and second in receptions per game (7.1). Medhaug is ranked third in all-purpose yards, tied for third in scoring (90) and fifth in rushing yards (906) while Hodge is ranked fourth in total offense (301.0 yards) and seventh in passing average (220.1).

The 300 ClubMSUM has rushed for more than 300 yards in three straight games, the first time that has happened in the Steve Laqua era. The 378 yards against Mary were the most MSUM has rushed for in a game in the Steve Laqua era. In the win over Minot State, the Dragons rushed for 360 yards on 60 carries and followed that with 57 carries for 312 yards in the win at Bemidji.

NSIC Players of the WeekSophomore punter/kicker Michael Schwichtenberg was named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 3 after a strong performance against Minot State. Schwichtenberg was a perfect 7-of-7 on extra points and also added a 29-yard field goal in the

win. A week later, redshirt freshman Abe Roehrich received NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording 12 tackles and a game-clinching interception in the end zone in the final minutes in the 27-21 win at Bemidji State.

Hodge Sets Career MarkJunior quarterback Jake Hodge is now MSUM’s career leader in passing yards. The Kasson, Minn., native threw for 253 yards and three scores in the win over Minot State on Nov. 4. Hodge surpassed the previous mark of 5,748 yards set by Dustin Long in the first half and now has 5,905 career passing yards.

Jiskra Sets Record, Chases AnotherJunior wide receiver Adam Jiskra now has his name at the top of the Dragon record books for career receiving yards. Jiskra, in his third season as a starting wide receiver, now has 2,644 yards receiving, surpassing the previous record of 2,349 by Jabari Taylor in the loss to St. Cloud State. Jiskra is now in second in career receptions with 178, just 36 behind Taylor, the all-time leader with 214.

Dragons Surpass 50MSUM surpassed the 50-point total for the first time in 15 years in the 52-7 win over Minot State on Nov. 1. The last time the Dragons accomplished that feat was 1999 in a 56-7 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Defense Delivers Against MinotThe young MSUM defense has endured some growing pains during the season but had a strong all-around day in the 52-7 win over Minot State on Nov. 1. The Dragons surrendered just seven points -- the fewest an MSUM defense has allowed in a game since 2009 when the Dragons beat Valley City State 16-6. MSUM also surrendered just 212 yards of total offense in the game to the Beavers, the fewest allowed in the Steve Laqua era.

Eclipsing 500The Dragon offense has surpassed the 500-yard mark in total offense five times this season, including piling up 613 yards in the win over Minot State on Nov. 1. MSUM has only been held under the 400-yard mark twice this season, and that was against the teams currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation, Minnesota State, Mankato and Minnesota Duluth, respectively. MSUM leads the NSIC in total offense per game at 498.3 yards.

Week 11 Under LaquaThe Dragons are 0-3 in Week 11 games under Laqua. The Dragons lost to St. Cloud State, 47-14 in 2011 and also fell to the Huskies, 39-37 in 2012 at Alex Nemzek Stadium. Last season MSUM fell to the Huskies 64-27 in St. Cloud. Stalwarts Up FrontSenior Kasey Groettum and juniors Bennen Bierman and Troy Peterson have each started all 32 games over the past two-plus seasons on the offensive line -- combining for 96 starts during that time. Their play is among the keys to the Dragon offense’s growth over the past two seasons. Groettum is in his fourth year as a starter after starting in five games as a freshman in 2011.

NSIC Division Standings - 2014

The Dragons retained the Axe for the first time in nearly 20 years with a 27-21 win over Bemidji State last Saturday in Bemidji, Minn.

MSUM will look to end the season on a three-game winning streak this week against Minnesota Crookston.

“We’re hoping to continue to build on the momentum we’ve established the last couple of weeks,” MSUM head coach Steve Laqua said. “We want to continue to run the ball effectively and play solid defense.”

The Dragons suffered a tough 20-14 loss at Minnesota Crookston in 2013, which ended a four-game winning streak against the Golden Eagles.

“It’s important for us to continue making progress in rebuilding our program,” Laqua said.

COACHING RESUME• Steve Laqua was named Head Coach in the spring of 2011, becoming the 17th Football Coach in the 93-year history of the program. The 2014 season is his seventh year as a head coach and the fourth at the collegiate level.• Laqua has coached 13 players to the All-NSIC team in three seasons: three to the first team, four to the second, and six to honorable mention.• Coached team that set nine school records in 2013. Team won most games since 2007 season and finished third in NSIC North Division.• Laqua spent four seasons as the Shanley Deacons head coach prior to joining MSUM.

COACHING BIOSteve Laqua is entering his fourth year as the head football coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2014. The Cavalier, N.D., native has taken on the challenge of helping restore Dragon football to its past glory.

Laqua is the 17th coach in Dragon history, being named to the post in the spring of 2011. He came to the Dragons after a turning around the Fargo Shanley High School program, as its head coach for four seasons.

The 2013 season saw the Dragons make significant progress. MSUM finished third in the eight-team NSIC North Division with a 4-3 mark after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll. MSUM finished the season strong, going 4-2 in its last six games.

The Dragons had seven All-NSIC players, including sophomore wide receiver Adam Jiskra, who was first-team all-conference. Jiskra was also named to the Don Hansen Super Region 3 Second Team.

MSUM’s offense set eight school records, including most total yards in a game (685) and most passing yards in a game. The team’s offense was ranked 35th in all of Division II in total yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Jake Hodge ranked fourth in the nation for points responsible for and seventh in total offense.

MSUM also beat Mary for the first time in school history to claim the “Paddle” for the first time, and the Dragons also regained the Battle Axe for the first time since 2008 with a 35-17 win over Bemidji State.

The Dragons fielded one of the youngest teams in the NSIC -- starting as many as 11 freshmen in a game -- in 2012 and finished with a 1-10 mark, although the team had close calls against St. Cloud State and Bemidji State in games taking down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Safety Shea DeJong was named the NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the Year, while senior defensive lineman Steve Parks was named first-team All-NSIC.

In his first season, Laqua led the Dragons to a 2-9 record including an opening-day victory and a thrilling overtime win on homecoming. Four players were named to the All-Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference team while making a national impact. Jeff Schuette, named to the All-NSIC Second Team, was eighth in the country in tackles followed closely by Tyler Brody, named to the All-NSIC Honorable Mention Team, who was 18th.

Prior to his reign at Shanley, the Deacons had two winless seasons, and under Laqua’s guidance became North Dakota State Football Champions during his third year (2009). The team won a tight battle over Devils Lake, 31-30. In 2010, he coached the Deacons to their second state title, as the team topped Devils Lake on a field goal as time expired, 24-21. Laqua was honored as the the 2009 and 2010 North Dakota High School AA Coach of the Year.

Prior to joining the prep-ranks, Laqua served as the Running Backs, Tight Ends and Punt Team Coach at North Dakota State from January 2005-March 2007, where he coached five All-Ameri-cans including Tyler Roehl and Mike Dragosavich. While at NDSU, Laqua was one of the team’s top recruiters, as he was heavily involved in recruiting players from North Dakota, South Dakota and western Minnesota.

For the 2004 season, Laqua was the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator, where he led an offense that led the NSIC in rushing yards, yards per attempt and least turnovers. During that season, he directly coached an NCAA DII All-American Frederic Rollins, who was also named a National Player of the Week during the season. The Golden Eagle offense set records for rushing yards in a season, as well as single game marks.

Laqua had a decorated career at North Dakota State as a Division II student-athlete, playing quarterback for the Bison. He was an Academic All-Conference member for three years as well as graduated with honors. He earned his Masters of Education from NDSU in 2007.
