ew Jersey businesses needhelp, not more regulations. But, unfortunately, our state

government is proposing more restric-tions for employers in the name of more rights for workers.

Last week, a state Assembly com-

mittee proposed a bill that would guar-antee paid sick leave to almost allworkers in New Jersey. Workers inboth the private and public sectorswould accrue one hour of paid sickleave for every 30 hours worked, andwould be allowed to carry forward be-tween five and nine days from oneyear to the next, depending on the sizeof the company.

For a full-time employee who works40 hours per week, that would equateto almost nine guaranteed paid sickleave days per year.

Proponents of the bill say it wouldadd an increased level of security forthe nearly 1.1 million New Jersey em-

ployees who are unable to earn paidleave right now. Under the proposal, paid sick leave could be taken for onesown illness, or to care for another.

Not surprisingly, business groups inthe state are against the proposal, andyou can count us among those whofeel its bad for business.

A story in the Asbury Park Press, published last week, quotes DanielleCyr, the New Jersey director for Amer-icans of Prosperity, who says that 80percent of small businesses fail withintheir first 18 months of operation, even without mandates such as paidsick leave that she said small business-es cant afford. One thing she said

wraps it up firmly:Business growth inevitably leads

to improved benefits and pay, but it isregulations like these that stop growthbefore it can begin.

We couldnt agree more.A Bloomberg study recently found

that job growth in New Jersey was lessthan a third of that of New York, and, adjusted for inflation, our states medi-an household income declined 12.2percent, compared to 3.9 percent na-tionally.

At a time when New Jersey is reel-ing from a lack of job growth and jobloss on a major scale, small businessesin the state dont need more restrictiveregulations. They need help, incen-tives, not more reasons not to hire.

The motivation behind paid sickleave is noble, but it isnt necessary. If our government would focus on stimu-lating business and not stunting it, wewouldnt have this problem.

    in our opinion

No more business regulati onsG overnment shou ldnt pass paid sic k leave bill

Writer: Lets eliminate ObamasEbola Russian Roulette

I can solve 99 percent of the Ebola travelcrisis. No one can come into America for atleast 21 days after being to one of the coun-tries with an Ebola epidemic.

Screening of all flights into America attheir point of origin, simply done by check-ing the passport for date stamps of coun-tries visited. Easy and objective to under-stand.

While not 100 percent perfect, this would

eliminate the Ebola Russian Roulette thatthe Obama administration wants to playusing our lives by betting on whether cars, planes, cruise ships, bowling alleys andnow New York subways in testing to seehow easy it is to transmit Ebola in America.

Obama sees Ebola not as a pubic healthproblem but as a political public relationsand administration problem. By selectingRon Klain as Ebola czar, who has no med-ical background but was a staffer to VicePresidents Joe Biden and Al Gore as wellas dispenser of the $880 billion of stimulusmoney, is the consummate political fixer.

Sorry, Ebola cares not.Why doesn't Obama see this? Because it

would undermine his open borders immi-gration policy and soon to be announced il-legal immigrant amnesty by executiveorder which logically would require thesame types of controls. More than 700 peo-ple have been infected by the previouslyrare Enterovirus, with six children havingdied by the introduction of this diseaseinto America.

Fewer rights for diseases and morerights for American citizens!

At last weeks Medford Town-ship Board of Education meeting, the board applauded the releaseof last years NJASK test scores.Medford scored higher than simi-lar school districts across mostgrade levels.

    However, the board remained

concerned this years PARCC testmay take away classroom timeand negatively impact studentsscores in the future.

Director of CurriculumThomas Olsen presented the dis-tricts scores on the 2014 NJASKassessments and also examinedthe amount of time this yearsnew PARCC test will take com-pared with NJASK.

Some board members wereconcerned when Olsen saidPARCC would take much longerto complete than NJASK did.

Itll be approximately twice asmuch testing time, Olsen said. One of the primary concerns isthe time it will take away from in-

    struction.The lost instruction time goes

    further than taking the actualtest.

