TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

O ne of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the A c, or as the locals say, “Ons Lieve Heer op Solder.” What looks like a beau ful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well‐preserved seventeenth‐century home and a secret church. During the Reforma on, the Netherlands was divided into

Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and “de‐Catholicized” them. New laws forbade the celebra on of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed “Old Church” by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work “hiding” St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is s ll celebrated here. It’s a beau ful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch pain ng. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emp ed of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is s ll painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tol‐erated in Holland a er 1853, but in 1924 when the Interna onal Eucharis c Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were s ll forbidden in the streets. Ride Needed to 11 am Mass During February A woman who lives in Brookdale Asheville Overlook at 308 Over‐look Road is needing a ride to the 11 am Mass during the month of February. She has a regular ride normally, but the people who bring her are out of town for the month of February. The woman has a walker but is ambulatory. Can someone please help her out? It's just for the month of February. She has called the church a few

Cooking for Father Adrian We have an opening for someone to prepare dinner for Father on the fi h Saturday of the month, when there is one. The dinners are brought to the church and stored in the refrigerator in the kitchen so he can pick them up that day. This is a ministry that helps our Pastor manage the many demands for his me in minis‐tering to our parish. Father/Daughter Dance Planning Mee ng Tuesday, January 23 The annual Father/Daughter Dance will be held on Friday, Febru‐ary 9, 2018 here at St. Barnabas. THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

T oday we encounter readings that already

have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh

undergoes a forty‐day fast, the psalmist

reminds us that God alone can show sinners the

way, Paul shows us how flee ng the things and

events of this world are, and Jesus cries out

“Repent!” before he calls his new followers. “Come

a er me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out

the commands and demands of our discipleship

through bap sm, we must first know our need for

conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in

the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the

stark reminder of what befell John the Bap st for

completely living out his voca on as the herald of

Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned,

and martyred. Though few of us will experience

consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to

risk some sort of rejec on as, heeding the call of

Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, re‐

pent of our sins, and believe in the good news of

Anniversary of Roe v. Wade January 22nd marks the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, when our Supreme Court held that women have a Cons tu onal right to privacy, and that includes abor on.

The word "abor on" is not found anywhere in the Cons tu on. Interes ngly, the word "privacy" is also totally absent. Yet, the Court said that a Cons tu onal right to privacy is found "emana ng from a penumbra" of the liberty clause of the Cons ‐tu on.

This is pure nonsense and these verbal gymnas cs are a perfect example of "judicial ac vism" which simply means that the Su‐preme Court started with the poli cal conclusion they wanted and blatantly twisted the Cons tu on to make it fit. In short, the majority of judges who decided the case had a poli cal agenda and manipulated our Cons tu on, in the same way some people manipulate Scripture to jus fy what they want to do.

Notwithstanding the lack of legal jus fica on for the decision in Roe v. Wade one has to ask oneself why should any right to pri‐vacy allow an expectant mother to kill her baby. Indeed, all rights under the Cons tu on have limits and there are many things which occur in private that the law does not allow. Before society can say that someone's right to par cipate in a certain ac vity is derived from his or her right to privacy, it must first answer the ques on ‐ “The privacy to do what?"

In the case of abor on, the ques on is not whether a woman has a right to privacy, but whether her right to privacy supersedes her child's right to life. To say that it does is to contend that eve‐ry right expressed in the Cons tu on has limits, except the one which is not expressed, but had to be found "emana ng from a penumbra". Of course, the only legi mate view is that when one individual's "choice" will cost another human being his or her life, that "choice" cannot be considered a ma er of privacy. ‐ h p://pro‐lifear cles.org

