Volunteer Manitoba recognizes Filipino Journal 's role in the community

The Golden Hand Award for Media is a posthumous award to the late Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros,

former published and editor in chief; and to his surviving husband Rod E. Cantiveros at the 30th Volunteers Award presentation held recently at the Convention Centre.

The award, presented by Liz Wilson, vice-president of Volunteer Manitoba, recognizes the role of the Filipino Journal for more than 27 years of dedication,of serving the Filipino community and other Winnipeg communties through the sponsorship of wide range of the various community charitable initiatives. The Filipino Journal, founded in 1987, has become the pulse of the Filipino Community.

Through the effort and dedication of Mrs. Linda Cantiveros, who passed away last March 4, 2008, the pioneering Filipino Journal in Manitoba and in the Western Canada has become the dynamic mouthpiece of the achievements of the Filipino-Canadians, especially the youth. And thru the passion of her elder son, Ron Francis Cantiveros, after he took over as publisher and editor-in-chief and a development officer, the Filipino Journal has surged the number of pages, its coverage and readership and advertisers. Thru Ron’s cross-cultural involvement in the Manitoba, Filipino Journal has become active in various fundraising efforts, to name a few, Cancer Care, United Way, Winnipeg Harvest, Filipino Disaster Relief Committee. Quest for the Playoffs Ends

Even before the final horn sounded in the Winnipeg Jets final game, they

had known their fate. A clearly dejected team had found out that the final two playoff spots had been claimed and they would not be in the postseason. Despite the fans at the MTS Centre showing their undying loyalty to them in the final minute, the Jets could only be disappointed in how close they had come.

The final five games of the Jets season were nothing short of exciting. Coming off a 4-3 shootout win against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Winnipeg came back two nights later with a 4-3 overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes. Dustin Byfuglien

was the overtime hero scoring the game winner.

One of the hottest teams in the NHL came into town and provided the Jets all they could handle and more as the New York Islanders came from behind to win in a shootout. Kyle Wellwood had two goals for the Jets but Islanders star Jonathan Tavares scored the shootout winner to the disappointment of the MTS Centre.

The Jets would hit the road and take on the Buffalo Sabres and the Washington Capitals. Winnipeg got off on the right foot as they edged Buffalo 2-1. Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec stood on his head stopping 24 shots to keep the Jets playoffs hopes alive.

With a chance to gain some ground on the New York Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot, the Winnipeg Jets were outgunned by Alexander Ovechkin and the Capitals. Despite coming from behind, the Caps held on for a 5-3 win and clinched the Southeast Division title. It would all come down to the Jets last game of the year and would need a lot of help.

Winnipeg would make their final stand at home against the Montreal Canadiens. They would need to win and hope that the Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers would lose their remaining games. The Jets were holding their own as they held a 2-1 lead going into the third period. However, during the intermission, both the Rangers and Senators won on overtime heroics and would eliminate the Jets out of playoff contention. The Jets came out flat in the third knowing their fate and would lose 4-2.

Even though the Winnipeg Jets fell short of 2012-2013 expectations, there will be plenty

Vote wisely and responsibly

The May 13 mid-term elections present an array of senatorial candidates of various

persuasions, backgrounds, and abilities. The “Magic 12” or the 12 top vote getters win. And as expected the candidates of the two major coalitions – Team PNoy and the United Nationalist Coalition (UNA) -- dominate the scene due to their huge war chests and well-organized campaigns. The other candidates who are running solo or independent are not making any headway and more than likely they would all lose. And that’s the sad part because many of them are of good quality and would serve the people well in the Senate.

Senators play an important part in governance. They provide balance to a two-chamber legislative body where the lower chamber, the House of Representatives, is composed of 287 congressional district representatives elected by their constituents or through the party-list system. The upper chamber, the Senate, consists of 24 senators who are elected at-large by all voters. Once elected to the Senate, that person qualifies to run for president or qualifies as a “presidentiable,” a term used to denote that he or she has the presumed qualifications of a presidential candidate. In other words, the Senate is a stepping-stone to the presidency. And it is for this reason that those elected to the Senate should have the qualification,

experience, and character of a “presidentiable.”

