Pakistan-born Chicago businessman Tahawwur Rana was Thursday sentenced to 14 years in jail followed by five years of supervised release for providing support to Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Tai- ba (LeT) that staged the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Although Rana, a boyhood friend of LeT op- erative David Coleman Headley, was acquit- ted of supporting the Mumbai attacks, pros- ecutors had sought the maximum 30-year sentence for his role in the aborted plot to at- tack Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten for publishing cartoons of Prophet Muhammad. Rana’s lawyers, downplaying his role in the Danish scheme, sought a lighter sentence of no more than nine years, citing his poor health. They argued Rana was kept in the dark about much of the plot. Headley, they said, was a master manipula- tor who fooled Rana into supporting his ter- ror activities. They also said 52-year-old Rana is a “kind”, “compassionate” family man with no prior history of violence and no criminal record and so should get no more than 10 years prison time. But in new evidence submitted before the hearing, prosecutors sought to undercut the depiction of Rana as a dupe by presenting a telephone intercept of Rana’s wife, say- ing that her husband and Headley were just alike and were both immersed in Islamic ex- tremism. Headley, son of a Pakistani father and an American mother, who changed his given name of Dawood Gilani to scout targets in Mumbai without arousing suspicion, pleaded guilty in both the Mumbai and Danish terror- ism plots, and was the star prosecution wit- ness at Rana’s trial. Headley would be sentenced a week later Jan 24. A Chicago jury convicted Rana in June 2011 on charges of providing Headley cover as an employee of his immigration business to scout targets in Mumbai and the newspaper office in Copenhagen. In court filings this week, federal prosecutors described the alleged Danish plot involv- ing beheading newspaper employees and depositing their heads onto Copenhagen streets as “murder on a grand, horrific scale”. Prosecutors said Rana, who lived in Chica- go and owned a Northwest Side immigration and travel service, operated the business as a front for funnelling terrorist money over- seas. 2 CHANDIGARHSUNDAY 20 Jan 2013OPINION

Lance Armstrong had it all figured out. Ar-guably the most glamorous and accom-plished sportsman of the decade gone by, his life symbolized the zenith of sporting achievement. A seven-time winner of the Tour De France cycling event and an in-spirational cancer survivor, Lance came to acquire a super human stature. The US anti-doping authorities had other plans, after a relentless and sustained pursuit lasting two years they pieced to-gether evidence of his complicity in scien-tific doping. The denial by Armstrong and his backers was equally vehement. His foundation Livestrong, fans and family were quick to point out the investigations as unfair and petty in character. Whatever hopes existed in innocence of Lance lay in tatters post his admission of guilt in a landmark interview with Oprah. He ad-mitted to blood doping, growth hormones usage, steroids and blood transfusions amongst other things to boost his per-formance. By his own admission he took these measures to “level the playing field with other athletes”, but in the process he forgot the cardinal principle of sports, play it fair. The concept and methodology for scien-tific doping was earlier the preserve of national sports bodies vying for a game of one upmanship in international meets. At peak during the cold war, it’s incidence was thought to have reduced owing to stronger anti-doping bodies and mea-sures. However the case of Lance Arm-strong indicates a shift away from the systemic doping to one undertaken by pri-vate bodies and individuals. Millions of his fans are heartbroken but Lance continues to be a role model, only now of what not to be, earlier he symbolized what to be!

Jaipur Chintan ShivirUPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi publicly ac-knowledged that traditional stronghold states of the party are under challenge from rival political parties. Her speech touched upon the Indo-Pak dialogue and called for setting ground rules of our engagement. She also called to prevent the disillusionment of the middle class from the government. On the face of it the speech was not a fiery address to rouse the cadres but a course correction commentary on the state of affairs. Deep within the bowels of Congress machinery there is increasing concern over the per-formance of pet initiatives of the leadership team in cabinet. The three topics that saw Mrs. Gandhi offer her comments constitute the nub of the po-litical troubles for Congress. The UPA-II be-came a reality only because of the unstinting support offered by the urban middle class, traditional vote banks and increasingly resil-ient Indian image on the global stage. UPA-II has floundered on all the three counts and has not undertaken course corrections to boot. Inflation, corruption and weak Pakistan policy have deflated the optimism shared by the nation as recently as a couple of years ago.Jaipur chintan shivir on the back of Sura-jkund baithak signifies that elections are im-minent in the view of the government and there is a growing realization that factors that led to a repeat win are not that effec-tive any more. 2004 saw an India seeking to reinvent itself by voting the alternative, 2014 may witness a similar phenomenon if the government fails to address the concerns of stakeholders.

Chautala arrests changes contours of Haryana politics The conviction and arrest of its two most senior leaders, including former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, on brib-ery charges, has changed the contours of Haryana’s politics and given some relief to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.Haryana’s main opposition Indian Na-tional Lok Dal (INLD) will find it tough to remain in political contention in the state in the absence of its party president and his elder son Ajay Chautala, arrested in the JBT (junior basic trained) teachers’ recruitment scam and convicted by a Delhi court. Chautala senior, 78, son of Haryana polit-ical strongman and former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, had been active in re-cent months in attacking the Hooda-led Congress government in the state, es-pecially on issues of corruption and law-

lessness. With their conviction in a cor-ruption case, the INLD will find it difficult to sustain this. With the father-son duo in Delhi’s Tihar Jail and awaiting punishment, the INLD, which was in election mode, will find it difficult to maintain the political credibil-ity of the party in the eyes of its support-ers and people of the state.Chautala’s younger son Abhey Chautala, who got controversially elected as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) presi-dent, has been left to lead and steer the party in the present political crisis. He has blamed the whole case on “political vendetta”.Legally speaking, Chautala, who heads the opposition in the Haryana assembly, cannot even contest the next election (under the Representation of the People

Act) until he gets the CBI court’s order re-versed by a higher court. That is not go-ing to be easy. The CBI court will pronounce the punish-ment for the conviction Jan 22.Questions are being raised in political quarters about the INLD’s ability to main-tain a momentum without the former chief minister and his elder son on the scene. The misery for the Chautala family and the INLD has put the ruling Congress and the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) in an upbeat mood. The Hooda government, which has bat-tled scams and controversies includ-ing the Robert Vadra-DLF land deal, the Gopal Kanda episode, Jat agitations for reservation, series of rapes, attacks on Dalits and rising incidents of crime, has suddenly been rejuvenated by the arrest

of the Chautalas.Hooda and his ministers came out in full strength Wednesday to pin Chautala down for his wrongdoings. The latest developments have given a lot of hope to the recent political alliance of the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).The HJC, led by former chief minister Bhajan Lal’s son Kuldip Bishnoi, is trying to project itself as the main contender to take on the Congress at a time when the INLD has hit a low. The INLD used to be a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) till four years back. But the BJP, which leads the NDA, has now joined hands with the HJC in Haryana.Chautala, his son and 53 others were convicted and arrested in the teachers’ recruitment scam Wednesday.

The big names from the corporate world gave it a miss, there were no fresh concrete business proposals, and the chief minister spent the major part of her speech attack-ing her favourite whipping boys - the central government, the media and the opposi-tion. This sums up the inaugural session of Mamata Banerjee’s investment summit that was devoid of the sound bytes that entre-preneurs and an industry-hungry state like West Bengal were waiting to hear.To top it all, the opening programme of the second edition of “Bengal Leads” in this in-dustrial-port town of East Midnapore district ended Tuesday with the rare sight of indus-trialists (Dhunseri Petrochem and Tea chair-man C K Dhanuka and RP-Sanjiv Goenka chief Sanjiv Goenka) and politicians singing in chorus a slightly modified version of an evergreen Tagore song “Jodi tomar (tor in original) daak sune keu Na ase tobe ekla cholo re” (If no one responds to your call, then go your own way alone). They also sang a popular Hindi number, before con-cluding with the national anthem.

The opposition, however, was quick to seize on the song to take a dig at the chief min-ister. “She had put up so many of her pic-tures, posters, made lavish arrangements. But nobody turned up. While she kept on calling the investors at the inauguration, nobody was there. In the end, she had to sing in chorus Ekla cholo re”, quipped Sur-jya Kanta Mishra of the Communist Party of India-Marxist in Kolkata. The absence of the country’s leading in-dustrialists and heads of prominent busi-ness chambers looked all the more glar-ing as Banerjee’s investment meet comes close on the heels of its Gujarat counterpart “Vibrant Gujarat” that saw the presence of all the big players from the industrial world as well as a clutch of potential foreign in-vestors. Having roped in the likes of Ratan Tata, Ambani brothers Mukesh and Anil, Adi Godrej, as also a virtual Who’s Who from the business community, it was easy for the western state’s chief minister Narendra Modi to showcase his province.Banerjee did hand out land allotment let-

ters to 12 industrial units and clearances for using land in excess of the Land Ceiling Act to 27 companies. But it paled into insig-nificance compared to the Rs 65,000 crore worth concrete investment proposals which marked “Vibrant Gujarat”.The West Bengal chief minister sought in-vestment not only in heavy industries and information and technology, but also in the infrastructure sector - roads, education, health and transport - mostly in the public-private-partnership model. She informed the industrialists that there were plans to set up cold storages and agricultural mar-kets in all the blocks, and polytechnic col-leges in each sub-division, and land has been identified for 44 industrial clusters across the state. The chief minister also asked the corporates to take her e-mail id and mail her directly in case they had problems. “I will personally do the needful to solve the problem”.Though she reiterated her government’s hands-off policy on land acquisition that leaves it to the individual entrepreneurs

to acquire land for their projects, Baner-jee promised to give all clearances within a seven days to projects once they are through with getting the land. But she spent most of her time in attack-ing the central government for not giving a three-year moratorium to her debt-ridden government for paying the interest on cen-tral government loans. “We did not take the loans. These were left for us by the former Left Front regime. We are not asking for any undue advantage. We are only asking for debt restructuring,” Banerjee bemoaned.Assailing the opposition CPI-M, she said for 34 years, the Left front (led by the CPI-M) had “finished” the industrial prospects of the state, which had to cope with regular shutdowns. road blockades and strikes.“Some media groups based in Bengal sing paeans about Gujarat. They’ve been con-stantly comparing our state with Gujarat and doing negative publicity... “They (me-dia) don’t love us. They don’t want us as I am not from a family with a golden spoon,” she said.

