Most Holy Trinity Sunday
2 ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH
THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
Dear Parishioners:
I am so pleased that state and local officials are relaxing the restrictions upon our daily lives. While we must continue to be vigilant in regard to the lingering coronavirus, it is a very good thing that our lives are returning
to normal. I am happy that we can once again celebrate Holy Mass in our beautiful church and I look forward to that day when we can do so freed of current restrictions.
Through this letter I want you to be aware of a decision that I have made after consultation with our parish staff, our lay leadership, and my brother priests in the South Deanery. When we resume our normal Mass schedule, we will no longer offer a 5:00 pm Sunday Mass at St. Barnabas. Instead, the priests of St Barnabas, Our Lady of the Greenwood, and Saints Francis and Clare will take turns offering a shared Sunday evening Mass at Our Lady of the Greenwood at 5:00 pm. This decision is made for the following reasons:
1. The shared Mass will help ease the sacramental load on the priests in the South Deanery. There is a decline in the number of priests available to serve the sacramental needs of parishes in our archdiocese. St Barnabas once had two full-time priests to offer five weekend Masses. Now the two full-time priests at St Barnabas offer every weekend five English Masses and one Mass in Hakha Chin. Furthermore, Fr Eustace is being called upon to offer Mass in Burmese at St Mark several Sundays each month. I am sometimes asked to take an extra Mass on the weekend to fill in for a priest who is ill. In our archdiocese we have no ordinations to the priesthood this year and no ordinations next year. Several priests will be retiring in the next two years and many other priests are serving full-time beyond the age of retirement. The shared Sunday evening Mass helps our priests to be flexible to help out when needed in other parishes during this time of severe decline in the number of archdiocesan priests.
2. We presently offer more weekend Masses than necessary. Our parish church seats 750 people. Before the shut-down, the average weekend attendance at our six Masses combined was approximately 1500. Our parish is not atypical in this regard. Most parishes in the metropolitan area have at weekend Masses many more seats that are empty than are filled. It is good that we can offer a variety of Mass times on Sunday to suit the needs of parishioners. Offering a shared Sunday evening Mass will serve the needs of St Barnabas parishioners who are not able to get to Mass at any other time.
3. On a personal note, I must tell you that by the time 5:00 pm Sunday rolls around I have very little left to give. Several times this past year during the 5:00 pm Sunday Mass I felt as though I was “running on fumes” to use a racing term. This is not good for my health. I am willing to give all that I have when it is necessary to do so. Having a 5:00 pm Sunday Mass at St Barnabas is not necessary when there is a shared Sunday evening Mass at 5:00 pm at Our Lady of the Greenwood.
Please know that your collection envelope placed in the basket at Our Lady of the Greenwood will be returned in full to St Barnabas. There will also be extra envelopes on hand that you may designate to St Barnabas. Our weekly bulletin will be on hand in the narthex at Our Lady of the Greenwood for the shared Mass.
I know that some will be disappointed with this decision. After this extended time without public Masses may we focus our attention on the great blessing to have access to the Lord’s Day Mass at St Barnabas at 5:00pm Saturday, and at 7:00, 9:00, and 11:00 am on Sunday morning, plus the opportunity to participate in the shared Sunday evening Mass at 5:00 pm at Our Lady of the Greenwood. The shared Mass will begin when we are back in full swing, hopefully in the next month or two.
God bless,
Fr Mahan
Our outdoor Masses are offered simply but reverently. Thanks to Joe Sheehan and Ryan Endris who set up our portable altar so we may worship the Lord through the Holy Mass. You may attend Mass sitting in your vehicle or by bringing a lawn chair or a blanket.

Can You Help St. Vincent de Paul? The St. Vincent de Paul Society hopes you and your family and friends are well and safe. We hope you have everything you need to carry you through this difficult time … shelter, food, clothing, and household essentials. Many of our neighbors do not. Can you help us help them?
We are in dire need of volunteers at our Food Pantry as well as facemasks. We also need donations of gently used clothing, linens, kitchen and household goods. With the closing of our two Mission 27 Resale stores, we also need your financial support. Our drive-through food pantry is helping almost 1,000 families each day and increasing rapidly.
Many of us will be receiving a check for $1,200 from the economic stimulus package recently passed by the Senate. Some of us may not need this money. Some of us may want to give back to the families we serve. Can you help?
Please take a moment to go to our website www.svdpindy.org for more information on how you can help us help others. Please pray for St. Vincent de Paul and the people we serve. We’ll be praying for you, too.

Where is that guy with the rainbow wig holding a “John 3:16” sign in the end zone at NFL football games? Younger readers may not have any idea what I am talking about! You used to see this guy on TV all the time wearing “Jesus Saves” shirts and holding his sign. Most thought he was a harmless guy, but now he is serving multiple life sen-tences for taking hostages at a hotel near LAX in 1992. His name is Rollen Stewart and he believed — and continues to believe while in prison — that Jesus’ second coming is imminent. His extreme actions were meant to make people take notice and listen to him. Now he sits behind bars, and most in the world see his name as nothing more than an answer to a trivia question.
It is a sad story when people hurt others or use extreme methods in the name of God. Mr. Stewart’s belief that simply getting people to listen to his message is the most important step in their salvation is misguided. His poor stewardship should stand in stark contrast to our good stewardship. Our actions, seasoned at times with our words, should be the evidence people need to see the transformative power of Jesus Christ. We do believe that he is indeed coming again. But once you have committed yourself to him and live in his life on earth, when he returns is not our main concern. We are ready whenever that time comes, and hopefully, we can help others be ready as well by our example.

Outreach MinistrySherry Meyer is a lay missionary from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis who has been working in Arua Diocese of northern Uganda for over 28 years. She grew up on the southside of Indianapolis, taught at Roncalli and was principal at St. Roch For the past 18 years she has worked to established a Catholic radio station for the diocese which has now been broadcasting 15 years in English as well as several tribal languages on three (soon to be four) frequencies.
St. Barnabas parish has supported Sherry for many years through the Outreach Ministry. Each time you share your treasure with the parish, the parish shares a small part of that with ministries such as Sherry’s in Uganda. Sherry is working to develop a new site for the 4th radio location. This new site does not have a water connection and she has asked us to assist in getting them hooked up with water.
Because of your generosity to the parish we are able to grant this request. Through the radio station they are able to share the Good News of the Gospel with another area of Uganda. THANK YOU for your commitment to stewardship.
The Outreach Ministry team meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. New members are always welcome. Contact Connie Merkel at [email protected] for more information.
To learn more about Sherry and her ministry find her on facebook at Sherry Meyer.