It is interesting to note that the upper chamber is named Senate (from the Latin word senatus), which comes from senex, “old man.” The original senate was the Roman Senate, which was represented by respected elders of the community. It was presumed that elders have the experience and wisdom to make the right decisions for the people, not for their personal interests. Although, in today’s age younger generations are running for the Senate, they should still be measured vis-à-vis a wise “old man.”Election cheating

In the past, many electoral contests were won by cheating. As a popular cliché says, “In Philippine elections, there are no losers; only the winners and those who were cheated.” Remember the time when the dead voted? Or candidates who got zero vote in their own hometowns? Or candidates who bought votes with counterfeit money? Or candidates who switched ballot boxes after the polls closed? Or those who intimidated voters with armed goons?

When the late strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos ran for reelection in 1969, the term “Three G’s” was popularized. It stands for “Guns, Goons, and Gold.” Today, “Three G’s” remains the surest way to win elections.

But after the EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986 that toppled the Marcos dictatorship, a new form of election cheating was devised. Called “dagdag-bawas” – literally translates to add-subtract – it simplifies election cheating. There is no need to use the “Three G’s” or buy votes or switch ballot boxes. All a candidate needs is lots of money to bribe Commission of Elections (Comelec) officials – called “operators” or “mechanics” -- to perform a simple hocus pocus with the outcome of an election, which is to shave the votes of one candidate and count it in favor of the cheating candidate. Their combined totals would still be the same; however, the favored candidate would show more votes than the cheated candidate. This “wholesale” cheating is hard to detect because those who are supposed to tally the votes are the ones manipulating them.

With the implementation of the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines in the May 2010 elections, a new form of cheating was created – “electronic dagdag-bawas.” And since they’re harder to detect, election cheating is institutionalized. Unless the Comelec dumped the PCOS machines and adopted a more reliable automated election system, election cheating would be the rule rather than the exception.

Having said that, the May 13, 2013 mid-term elections could be a replay of the 2010 elections since the same PCOS machines would be used. And for as long as the Comelec “operators” are still around, only candidates with money have a chance of winning.

That brings to mind the question: What is then the use of voting if the winners are determined by dagdag-bawas cheating? In my opinion, the existence of dagdag-bawas cheating

schemes makes it important for the voters to turn out on Election Day and vote for the good – and deserving – senatorial candidates. While it may not guarantee the victory of all of the deserving candidates, it would minimize the chances of the “undeserving candidates” from making it to the “Magic 12” list. “Magic 12”

The latest Pulse Asia survey shows the rankings of the senatorial candidates. The Top Six are: Loren Legarda (Rank 1-2), Chiz Escudero (1-2), Grace Poe (3-4), Alan Peter Cayetano (3-7), Cynthia Villar (4-9), and Antonio Trillanes (4-10).

The Bottom Six are: Bam Aquino (4-10), JV Ejercito Estrada (5-11), Nancy Binay (5-11), Koko Pimentel (6-12), Edgardo Angara (8-14), and Migz Zubiri (10-16).

Behind them are four candidates on the 11th and 12th spots, namely: Gringo Honasan (11-16), Jack Enrile (11- 16), Risa Hontiveros (12-17), and Ramon Magsaysay Jr. (12-17).

From this “Magic 12” list of 16 possible winners, six are running for re-election – Legarda, Escudero, Cayetano, Trillanes, Honasan, and Pimentel; four are currently members of the House of Representatives – Villar, Estrada, Angara, and Enrile; two were former senators – Zubiri and Magsaysay; one was a former congressional representative – Hontiveros; and the other three are neophytes (no political office held) – Binay, Aquino, and Poe. In my opinion, these neophytes have no business running for a Senate seat. They are not fit for the office. If they want to hold a political office, they should run for a congressional seat or local positions (e.g., governor, mayor). Political dynasties

There is a public clamor to put

an end to political dynasties. Section 26 of Article II of the 1987 Philippine Constitution declares: “The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.” But Congress – by design or neglect – has failed to pass enabling legislation that would define “political dynasties.” The congressional members’ self-serving inaction to pass such law should not be an excuse for political dynasties to ignore the spirit of the Constitution for which they would be sworn to uphold if they were elected.