Master of lies and denialsWe have not yet forgotten that the Pakistan did not recognize their soldiers in disguise who

got killed in the Kargil episode or the denial that ‘Ajmal Kasab’ was a Pakistani National

and now the latest that the Pakistani army committed a barbaric act on an Indian soldier.

Every time they probably forget that they can never defeat India in a war. It is not a cricket

match. The Indian army is stung and the sting is deep enough to bring out the strongest

reactions. At a time when there own government is in dire states and the Prime minister

is accused of corruption, the religious bodies are up in arms against the government, they

should better set their own house in order. The statements given by the ministers have

only added substance to their lies. It is high time that we as a nation should despise their

designs and device means and methods to shut them once and for all. We are self reliant

enough that we can do anything without any links with a dangerously untrue neighbour .

We are a secular nation which was born at the same time but with our efforts we are what

we are today. We as a country have all the capabilities to ward of any intrusions whatsoever

and it is appreciable that our worthy general minced no words when he said “ we reserve

our right to retaliate “ Well said sir , we are proud of our forces .

In a cabinet meeting presided over by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, it was de-cided to partially decontrol pricing of diesel, giving the state-run oil marketing companies to “make small corrections in pricing from time-to-time”. In a related decision on India’s petroleum sector, it was also decided to raise the annu-al allocation of subsidised cooking gas from six to nine cylinders per household. The government had earlier limited the num-ber of subsidised cylinders to six per annum. State-run transport fuel retailers have been allowed to revise diesel prices marginally and periodically without prior government consent. The decisions on diesel and cooking gas take immediate effect, officials said. “Oil marketing companies have been given the freedom to make small correc-tions from time-to-time,” Finance Minister P.Chidambaram said, even as officials said the oil marketing companies could revise prices by an amount less than Rs.1 per litre at one go. The move comes nearly three years after petrol prices were similarly freed in June 2010 and ahead of the Congress Party’s in-trospection meeting (Chintan Shivir) and the annual session in Jaipur, Jan 17-19, 2012.

A day after the government allowed state-run companies to raise diesel prices peri-odically, the price of diesel was Friday hiked by 45 paise per litre excluding state levies, whereas petrol price was cut on an average by 25 paise per litre. The decision to raise diesel price came late Thursday night and is applicable from mid-night Jan 17, 2013. The oil marketing companies (OMCs) were able to hike the price of the transport sensi-tive fuel after the Cabinet Committee on Po-litical Affairs (CCPA) at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday gave the nod for a partial deregu-lation of the fuel.In the national capital, diesel price stood at Rs.47.65 per litre from Rs.47.15 per li-tre a day ago. In Mumbai, the price stood at Rs.53.71, in Kolkata at Rs.51.51 and in Chennai at Rs.50.68 per litre respectively.Meanwhile, petrol price in New Delhi, stood at Rs.67.26 per litre, in Mumbai, the price was Rs.74.00, in Kolkata Rs.74.72 and in Chennai at Rs.70.26 per litre.Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Veer-appa Moily Thursday said the cabinet in a meeting decided to allow the OMCs to fix their own diesel prices. The move is expect-ed to lessen the government’s subsidies bill and rein in the fiscal deficit.

DMK president M. Karunanidhi Friday con-demned the central government decision to allow oil marketing companies to hike fuel prices by 50 paise per month and said it would hit the poor and middle classes.“Even allowing the oil companies to hike the diesel prices to a small extent is a wrong de-cision,” Karunanidhi whose party is a major constituent of the central government, said in a statement issued here. He said the hike in diesel prices would have a cascading effect on the prices of other products with the poor and middle classes unable to bear the additional burden.Urging New Delhi to reconsider its decision, he said only in September had the price of diesel been hiked by Rs.5.63 per litre.Referring to the recommendation of a par-liamentary committee to increase the num-ber of subsidised rate cooking gas cylinders to 12 per year, Karunanidhi said the central government should bear the burden and provide one cylinder per month at a subsi-dised rate.

A benchmark index for Indian equities mar-kets hit a fresh two-year high rising less than half a percent Friday, a day after the govern-ment authorised state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) to raise diesel prices.

There was healthy buying for the second consecutive day in oil and gas and public sector undertakings (PSUs), which includes all three state-owned OMCs.The BSE Sensex, which opened at 20,038.67

points, closed at 20,039.04 points -- up 75.01 points or 0.38 percent from its previ-ous close at 19,964.03 points. The Sensex touched an intra-day high of 20,126.55 points and a low of 1,9990.62 points. The midcap index was up 30.76 points, while the smallcap index was higher by 9.05 points. The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed 25.20 points or 0.42 percent up at 6,064.40 points. Major indices like oil and gas and public sector undertakings (PSU) were the main gainers Friday, with oil and gas index being higher by 287.24 points, followed by PSU index, up 211.63 points, and power index, up 28.37 points. The scrips of the three OMCs -- Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petro-leum rallied. Indian oil went up 10.46 per-cent in the day’s trade at Rs.348.95, while that of Bharat Petroleum gained 9.64 per-cent at Rs.434.05. Hindustan Petroleum rose 4.99 percent at Rs.362.85.Among the losers, the automobile index

was down 83.28 points, while the metal in-dex fell 65.73 points. The consumer dura-bles index ended 45.49 points lower.

But other political parties notably the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Trinamool Congress and the Left parties, did not take kindly to the move saying, that the diesel prices had a bearing on the overall in-flation of most commodities. Reacting on the government’s decision BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar termed it “atrocious” saying it would have a “cascad-ing” effect on the prices of other commodi-ties. “First they raised rail fares and now diesel. This is atrocious,” Javadekar said. “Diesel goes into the prices of all essential commodities. Whether it is food grains, veg-etables, fruits, diesel becomes a component when price escalation takes place,” West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra said. Petroleum ministry officials said the move was necessitated by the fact that oil mar-keting companies had accumulated losses worth Rs.52,711 crore from April-Septem-ber, 2012 (Rs.9.60 per litre in the present scenario by selling diesel at below cost). The OMCs had incurred under recoveries of about Rs.81,192 crore for the 2011-12 and Rs.34,706 crore in 2010-11. The last time diesel prices were hiked was in September 2012, when it was increased by Rs.5.63 a litre, the sharpest ever rise.

According to ministry officials, OMCs could revise prices by an amount less than Rs.1 per litre at one go.The move comes nearly three years after petrol prices were similarly freed in June 2010. Ministry officials said the move to deregulate diesel prices was necessitated by the fact that oil marketing companies had accumu-lated losses of Rs.52,711 crore from April-September, 2012 (Rs.9.60 per litre in the present scenario by selling diesel at below cost). The OMCs had incurred under-recoveries of about Rs.81,192 crore for the 2011-12 and Rs.34,706 crore in 2010-11.Diesel prices were last hiked in September 2012, when it was increased by Rs.5.63 a litre, the sharpest ever rise. The hike in diesel prices is expected to affect a wide gamut of transportation ranging from locomotives to heavy duty trucks.Meanwhile the scrips of the three OMCs -- Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum -- rallied at the Bombay Stock Ex-change (BSE). Indian Oil scrip grew by 11.11 percent in intra-day trade at Rs.351.00, while that of Bharat Petroleum increased by 9.56 percent at Rs.433.75 and Hindustan Petroleum, up 8.81 percent at Rs.376.05.

Demand for separate statehood to Greater Hyderabad

DharamsalaThough living in exile in India for over half a century, the longing to see their homeland has not waned among the Tibetan residents in this north Indian hill town.“I still desire to set foot on the soil I left long back,” said Lamtso, an octogenarian woman living here since the 1960s.Lamtso has been living in the quaint town with the snow-clad Dhauladhar ranges in the backdrop along with her family since Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama arrived here in the early 1960s after fleeing the Chinese army crackdown in Tibet.“I was born in a small village in northeastern Tibet. I miss the vast grasslands, the snowy mountains and my pastoral community,” an emotional Lamtso told IANS at the Tsug-lagkhang Temple in McLeodganj, above Dharamsala, where she is a regular at morn-ing prayers.McLeodganj is the headquarters of the Ti-betian government-in-exile. Over 100,000 Tibetans have been living in exile in India.Another octogenarian, Dechen, who quit Ti-bet in the early 1960s, told IANS: “Before I die, I want to return to my first home.”She said through an interpreter: “Every ex-iled Tibetan has hopes of returning to the homeland one day. I owe my gratitude to In-dia, where I have lived most of my adult life.”With fond memories of her homeland, the 86-year-old has raised a new generation in exile and wants it too to return to Tibet.“We have struggled to enable our children and grandchildren get the best education in India. Now they have to return to serve their own people,” she said. However, the Tibetans born and brought up in India are more hopeful than the older gen-eration.“Tibetans in Tibet must see the ray of free-dom sooner rather than later. The rising number of self-immolation incidents (in Ti-bet) shows the extent of their suffering,” said Lobsang Wangyal, producer-director of the popular Miss Tibet beauty pageant.“The fiery protests show that Tibetans would rather die than live under such unbearable circumstances,” he told IANS.For Lobsang Sangay, the first democrati-cally elected prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, returning to a home he has never seen is his dream.

