Mike Mountain Horse Elementary School
November is always an exciting time with the opportunity for
teachers and parents to celebrate student learning through the
interview process. Parent Teacher Interviews will take place at
MMH in November. Kindergarten interviews are scheduled for
November 23 and 24. Grade 1 to 5 interviews are scheduled for
November 24 and 25. We will be
scheduling our interviews differently this
year and instructions on how to book
your interview is contained in this
newsletter. One very important item,
once you have scheduled your appointment do not close out
without physically writing down your interview time(s). A gentle
reminder that the school office is not staffed sufficiently to answer
phone calls regarding an interview time that is forgotten.
If your child is absent, please do not call the school but
instead follow these instructions. On April 4 2016 MMH
began using an automated attendance system. Safe
Arrival will call you if you have not called the 1-800
number before 8:20 in the morning. Please ensure that
you listen to the entire message and respond accordingly.
The school receives a report from Safe Arrival and
indicates reasons why the student is away or if a parent
has just hung up during the phone call. If you are not
familiar with the Safe Arrival procedures, please go to our
website and click on ‘Parents’. Following that, click on
“Reporting a Student’s Absence”, and you will have the
complete instructions and options.
Please make every effort to have your child
arrive on time. Grade 1 to 5 students are
expected to be at school at 8:15 in the morning
so that when the bell rings, students are at
their desks ready for the day. Issuing late
slips is very time consuming, not to mention precious time
lost in the classroom. Our thanks to all!
The Home Alone program is designed to provide children
10 years of age and older with the necessary skills and
knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone
for short periods of time. Registration forms are
available on our website or at the school office. The
programs runs November 28 and 29 from 3:15 to 4:15
pm.
Each student at MMH should enter the school
through his/her classroom assigned door. With
winter approaching, this will put them at their
own boot rack area and keep our school tidy. If
a parent or student must occasionally enter through the
front doors of the school, you are asked to remove wet or
soiled footwear before going any further. Thank you for
your understanding.
MMH clothing is a hit! We are
offering the chance to
purchase items once again!
You can purchase T-shirts, ball
caps, toques, headbands and
water bottles. All of these
items will have our MMH logo
on them. Details are on School
Cash Online. Cash or cheques
will not be accepted. Deadline
is a quick turnaround so get
your orders in right away!
Student Medical Concerns If your child has a medical condition of any kind, please contact the office
with the specific information. There are District policy forms that need
completion along with parent and physician signatures. In addition to
policy forms, medical concerns must be declared by the parent/guardian
on student registration forms each and every year.
Outside Recess
Just a reminder that students are expected
to go outside for every recess
unless it is extremely cold. Please
make sure your child comes
prepared for all types of weather
each and every school day. End of Day Plans
The office is currently being over-run with phone
calls throughout the day regarding after school
plans for children. We often cannot answer the
phone due to the volume of calls which leaves
parents phoning many times and making the issue
worse.
We ask that you have arrangements made prior to
each school day so that you do not have to call the
school to leave a message for your child. (a great
solution is to use the student agenda).
We do understand that emergencies arise and we
will continue to do our best with each situation but
appreciate your cooperation with this issue.
Hot Lunch Deadline Hot lunch deadline for orders in November is Friday
the 4th.

Teachers, Parents and Caregivers of MMH Students Our Mike Mountain Horse Society has finally been given the opportunity to participate in a casino fundraising event! This exciting news has come to us after years of waiting for our dates, followed by a great deal of paper work. The MMH Casino will be held on February 10 and 11 2017 and volunteers are needed to make this event possible. Volunteer shifts would be for either day and include day shifts (12:00 to 8:00 pm) or night shifts (8:00 pm until 4:00 am). The various jobs for volunteers include: cashier, money counter, chip runner, etc. Meals and snacks will be provided for all volunteers. This is a very exciting opportunity for MMH because your children benefit. We have the potential to make up to $35,000 for our school. Previously, money that has come to the school through fundraising has been spent on such things as recess activity bags, iPads for classrooms, books for classrooms and our playground, just to name a few. If you can help, please stop by the office as soon as possible to fill out a volunteer form. Time is of the essence as we need to give our volunteer list to the casino as soon as possible. If you need further information, please email Jody McRae at [email protected] If we don’t have enough volunteers the casino will take our nights away! We need your help!! Sincerely, The Friends of MMH Society

Pack a Healthier Lunch with Less Litter
On average a child or youth taking a lunch to school will throw away packaging that can create 30 kilograms/67 pounds of litter in a school year. It’s clear that lunches with less packaging will help reduce this litter, but they are also a chance to pack healthier foods. Some pre-packaged foods can have more sugar, salt, and fat than foods you choose and package yourself. Also, these ready-to-go options may not have a lot of fibre, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
Here’s one idea to reduce litter and pack a healthier lunch.
• Instead of buying a small pre-packaged lunch with meat and cheese, a fruit drink or pop, and a candy bar, try this tip:
• In reusable containers pack:
o whole grain crackers, lean meat, and lower milk fat cheese o water in a reusable water bottle o a piece of fruit or cut vegatables
These simple changes may provide more fibre from choosing whole grain crackers, bread or wraps and fruit or vegetables. The changes may also help you to use less fat by choosing lean meats, lower milk fat cheese, and less sugar by sending water instead of a sugar sweetened drinks, and it is all done without throw away packaging!

Making Time for Play
School is a great new adventure for most children and a place where they learn, play and interact with other children. Play is child-led, unstructured, spontaneous, and flexible with no purpose or goal. It builds healthy bodies and minds and is important for your child’s healthy development. During play, children are exposed to life skills such as communication, problem solving, cooperation, boundaries, perseverance and sharing. Your child’s day is structured to fit around school, with lots of rules to follow. Sometimes parents worry that their child isn’t doing enough structured activities after school. In fact, play where children decide for themselves what they want to do and how to do it is really valuable because it gives children time to:
• let their thoughts and imaginations roam
• explore ideas and think creatively
• develop social, language and communication skills
• develop physical skills
School-age children still learn through play. Plenty of play helps balance the structure of school lessons and also gives kids a chance to unwind after the routines and rules of school. When it comes to play and your school-age child, keep the focus on fun, rather than on learning. Let your child take the lead with play. Learning follows naturally when play is fun.