However, their failure to pass an anti-dynasty law is not an excuse for sidestepping their constitutional duty. If they don’t want to do it because of self-preservation, then it is up to the voters to decide whom to elect. They know who the dynastic candidates are.Character factor

And finally, the voters need to root out candidates who have checkered past such as involvement in corruption cases or run-in with the law like shooting incidents. They have no business occupying a Senate seat. A “senatoriable” should – nay, must! -- possess a character beyond reproach.

Article II Section 1 of the Philippine Constitution says: “The Philippines is a democratic and republican State. Sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them.” It is for this reason that the people have the final say on who their representatives should be by exercising their right to vote. But with this right comes responsibility and requires a great deal of wisdom on whom to elect.

QPAM celebrates "Mayuhan" on May 25

The long tradition among the Quezonians in Winnipeg, Manitoba,

is the annual celebration of “MAYUHAN” or the “Mayflower and San Isidro Festival”, in honor of San Isidro, patron saint of the farmers. This festival will be held on May 25, Saturday, at Kildonan Park - Shelter 2A & 2B at 10 a.m. till afternoon. This year’s celebration is sponsored by the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba.

Led by hermano and hermana mayor; and assisted by hermanito and hermanita, and grace by lovely sagalas and consortes, the "Mayuhan" in the Philippines is one of the most celebrated not only in Quezon Province but also in other parts of the country, especially in Metro Manila where former queens and movie stars are featured as Reyna Elena, Reyna Emperatriz and other religious titles. Young girls also give religious touch as angels.

“This Mayuhan has become our annual tradition in Winnipeg and we would like to invite our kababayans to share the spirit of this religious event,” QPAM, Inc.

Simplicity and fun marks Golden Screen Awards

Lovi Poe and Jennylyn Mercado star in ‘The Bride & The Lover’

The 10th Golden Screen Awards for Movies recently held at Teatrino

in Greenhills, San Juan City differed from the usual star award ceremony as it turned out to be a casual, fun-filled night among

artists, the press and other people working in the entertainment industry.

For one, the ladies who came in the small venue opted to wear simpler and more comfortable dresses instead of glamorous

designer gowns. Also noticeable was the program, hosted by John “Sweet” Lapus, which instead of spectacular production numbers, came out fairly simple spiced by a few song numbers. Though the venue seems lacking in space for the important occasion, it nevertheless allowed for an intimate ambiance that permitted the stars to freely mingle with each other.

Director Jun Lana’s indie drama-comedy “Bwakaw,” came out the big winner of the night as it won best picture (drama). The other notable winners were best cinematography for Carlos

Mendoza; best story, best original screenplay and best director (his first) for Lana; and best actor for Eddie Garcia.

The award-giving body also bestowed the Dekada Award to Ara

Mina, Cherry Pie Picache, Eugene Domingo, Judy Ann Santos, Iza Calzado, Zsa Zsa Padilla Maricel Soriano, Aga Muhlach, Dennis Trillo, Coco Martin, Tirso Cruz III, Alfred Vargas, Sid Lucero, Eddie Garcia, Jeffrey Jeturian, APT Entertainment, Quantum Films and Star Cinema. These actors and production outfits qualified for the award for winning won at least two Golden Screen trophies in the past decade.

The 10th Golden Screen Awards for Movies was organized by the Entertainment Press Society.

The latest movie offering from Regal Entertainment Inc. “The Bride and the

Lover” features actresses Lovi Poe and Jennylyn Mercado.

The audience may guess the film’s storyline from the title alone. As it turned out, the fights and confrontation scenes between Lovi and Jennylyn took four hours to shoot. According to Director Joel Lamangan, the fight scene

includes slapping and hair-pulling aside from the verbal brawls.

Of course the movie is not all about fights. There are sizzling love scenes that Lovi and Jennylyn did with their leading man Paulo Avelino.

“The Bride and the Lover” also stars Alex Castro, Joem Bascon, Tim Yap, Kat Alano, Carla Dunareanu, Carlo Gonzales, Tom Rodriguez, Ariel Ureta, Buboy Garovillo, Carmi Martin, Timmy Cruz, Cai Cortez, and Arron Villaflor.

