Spring 2020 – NY Internship Info Packet

2

Who can participate? All communications majors are welcome to apply for internships in New York. Applicants must be on- track to complete the pre-requisites for COMMS 496R prior to departure for NY. Pre-requisites are as follows:

Advertising (Management) Advertising (Creative)COMMS 309 COMMS 309COMMS 337 COMMS 330COMMS 372 COMMS 331

News Media Public RelationsCOMMS 308 COMMS 318

and one of the following COMMS 320 COMMS 321 or 325 COMMS 336

Students must receive a C- or better in all pre-requisite classes in order to apply for Comms 496R internship credit. To be competitive for an internship it is suggested you have at least three other internships (academic credit or not) under your belt.

Why participate in a New York internship? For more than 35 years, Communications students have been interning in New York where some of the largest firms and agencies in professional fields can be located. Communications students from the Advertising, Public Relations, and Print-Broadcast Journalism/News Media emphases who are accepted into the major and have met all the prerequisites for Comms 496R can reach out to agencies or network with alumni to apply for internships. Once obtained, an internship in New York will enable a student to apply their classroom learning to agency and company scenarios allowing them to raise their skills to a whole new level.

Various students enjoy interning in New York during spring and summer terms. They are welcome to coordinate their housing by contacting the International House near Columbia University, 92Y on the Upper East-Side, or connecting with local wards or acquaintances to find housing during their time in New York. Internships with various employers such as major public relations and advertising agencies, design studios and other communication and entertainment firms or agencies allow students to learn first-hand what is happening in their chosen field, and to gain valuable experience for their resumes as preparation for entering the job market. Many of the employers like to hire from their intern pool, and in the past, several students have accepted full-time positions from their internship providers upon successful completion of their internships.

Past internship providers have been:

Advertising Young & Rubicam McCann Erickson Flint & Steel Sprinklr Barbarian Group

Journalism New York Daily News CBS NewsFox News New York 1Newsweek/Daily Beast NY Parent Magazine Brooklyn Paper Ladies’ Home Journal Men’s JournalTime Warner Cable

Is financial aid available?YES! To help with the cost of interning in New York, there are various financial resources for students. We encourage students to apply for any and all merit-based or need-based scholarships they qualify for. Before applying for need-based resources, please remember the words of President Spencer W. Kimball: “The responsibility for each person’s social, emotional, spiritual, physical or economic well being‐ rests first upon himself, second upon his family, and third upon the Church if he is a faithful member thereof. No true Latter‐day Saint, while physically or emotionally able, will voluntarily shift the burden of his own family’s well-being to someone else.” – October 1977 General Conference

This is only a sampling of the resources available to students. It is the student’s responsibility to contact respective financial aid providers for the most up-to-date information and deadlines. They will also be able to verify what charges the aid can be applied to.

Where will I live? All Communications interns are free to pick their own housing. Our NY Experience students will be staying at 92-Y (1395 Lexington Avenue New York, NY 10128) for part of the time that Communications interns will be in New York. We invite students to look at the many amenities offered here.

Students should understand that 92-Y is NOT “BYU APPROVED” housing. While 92-Y does their best to provide single gender dormitory floors/rooms for the students, there will likely be other residents who do not have the same standards as BYU.

Students must apply and arrange for housing on their own. Some suggestions are:

92-Y provides either single or double rooms to students in a similar layout to BYU’s Helaman Halls. Rooms are all furnished with a bed, desk, chair, dresser, desk lamp, bulletin board, and shelves for each resident and A/C along with other on-site amenities.

There is a free maid and bed linen service, fully equipped kitchen/dining areas on each floor, shared single-sex bathrooms, and laundry rooms located throughout the residence, to name a few amenities. 92-Y is a cultural center with many events and amenities to enjoy right in the building!

For a full list of amenities and information, check out their website at: 92Y.ORG/RESIDENCE

Another option is International House https://www.ihouse-nyc.org
