2014 FOOTBALL

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD DRAGONSLevi Freidt leads the Minot defense with 86 tackles, including nine for loss. Thomas Bryson leads with 5.5 sacks while Bryce Broome leads with two interceptions. On defense, Minot State surrenders 36.5 points per game and allows 172 yards per game rushing. Teams are throwing for 249.2 yards per game against the Beavers while compiling 421.2 yards of total offense.

More about the DragonsThe 300 ClubMSUM rushed for 378 yards in the loss at Mary. It was the first time MSUM had surpassed the 300-yard rushing barrier since the Dragons rushed for 347 yards against Waldorf in 2003. The 378 yards were the most MSUM has rushed for in a game in the Steve Laqua era.

Carr Hits the Ground RunningRedshirt freshman quarterback Demetrius Carr, making his second career start, rushed for a career-high 208 yards in the Dragons’ game at Mary on Saturday. He became the first Dragon to eclipse the 200-yard rushing mark since Grover Moore ran for 238 in a Dragon 37-27 victory over the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the Metrodome, on Nov. 14, 1998.

Hitting 500The Dragon offense has surpassed the 500-yard mark in total offense four times this season, including piling up 566 in the loss at Mary. MSUM has only been held under the 400-yard mark twice this season, and that was against the teams currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation, Minnesota State, Mankato and Minnesota Duluth, respectively.

Jiskra Sets Record, Chases AnotherJunior wide receiver Adam Jiskra now has his name at the top of the Dragon record books for career receiving yards. Jiskra, in his third season as a starting wide receiver, now has 2,501 yards, surpassing the previous record of 2,349 by Jabari Taylor in the loss to St. Cloud State. Jiskra is now in second in career receptions with 167, just 47 behind Taylor, the all-time leader with 214.

Hodge Nearing the TopHodge is now ranked second in Dragon school history with 5,590 career passing yards and trails career leader Dustin Long, who has 5,748 career yards.

Roehrich’s RiseRedshirt freshman Abe Roehrich is in his first year as a starter at safety for the Dragons and has made an immediate impact. He leads MSUM with 67 tackles and also has a sack, an interception, four pass breakups and two forced fumble. His 38 solo tackles also lead the Dragon defense, which does not have a senior in its starting lineup.

Tough RoadFew Division II teams have played as difficult a schedule as the Dragons have so far in 2014. The combined record of the Dragons’ seven foes is 47-17 (.734). The combined record of the five teams MSUM has lost to is 33-9, with three of the teams (Minnesota State, Minnesota Duluth and Sioux Falls) currently ranked in the AFCA Division II top 25. Minnesota State is now ranked No. 1, UMD is now No. 2 and Sioux Falls is No. 13 in the latest poll.

National RankingsThe MSUM football team is tied for seventh in the nation in first downs (205), 17th in total offense (489.0) yards per game), 31st in rushing offense (215.1), and 39th in passing offense (273.9). Jiskra is ranked 10th in the nation in receiving yards (870), 10th in receiving yards per game (108.8) and is tied for 13th in receptions per game at 7.5. Hodge is ranked 21st in the nation in total offense (314.6). Sophomore Sheldon Jones is 30th in passes defended at 1.4 per game.

Block PartyRedshirt freshman safety Abe Roehrich and freshman defensive lineman Jake Busse both blocked field goals during the Dragons’ 40-36 win over Wayne State on Sept 20. In a game decided by four points, keeping those six points off the scoreboard proved vital. Freshman Damon Gibson blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown in Saturday’s game at Mary.

Week 9 Under LaquaThe Dragons are 1-2 in Week 9 games under Laqua. In 2011, they lost to Mary, 52-13 and a year ago, lost to Minot State, 31-10 in a home game.

All-Purpose WeaponJunior running back Zayne Medhaug became the first player in the NSIC to return a kickoff for a touchdown in the Dragons’ 40-36 win over Wayne State. Medhaug returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score in the fourth quarter to put MSUM up 38-23 in what proved to be the game-winning score. Medhaug is second in kick return average (31.7), is fifth in the NSIC in all-purpose yardage at 130.0 yards per game and is ninth in rushing yards per game at 78.2,.It was MSUM’s first kick return for a touchdown since 2006 when Jabari Taylor accomplished the feat.

Hodge a Double ThreatHodge continues to be one of the top all-around threats in the NSIC. He ranks second in the league in total offense per game at 314.6 yards per game. Hodge also is ranked fifth in the NSIC in passing yards per game at 238.0,

No Place Like HomeNearly half of the Dragons’ 2014 roster is from Minnesota, as 43 players hail from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The next state is neighboring North Dakota with 18 players.