Avila, Spain - the "City of Stones and Saints"A city in central Spain of

58,245 people situated above sea level on a flat

summit of a rocky hill, Avila ("High Mountain"), also known as the "City of Stones and Saints", is notably well-known for having amazingly intact medieval city walls as well as a famous pilgrimage site for being the birthplace and home of Santa Teresa de Jesus, the first woman in Catholic history to receive the title "Doctor of the Church" in 1970.

The imposing walls of Avila, built in Romanesque style, date back to the medieval ages. It was King Alfonso, Spanish king of the autonomous region of Leon and Castille, who ordered the construction of this fortification after his conquest of Avila in 1090 by using the captured Moorish prisoners to build the walls as protection against the invading Moors.

The protective walls, still in perfect condition and extending 2,500 meters (8,202 ft.), encircle the old town. Shaped like an irregular rectangle and punctuated by 90 crenellated and heavily fortified towers and round turrets, the walls have 9 accessible gates of which the Alcazar Gate (Puerta del Alcazar) as the most solemn and spectacular. During the medieval ages particularly in the 11th century the walls, in addition to its defensive function, guard the city against outbreaks of plagues and epidemics. Today, the entire system of the walls, declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, is the largest fully and beautifully illuminated monument in the world.

For a small fee one can take a walk on the top of the walls.

A visit to the grey-granite Gothic Cathedral of Avila and to the Convent of Santa Teresa provides us some time for meditation and prayer.

Laid out in the shape of a Latin cross, the Cathedral is regarded as the first and oldest cathedral in Spain. Integrated into the city walls the cathedral with its magnificent altarpiece and beautiful stained glass windows has an external appearance of a strong temple fortress.

A popular pilgrimage shrine of the Roman Catholics the world over is the Convento de Santa Teresa, the primary shrine of Santa Teresa, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus. A Carmelite nun reformer and a prominent Spanish mystic and writer, Santa Teresa is the patron saint of headache sufferers and special Catholic writers. Her symbol is a heart, an arrow and a book.

The convent, located on the Plaza de la Santa and standing over the site of Teresa's birth, enshrines the saint's relics built shortly after

her canonization as a saint in 1622, 40 years after death. The relics include a finger from her right hand, the sole of one of her sandals, her rosary beads, and a cord she used to flagellate herself. In 1817, the Cortes, the legislative body of Spain, declares St. Teresa as the patron saint of Spain.

Outside the walled city is a little shrine known as "The Four Posts" (Los Cuatros Postes) located on a hill overlooking the walls, marking the spot where, at age 7, Santa Teresa's uncle stopped her from running off with her brother to seek martyrdom in battle with the Moors. There's a cross covered by 4-posted roofless canopy.

Don't leave Avila without tasting its world-famous sweets, the "Yema" (sugared egg yolks) made by local nuns and commonly sold in small shops throughout the city.

This English band may be regarded paradoxically as popular and obscure at the

same time—popular because their 1982 single “I Melt with You” continues to be a favorite radio staple in many countries; obscure, for many people recognize the song but not the band and usually dismiss them as a “one-hit wonder” despite their seven-studio discography that spawned several radio singles.

Personal DiscoveryI discovered Modern English

in the summer of 1983. I was on a vacation at the house of my Aranzamendez uncles and aunties in Better Living Subdivision in Bicutan, Parañaque, Philippines, whose friends were into Punk Rock and New Wave. I was only 12 years old! It was the era when youngsters preferred house parties powered by mobile music over going to clubs. It was also the time when movies could be watched at home by way of Betamax films. There were no VCDs, DVDs, nor even VHS tapes yet. One day, my Uncle Edmon's friend Rey Aguila came over with a new Betamax tape in hand. It was the 1983 film Valley Girl, starring Nicolas Cage (as a romantic New Waver who lived downtown) and Deborah Foreman (as a happy-go-lucky girl who lived in the valley). More importantly, the movie featured as the main theme song a track called “I Melt with You,” by a band known as Modern English.

