In the United States, DockDogs was established in 2000 as anathletic event in which dogs compete in jumping for distanceor height from a dock into a body of water. Its first event washeld at the ESPN 2000 Great Outdoor Games competition.
Fifteen years later, this organization has done nothing butgrow, and two of its biggest competitors live right in here inMedford.

The highest level of credibilitysomeone can achieve when at-tempting to tell a story is havinglived the experience themselves.
As a junior on the ShawneeHigh School basketball team,Tyson Hartnett’s basketball ca-reer took off, and 10 years later, heis here to share every minute de-tail of that journey through hisrecently written book, “Hoop
Dreams Fulfilled.”“I tell people I played pro bas-
ketball and they want to hear allabout it,” Hartnett said. “I’ve ex-perienced all of these things thataren’t normal, and I figured abook would be the best way to ex-press these experiences with peo-ple.”
Hartnett grew up in MedfordLakes and he played a lot of sports.
“Around seventh grade is whenI realized I had to choose some-thing,” Hartnett said. “Do I wantto play a lot of sports for fun andbe average or take one seriously?”
Hartnett had always enjoyedtraining for basketball and takingcountless shots in the gym. Atthat point in his life, he shared a
common goal of many of hispeers – to play professionally inthe NBA.
“I thought if I put the work in,it would end up happening in theend, but that’s not always thecase,” Hartnett said.
He referred multiple times toJason Thompson, a former AAUteammate of his who is now thelongest-tenured player on theNBA’s Sacramento Kings.
During their AAU days, therewas not a whole lot that separated
him from the team. However, after factoring in ele-
ments that were out of his controlsuch as size and politics that sur-round sports, hard work was notthe end all, be all.
Early in Hartnett’s career, heparticipated in All-Americancamps such as the Adidas Super-star Camp, Pangos All-American

his week has us thinking about
the future of our kids a lot.
High school seniors, eighth
graders and kindergarteners will all
celebrate graduations this week, clos-
ing one door behind them and opening
another in front of them.
It’s a vast new world that these kids
and young adults are living in, one
that is drastically different from the
one in which their parents lived at
their age.
Technology has provided plenty of
good, plenty of opportunities that the
kids of even 10 to 20 years ago didn’t
have. It’s mind-boggling.
And it’s also potentially dangerous.
The Internet can give a person a voice
that can reach millions of people with
a few taps on a keyboard. In terms of
civic involvement, in research and in
other areas, this is something plenty of
us would have loved to have had when
we were younger. With the opportuni-
ty, though, also comes the potential for
long-lasting damage.
Kids don’t often listen to their par-
ents and teachers when they try to
teach them lessons. So maybe they can
learn a lesson from pop star Iggy Azal-
ea.
Last week, posts that Azalea made to
Twitter four years ago have resur-
faced, with screen shots of her posts
showing insensitive sexual and racist
remarks. As a result, Azalea cancelled
a scheduled performance at Pitts-
burgh’s LGBT Pride event last week-
end.
The Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Net-
work didn’t march in the Pittsburgh
Pride parade because Azalea was
scheduled to perform.
Azalea, who turned 25 years old this
month, is facing the music for things
she posted as a 21-year-old.
It’s a lesson we can all learn from –
once you post it, it’s there forever.
Even though Azalea deleted those
four-year-old Tweets, they were still
available for someone to find.
So, kids, be careful what you post.
Be careful what you do online. It may
seem innocent now, but it could come
back to haunt you years down the line.
in our opinion
The Internet will follow youThe past is not truly the past online
Your thoughts
How do you try to teach your kids aboutbeing safe online? Share your thoughts onthis, and other topics, through a letter tothe editor.
He was there when you took your first
step, rode your first bike and caught yourfirst baseball. He was the one you calledwhen you aced that calculus exam. Hewalked you down the aisle on your wed-ding day. He became an amazing grandfa-ther to your kids.
He’s your one and only dad, and this Fa-ther’s Day, The Sun wants to celebrate withyour stories.
What makes your dad the best? From
“he grills the best burgers” to “he helpedme buy my first house” and everything inbetween, we want to know. Tell us whyyour life is better because of your dad.
Dads aren’t always determined by biolo-gy, either. Maybe you have another influ-ence in your life you would like to celebrateon Father’s Day. Maybe your uncle helpedraise you. Maybe you’ve watched your best
friend become the world’s best dad to his
own kids. Maybe you’d like to say thanks tothat teacher who made all the difference.Whoever it may be, share you story withThe Sun.
Send in your Father’s Day story, and aphoto of you and your dad, to our newsemail, which is listed to the right.
Watch for your stories in an upcomingissue of The Sun.