New DelhiAn estimated 61 percent of Indian firms suf-fer above 10 percent shortfall in production due to power cuts, industry lobby FICCI said here. The finding emerged from a survey by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Com-merce and Industry and Bureau of Research on Industry and Economic Fundamentals (BRIEF), titled “Lack Of Affordable and Qual-ity Power: Shackling India’s Growth Story”.The survey, done over the last three months, covered 650 large, medium and small indus-tries in 20 states across the coun-try. Only three per-cent of the total sample were government-run units and two percent multinationals. The study found no segment of industry pan-India safe from the negative impact of power losses and outages.Overall, 32 percent of industrial units across India face power shortage of over 10 hours a week. Thirteen percent of firms suffer two-five percent shortfall in production, 12 per-cent suffer 6-10 percent and only 14 percent, mainly in Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharash-tra, suffer less than two percent production

ChennaiTamil Nadu celebrated the harvest festival Pongal with thanks being offered to the sun, rain and farm animals on the first day of Tamil month Thai.Across the state, people rose early, wore new clothes and offered special prayers at temples. At homes, children beating a small drum shouted ‘Pongolo Pongal’ when milk started boiling over at the auspicious time. The ritu-al is part of preparing Chakarai Pongal, the special dish cooked as part of festivities. When the milk boils over, other ingredients - rice, jaggery, Bengal gram - are added to the milk and finally ghee-fried cashews, al-monds and cardamom. The vessel in which the dish is cooked -- a mud pot in earlier days and stainless steel pots now -- is decorated with ginger, turmer-ic, a piece of sugarcane and banana tied at the neck.Pongal festivities take place over four days, the first day being Bhogi, which was Sun-day, when people burn old clothes, mats and other items, and homes are painted afresh to mark a new beginning. The second day is the main Pongal festi-val, celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month Thai. The third day is Mattu Pongal when bulls and cows are bathed and their horns painted and worshipped as they play an important role in farms. Women feed birds with coloured rice and pray for the welfare of their brothers. In some parts of the state, jallikattu - a bull-taming sport, also seen as a celebration of masculinity, though banned these days over concerns about the rights of animals - is held. The fourth day is the Kannum Pongal - the day to go out and meet relatives and friends.

production short-fall as compared to electricity intensive sectors like iron and steel and aluminium. The survey found that Maharashtra, which, like Gujarat, has a mix of both IT and manufactur-

ing companies, does not suffer as acutely by power shortages as some of the other states. Among the survey’s recommendations for providing affordable and quality power to industrial consumers are increasing capac-ity of installed sources, implementing smart grids, operationalising open access for con-sumers, thus allowing them to choose their distributors .The FICCI-BRIEF report also recommends stricter laws and penalties for theft and un-sanctioned use of electricity.

ChandigarhUnion Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said it was not possible to assign women constables in all the 51,000 train coaches in the country amid rising concerns for their safety in public transport.Talking to media here after flagging off a new Shatabdi Express train between Chandigarh and New Delhi, Bansal said: “It would not be possible to provide women constables in

each of the 51,000 coaches that the Indian Railways runs.”“Steps have been taken to sensitise the male constabulary regarding this very im-portant aspect (of women safety) and also to ensure that no male passenger boards the compartments reserved exclusively for ladies. Wherever possible we shall also be deploying women constables in the trains,” Bansal said.Justifying the recently announced hike in railway fares, Bansal said that the major share of the Rs.1,200-crore additional rev-enue which is likely to be collected by March 31, 2013, would be spent on the security and safety of the trains.“A part of this revenue would be spent for a special cleanliness drive under which 100 railway stations, including Chandigarh, have been shortlisted,” he said.Chandigarh, which has a population of over one million, is 250 km from the national capi-tal.There has been demands of stepping up security in public transport due to rising incidents of crime against women, includ-ing the Dec 16 Delhi gang-rape in which a 23-year-old para-medical student was bru-tally assaulted in a moving bus, who later succumbed to her injuries, sparking a na-tionwide outrage.

“This is our dream, aspiration and struggle,” Sangay told IANS.The 43-year-old took over the reins of the government-in-exile in August 2011 from 74-year-old monk and scholar Samdhong Rinpoche, who held the post for 10 years but was overshadowed by the Dalai Lama. With the Dalai Lama stepping down from diplomacy and politics, the prime minister’s post has acquired added stature.“After the spiritual leader handed over the reins of government to the elected leader-ship, everybody was apprehensive about the Tibetan movement being carried forward without the Dalai Lama at the helm.“But now, we are proud to say that with his blessing, the Tibetan movement is as strong as it ever was,” he said.Acknowledging the hard work of the elder generation, he said the foundation of the Ti-betan movement is very strong.“It has sent a clear message to the Chinese who were wrongly thinking that the move-ment will die a slow death after the Dalai Lama,” he said. For a peaceful resolution of the Tibetan is-sue, Sangay is treading the Dalai Lama’s middle path policy that seeks genuine au-tonomy within China.“Democracy and non-violence are two key principles we will never compromise,” he said. But he also believes in dialogue. “We are willing to negotiate with China anytime, any-where.”Even the Dalai Lama, who escaped from Tibet in 1959, pins his hopes on returning home.“I remain optimistic that I will be able to return to Tibet. China is in the process of changing. Besides, I’m not seeking separation from China,” he wrote on his website.

New DelhiRashtrapati Bhavan, the imposing presidential palace spread over 130 hectares in the heart of this capital city, has become a more accessible place for tourists and common people of India. Pranab Mukherjee, who became the 13th President of India on July 25th last year, said his mission was to make the place as “open as possible to people, including children.”All one needs to do is to log on to the internet and make an advance booking for any of the three days it is open to the public every week-end.Previously, one had to physically go to Rashtrapati Bhavan to make

The grand British-style decor and the furniture have been spruced up in a mega restoration drive to bring Rashtrapati Bhavan back to its original glory. The main library is the focus of the restoration drive. Nearly 24,000 books and manu-scripts are in queue for digitisation - 4,000 having been archived dur-ing the tenure of president A.P.J Abdul Kalam.President Mukherjee is taking per-sonal interest in bringing a sem-blance of order to the library. “Dr Kalam had initiated many good projects and created infrastruc-ture. I am ensuring that they are utilised. The Rashtrapati Bhavan auditorium which he inaugurated in 2007 is being used regularly,” Mukherjee said while interacting with the media. The decision to build the 340-room mansion - the erstwhile residence of the British viceroy - was taken in 1911 when the British decided to shift their capital from Kolkata to New Delhi. Designed by Edward Landseer Lutyens, it took 17 years to build the abode at a cost then of Rs. 1.28 crore (nearly 13 million rupees).

We have thrown open new galleries and the front entrance of Rashtrapati Bhavan. The sale of souvenirs at the memento shop has increased, along with brisk sale of tea at a kiosk we have set up on the premises to cater to the visitors.”For the media on Tuesday, it was a landmark tour. “For the first time, the media has been allowed inside Rash-trapati Bhavan other than the desig-nated areas,” the official said. KolkataSankaracharya of Puri Swa-mi Nischalananda Saraswati blamed the government for its weak image in dealing with killing of two Indian soldiers by Pakistan army and dubbed western influence as a factor for increasing rape incidents.Replying to queries from media persons, the Sankaracharya termed as “barbaric” the killing and mutilation of the two sol-diers near the Line of Control.“It is against all human values. It is barbaric,” the religious leader said here. However he said Pakistan “can do such acts without having to think even twice as the image of the Indian government and the country was weak in tack-ling incidents of this nature”.The Sankarcharya also said increasing western influence manifested in the profusion of high-society club culture, in films and the in take of drugs had overshadowed traditional principles and old values. He said western influences had gone up post-independence. “When we were not indepen-dent, we nursed our values and cultures. But in the last 65 years, there has been a great erosion of values and princi-ples. We have to change this”.Referring to the Delhi gang-rape, he said: “Such incidents take place when the thin line of value system is overshot in the ruse of development”.

KolkataLeft trade unions Thursday came down heavily on the United Pro-gressive Alliance government’s decision allowing state-run oil marketing companies to revise diesel prices, saying the step would lead to high inflation.“The central governmment’s deci-sion will have dangerous conse-quences. It will heighten inflation,” All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Guru-das Dasgupta said here.Terming the step as the “biggest anti-people decision” of the UPA government, he said: “In a few days, diesel prices will be up by Rs.5 to Rs.6. There will also be a spiralling effect on food inflation”.Tapan Sen, general secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist-affiliated Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), said the deci-sion will add fresh fuel to the fire of inflation.Public transport and goods trans-port will be dearer “and the centre is actually trying to do away with the public transport system”.In a reformist move, the central government Thursday allowed state-run transport fuel retailers to revise diesel prices marginally and periodically without prior gov-ernment consent.