Formed in Essex, England, in 1979, Modern English may have eventually become more known especially in the 1980s as a Pop-leaning New Wave group alongside the likes of A Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, and ABC; but it actually started as a Gothic-sounding

Viva la Ripoff!(On a Song that Wanted Also to Rule the World)

While my kids were watching A.N.T. Farm on TV, an intermission music

video of a song played, in which the intro was a solo violin melody. It caught my discerning ears because it obviously sounded to me like the carrier string melody of Coldplay's "Viva la Vida." Naturally, I thought it was a cover—a decent Pop version, I thought.

I was surprised to realize that it was not a cover but a totally different song, "Break My Heart" by a certain Victoria Duffield. After listening to the song several times more, I would certainly consider it a ripoff.

A ripoff is a song or any other piece of work which is obviously a derivation of an already existing work but which the “ripper” did not acknowledge or give any due credit or even honorable mention.

Doing my homework, I checked the song/artist out on Wikipedia at once, especially to see if the article would mention that the song was inspired by "Viva la Vida." Unfortunately, no mention about it.

Acknowledging a direct derivation of or, at the least, having been inspired by another artist is maintaining artistic integrity and an expression of homage to one's influences; denying such is tantamount to disrespect; worse, plagiarism; or, at the least, riding on the coattails of the popularity of others. In an interview of Duffield shown in a segment of the same show, she said that she wrote the song (I was surmising, only the lyric) but again no specific mention of who wrote the music, more so if it was inspired by "Viva la Vida."

Victoria Duffield is a Canadian singer, a contestant of YTV's The Next Star (Season 3) who got to the Top 6. She released her debut album, Shut Up and Dance, on August 2012, which included the single in question. A copy of the album is already on my files, ready for my listening in its entirety and for my reviewing purposes.

New Wave Is as Strong, Relevant, and Influential as Ever

Coldplay is an English New Wave / Alternative Rock band formed in 1996 in London, England. Its members are Chris Martin (vocals, piano, guitar), Guy Berryman (bass), Jonny Buckland (guitar), and Will Champion (drums). So far, the band has released five albums: Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005), Viva la Vida or Death and and All His Friends (2008), and Mylo Xyloto (2011). Recommended songs include "Yellow," "Don't Panic," "Clocks," "The Scientist," "Speed of Sound," "Lovers in Japan," "Hurts like Heaven," and "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall."

Coldplay is one of the flag bearers of New Wave music in the current generation.

craved for more of Modern English. Beginning in 1985, I finally acquired cassette-tape copies of the band's albums. The first of these was Mesh and Lace, originally released in 1981 on 4AD Records. It introduced me to the Postpunk/Gothic sound of Modern English—dark lyrics and haunting vocals on a backdrop of low-register bass, pounding tribal beats, angular guitars, and synthesizer drone. Tracks that best represent this description are “Smiles and Laughter”; “Swans on Glass”; “Black Houses”; and “Dance of Devotion (A Love Song),” a regular staple on WXB 102 during this Philippine FM radio station’s heyday in 1986.

the instrumentation has become upbeat and more intricate and the melodies more catchy and engaging. My other personal picks off this album are “Someone’s Calling” (another WXB 102 airplay regular in 1986), “Life in the Gladhouse,” “After the Snow,” “Carry Me Down,” and “Tables Turning.”

sounds, presence of piano and synth sounds, incorporation of strings orchestration, and the charismatic charm of its vocalist. Besides, Martin acknowledges that Coldplay's influences include U2, R.E.M., and a-ha, all of which are pioneers of the genre.

Final NoteMany music critics say that the

Internet has made music-making a novelty and no longer a serious art. I disagree. The Internet, I think, is a neutral thing—like many other technological developments. It's how an individual takes advantage of its positive uses and how she allows herself to fall slave to its trappings. There will always be original and passionate artists in every decade and generation; there will always be mediocre ones—those who value commerciality over originality and creativity. Back in the old days when the likes of Bach and Mozart reigned supreme in the area of music composing, it’s not hard to imagine that there were already mediocre wannabes and ungrateful, sneaky copycats—so as today. Many things never change—usually only the time context and the circumstances do.

