Parish Food Pantry – Summer Closure

Our Food Pantry has closed for the summer. We will continue to collect food during the summer months and we always welcome new volunteers. If you are interested in working in the Pantry once a month please call the church office. It is easy work and also very rewarding!

UPDATE! Homeschoolers: Regina Caeli Academy

A parent information meeting will be held Thursday, June 11, at 6:30pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. For more information and to R.S.V.P., please contact Lisa Bandura at [email protected] or 205-902-1660. Regina Caeli Academy is a resource center in which students attend university style classes taught using the Socratic method two days per week and are homeschooled the remaining days. Affordable work tuition rates are available for families who work as assistants and tutors on site. Paid tutor positions are available as well as childcare for staff members with children aged 3 years and under. Our program is currently accepting applications for PreK3-12 grades at http://www.rcahybrid.org. For additional information, you may also contact Nikki Hand at 470-239-0259.

NEW! Feast of St. Barnabas

This Thursday, June 11, is our parish feast day, which has the rank of a “Local Solemnity” (i.e., a solemnity only in our parish). No special celebration is planned this year but we will consider how we can celebrate our patron with appropriate festivity in the future. We give thanks to Saint Barnabas, the “son of encouragement” (Acts 4:36), for encouraging us with his prayers and heavenly help! Mass that day will be at the usual 8:30am, but will include the Gloria and Creed, as is required for Solemnities. Come to this Mass, if possible, and join us in giving thanks for our parish patron! Saint Barnabas, pray for us!

NEW! Welcome, Josh!

We welcome seminarian Josh Altonji to the parish this weekend. Josh attends the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio and has just completed his second year of theology studies (so, God-willing, he has two years to go). He will be with us until the end of July to serve the parish communities of St. Barnabas and Holy Rosary, as well as the Hispanic community at Our Lady of Lourdes. Please give him a warm welcome and let him know of your support for his vocational discernment.

NEW! Mass in Honor of St. Josemaria Escrivá

All are invited to a Mass in honor of St. Josemaria Escrivá, the Founder of Opus Dei at the Cathedral of St. Paul on Saturday, June 27 at 11:00am, followed by a reception in the Cathedral Life Center. Learn more about this “Saint of Ordinary Life”, canonized by Pope St. John Paul II, at http://josemariaescriva.info.

STATUS Scholarship Match – 24% Participation

We are still at a very low level of participation in this important fundraiser – less than one quarter of parishioners have donated. But we still have time: we have until June 20 to reach the $15,000 goal that our benefactor will match.

The total raised to date: $8,580. Thirty-one parishioners/families (out of approx. 130) have given $3,575 of the total amount.

If you have not yet given please do so as soon as possible. No amount is too small or large. Please make your check payable to the “Msgr. O’Connor Scholarship Fund” and leave it in the collection, drop it at the office, or mail it in. For registered parishioners, the amount is recorded on your donor statement, which you will receive at the beginning of January. For non-registered individuals or donors from outside the parish, a thank you letter is sent so that you have a tax record. To all: Thank you!

UPDATE! Work on Church Bathroom

A reminder for those who may be wondering: the work on the installation of a new bathroom, to be located in the church vestibule, is slated to begin around the third week of June. It will take approximately two weeks to complete. There should be no interruptions to our worship in the church during that time. Again, many thanks to all of the donors for their support of this improvement project for our church!

NEW! Tree Removal Update

The removal of the trees will happen sometime around mid-June. In the meantime, Father Jerabek plans to discuss with the Parish Pastoral Council various ideas on how to provide a bit of shade on our patio, in the absence of pecan tree which is to be removed. Perhaps it will be possible to install some sort of awning; we will discuss various possibilities.

NEW! Parish Pastoral Council Meeting

The Parish Pastoral Council will meet this Monday, June 8. The group is to discuss the status of our various maintenance and improvement projects, including our tree removal and a first look at eventually having the parking lot resurfaced. If you have any matters that you would like the Pastoral Council to address, please don’t hesitate to contact one of the members. The group exists to assist the pastor his mission to serve all in the parish. Group members:

Debra Burse (secretary) James Jacobson Anne Lorino David Renda Jerry Romano Beverly Sullivan

Or, please never hesitate to speak with Father Jerabek directly.