Cam GlamInteresting career: Career Counsellor

What happens when a young student is unable to decide a course of career for himself? He may be interested in different fields but may not be sure as to what is his true calling. At such times, the need for a career counsellor arises. The primary job of a career counsellor is to assess the intelligence level, IQ, EQ, likes and dislikes of a student and then suggest the best career option for him. Also, counsellors can organise workshops at schools and colleges to help the students in taking the most important decision of their lives. The Fine Print:A counsellor has to have good knowledge of psychology because his primary job is to understand the psyche of the student.Counsellors conduct psychometric tests to determine the IQ of the student. In depth talks and discussions with the students and their parents to understand the background, the mindset and overall personality of the student are necessary.Counsellors may have to counsel students in case they are bent on a certain choice which is not very lucrative. What to Do:It is very important to have a sound base of Psychology to become a Counsellor because it is the first duty of a counsellor to understand the student’s mind. So one should take up humanities in class 11 and study Psychology as a subject extensively. Graduation in Psychology

By Madhusree ChatterjeeLiterature, clashing cultures and global performance genres merge quaintly on the Indian stage, riding on legendary 16th century playwright William Shakespeare’s works at the National School of Drama’s annual theatre fest here. The fortnight-long 15th edition of the Bharat Rangmahotsav will end today. The annual showcase of the country’s premier drama school turned its spotlight on “inter-cultural Shakespeare” this time, with a cache of six productions from across the world. These are a Hindi version of “Twelfth Night”; “The Tempest”; a Bengali “Macbeth”; a retelling of “Othello” in Malayalam; “Julius Ceaser” in Assamese by Guwahati’s Seagull Theatre group etc,.Theatre critics said the festival reflected the globalization of a trend that began nearly 300 years ago in India when the British rulers brought Shakespeare’s plays to these shores to entertain the “white crew” of the erstwhile East India Company. Today, Shakespeare has become part of the Indian heritage. His works now spawn cross-cultural innovations. “Yamadoothu - After the death of Othello” - a bilingual adaptation of Othello in Malayalam and Hindi by B. Abhimanyu dramatises the 30 minutes between the death of the body and the death of mind. The play runs for 73 minutes. “Before making the performance text, we had a clear cut idea about death - and the difference between body death and mind death. It gives us a certain language to perform. All things appear dreamy,” Thrissur-based Abhimanyu told IANS.

The young director has used spiritual symbols like flowers, milk, blood and corn stalk to sow the seeds of doubt in Othello’s mind in a stylised theatrical language. Explaining one possible reason why Shakespeare

may be easily adapted across the world, Paddy Haytor, founder of French repertory company Footsbarn Theatre, said: “It is believed that most of Shakespeare’s plays were collated into a compendium of texts after his death as a result of which the texts were improvised many times.” Last year, London’s Globe Theatre had commissioned Mumbai-based The Company Theatre to produce “Piya Bahuroopiya”, an Indian adaptation of “Twelfth Night” for the “Globe to Globe Shakespeare” festival to coincide with the London Olympics.“It renders itself to any language. But we were meant to stay with the rules of Shakespeare when we staged the play. But it has changed after we moved out of the Globe Theatre. We have restructured on the floor, allowing it to grow organically,” director Atul Kumar told IANS. “We read the original Shakespeare and threw it out of the window. We all knew what the essentials of the play were - and then we started exploring the play in our way,” Kumar said. Numerous adapations have appeared on stage in the last 100 years.James Shapiro, a well-known Shakespeare scholar from the US says: “Shakespeare is the only playwright in the English-speaking world whom no one has to pay for staging plays. Shakespeare is for everybody....”.

Hyderabad literary fest begins

PETA to push its cause at Goa fest

HyderabadThe third edition of the Hyderabad Liter-ary Festival (HLF) began here Friday with the participation of over 100 writers, artists, scholars, publishers from India and abroad. The three-day multilingual event being held at Moulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) will focus on writing in Indian lan-guages. There will be conver-sation with authors, reading, panel dis-cussions, workshops, book launches, cul-tural programmes and events for college and school students.Panel discussions on topics like translation as recovery, writings about Hyderabad, and endangered lan-guages and cultural traditions will be held.Anita Nair, Amita Desai, Sekhar Kammula, Shankar Melkote and Nukhban Langah are amongst the literary figures attending the festival.France is the invited guest nation at the event with participation of French writers and cul-tural artists. It will feature Indo-French col-laborative work.Telugu will be Indian language in focus with eminent Telugu writers addressing special sessions. Starting this edition, HLF will focus on one Indian language every year.Inaugurating the festival, Andhra Pradesh

Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan hoped that it would help re-ignite the reading habit. He noted that the literature has lost some of its sheen due to complete shift in reading and writing habits because of technological advancements.“We don’t even write letters these days as we simply send messages through our mo-

bile phones. This is one of the per-ils of technology. While we have to move forward with times, we should not forget our tra-ditions and cul-ture,” he said. The governor also regretted that stu-dents were con-

centrating on optional subjects while ignor-ing the languages. Even students who opt for foreign languag-es, do so only to score marks rather than learning them, he said. While underlining the need for more power-ful writers, Narasimhan cautioned that emo-tions should not overtake reasoning.Well-known poet and Jnanapith awardee Sitakant Mahapatra delivered the key-note address. MAANU Vice-Chancellor Mohammed Miyan and Chandana Khan, secretary, tourism and culture, government of Andhra Pradesh also spoke

Panaji Farhan Akhtar’s six-pack abs, his dimpled smile and his crooning may not be the only things to be discussed at Indiafest 2013, one of the biggest pan-India inter-collegiate fes-tivals, set to begin Friday at Goa’s popular Baga beach.Animal rights activists claim that the two-day festival in which 50,000 college students are expected to participate would be the ideal place to pitch for the ethical treatment of ani-mals. “Nokia Indiafest is the perfect place to get young people involved in one of the most critical issues of our time: Animal rights,” says Neha Singh, youth outreach advisor with People for the Ethical Treatment of Ani-mals (PETA). PETA would also hold numerous contests and even dispense literature on a number of topical animal rights issues. Signatures would be collected for petitions to be sent to the central government on the rights of ani-mals, Neha Singh said. Two petitions to be circulated at the festival relate to the demand for a ban on cosmetics that use animal parts, and the prevention of

testing of household products on animals. Currently, the union ministry of health and family welfare is already weighing its options on the issue. PETA hopes that some vigor-ous lobbying will help tilt the scales in favour of animals. “The second petition urges the government to pass an updated draft of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, which includes a substantial increase in fines as well as possible imprisonment for convicted abus-ers,” Singh said, adding that current fines of Rs.10 to Rs.50 have remained unchanged for over half a century, and the sums are too miniscule to have any deterrent value.“Once people learn about the benefits of go-ing vegan, about what happens to animals in laboratories and of the importance of sterilis-ing dogs and cats, they are much more like-ly to help alleviate animal suffering,” Singh said. Among the top bands and musicians set to perform at the fest are: Jalebee Cartel, Ra-ghu Dixit Project, Sha’air and Funk. Farhan Akhtar, who will be crooning live after a gap of two years, is likely to be the festival’s big-gest crowd-puller.

What are your views about the beheading of the Indian Soldier on the LOC ?Vageesha Bahel,

UCNS

Gurpreet SinghWhatever has happened is very unfortunate. The fact that the Paki-stani Army has retained the head of an Indian soldier is very degrad-ing. In our culture, it is believed that unless the whole body is cremated the soul does not attain satisfac-tion. As such, keeping a part of the slain soldier’s body is not only gory but also outrageous.

Kamal Jeet SinghThe whole country is outraged by the action at the LOC. The govern-ment must take strict action. All peace talks with Pakistan should be called off. The Pakistan gov-ernment has to realize that such a thing is just not acceptable. How dare they do this to our brave sol-diers?

Bhawandeep SekhonVery sad and degrading incident has taken place at the LOC. How can the Pakistani army break the rules of the cease fire? It is shame-ful on their part. Does this mean that they want war? Or is it just the whimsical action of a few soldiers? In both cases it cannot be denied that Pakistan is at fault and needs to be punished.

Satwinder Kaur The entire country wants to take re-venge on the Pakistan army but do we realize that an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind. If we go about doing exactly what they did, it will result in a war like situation. It will result in useless kill-ings of many soldiers on both sides and who knows how much both countries will have to suffer.

Paras GambhirThe action of Pakistani army is very wrong indeed. They have en-tered Indian boundary and killed our soldiers. Are they crazy? Have they no respect for peace treaties? How can they go about killing our soldiers brutally? And why is the Pakistani government so silent? All these questions have left me baf-fled.

Sudhir MehraI find it impractical that the Pakistani army has kept the head of an In-dian soldier. Are we living in an age where barbarism is so dominant? Do the Indian authorities have no power? Can they not even obtain the slain soldier’s head? Why are the authorities adopting so mea-sured and so weak a stance?

New DelhiThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched a mobile application ‘Indian-Weather’ for android based smart phones and tabs to provide latest weather informa-tion to users. The service was launched by Science and Technology Minister S. Jaipal Reddy on IMD’s 138th Foundation Day.The application can be freely downloaded through google play available on the home screen of android-based smart phones and tabs.“I would urge IMD to make further efforts for more precise prediction, particularly for se-vere weather phenomenon. We should also provide location and user specific forecast in different time scales,” he said.Speaking about the application, Rahul Saxe-na, an IMD scientist in charge of the project, said: “IMD wants to tap the reach of smart phones to provide the latest weather infor-mation and other value added services.”The location specific weather forecast would be available to the public at the touch of an icon. With this service, IMD’s forecast of ma-jor cities of the country around four metros for next four days along with updated current weather observations would be available to the millions of mobile users across the coun-try in the initial phase.“During next 8-10 months, we intend not only to expand the domain of the products by including weather bulletins and alerts for significant events, agromet advisories and weather related health updates to the pub-lic on the smart phones but also for other phones across platforms,” he said.