PARCC will be scheduled in adifferent manner than NJASK.Each student in grades threethrough eight will take a perform-ance-based assessment in Marchand an end-of-year assessment inMay. The tests must be taken

within a four-week period in eachmonth. All classes will not takethe test at the same time, mean-ing the schools will need to modi-fy their regular schedule aroundtesting.

Board member Michelle Ham-mel felt the amount of time eatenup with testing might negativelyimpact students ability to learn.Olsen said its hard to tellwhether there will be a negativeimpact.

No teacher wants to lose in-struction time, Olsen said. Itstoo early to see what this data willgive us.

Olsen said teachers have had togo through a number of training

sessions to prepare for the test.Unlike NJASK, Olsen said PARCCrequires the teachers, not the testadministrators, to perform a lot of the preparation work.

The teachers will be responsi-ble for a great deal of prepara-tion, he said.

Some board members are con-cerned about parents keepingtheir kids from taking the test.

While no parents have spoken outduring meetings in protest of theassessment, there was a concernsome parents might instruct theirchildren not to take the test.

Olsen stated the districts stu-dents are required to take the test.

Despite the concerns, theschool district is hoping to usePARCC as a tool to better its cur-riculum programming down theroad.

Olsen explained the NJASKtest is only accurate in showinghow Medford students are per-forming compared to their peersacross the state. PARCC will allowthe district to compare scoreswith other states that are takingthe same test.

It will be more useful data,Olsen said.

Olsen expects the computertest will also allow for faster re-sults.

The district is not able to re-view results from NJASK untilthe October board meeting be-cause of the amount of time ittakes to grade them. In compari-son, Olsen said PARCC resultsmight be available as early asJune.

We really dont get the ASKdata until September, Olsen said.

Board President Michael Ettersaid the district is trying to over-come the challenges of PARCCand use the data to evaluate stu-dents better.

Olsen also said PARCC is only a

small part of student evaluation. He said report cards, classroomperformance, grades and otherfactors will still carry weight inevaluating the districts educa-tional programs.

BOE worried PARCC may negativelyimpact students education

ter of Doris. She said her charac-ter is relatable not just to her, butto classmates who are not in-volved in theater.

Doris has a big change fromwhere she first starts out, Fishersaid. She is able to find herself.

The play is particularly specialfor the seniors in the cast. DavidThomas, playing the character of Leroy Johnson, said he has

changed like many of the play'scharacters do in the show. Therole of Johnson is much more se-rious than characters Thomashas played previously.

I usually like to play thehappy, fun one, he said.

Thomas said he has adapted tothe change in role. He saidFame has a different tone thanother plays, but it's not necessari-ly a bad thing.

It doesn't have the happiestending, but it has a good ending,

he said.Senior Lauren Critelli is also

playing Doris and said the tone of Fame makes it a much moreemotional show than other pastplays.

Everyone has experiencedsome emotion with it, Critellisaid.

One of the challenges in put-ting on Fame has been themusic. Director Marc Rohm en-listed extra help to put on theshow's two musical numbers. Oneof his assistants with the music isa student, Zak Fulcher.

Zak is a big help with themusic, Rohm said. He did all of the harmonies.

The music may be a change forthe fall production, but it was awelcome one for many studentswho also participate in Shawnee'sspring musical.

With the music and dancingnumbers, I think its a lot of fun,Critelli said.

The final act of the show takesa look at the characters' senioryear. The cast feels it will be a fit-ting send-off for seniors partici-pating in their final play. Evanssaid the final act on the final

night of show will be extra spe-cial.

It's going to be the last time wehave a chance to take the stage,he said.

The cast hopes their peers willcome out and become as emotion-ally invested in the play as theyare. Thomas said the charactersaren't just relatable to theater

kids, but to all high schoolers.Community members will

have four chances to see Fame. The show will be performed atShawnee High School's auditori-um on Nov. 13, 14 and 15 at 7 p.m.There will also be a 1 p.m. mati-nee on Nov. 15. Tickets are $12 foradults and $5 for students at thedoor.