Chairville School after being heldat the Kirby’s Mill school in itsoriginal year.
The curriculum departmentwill also be continuing a specialneeds program that will be heldat the Chairville School, alongwith an art camp and a drama
camp. The Stay Active and Learncamp will be held this summer aswell. This is a similar concept tothe S.P.A.R.K.L.ers, but it was cre-ated to aid incoming first gradersas opposed to incoming kinder-garteners.
The S.P.A.R.K.L.ers programwill be a bit more challenging toplan for because there is no list of incoming kindergarteners likethere is for incoming firstgraders, so parents are encour-
aged to register as soon as possi-ble.
There will be three teacherschosen to teach the threeS.P.A.R.K.L.ers classes and threeteachers for the S.A.I.L. classes. These teachers will apply forthese opportunities via the cur-riculum office.
“We try to keep the numbersbetween 30 and 45,” Administra-tive Director of Programmingand Planning Tom Olsen said.
“So about 10 to 15 kids per class.”These students are qualifiedbased on a criterion that includesparent and teacher recommenda-tions.
The students are also screenedbefore and after the program. This screening consists of a se-ries of reading and writing ques-tions.
In the first year of the camp, the district noticed a significantdifference in the literacy of thestudents in the post screening
when comparing them to theirpre-screening results.
“We found that the students en-tered kindergarten with a higherlevel of skill development thanthey did in the kindergarten
screening that we did before theprogram,” Olsen said.
An added concern the curricu-lum department discussed wasthe heightened expectations bythe state for this group.
“I wouldn’t say they were com-ing in unprepared, but given theraised expectations by the state of New Jersey for kindergarteners,we thought we could help some of those students that needed aboost,” Olsen said.
The S.P.A.R.K.L.ers camp willbe tuition-free, despite the districtstarting to charge for some pro-grams.
“We try to provide programsand services, and these parentsthat are taxpayers shouldn’t alsohave to pay tuition for this pro-gram if they so choose to enrolltheir child,” Olsen said. “We en-courage parents to send theirkids, and we think the tuition-freeaspect will provide for a betterturnout.”

camp and was even on an AAUteam coached by NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry.
He received a full scholarshipoffer during his junior year atShawnee to play with a Division-Ibasketball team at the Universityof Maine.
“I had accomplished my high
school goal,” Hartnett said. However, his experience at theUniversity of Maine was notquite what he expected it to be,and after two years of only get-ting on the court three times, hedecided it was time for somethingelse.
“I believe there were some poli-tics that kept me from playing, but I knew I had two years of eli-gibility left and I knew I wanted
to spend it somewhere making
highlights as opposed to sittingon the bench,” Hartnett said.
He received a call from thehead coach of the Rowan collegebasketball team, Joe Cassidy.
“I visited, met the team andloved everything about it,” Hart-nett said. “It’s a generally localschool based on where I grew up,so I knew some of the guys al-ready and I viewed it as the per-fect place to finish my career.”
Hartnett finished his college
stint at Rowan as an all-confer-ence player and acknowledgedcoach Cassidy for being the onewho helped him find his confi-dence again.
Going from Division III basket-ball to the NBA is nearly unheardof, so with the help of his formerAAU coach Barry, he was able toland on a professional team in

Sweden.He played professionally in
Sweden, Argentina and Chile allfor one year each.
“The idea of playing profes-sionally has a glamorous worldlyfeel to it,” Hartnett said. “Whenpeople think of pro sports, theythink of the NBA, private jets,Bentleys and MTV cribs.”
The reality of it was described
much differently by Hartnett.“.1 percent of us ever actuallymake it that high. Most just endup playing two to three times aday, making a decent amount of money,” Hartnett said.
Many basketball fans also don’trecognize that foreign teams aretypically only allowed one to twoAmericans, so it can be very hardfor those players to fit in with the
rest of the team, especially if they don’t speak the native lan-guage.
After his career overseas, Hart-nett returned to the States anddrifted with the wind for a while, doing a few jobs here and there.
Eventually he came to termswith the NBA being out of reach,so he decided to try to help ath-letes with their careers throughteaching them different skillsthat were passed down to him.
Hartnett created a websitecalled BasketballTrainingClub.com, an online tutorial for hope-
ful young athletes. Founded in2013, it contains a collection of more than 440 videos, e-books anda support community to help ath-letes. He also got heavily intowriting as an outlet to voice hisopinions and experiences to thethings he felt so strongly about.
Hartnett viewed writing as thenext chapter of his life. He re-ceived positive feedback on his
writing and was encouraged bynumerous people to write a book.
“After about three or four
drafts of writing the book, I re-vised it down to what I think besttold my story,” Hartnett said.
The real behind-the-scenesstory adds perspective about a ca-reer that is not all successes as itis portrayed in the public eye.
Hartnett’s goal is to provide the“real view” of what the commondream of playing professionalbasketball consists of.
“There's a lot that goes on in-side the minds of athletes and
their families during a career. Iwant to bring light to these thingsthat people are scared to talkabout, or they just don't knowenough about, “ Hartnett said.
You can purchase a paper copyof Hartnett’s book or the Kindleversion atwww.amazon.com/Hoop-Dreams-Fulfilled-Redemption-Profession-al/dp/1507855788.