LondonA headband with built-in earphones could lull you to deep sleep, without even waking a partner sleeping by your side.Existing versions are wired with a phone, but a wireless version, slated to go on sale in April, has just won a prestigious award at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.“Being able to sleep soundly is crucial to feel-ing well overall, and SleepPhones help by playing relaxing audio, drowning out noise, and establishing a positive bedtime routine,” says Wei-Shin Lai, one of the inventors of the headphones. The firm began selling the product in 2007, when Lai was working as a doctor.“In 2007, I had trouble falling back to sleep after patient phone calls late at night as a family doctor. My husband suggested that I listen to something to take my mind off of patient concerns,” says Lai, the Daily Mail reports.“Since I didn’t want to disturb my husband while he slept, I needed headphones or ear buds I could wear in bed. But there was noth-ing comfortable in the market so I came up with stuffing speakers inside a headband,” adds Lai.“There’s a version of our product for sports, a version for sleep, and now a wireless ver-sion that eliminates cords entirely by playing back media from any Bluetooth-enabled de-vice,” concludes Lai.

WashingtonSocial media giant Facebook has unveiled a new tool -- Graph Search -- to enable users in conducting targeted searches for people, places, photos and interests on the site.“You should theoretically be able to ask Facebook ‘Who are my friends who live in San Francisco?’ and Graph Search should be able to return an answer to you,” Face-book founder Mark Zuckerberg told report-ers.Facebook’s Graph Search photo component is the first of its kind for the California- based tech company.“Photos will be surfaced based on the query, and then based on the number of likes and comments,” said Lars Rasmussen, Face-book’s director of engineering. “For exam-ple, you can look up photos of friends taken in Paris, or even photos of friends taken in national parks,” he said. And using natural language search terms such as “friends who like college football”, Graph Search is also able to comb through the billions of “Likes” to curate results, a tool that advertisers might find useful, experts said.“You can only search for content that has been shared with you,” Zuckerberg said, adding that a message will appear on users’ Newsfeeds to remind them to review their privacy settings before the product begins to roll out this week.

LondonA new graphene-based device can pinpoint the presence of the tiniest amounts of per-formance enhancing drugs and steroids, rapidly and accurately, in athletes’ blood samples.Graphene, isolated for the first time by Man-chester scientists in 2004, lies at the heart of the new device. It has the potential to revo-lutionise diverse applications from smart-phones and ultra-fast broadband to drug delivery and computer chips. The breakthrough can see one molecule though a simple optical system and can analyse its components within minutes, or even detect infectious viruses. This involves plasmonics - the study of vibrations of elec-trons in different materials, the journal Na-ture Materials reports.Scientists from the Universities of Manches-ter and Aix-Marseille (France), who are be-hind the breakthrough, said the device could also be used at airports or sensitive loca-tions to prevent concealment of explosives by terrorists or traffickers from smuggling drugs.Researchers, lead by Sasha Grigorenko from the Manchester School of Physics and Astronomy, suggested a new type of sens-ing devices, which show extremely high response to an attachment of just one rela-tively small molecule.Grigorenko said: “The whole idea of this de-vice is to see single molecules, and really see them, under a simple optical system, say a microscope.

WashingtonNASA scientists have ruled out the possi-bility of asteroid Apophis hitting the earth in 2036, based on information obtained by its telescopes in 2011 and 2012 and other new data.Data discovered during a search of old as-tronomical images provided additional in-formation required to rule out the 2029 im-pact scenario, but a remote possibility of one in 2036 remained, according to a Na-tional Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) statement.Discovered in 2004, the asteroid - as big as three-and-a-half soccer fields - caught the immediate attention of space scientists and the media when initial calculations of its orbit indicated a 2.7 percent possibility of an earth impact during a close flyby in 2029.“With new data provided by the Magdalena Ridge (New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology) and the Pan-STARRS (Univer-sity of Hawaii) optical observatories along with very recent data from the Goldstone Solar System Radar, we have effectively ruled out the possibility of an earth impact by Apophis in 2036,” said Don Yeomans, man-ager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program

Office at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasade-na, California.“The impact odds as they stand now are less than one in a million, which makes us com-fortable saying we can effectively rule out an earth impact in 2036. The project is to be completed by May 31, 2013.Popovkin previously said the country’s planned manned spacecraft capable of flights to the moon will not fly until 2018.Russia’s space programme suffered a slew of setbacks in recent years, most of them blamed on faulty hardware. The most recent mishap took place last De-cember, when a botched launch of the Ya-mal-402 telecoms satellite led to the deple-tion of its fuel supply, shortening its orbit lifetime. In November 2011, Russia launched the Phobos-Grunt probe, its most ambitious planetary mission in decades, designed to bring back rock and soil samples from the Martian moon Phobos. However, the probe got stuck in Earth’s orbit after its engines failed to put it on course for the Red Planet. The doomed probe crashed in the Pacific Ocean last January after two months in orbit. The setbacks resulted in a reshuffle at the Federal Space Agency in 2011.Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who oversees defence and space industries, an-nounced late last year a switch to a holding-based model for the industry, which he said would be implemented by March.

AgartalaAhead of assembly elections in Tripura, the Congress received a jolt with 32 tribal lead-ers quitting Wednesday and fielding their own candidates. The party’s tribal department chairman Phani Bhusan Bhowmik and general sec-retary Debabrata Koloi were among the 32 who sent their resignations to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The dissident tribal Congress leaders have fielded candidates in 21 assembly seg-ments, including 18 seats reserved for trib-als.Last week, Congress general secretary Os-car Fernandes announced the nomination of 48 candidates for the state’s 60-member as-sembly. Eleven seats were allocated to long-time ally INPT.Of the 60 seats in Tripura, 20 are reserved for tribals and 10 for Dalits. Of the 30 re-served seats, the Congress-INPT alliance had won only one seat in 2008.Meanwhile, Congress leaders and workers in 15 places in Tripura continued their revolt demanding changes in nominations for as-sembly elections.Tripura Congress president Sudip Roy Bar-man said the nominations would not be changed.Meanwhile, despite the bickering between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress in West Bengal, the former will support the latter in the ensuing elections.“We will not field candidates against the Congress. We don’t want to split the non-Left votes,” Trinamool Congress state chair-man Arun Chandra Bhowmik told IANS.Tripura, the country’s lone Left-ruled state, is set for polling Feb 14. Meghalaya and Naga-land will go to the polls Feb 23. Results in all three states will be announced Feb 28.The assemblies in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland have 60 seats each.

It leads to natural sympathy for him. I have close relations with him. I am also pained to read this news,” he said. He, however, said the favoritism in jobs by the political leaders was on the rise and the common man had lost faith in the political system.Hailing the judiciary and appreciating the witnesses for taking the case to its logical conclusion, he said: “The decision may have come after a delay but has come rightly.”The INLD chief and his son Ajay are Hary-ana legislators. multiple injuries, including a lumber bone fracture. The attack caused a political up-roar, with the civil society expressing con-cern over the law and order situation. The disturbances stretched to Jan 8 when a number of political activists were injured in firing and clashes between the Trinamool and CPI-M.Governor M.K. Narayanan had said: “This is not a good political culture. I think some sort of goondaism is going on here.” The CPI-M called Islam’s arrest belated while Trinamool activists took out a protest rally.CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat, who called on Mollah at the hospital Thurs-day, demanded that the law should take its full course to ensure justice.“We have been demanding for nearly two weeks that those responsible for the attack on Mollah should be arrested. Today one of the main persons has been arrested. This is only the first step, a beginning,” he said.“We want the law to take its full course. Jus-tice should be done. We will see if it (the ar-rest) is being followed up,” he said.Former CPI-M MP Sujon Chakraborty, now secretary of the party’s South 24 Parganas district, said the government should have taken action against Islam earlier. “We had to fight. All over the state people were disturbed. But if Arabul is released af-ter two-three days, then we have to say this is only an eyewash,” he said.Congress leader O.P. Mishra welcomed the police action but hoped the arrest was “gen-uine and not a mere eyewash”.Enraged after the arrest, Trinamool activ-ists hit the streets at Bhangor in the district where shops downed shutters. Additional police forces were rushed to prevent vio-lence.

SrinagarThe shrinking space for non-violent resis-tance risks youths to take to violence to re-solve political disputes, JKLF chief Muham-mad Yasin Malik said.Addressing the media here, Malik said: “In 2008 the youths (in the Kashmir Valley) took a conscious and collective decision in favour of transition from a violent to a non-violent one.“In spite of this, 72 non-violent protesters were killed in 2008 and 124 in 2010.“The youth is now faced with the dilemma whether the decision favouring non-violent transition was the right one. There is a risk that they (youth) might resort to violence in the future,” he said. The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader said friendship between India and Pakistan had always been punctuated by tensions. “We are not against business and other types of relations between the two countries, but unless the root cause is addressed, the tensions will continue.”Malik said the JKLF had announced the ceasefire in 1994 after assurances from the US and the Indian civil society that a space would be provided to non-violent struggle.“Instead of providing us a space, we are now receiving sentences from courts handing down life imprisonment and death penalties to freedom fighters,” he said.Malik quoted the example of a resident of south Kashmir’s Tral town who is undergo-ing life sentence with two others because two rifles were seized from them. Malik said he will stage a peaceful sit-in in New Delhi as part of the JKLF campaign against life imprisonment and death sen-tences to people engaged in the separatist struggle.

March in Kolkata to protest veteran theatre personality’s harassment KolkataTheatre personalities and intellectuals held a rally in the city in protest against alleged harassment of veteran theatre director Benu Chattopadhay for purport-edly using the pet slogan of the ruling Trinamool Congress- ‘Ma, Mati Manush’, in a play.Several intellectuals including Chatto-

padhyay himself and actor Badshah Moi-tra walked along in protest.“I and my team were harassed by Trin-amool Congress supporters for using the words ‘Ma, Maati in my play. The play has been enacted several times before and it has nothing to do with the Trinamool’s Slogan of Ma Maati Manush (Mother, land, people),” said Chattopadhyay dur-

ing the protest march.“With each passing day the growing in-tolerance of the government is coming to the fore. Has the Trinamool got a copy-right on ‘Maa Mati Manush? On what ground could they harass a veteran like Chattopadhyay,” Moitra said. The dialogues appear in the play “Setu-bandhan”, written by Ajitesh Bandopad-

hyay and directed by Chattopadhyay which was staged earlier this week at the Assam Bangla Natya Utsav at Nripen-dranarayan Institute in Dinahata in Cooch Behar district.Afterwards, several Trinamool supporters threatened and harassed Chattopadhyay and his team compelling him to apolo-gise.