Music-wise, I think that the Internet has, for the better, revolutionized the music world; it continues to empower artists especially those who have no chance of using the machineries of record companies. And for diligent music critics who really spend the time to assess and analyze music on a deeper level, the Internet makes researching and validating information easy.

Losing Permanent Residency

Canadian permanent residents must be physically present in Canada for 730

days in every five year period to maintain their Canadian permanent residence. When applying for a permanent resident card, two questions that arise are: 1. when does Citizenship and Immigration Canada determine the five year period and, 2. if a person is issued a permanent resident card, can he or she can travel to Canada without any issues until the card expires. The answer to these questions can be found in the case of Faisal Nawaz Khan which was decided by the federal court in December.

What happened in Mr. Khan’s case?

Mr. Khan submitted an application to renew his permanent resident card and, in assessing the application, the officer made a determination that Mr. Khan was in Canada for the minimum amount of time as of the date that the application was received. As a result, a letter was sent to Mr. Khan asking him to pick up his permanent resident card at the local immigration office within 180 days. Mr. Khan went to the local office within the 180 days.

When Mr. Khan went to the local office, the officer there asked Mr. Khan to write down all the dates he had been absent in Canada

as of that date. The officer then found that Mr. Khan did not meet the 730 day residency requirement as of that date. The officer then refused to give him his permanent resident card.

Can a local office refuse to hand over a Permanent Resident card?

In this case, the federal court judge found that once a decision has made to issue a permanent resident card, the role of the local officer is restricted. Under the law, the only job of the local officer was to compare Mr. Khan’s original documents with the copies he provided in his mailed-in application. If the documents did not match, the permanent resident card could have been withheld. However, since they did match, the permanent resident card should have been given to Mr. Khan.

Does holding a valid Permanent Resident card mean that a person’s Permanent Resident status cannot be taken away?

While Mr. Khan was entitled to a permanent resident card, the judge did say that the local officer was entitled to confirm whether Mr. Khan met the residency obligations as of the date that he appeared at the local office. While the local officer could not refuse to give Mr. Khan a permanent resident card, if the local officer

determined that Mr. Khan had not met the residency requirement, the local officer could have made an immigration report and begin proceedings to take away Mr. Khan’s Canadian permanent residency.

What can be learned from this case?

As this case demonstrates, it is important to make careful note of the time an application to obtain a permanent resident card is submitted, especially, if the amount of time the permanent resident has spent in Canada is close to the minimum 730 day period over the 5 years. In addition, it is also important to note that even though an individual may have a valid permanent resident card, this does not stop Citizenship and Immigration Canada from investigating and perhaps even taking away permanent resident status if it can be determined that the individual does not meet the 730 day requirement after a Permanent Resident card is issued.

Calamities or natural disasters happen in the Philippines and in some

other countries with so much damage to lives and properties. Most of the time, the people are not prepared for emergency, and much worst, the people suffer agony on the increasing death toll coupled by non-availability of the basic necessities in life.

The natural response from the various countries, various organizations is to help by donating money and materials to the victims, thanks to the continued effort of volunteers to raise fund to address the demand. Other associations will react and initiate fundraising and whatever amount raised, the money is channeled to

an international agency or being sent direct to the areas affected.

After the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipinos in Manitoba had helped the Philippines and Haiti, the officers and members have realized that there must be a continuous fund raising. So MACCFA decided to set-up HELPfund, a calamity fund initiative to focus on raising money.

"Our move is proactive. We are planning to raise fund ahead to any kind of disaster or calamity that might happen to our home country anytime. If we have funds available when the calamity strikes, we can immediately respond to the needs of the victims," Rod E. Cantiveros, president of MACFFA, said." We

organized HELPfund initiative to address the immediate response to help the victims."

On the long road through the prairiesTravelling from Winnipeg to

Calgary can be a long and painful drive, especially

through the flat prairie landscapes of Saskatchewan. The only saving grace is that you can drive at 110km/hr on the TransCanada Hwy. According to Google Maps, the distance between the two cities is approximately 1328 kms and should take you about 13 hours.

Last month, I had an opportunity to make a Calgary-Winnipeg run with two different vehicles – 2013 Kia Sorento SX AWD and the 2104 Mazda CX-5 GT with SKYACTIVE. After spending close to 14 hours in the driver’s seat, there are several key things to remember when head out on a long road trip.