Stalwarts Up FrontSenior Kasey Groettum and juniors Bennen Bierman and Troy Peterson have each started all 30 games over the past two-plus seasons on the offensive line -- combining for 90 starts during that time. Their play is among the keys to the Dragon offense’s growth over the past two seasons. Groettum is in his fourth year as a starter after starting in five games as a freshman in 2011.

2014 CaptainsMSUM’s senior linebacker Lomumba Ismail and sophomore linebacker Aaron Bohl are the Dragons’ 2014 team captains.

NSIC Division Standings - 2014

The Dragons came back from a 44-17 third-quarter deficit to take a 45-44 lead at Mary but the Marauders scored late in the fourth to secure a 52-45 win over the Dragons last Saturday in Bismarck, N.D.

“We showed resiliency coming back,” MSUM head coach Steve Laqua said. “We can build off the second-half comeback we had.”

This week, MSUM turns its attention to Minot State, a team it edged 31-30 last season.

“We’ve got to defend against the pass better and get more of a pass rush,” Laqua said. “Offensively we have to build on one of our best rushing performances.”

Turnovers will be key in this week’s game.

“The turnover margin will be a big part of the game,” Laqua said. “They’re opportunistic. We need to take care of the ball and have our defense get some takeaways.”

COACHING RESUME• Steve Laqua was named Head Coach in the spring of 2011, becoming the 17th Football Coach in the 93-year history of the program. The 2014 season is his seventh year as a head coach and the fourth at the collegiate level.• Laqua has coached 13 players to the All-NSIC team in three seasons: three to the first team, four to the second, and six to honorable mention.• Coached team that set nine school records in 2013. Team won most games since 2007 season and finished third in NSIC North Division.• Laqua spent four seasons as the Shanley Deacons head coach prior to joining MSUM.

COACHING BIOSteve Laqua is entering his fourth year as the head football coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2014. The Cavalier, N.D., native has taken on the challenge of helping restore Dragon football to its past glory.

Laqua is the 17th coach in Dragon history, being named to the post in the spring of 2011. He came to the Dragons after a turning around the Fargo Shanley High School program, as its head coach for four seasons.

The 2013 season saw the Dragons make significant progress. MSUM finished third in the eight-team NSIC North Division with a 4-3 mark after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll. MSUM finished the season strong, going 4-2 in its last six games.

The Dragons had seven All-NSIC players, including sophomore wide receiver Adam Jiskra, who was first-team all-conference. Jiskra was also named to the Don Hansen Super Region 3 Second Team.

MSUM’s offense set eight school records, including most total yards in a game (685) and most passing yards in a game. The team’s offense was ranked 35th in all of Division II in total yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Jake Hodge ranked fourth in the nation for points responsible for and seventh in total offense.

MSUM also beat Mary for the first time in school history to claim the “Paddle” for the first time, and the Dragons also regained the Battle Axe for the first time since 2008 with a 35-17 win over Bemidji State.

The Dragons fielded one of the youngest teams in the NSIC -- starting as many as 11 freshmen in a game -- in 2012 and finished with a 1-10 mark, although the team had close calls against St. Cloud State and Bemidji State in games taking down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Safety Shea DeJong was named the NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the Year, while senior defensive lineman Steve Parks was named first-team All-NSIC.

In his first season, Laqua led the Dragons to a 2-9 record including an opening-day victory and a thrilling overtime win on homecoming. Four players were named to the All-Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference team while making a national impact. Jeff Schuette, named to the All-NSIC Second Team, was eighth in the country in tackles followed closely by Tyler Brody, named to the All-NSIC Honorable Mention Team, who was 18th.

Prior to his reign at Shanley, the Deacons had two winless seasons, and under Laqua’s guidance became North Dakota State Football Champions during his third year (2009). The team won a tight battle over Devils Lake, 31-30. In 2010, he coached the Deacons to their second state title, as the team topped Devils Lake on a field goal as time expired, 24-21. Laqua was honored as the the 2009 and 2010 North Dakota High School AA Coach of the Year.

Prior to joining the prep-ranks, Laqua served as the Running Backs, Tight Ends and Punt Team Coach at North Dakota State from January 2005-March 2007, where he coached five All-Ameri-cans including Tyler Roehl and Mike Dragosavich. While at NDSU, Laqua was one of the team’s top recruiters, as he was heavily involved in recruiting players from North Dakota, South Dakota and western Minnesota.

For the 2004 season, Laqua was the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator, where he led an offense that led the NSIC in rushing yards, yards per attempt and least turnovers. During that season, he directly coached an NCAA DII All-American Frederic Rollins, who was also named a National Player of the Week during the season. The Golden Eagle offense set records for rushing yards in a season, as well as single game marks.

Laqua had a decorated career at North Dakota State as a Division II student-athlete, playing quarterback for the Bison. He was an Academic All-Conference member for three years as well as graduated with honors. He earned his Masters of Education from NDSU in 2007.

Laqua and his wife, Patty, have six children.