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Thanks to the generosity of the Walnut Cove Mem‐bers Associa on, the St Vincent de Paul Society of St Barnabas Church has received a $6,000 grant to start a diaper bank in conjunc on with our food pantry. The diaper bank is aimed at helping provide an ade‐quate supply of diapers to needy families with small children. Diapers are an issue for many low income families because they are expensive and required in large numbers. Further, the need is magnified because diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps and there are no other federal, state or local safety‐net programs alloca ng funds for the purchase of diapers. Western North Carolina does not have a major diaper bank and diapers are only available in limited quan‐

es through local food pantries and churches. Lack of disposable dia‐pers is a significant issue to low income families and can lead to baby health issues, limits the ability of the mother to return to work and cre‐ates parental stress. With this grant, the Saint Vincent De Paul Society will have the resources to augment the limited local supply and support the diaper needs of at least 10 needy children in our local community for an en re year. Asheville Catholic School presents the 12th Annual Shamrock Run on Saturday, March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day. This year’s race will benefit the O’Brien and William Edward Gibbs Memorial Scholarship Fund. There are two races: a 5K and a 10K, both of which start and finish at ACS and run through the beau ful neighborhoods of North Asheville. A fun run will precede the start of the 5K and 10K. The 10K will start at 9:00 AM and the 5K at 9:15 AM. The Fun Run will begin at 8:30 AM. The event will be on St. Patrick’s Day this year – Saturday, March 17 – giving everyone a perfect way to celebrate this fun holiday. Asheville Catholic School Shamrock Run Benefi ng the O’Brien and William Edward Gibbs’ Memorial Scholarship Fund

Leaving a legacy. The annual Asheville Catholic School Shamrock 5K/10k/Fun Run always marks a special day on our calendar as we welcome runners from across the area to our campus and raise money for important pro‐grams. This year, the event has a new legacy. At Asheville Catholic School we look at our work as a way for us to leave a legacy for the future by preparing our students to grow to become ci zens of our world who are change makers that make the world a be er place. That’s the legacy we want them to leave. This year’s Shamrock Run is an opportunity for us to expand the legacy that William Edward, and O’Brien Gibbs have le a er their recent passing. William Ed‐ward and O’Brien loved freely, and accepted others without condi on. One of our goals at Asheville Cath‐olic School is to accept any student who has a desire for a strong, faith based educa on. An important way we do this is through scholarships and tui on assistance. Our efforts in these areas, however, need fund‐ing. The 2018 Shamrock Run will help us provide a loving and accep ng environment to more students, just as William Edward and O’Brien would have wanted. All funds raised from this year’s race will go towards the William Edward and O’Brien Gibbs Memorial Scholar‐ship Fund. This fund is being established to carry on the example that these boys set for all of us. That is, to love and accept others. It is our sincere hope that this race con nues to bring joy to the lives of the par ci‐pants, and the students at Asheville Catholic School as they benefit from your par cipa on and generosity.

From January 28‐February 3, Asheville Catholic School will join Catholic Schools across the na on to celebrate the prosperity of Catholic Schools and the benefits of Catholic Educa on on our na on during Catholic Schools Week. The na onal theme is “Catholic Schools: Communi es of Faith, Knowledge and Service”, a mantra that corresponds with ACS’s guiding philosophy known as “7 x 7” which integrates Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effec ve People and the 7 Virtues of our Catholic Faith. This week gives us a chance to honor our students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff for their dedica‐

on to Catholic educa on. ACS serves grades Pre‐K through 8th in an educa onal se ng that is in mate, rigorous,

and relevant to people of all faiths. Students are engaged in the classroom and in the community with organiza ons such as Manna Food Bank, Catholic Chari es, Brother Wolf, and many others. Students have the opportunity to par cipate in extracurricular ac vi es including musical dra‐ma, compe ve athle cs, Ba le of the Books, Math Counts, the Geography Bee and much more. On‐site, a er school care is available for those who need it.

2017 DSA Recap, and Going Forward... The final DSA report for 2017 is shown above. As you can see, we did not meet our assessment, and we were significantly under the average of the rest of the diocese. We got fairly close, but wouldn’t it be great to meet the goal, and even exceed the goal? Are you wondering why we should try to exceed it?

The amount of each parish’s DSA assessment is a percentage of their annu‐al Offertory. It is no a large percentage, 3 or 3.5 percent. Here is the reason we should strive to exceed our assessment. Any overage comes back to the parish! To spend as we see fit! Many parishes PLAN on an overage, and even iden fy what they will use those funds for when they come back to them. And the money that comes back is not considered in the offertory total when the percentages are set for the next year’s DSA!

It’s a win‐win to exceed the goal. And we are going to get that chance very soon. The 2018 DSA kicks off next month. Let’s exceed the goal, and in the process help our Diocese do its great work!