Luckily, the Sorento had SiriusXM Satellite Radio and enjoyed the consistent familiarity of XM channels as we crossed into

Saskatchewan and Alberta. Coming back from Calgary, the CX-5 only had the SiriusXM preview channel and that’s where the AM/FM scan button comes in quite handy. I’m sure Saskatchewan has great radio stations as I ended up hooking up my Samsung Galaxy SIII via Bluetooth to listen to songs on my phone.

Traveling to Calgary and back, we had our fair share of luggage, camera gear and bags of pasalubong. Thanks to the multiple stops for coffee, there were more than enough drink holders for everyone. One cup holder in the door pockets, and two in the centre console.

Just after leaving Swift Current, we were hit by a freak blowing snowstorm that appeared out of nowhere. Mother Nature has been quite crazy recently and had to turn our cool passenger cabin on full heat before the windows fogged up.

Interestingly enough, I also turned on the heated steering wheel button on the Sorento. That feature was unavailable on the CX-5. Even in this seemingly mild snow storm, I can only begin to appreciate how useful a heated steering wheel can be during our frigid Manitoba winters.

Trunk space and access in the Sorento is large as 2nd and 3rd row seats can be folded down to give you maximum cargo space. The retractable rear cabin cover can be removed if necessary but a welcome option to hide any valuable belongings. In the Mazda CX-5, the folding 40-20-40 rear passenger seats can be flipped down directly from levers on each side of the rear storage cabin. The only thing you would have to remember is to move the front passenger seats up as the rear seat headrests snags midway.

In real world fuel efficiency ratings over 1400 kms, the average highway driving fuel rating ended up 12.4L/100kms for the Kia Sorento. In the Mazda CX-5 with its smaller 4-cyclinder SKYACTIVE technology, fuel efficiency was rated to 8.8L/100kms.

Price as tested for the 2013 Kia Sorento 3.5L SX AWD was $41,295. For the 2014 Mazda CX-5, the price as tested was $35,045.

Other great features in the Kia Sorento included the 3rd row of seating and the double moon roof. In the Mazda CX-5, the notable features

that I enjoyed were the automatic rain sensing windshield wipers and the fact that this was a 4-banger

and handled extremely well on the highway.


Marching to her own music

To learn how to play an instrument is one thing but to create your own composition

takes a lot time, practice, hard work, dedication and a great sense of imagination.

Reyna Reyes of Winnipeg, Manitoba was amongst one of twelve exceptional performers from across Canada selected to perform at the 2013 Western Canada Regional Junior Original Concert (JOC). The event organized by Yamaha Canada is meant to “Showcase original Compositions by Yamaha Young Ambassadors of Music”. The prestigious event was held at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre on April 28, 2013.

grade 6 French Immersion student at Ecole St. Germain, started playing the piano when she was just 4 years old. She is a graduate of the Yamaha Junior Special Advanced Course (JSAC) and has won many piano competitions. Reyna began composing her own music at the age of 6, and has also performed at Yamaha JOC events in Whistler, Calgary and most recently Vancouver.

Reyna is the daughter of Jon and Cynthia Reyes, granddaughter to Arcadio & Lydia Baquiran and Reynold & Leticia Reyes. She also has a younger brother Miguel (age 6), who will be starting his JSAC course this fall. Congratulations again to Reyna, one of the many talents that we have in our Filipino Community.



How can you expand your small business in an increasingly competitive market?by Jackie Doming

If you’re not sure how, Ryan Caligiuri has a few suggestions. On April 18,

growth strategist Caligiuri shared the method behind his marketing genius at the Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC) monthly meeting.

Caligiuri is the Director of Internationally Accepted Marketing Standards (IAMS) with the International Institute of Marketing Professionals (IIMP),

working with worldwide experts to develop and manage the world’s first marketing designation – the Certified Marketing Management Professional (CMMP).

