Environment o Emissions from

aviation account for 2-3% global CO2 and rising;

o No firm plans to limit emissions;

o Aviation industry proposals are disingenuous.

Economy o Aviation is a key

enabler of the global economy;

o People like affordable flights;

o Limiting flying by price seen as unfair to poorer (less rich) people.

o Start from a sustainability perspective:

“We like to fly but we need to do so with significantly lower environmental impact”

o Key Insight:

Do we need to use the fast jet as the aviation work horse?

o What is an alternative to fast jet?

Industry (outside aviation): “We might consider taking on new warehouses in different places trying to change the whole logistics network.”

Aviation Industry: “It would not get my vote.”

“The basic issue … is fast equals business; slow equals leisure.”

Government: “You are going to have to have international agreement on this.”

Key Findings

1. Policy stalemate;

2. People do not know that it could be different;

3. Each stakeholder is defending their position;

4. Solution requires international agreement;

5. No one is willing to lead change.