handler. While Brian is technical-ly the handler, his wife Jenny andtheir other GSP, Hooch, enjoy thesuccesses they’ve experienced as
a family.“Our family is just the four of
us, so the time together is the bestpart, traveling all over and justsharing all of the laughs and ex-periences makes it all worth-while,” Brian said.
Cello is a bit more establishedthan Hooch at this point in her ca-reer, as she is known within the
dock diving community as pound-for-pound one of the best dogs in-volved in the sport. However,Hooch is certainly on the up andcoming, as he is not even 1 yearold.
Both dogs donate all cashprizes to the GSP Rescue of NewJersey, and all food and toy prizesto The Animal Orphanage in
Voorhees. They have also beenchosen as ambassadors for Tur-boPUP, a company that special-izes in meal bars for dogs.
Brian and Jenny became theproud parents of Limoncello inMay 2011. She received herunique name after Jenny’s grand-father’s secret recipe, so her fullname is Tommy D’s Limoncello.
She is the ultimate water dog.“Her entire body shivers with
excitement with the site of waterto jump into or lay in,” Jennysaid.
Luckily the Beadlings have adock right in their backyard witha lake for the dogs to jump in attheir leisure. In fact, that is wherethis all started.
“When we were out back, wewould occasionally throw a toy inthe water and she would get it in apretty impressive fashion,” Briansaid. “I happened to have recentlyseen DockDogs on ESPN andthought we should give it a try for
fun.”Cello placed second in the first
competition she attended, and ather second competition, she tookhome first place.
This is only her second full
year competing, so the Beadlingsweren’t sure how to qualify herfor the world championship com-petition originally. This year, theywere determined to get her in, sothey enlisted her in all of theevents that could help her qualify.
“She went to the first iron dogcompetition and won it, so shewas already qualified at that
point,” Brian said. “We are nowdedicating the rest of the summerto getting Hooch in as well.”
These competitions consist of a series of events that test theleaping and swimming abilities of the dogs.
The “big air jump” is per-formed on a 40-foot dock coveredin AstroTurf in which one dogand one trainer run down andtoss a toy in to see how far out thedog can jump.
The “speed retrieve” is anevent in which the dog swims tothe end of a pool to grab abumper and swims back whilebeing timed.
And the most popular of all of these events is the “extremevert,” a contest in which abumper is set up about eight feetover the water and is continuous-ly raised until the last dog is leftstanding.
The Iron Dog is a combinationof all three of these, with scores
averaged. This is what Cello willbe competing in in Iowa for theDockDogs world championships.
DockDogs has become a globalcorporation over the years. Themultiple locations make compet-
ing in any of these events conven-ient for dog owners.
Some of these dogs spendhours with trainers and practic-ing in facilities, while some folks, such as the Beadlings, do it for theenjoyment of playing with theirdogs.
They are often accompanied byCello and Hooch everywhere they
go.“We do everything together,
dock diving, they come out with,we even bring them to winerieson occasion,” Brian said.
On their most recent adven-ture, they took a trip to the Fair-fax County Fair in Virginiawhere Hooch tried “extremevert” for the first time and actual-ly jumped higher than Cello.
Hooch is actually a half broth-er of Cello’s that the Beadlingsbrought home last July.
“Since we just adore Cello, andthink she is just the most amaz-ing pup, when we found out inJuly 2014 that Limoncello’s moth-er had another litter, we could nothelp but go visit her and see thepuppies,” Jenny said.
You will not have any troublefinding them online if you are in-terested in reading more aboutthese exceptionally talented pups.
Cello has her own website (cel-loscorner.com), which has attract-
ed more than 17,240 visitors from96 countries. They also have morethan 2,300 Instagram followers(instagram.com/celloscorner)and more than 800 Facebook fans(facebook.com/CellosCorner).