He is also the founder and CEO of The Growth Network, a training program for entrepreneurs of small-and-medium sized businesses. His strategies have been used by organizations across the globe in the fields of technology, telecommunication,

government, gaming and beyond.Caligiuri called the secret

behind his success the Amazon River Framework, a four point marketing method necessary to help a company grow. His methods included fostering credibility; offering a compelling competitive advantage; generating leads and demands; and creating new revenue streams.

He engaged the meeting’s attendees with a workshop-style

presentation, challenging them to think creatively and use the framework method to brainstorm viable growth strategies.

“Use your creativity to stand out,” said Caligiuri.

The workshop allowed participants to think critically and look behind the surface of “what” type of marketing to use and instead pay more attention to the “how” behind it.

“It’s not just understanding what to do, but it’s also about executing it.”

The meeting ended with lighthearted closing remarks from Caligiuri and community announcements from Ron Cantiveros. He reminded MFBC members and guests to save the date for the Filipino Journal Golf Tournament on Wednesday, August 7 at Bel Acres Golf & Country Club. Fit and Fab for Sport

Two worlds collided on April 4 as local fitness models rocked the

fashion show showcased local talent and raised close to $3000 for Kidsport Winnipeg. The Filipino community was well represented with local Filipina bikini competitors Dairess Beron and Joan Presto (also part of the organizing committee), as well as DJ Ill Jay 2 (Jhorick Lavador) laying down the tracks for the show. For a first time event it was a smashing success and plans for making it an annual fundraiser for Kidsport are already underway. Jones vs Silva Super Fight: Next Logical step

With 27 seconds left in the first round, the referee stepped in and called a

halt to the main event of UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen. Champion Jon “Bones” Jones kneeled over Chael Sonnen and was raining down vicious punches and elbows as the challenger covered up. Much was made about Sonnen being able to trash talk his way into a match for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship since in his last outing he lost via TKO in round two of his title fight with Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Many said Sonnen was not a worthy contender. Jones total domination

in their fight proved many of those people right. Though the champ has many tools in his arsenal, he chose to use Sonnen’s best weapon against him. Wrestling. Take downs and ground and pound. As Jones put it, he out “Sonnened” Chael Sonnen.

Worthy challenger or not, the rivalry between Sonnen and Jones contributed to the highest ratings The Ultimate Fighter has received in the last few seasons. Looking at the top of the light heavyweight rankings, you’ll find fighters who already lost to Jones. Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua, Lyoto Machida, Ryan Bader

have all tasted defeat at the hands of Jones. Dan Henderson recently lost to Machida, bringing his stock down. Now that Sonnen has been dispatched, who do you give the next title shot to? Alexander Gustafsson would be the next choice in terms of the light heavyweight division. But the match most anticipated would be as super fight between Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

Looking at Sliva’s rouges gallery in the middleweight division, undefeated challenger Chris Weidman is up next. He gets his shot at the title at UFC 162 on July 6th. Assuming Silva gets past Weidman, though that is certainly no guarantee. Who would be next in line? Yushin Okami lost his title shot, yet beat Hector Lombard. Tim Boetsch beat both Okami and Lombard, yet lost to Constantinos Philippou. Mark Munoz was beaten by Chris Weidman. Alan Belcher was close to a title shot, yet recently lost to Michael Bisping, who lost to Vitor Belfort. Of course Belfort had his title fight against Silva and lost via knock out in the first round. Strikeforce Champion Luke Rockhold could be next, but he has to get past Vitor Belfort. Constantinos Philippou could also be the next in line, but has a tall order in former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo Souza May 18 at UFC on FX 8.

All in all the middleweight division has a lot that needs to be worked out before a clear cut challenger can be announced. Whereas the light heavyweight division has been cleared out. The only real logical choice would

be a super fight. Champion vs. champion. Jon “Bones” Jones against Anderson “Spider” Silva. This would be a block buster.

An interesting note, if Chael Sonnen could have lasted those final 27 seconds in the first round, he would be the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Jones suffered a gruesome toe injury

during that first round that almost ripped it right off his foot. He was celebrating his win when Joe Rogan pointed it out, the camera zoomed in and we could see his big toe, bone exposed, just barely hanging on. Sonnen lasts the round, Jones would have forfeit due to injury, new champ. The difference 27 seconds can make.