Set in the backdrop of GB Road (Delhi’s red light district) this is a book on Delhi’s red light area. Mayank Austen Soofi, author of the popular The Delhi Walla blog and HT col-umnist has written a mesmerizing, readable book after his three-year-long research to get an insight to the life of sex workers who live and work in the brothels of the Indian capital’s well-known GB Road. Prostitution” is a word from which every person is famil-iar. We just imagine a bold woman with a lot of makeup, wearing sexy attire and waiting for her customer at the corner of the street. We always see the bold and glamorous role of prostitutes in our Hindi cinema but there is a dark and steamy side as well. The whole story revolves around Sushma who is expected in her late forties. Sushma is among many women, men and children living and working in brothel number 300 on Garstin Bastion Road, known as “G.B. Road,” These prostitutes are being sold to brothel owners as young women, and charge 100 to 200 rupees for sex. But Soofi

Author of four alternative guide-books to Delhi, Mayank Austen Soofi spends his time in book-shops and by lanes, observ-ing every corner of the city. He is best known for his website and blog, “The Delhi Walla” in which he details Delhi’s lives and love. The author tells the reason behind the creation of this inspiring tale “I wrote this book because I wanted to un-derstand the world of GB Road, to make a sense of it and that

could have done only by writing about it. That’s how the book en-tered this world. I initially found GB Road very mysterious. It’s such an extraordinary place, but each time I’m in Brothel no. 300, everything seems so ordinary. The fact that you make money by pretending to make love to men- as a person growing up in a middle-class household, it is such a strange thing to me, but here to most women I met, it is just work.”

Makers of highly popular derisive love tale ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’, writer-lyricist Luv Ranjan is back with a movie that is a com-pletely opposite. ‘Akaash Vani’ is a passion-ate love story, and its album reflects the same spirit. Composer Hitesh Sonik and Luv Ranjan have worked together on this al-bum comprising of five original tracks.. People may remember Hitesh sonic performance at MTV Unplugged this season which was pretty good.Let’s take a look at the music of this movie.• Pad gaye ji : Starting off with a typi-cally melodious track ‘Pad gaye ji’ which is sung well by Sunidhi Chauhan and K.K . While the lyrics are modern, this slow rock composition adds to the romance and dra-ma of the track. Suni-dhi Chauhan’s magical and peaceful voice takes the song to a new level .The Combina-tion of various sounds give the album an ad-dictive opener and over all it is was a good hear• Crazy lover : Crazy Lover sung by Vishal Dadlani and Sunidhi Chauhan is addictive, and still it’s not what you call come n go .Both of them add their energy to this crazy track with usual but modern tune. This song is a treat to the ears and makes turmoil of

earsplitting happening on dancing floors. Vishal Dadlani rocks this track with some of the most insane lyrics• Bas main aur tu : Bas Mein aur Tu sung by Nikhil D’Souza has a fair slow gloomy melo-

dy in it. Due to its high romantic share it will make you sit back, close your eyes and enjoy this dreamy tune. This dreamy romantic song with pleasant lyrics and Nikhil D’souza’s flaw-less voice is a must download. It comes in reprise version too. • Rumani : Rumani sung by Shalmali Kholgade and Thom-san Andrews is a naughty, fun-loving mockery track based on the leads – Akaash & Vani. Smart music arrangement com-bined with good sing-ing makes it a feel good, foot tapping number. Overall this track sounds mushy,

young and full of love.• Tera mera naam : A nice tune sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali is a journey through heartbreak in the 21st century. he sounds beautifully restrained and the lyrics are soft enough. All those suffering from heartbreak should be careful of this one.Overall ‘Akaash Vani’ presents a mixture of love songs with fresh voices. All I Say is Go for It.

Cast: Arjun Rampal, Chitrangada Singh, Deepti NavalDirector: Sudhir MishraMusic: Shantanu MoitraGenre: Romance,Crime

Expectations of audience are usually high when it comes to watching a Sudhir Mishra film. The talented filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, man behind some extremely glorified films from ’Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ , ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ to the enjoyable ‘Cham-eli’ proves his determination, yet again with ‘Inkaar’ but it comes nowhere close to his other films. Inkaar deals with the theme of sexual harassment at work in the most re-alistic way. But inside the film is also a love story spoiled by corporate ambitions. And the two plots are so effortlessly incorporated in the film that you kind of lose interest and also the main subject in its larger picture.SynopsisRahul Verma (Arjun Rampal) and Maya Lu-thra (Chitrangada Singh) work at an adver-tising agency. Things take a dramatic turn when Maya files a case of sexual harass-ment against her boss, Rahul. The commit-tee needs to look into the complaint and find out the truth. Social activist Mrs. Kamdar (Dipti Naval) is introduced in to study the case as Rahul and Maya give accounts of their mutual association over the years, jus-tifying their individual point. Is Rahul Verma really guilty of sexual harassment? Or is it ambitious Maya Luthra imagining things for

her ease? The film starts directly from the sexual ha-rassment case and goes in flashback to express the story behind it .Thereby the audience is only aware about the case as the judge understands it through her image. The film is shot in a consciousness mode with the camera moving swiftly from the conference room to the memory of the pro-tagonists. At times, a single

scene is played on the screen no. of time to denote the differences in the perspective of the ones describing it.Analysis:Mishra gives a witty ironic shade to the marketing agency backdrop of the film. The length could be a drawback, especially since the central conflict takes a little too long to surface. Among his top most performances in movies like Rock On and Rajneeti. Ra-hul Varma played by Arjun, comes across as sensitive, arrogant and sexist. he has played the big shot ad world honcho pret-ty well with a bit of a secrecy .Chitrangda Singh not only looks ravishing like always, she has justified her substantial role with a convincing act. She’s naturally gorgeous and Maya benefits from it. But strangely, there is very less of Maya’s personal life, a lot more of Rahul’s background with his aggressive father (Kanwaljeet). A mention of the supporting cast is imperative. It was good to see Deepti Naval in a mainstream commercial film after ages. Both good look-ing actors have commendable performance and sizzling chemistry. You definitely won’t ignore this movie packed with stellar perfor-mances. But yes the hasty end may ruin the climax of the movie. Final Verdict: After creating cinematic bril-liance like ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ and ‘Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin’, Inkaar on a whole doesn’t leave a long lasting impact.

finds their unconventional lives interesting in some way. These women are normal like us; they laugh, cook, pray and even fall in love.Soofi gives readers a glance about the life-style of the sex workers who are trapped in this swamp and dreams of escaping this hell. But in the end, deep in their hearts, they all are aware of this fact “. Once you get into this evil world, there is no easy escape”.Apart from Soofi’s conversation with the ladies and owners, what is significant about the book is the fact that the author has taken into note all those who play a major part in shaping the character of the sex-workers. Some of them even feel ashamed of what their moth-ers and aunts do, and hope for a life away from the humiliating world of brothels. Lastly Soofi’s simple language and representation of the life of brothels has depicted the story of these ordinary lives extraordinary. The readers may experience slight difficulty in finding this book in any bookstore. But you can easily order it online for just 300 bucks if you want to explore the unusual life of sex workers.

Pakistan-born Canadian cleric Tahirul Qadri, who shook the Pakistan government with his three-day siege of the capital demand-ing dissolution of parliament, left for Lahore after signing an agreement with the govern-ment on the timing of the general elections. He left behind thousands of cheering sup-porters who congratulated him for a suc-cessful anti-corruption campaign, a media report said Friday.Qadri, the Tehrik Minhaj-ul-Quran (TMQ) leader, was protesting in the capital since Tuesday having begun his ‘long march’ from Lahore Sunday, Geo News reported. Addressing the participants of the sit-in, fol-

The Uttar Pradesh capital may be hundreds of miles away from Islamabad but the two cities have a connect of sorts in the fiery cleric Tahirul Qadri. The 61-year-old former professor of interna-tional constitutional law does not only trace his ancestral roots to Lucknow but also vis-ited the city in March last year. That is when he interacted with old-timers and visited many an educational institution. His father had studied in Lucknow in 1929 and had lived here for more than a decade. His father studied at the Tibia College and at the King George’s Medical College. Qadri is now rallying thousands in the Paki-stani capital demanding the ouster of the government. While in Lucknow, Qadri freely interacted with veterans of the old city and visited many places like the Farangi Mahal, Nakkhas, Chowk and Jhawai Tola where his father is believed to have stayed.Qadri’s visit to Lucknow was part of his four-week Indian tour. He met several eminent Muslim scholars of Lucknow and underlined that terrorism has no place in Islam. Imam Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Ma-hali, the Imam of Aishbagh Idgah, whose house Qadri visited, told IANS that the cleric was clear about two things: Islam never had anything to do with terrorism and, secondly, that India and Pakistan should cut their mili-tary budgets and instead spend it on public welfare.“We were mighty impressed by his peace overtures. But more than that we are happy that the Qadri saheb was very clear that Is-lam and terror were two separate things and Islam never allowed killings of innocent peo-ple,” Khalid Rashid said.

