What’s AheadThe Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team opens the 2014-15 season by hosting the Highway 75 Classic starting on Friday. The Dragons, who are co-hosting the event along with Minnesota Crookston, will begin the year against Wisconsin-Parkside at 6 p.m. on Friday and they conclude the event with a game against Northern Michigan at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Minnesota Crookston will also face NMU (8 p.m. on Friday) and UWP (7 p.m. on Saturday) at the event. All games will be played at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The Dragons will not face Minnesota Crookston at the event.

MSUM will meet Wisconsin-Parkside for a second time; the Dragons beat the Rangers, 71-68 at the Concordia-St. Paul tournament last year. MSUM will meet Northern Michigan for a second time; the Dragons won the other meeting, 66-55 in 2006 at the Concordia tournament.

MSU MoorheadThe Dragons – 16-11 a year ago – will have a different look after graduating three senior starters and three of their top four scorers. The leading returning scorer for the Dragons is junior guard Meghan Roehrich, who averaged 11.4 points per game last year. She led MSUM in three-point percentage (47.7), made three-pointers (51) and free-throw percentage (89.7 percent). Junior forward Savanna Handevidt (5.7 points per game) and sophomore guard Morgan Banasik (5.5 points per game) also return after starting all 27 games a year ago. Junior forward Heather Strese and sophomore guard Natalie VanWyhe also return after appearing in all 27 games last season. The Dragons will be bolstered by the healthy return of redshirt freshman forward Drew Sannes, who missed last season because of injury. Junior Jessica Hart, a transfer from South Dakota State, will also be counted on to contribute, as will fellow newcomers junior Cheyenne Ironheart and freshmen Mallie Doucette, Shannon Galegher, Mikayla Payne and Cassidy Thorson. Karla Nelson is in her 15th season as MSUM’s head coach with a record of 240-159 at the school.

About Wisconsin-ParksideThe Rangers were 8-18 last season under the direction of

Head Coach Jacob Yorg, who is entering his second season as the team’s head coach. UWP returns its top two scorers from a year ago in senior guard Gaby Bronson (14.3 points per game) and junior guard Tara Knapstein (12.5 points per game). The team also returns its third-leading scorer, senior Maddie Johnston (8.6), from 2013-14. MSUM met the Rangers last year at the Concordia-St. Paul tournament and won 71-68. UWP lost to Big Ten foe Northwestern, 78-47 in an exhibition game on Nov. 9. Tara Knapstein had 10 points for the Rangers. Earlier UWP beat Division I Valparaiso 69-52 on Nov. 1 in an exhibition. UWP was picked to finish fifth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s East Division in the preseason coaches poll. Yorg is in his second season at the UWP head coach with a record of 8-18 at the school.

About Northern MichiganThe Wildcats went 22-8 last season and 16-6 in winning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament title. Northern Michigan was picked to win the GLIAC North Division title in the league’s preseason coaches poll. Two NMU players earned preseason all-conference honors – senior guards Alyssa Colla and Lauren Gruber. Colla scored 16.4 points a game last season while Gruber averaged 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Junior forward Abbey DeBruin also returns after averaging 9.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, giving the Wildcats three returning players who started all 30 games a year ago. Northern Michigan lost to Division I foe Butler, 67-47 in an exhibition game on Nov. 2. Nea Makela led the way with 11 points. Troy Mattson is in his 10th season as the NMU head coach with a record of 124-142.

COACHING BIOThe 2014-15 season will be Karla Nelson’s 15th as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. During her 14 years as head coach, MSUM has been a model of consistent success.

Nelson has 14 straight winning seasons as MSUM’s mentor. The Dragons have qualified for the conference tournament for 15 consecutive years -- having never missed a conference tournament -- including in all 14 years of Nelson’s tenure. The fastest coach in MSU Moorhead basketball history to reach the 200-win plateau, Nelson has accumulated a record of 240-159 in 14 seasons.

Also included in the success are three trips to the NCAA Division II post-season play, two national statistical titles, conference and region Coach of the Year endorsements and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. Nelson is fourth among NSIC coaches in total wins at their respective schools.

Nelson has also coached 32 all-conference honorees in 14 seasons. She led Angie Jetvig to four All-American teams including two consecutive Daktronics All-American honors in 2011 and 2012. Nelson also helped Megan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach to second team Daktronics All-American honors in 2010.

In 2013-14, MSUM finished 16-11, highlighted by wins over regional qualifiers Wayne State (ranked No. 8 at the time) and Concordia-St. Paul. Zabel was named to the All-NSIC first team while senior forward Megan Strese was named to the All-NSIC second team. Both players surpassed 1,000 points for their careers during the season; Strese left MSUM ranked 11th all-time in scoring at 1,228 points while Zabel finished in 15th at 1,115 points. Senior guard Haley Thomforde also finished her career fifth in assists under Nelson’s tutelage.

The 2012-13 season saw a young Dragon team with just two seniors earn a 16-12 mark and a first-round win in the NSIC tournament. MSUM also earned a win over No. 17-ranked Augustana, which ended up qualifying for the NCAA Division II Final Four. Also in 2012-13, senior Marisa Yernatich set the new career three-point record at MSUM, while junior Megan Strese earned first-team All-NSIC honors. Zabel was an All-NSIC second-team selection.

The first coach at MSUM to debut with back-to-back winning campaigns, Nelson and the Dragons made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in 2004-05, returned in 2006-07, and qualified for a third time in 2008-09.

The 2006-07 team reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and made a serious run for the NSIC title, placing second in the league tournament and suffered an NCAA Tournament opening round loss to the University of North Dakota.

In 2008-09, the Dragons were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, after going on an 11-0 run to open the season. The season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after picking up the first post-season win in program history. Nelson prodded her first club to a 15-12 overall record in 2000-01, the first winning season at MSUM in six years that also included a NSIC playoff invitation. In 2004-05 Nelson and the Dragons claimed their first NSIC outright title, cracked the nation’s Top-25 for the first time and received a NCAA Division II regional tournament invitation, the first time in the Head Coach’s career. MSUM finished 24-7 overall and set a Dragon single season record victories. Nelson was saluted as the NSIC Coach of the Year and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 7 Coach of the Year as well. The WBCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honor was her second, the first coming during the 2002-03 season.

Nelson served six seasons as the Dragons’ No. 1 assistant from 1994-2000. When Jean Roise resigned in March of 2000, MSUMDirector of Athletics Dr. Katy Wilson quickly promoted Nelson to the top post..

A recreation major, Nelson completed an undergraduate degree from North Dakota and a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in Health Education. Nelson was a member of the coaching staff at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years before moving to MSUM.

COACHING RESUME• Karla Nelson was promoted to head coach in March of 2000, becoming the 12th Women’s Basketball Coach in the 46-year history of the program. • 2013-14 is her 21st year in coaching at MSUM and the 15th as a head coach.• The fastest coach in MSUM basketball history to reach 200 wins.• Nelson served as a coach at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years prior to arriving at MSUM.• Played four seasons of basketball at the University of North Dakota, twice being honored as UND’s Best Defensive Player.
