TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

T he Holy Father usually marks the solemn opening of the Lenten fast with a procession and Mass on Ash Wednesday even‐

ing. He walks from the Benedic ne monastery, San Anselmo, down the Aven ne hill to the Dominican monastery of Santa

Sabina. This very old tradi on was revived by Pope John XXIII in the late 1950s. Have you ever wondered who gives the

pope his ashes? It’s the cardinal who has been given the “ tle” of the church of Santa Sabina. The pope’s homily at this Mass states his

theme for Lent.

Santa Sabina dates from the fi h century, and is one of the most beau ful churches in Rome. One of the panels on its main doors

features the Crucifixion, a scene not normally depicted in art un l much later. In the year 1219 the pope gave the church to Saint Dom‐

inic for his new religious order, the “Order of Preachers,” commonly called the Dominicans, and it remains their world headquarters to

this day. That pope, Honorius III, was a member of the Savelli family, and this church was their personal family chapel. Sabina was a

wealthy Roman lady who became a Chris an and was martyred, and whose home became a place of prayer. Later, the church built on

that spot was dedicated to her memory. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Bookstore & Gi Shop Schedule The store, located on the C Hall, will be open a er all English Masses the weekend of February 24/25.

This Week’s Schedule Masses and Communion will be as normally scheduled. Father Pagel will celebrate the Thursday and Friday (and next Monday) morning Masses.

As we look at our lives and the many ways God has blessed us, let us give back a propor onate gi to the Diocesan Support Appeal as a way of saying thank you to the Lord. God will never be outdone in generosity. If you did not turn in your completed pledge envelope during today’s Mass, you may com‐

plete a pledge envelope and return it to the Parish Office or go to www.charlo ediocese.org/dsa to make a gi online.

Greeter Training ‐ Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 7 pm The first faces our parishioners and visitors see when they come to church are those of the Greeters. Even if they are long‐ me pa‐rishioners with their favorite pews long ago established, a friendly smile, an open door and a warm welcome make them feel at home and part of our church community. If they are visitors they may be hesitant or nervous about coming in if they don’t know the layout of the church.

The Greeter's Ministry is mul ‐faceted. Greeters provide service to all who visit our parish. They greet you with a smile and are prepared to offer assistance in finding sea ng, direc ng you to where you need to go, and responding in case of an emergency. Greeters assist the congrega on during liturgies by preparing and presen ng the offertory. They make sure non‐ambulatory parish‐ioners receive Communion, and they hand out bulle ns and an‐other smile a er Mass. We are very grateful for our current group of Greeters who help perform all these necessary func ons.

We need more of these special people, and we are asking you to consider if this is a ministry that might suit your talents. There will be Greeter training on Wednesday, March 7 at 7 pm a er Mass. Sign‐ups will be taken the weekends of Feb. 24/25 and Mar. 3/4. There will be someone at the sign‐up tables a er Masses on those days to explain further and to answer ques‐

ons. Please stop by and talk to us!

St. Barnabas offers condolences to… the family and loved ones of Mary Smith, who died on February 10, 2018. Mary was the wife of of the late William (Bill) Richard Smith, who passed away in 2015. They were long me members of St. Barnabas Church, and both were ac ve in our parish as Ador‐ers, and mailing helpers. Bill was a Homebound Minister and an Extraordinary Minister. They had moved to Swannanoa to be clos‐er to family, but kept es with our church. Mary’s funeral was this past Tuesday at St. Barnabas. You can read her obituary here: h ps://saintbarnabasarden.org/m‐smith‐obit.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

You say you are not happy in the Mission. That, in itself, is not a sign that God does not want you there. Perfect contentment is never to be found, in whatever place and condition one may be. This life is full of annoyances and troubles both of mind and of body; it is a state of continual agitation, which snatches peace of mind from those who think they possess it and eludes those who seek it. Did Our Lord lead an easy life?

Parish Mission

at St. Barnabas Catholic Church Sunday, March 11 ‐ Wednesday, March 14 Evening programs beginning at 7 pm Sunday through Wednesday

Dear Parishioner, Please accept this invitation to attend our upcoming parish mission, "Finding God Wherever You Are", March 11-14, 2018. A parish mission is an opportunity for us all to renew our Catholic faith. The mission services consists of a proclamation of the Word of God, preaching and reflection, singing and praying together. It will be a grace-filled hap-pening, an opportunity to experience in a special way the wonderful presence and love of God. If you have abandoned the faith of your youth, the mission is for you. If you have been on again, off again in the living of your Catholic religion, the mission is for you. If you have wondered what is going on in the Church today, the mission is for you. If you have been a faithful witness of your Catholic faith, the mission is for you. If you feel you need to know more about how to pray, the mission is for you. If you judge yourself to be in need of spiritual growth, the mission is for you. If you are a sinner or a saint, or somewhere in between, the mission is for you. The mission is for everyone, but especially for you and your family. To make it easier for entire families to attend, there will be childcare available each evening. More information will follow as to how to sign-up in the next few weeks. Our "Finding God Wherever You Are" mission will begin on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 7 PM. In Church. Mission services are also planned for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. Each service should last about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes or so, and will be followed by a time for fellowship and refreshments. Please join me in praying for the success of our parish mission and plan now to share with me this very special, grace-filled time. Sincerely,

Fr. Adrian Porras