Indian Army chief General Bikram Singh Friday visited the family of Lance Naik Sud-hakar Singh, who was brutally killed by Paki-stani troops in Jammu and Kashmir Jan 8, and assured them of financial help besides a job to a family member.Regarding the situation in the Line of Control (Loc), he said “things are under control.”“The family will get a sum of Rs.42 lakh and other facilities. I have also handed over to soldier’s father a letter of employment to any member in the family. They are part of our extended family and we will take care of them,” he said. The army chief visited the soldier’s village in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh along with

senior army commanders. He also appealed to media not to politicise the killing of Indian soldiers.About situation on the Line of Control (LoC), Gen. Singh said: “Things are under control on LoC and Indian Army is very profession-al. We are handling it in a befitting manner.”He denied answering a question on foreign level talks sought by Pakistan, saying it is being dealt at political level.Gen. Singh Wednesday visited the house of Lance Naik Hemraj, who was decapitated by Pakistani troops. He has called the killing of both soldiers a “gruesome and an unpardonable act”.

Remembering him as one who relished the Avadhi cuisine and loved talking endlessly on the “similarities” between Pakistan and India, he says it was heartening to note that Qadri was still talking peace -- and become the rallying point of change in neighbouring Pakistan. The cleric, the Imam said, was “fikarmand” (worried) about developments in Pakistan and was particularly critical of the funda-mental forces which had wrongly interpreted Islam for their own gains. “He was worried about the fluid situation in Pakistan and was yearning for a change,” the Imam added.

The United States has said it favours a di-alogue between India and Pakistan as the “right way” to resolve tensions over the kill-ing of two Indian soldiers along the Line of Control in Kashmir.“We favour dialogue between India and Pakistan on this issue in any and all chan-nels that both governments consider ap-propriate,” State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters Wednesday in response to a question.“That’s the right way to work through this,” she added.Nuland said US was concerned about the

violence along the LoC, but was encouraged that the two countries had recommitted to a dialogue to calm the situation.“We are concerned about the spate of vio-lence along the Line of Control,” she said. “We are encouraged, though, that senior levels in the Indian and Pakistani Govern-ment have been talking directly about how to calm the situation and how to address the concerns.” “We were happy, just in the last 24 hours, to see both governments recommit to dialogue as the right way forward on this, and that’s what we support,”Nuland said.

lowing the signature of Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf on what was termed as the ‘Islamabad Long March Declaration’, Qadri said: “The march that started Sunday and continued till today had become a great model for the world to see.” The agreement could be reached after a 10-member committee, formed by Ashraf and headed by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), held negotiations with Tahirul Qa-dri to end the sit-in.According to the declaration, the National Assembly shall be dissolved at any time be-fore March 16, 2013 (due date), so that elec-tions may take place within 90 days. One month will be given for scrutiny of nomina-tion papers for the purpose of pre-clearance of the candidates under article 62 and 63 of the constitution. It was also agreed upon that the focus will be on the enforcement of electoral reforms prior to the upcoming general elections. According to sources, Qadri came down from his bulletproof cabin following an agreement with the government late Thursday, climbed into his his sleek black SUV and headed to-wards Lahore leaving thousands of his fol-lowers behind celebrating the “victory”.“I congratulate you. Today is the day of vic-tory for the people of Pakistan. You should go home as peacefully as you came here,” Qadri told participants after signing the deal with the prime minister.Qadri’s supporters danced and cheered in a carnival-style atmosphere despite the chilly winter night, before packing their bags, col-lecting their mattresses and blankets and getting into their vehicles.

US favours India-Pakistan dialogue to calm LoC

“What do we see today. We see three incidents across the LoC. We see war-mongering which puts the last 60 years actively back into our memory. War-mongering coming in from the other side of the border which is, I thought, the thing of yesteryears, thing that we had put behind us,”Hina Rabbani Khar

Fear has gripped village council members across the Kashmir Valley in the wake of the killing of one and a murderous attack on an-other elected village representative in Jam-mu and Kashmir. The army has now started night patrolling in areas where militants are believed to operate.“The night patrolling is meant to dominate such areas and give a sense of security to the panches and sarpanches,” a senior po-lice officer said.Director General of Police Ashok Prasad said the government was even considering providing security cover to elected village representatives in specific cases. The attacks come at a time when relations between India and Pakistan have been strained since the Jan 6 killing of a Pakistani soldier allegedly in firing by Indian troops. Two days later, Pakistani soldiers brutally killed two Indian soldiers, beheading one of them, near the Line of Control (LoC).After the panchayat elections in 2011, which were held in the state after a gap of 30 years, the elected village council members have been receiving threats through posters and statements from militants, asking them to resign from their posts.Last year, Syed Salahuddin, chief of militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, said that as long as India continues to project elections as proof of the people’s participation in democ-racy in the state, militants will target the vil-lage council members. He later retracted his statement. The intelligence agencies, both state and

central, believe the recent ceasefire viola-tions by Pakistan troops on the LoC is di-rectly related to the targeting of panchayat members by the militants in the hinterland.“After all, both the (Pakistan) army and the militants have the same masters across the LoC,” said a senior intelligence official here. This perhaps is the reason that only after two successive attacks on village council members in north Kashmir’s Sopore sub-division widespread panic triggered among them across the Valley.Over 50 village representatives have so far publicly announced their resignations, dis-playing their identity cards before the media in Srinagar. The panches and sarpanches say that unless militants announce that they have pardoned them it might not be possible for them to return to their villages.More than 38,000 village council members were elected in 2011 and providing security to each one of them is not administratively possible for the National Conference-Con-gress coalition government headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The recent attacks on a sarpanch and a panch in Sopore forced Abdullah to rush to Srinagar from Jammu, where he discussed the law and order scenario with top officers of the army, paramilitary, state police and state and central intelligence agencies. In a nutshell, for thousands of those living close to the LoC and the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, and also those living in the hinterland, war and peace on the LoC has a direct bearing on their lives.

The CPI-M Thursday urged the Indian gov-ernment not to call off the peace process with Pakistan despite the brutal killing of two Indian soldiers. But it underlined that India “should take a firm stand and convey to the Pakistan au-thorities that such attacks are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated”.At the same time, New Delhi must “ensure that the dialogue process with Pakistan con-tinues”. “There should be no curbs on the people to people relations being developed between the two countries,” the party said in a state-ment after the first day’s meeting of its Cen-tral Committee.

The CPI-M voiced “deep concern” over the rising tensions on the Line of Control (LoC), which divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan. The party denounced the Jan 8 killing of two Indian soldiers and the beheading of one of them. The party said the 2003 ceasefire adopt-ed on the LoC “had served the purpose of maintaining a relatively peaceful border all these years and the deterioration of the situ-ation should be checked”. “For this, high level talks should be held with the government of Pakistan to ensure that such violations of the ceasefire do not recur.”

Welcoming the “positive statements” coming from Pakistan for talks to de-escalate ten-sions along the border, External Affairs Min-ister Salman Khurshid Friday said the recent incidents won’t affect the peace process be-tween the two countries.“There is a positive content in the statement that has come from Pakistan foreign minis-ter and high commissioner to India. It is wel-come and it should be getting an appropri-ate response from our side,” Khurshid told reporters here.He said the matter will come up for discus-sion at the three-day Congress Chintan Shi-vir here. “Peace process is not going to be under-

mined by these incidents. We hope that we will find a resolution to all these matters and we have treated the whole issue with great care and the closest attention possible,” Khurshid said.“Peace process is something in which we have invested a lot...and it was done be-cause it is strategically and tactically impor-tant for India’s role in the world,” he said.On the talks offer by Pakistan, Khurshid said: “We are trying to work on it and the prime minister has been trying to ensure things remain in control and our concerns are ad-dressed and situation doesn’t deteriorate. All these things have to be kept in mind.”Khurshid had Thursday declined to commit himself to accepting Pakistan Foreign Min-ister Hina Rabbani Khar’s offer for bilateral talks, saying that India cannot move forward for talks just on the basis of “one statement”.Ties between the two neighbours have been strained ever since the Jan 6 killing of a Pakistani soldier allegedly in firing by Indian troops. Two days later, Pakistani soldiers brutally killed two Indian soldiers, including behead-ing one of them, near the LoC.

BeijingDespite their border row, India and China are “looking to deepen mutual trust” and the bilateral relationship, a Chinese daily said.China Daily also quoted a Chinese military leader as saying that Beijing was “commit-ted to promoting the strategic partnership... with India”.The daily referred to the meeting this week in Beijing between Indian Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma and Xu Qiliang, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commis-sion.It quoted Xu as saying that China attached great importance to developing military ties with India and hoped to increase mutual strategic trust. It added that State Councillor Dai Bingguo had delivered a letter from new Communist Party chief Xi Jinping to Indian Prime Minis-ter Manmohan Singh, stating that India and China could grow together.“China’s latest interpretation of Sino-Indian ties, which is full of goodwill, has drawn much media attention in India,” the daily said.It added: “All these are positive signals that the two neighbours are now looking to deep-en mutual trust and the bilateral relationship,

United NationsIndia has contributed one million dollars to the core voluntary budget of UN Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women) for the 2012-13 financial year.India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Hardeep Singh Puri, handed over a cheque for the amount to Dr Michele Bache-let, Under Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Women. This contribution constitutes the third instal-ment of India’s multi-year pledge to provide five million dollars as core predictable fund-ing to UN Women’s resources, and takes its existing contribution to $ 3 million to UN Women, so far, according to a media release from India’s UN mission. On this occasion, Puri also reaffirmed India’s steadfast commitment to the goals of gen-der equality, the empowerment of women and gender mainstreaming enshrined in the mandate of UN Women.India is one of the founding members of the executive board of the UN Women, and is presently serving on the UN Women Execu-tive Board.

United NationsRussia has launched three Cosmos series military-purpose satellites, the Aerospace Defense Forces said.A Rokot launch vehicle carrying the satel-lites successfully lifted off from the Plesetsk Space Centre in northern Russia, marking the first space launch in 2013.“The Rokot carrier rocket with three military satellites was successfully launched at 8.25 p.m. Moscow time,” spokesman Col. Alexei Zolotukhin said. The blastoff had initially been scheduled for Dec 8, but was postponed due to malfunc-tions in the Briz-KM booster. The light-class Rokot launch vehicle is a modified version of the Russian RS-18 (SS-19 Stiletto) intercontinental ballistic missile. It uses the two original lower stages of the ICBM, in conjunction with an upper-stage block containing the Breeze-KM booster and space-bound payloads.According to the Russian defence ministry, a total of 16 Rokot launches have been car-ried out from the Plesetsk site since the first launch May 16, 2000.However, Rokot launches have been sus-pended for about 18 months after the ve-hicle failed to put the Geo-IK-2 military satel-lite into the designated orbit Feb 1, 2011.In the first launch of Rokot in more than a year, a rocket with a Cosmos class military satellite and three civilian satellites on board blasted off July 28, 2012.

LondonBreastfeeding wallops ovarian cancer into submission, slashing the mother’s risk of the disease by nearly two-thirds, says a finding.Ovarian cancer is known as the ‘silent killer’ because symptoms for many sufferers, such as feeling bloated, are non-specific and re-mains undiagnosed until the fairly advanced stages.Australian researchers conducted a study in-volving 493 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer and compared them with 472 healthy volunteers of similar age. Each was asked how many children they had and for how long they breastfed each one, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports. The results showed those who breastfed a child for at least 13 months were 63 percent less likely to develop a tumour than those who did so for less than seven months, ac-cording to the Daily Mail.Mothers who had three children and breast-fed for a total of 31 months or more were found to cut their chances of ovarian tu-mours by 91 percent. This was compared to those feeding naturally for a total of under 10 months.More than 6,000 patients in the UK are di-agnosed with ovarian cancer annually, and the illness accounts for about five per cent of cancer deaths in women.Breastfeeding is thought to help as it delays ovulation, when eggs are released and the ovaries are exposed to high levels of oestro-gen-rich fluid. Some researchers believe a higher number of ovulations raises the risk of mutant cells forming, which can trigger the disease.

LondonAt least two people were killed and as many injured when a helicopter crashed into a crane on top of a building in London. The helicopter crashed into rush-hour traffic after bursting into flames when it smashed into the crane. The London Fire Brigade said it had received multiple calls of the disaster in Vauxhall. The chopper hit the structure by the St. George Wharf Tower development in Vaux-hall, an inner city area, at 8 a.m. Then it turned into a “fireball” and “spiralled into the ground”, said onlookers. According to London radio station LBC, the driver of the crane was late for work - other-wise he would have been in the crane at the time of the crash. Two people died at the scene and two had been taken to hospital, said Metropolitan Police. A pall of smoke could be seen near the Thames river at the scene, which is close to the MI6 building and an under construction new American embassy.Government sources, however, said the crash “has nothing to do with nearby MI6”.Reports say there was one person in the helicopter - believed to be an Augusta 109 - and that cars were damaged on the road. Other cars were seen on fire.

LondonA powerful blast rocked Afghan capital Ka-bul leaving over a dozen people dead and injured, cited witnesses.“I have seen four people dead and at least eight others injured lying on the ground,” a witness at the site who declined to be identi-fied said. A Xinhua reporter at the blast site also saw at least five dead bodies and several injured who were taken to hospital. The blast occurred close to a compound of intelligence agency and the interior ministry building. The bomb targeted a government depart-ment in Kabul’s New City, a crowded busi-ness centre, an official said requesting ano-nymity. Interior Ministry’s spokesperson Sediq Sediqi confirmed the incident but said it was too early to provide details. In a separate incident, a Taliban commander was killed in the country’s Uruzgan province as security forces raided a militant hideout, an official said. The commander’s death is a major setback to the Taliban militants, a police spokesper-son said, adding that the militant was active in Chora district and adjoin areas. The prov-ince is 370 km from capital city of Kabul. “Acting upon intelligence report, the secu-rity forces stormed a house in Chora district where commander Mullah Zainullah was present and killed him on the spot,” spokes-person Farid Ayel said.

WashingtonThe White House has downplayed media speculations that chemical weapons had been used by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime against the Syrian rebels.According to a recent report in the Foreign Policy magazine, a secret American inves-tigation revealed that Assad forces used a poisonous gas against the rebels in Homs city Dec 23, 2012.“The reporting we have seen from media sources regarding alleged chemical weap-ons incidents in Syria has not been consis-tent with what we believe to be true about the Syrian chemical weapons programme,” White House National Security Council spokesperson Tommy Vietor said in a state-ment.The official reiterated, though, that Assad’s government would be still held responsible for any potential chemical attack against the Syrian opposition forces or failure to ensure security of its stockpile of chemical weap-ons.“If the Assad regime makes the tragic mis-take of using chemical weapons, or fails to meet its obligation to secure them, the re-gime will be held accountable,” Vietor said. The CIA says Syria has had a chemical weapons program “for years and that the weapons can be delivered by aircraft, bal-listic missile, and artillery rockets”. At least 60,000 people have been killed in Syria’s conflict since March 2011, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has said, citing new analysis released by the UN early January.

which will contribute to regional peace and development.“As two big countries with a rising clout in global and regional platforms, how Beijing and New Delhi interact with each other al-ways attracts wide attention.“Some in the world arena tend to deem the two most populous countries in the world as potential rivals.“Their unsettled border issue, skirmishes over trade and lack of mutual understanding keep each other apart from time to time,” it said.It said the past 10 years had seen the bilat-eral trade volume rise from about $3 billion to $80 billion. China is now India’s biggest trading partner, while India is China’s big-gest trading partner in South Asia. The two countries are working to increase bilateral trade to $100 billion in 2015.“Obviously, cooperation in trade has be-come the cornerstone of Sino-Indian ties,” the China Daily said. “Beijing and New Delhi have every reason to continue to build on the current desirable momentum, as it will help deepen mutual trust and lay a solid foundation for solving other thorny issues between them.”

WashingtonThe US Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta, has pledged to “take all necessary steps” to rescue American hostages taken by ter-rorists who took over a natural gas plant in Algeria.“I want to assure the American people that the United States will take all necessary and proper steps that are required to deal with this situation,” Panetta was quoted by the American Forces Press Service as telling the US reporters travelling with him on his current visit to Rome. The US defense chief arrived in Rome on a six-day trip to Europe to visit defense coun-terparts and troops. He said the US strongly condemns these kinds of terrorist acts. “It is a very serious matter when Americans are taken hostage, along with others.”Panetta said he did not know how many Americans were being held by the terrorists, but noted that the US and British authorities -- the natural gas complex is partly owned by British Petroleum -- are in close consultation with their Algerian counterparts to learn as much as possible. Panetta said he was not sure whether there was a link between the terrorist attack in Algeria and the French military operation in Mali, where France launched air strikes against militants that he identified as af-filiated with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).Stating that he had spoken with European government and defense leaders in Portu-gal, Spain and Italy about the situation in Mali, Panetta said: “I believe that there is a consensus that France took the right step here to ... deter AQIM from taking even fur-ther action there.”He noted that European defense ministers would hold a meeting to discuss ongoing as-sistance in Mali.

The cities of Kirkuk and Tuz-Khurmato are part of disputed areas claimed both by the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan and Baghdad central government.Three policemen were killed in Baghdad in the early morning hours, when gunmen at-tacked their vehicle in al-Shaab district. In a separate incident, unidentified gunmen broke into a house in al-Washash district in

western Bagh-dad and shot dead two wom-en.Meanwhile, six soldiers and five civilians were wounded in three road-side bomb ex-plosions in and near Baghdad during the day.A roadside bomb went off near a convoy of vehicles car-

State District Judge Vanessa Velasquez agreed that Landeros, 22, charged with graf-fiti and criminal mischief felonies in the June 13 vandalism, posed a flight risk, according to The Dallas Morning News.He was reportedly seen on a museum sur-veillance camera last June spray-painting Pablo Picasso’s 1929 “Woman in a Red Armchair” in a room at the Menil Collection art musem and then running off. The act was also captured by a bystander with a smart-phone camera and later posted on YouTube. The Menil, the museum which owns Picas-so’s “Woman in a Red Armchair”, said the painting is “priceless”.

They are not at all vulgar. I have not done any lovemaking scenes before this. But here the script demanded it and I did it,” Neil told IANS in an interview.Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, “David” is an action thriller featuring Neil, Vinay Virmani and southern actor Vikram in prominent roles. The part featuring Neil has been shot in in black and white.“When Bejoy told me that the scenes will be in black and white, I really wanted to be a part of it,” he said.Neil made his Bollywood debut with “Johnny Gaddaar” in 2007. He was lat-er seen in films like “Aa Dekhen Zara”, “Jail” and “Lafangey Parindey”. Most of his films didn’t garner the expected suc-cess but the actor has no regrets. “All my films are interesting. Whether they are successful on box office is not in my hands. I don’t think they are bad films. The films have been interesting and I am happy about it,” said Neil.Meanwhile, the actor has a busy year with films like “3G”, “Ishqeria” and “Short-cut Romeo”, in his kitty.

Los AngelesActress Katie Holmes is apparently plan-ning to make her comeback on the small screen. The 34-year-old’s decision to work on TV came after her Broadway play “Dead Ac-counts” closed early due to poor ticket sales, repoorts showbizspy.com.According to American tabloid the Na-tional Enquirer, the actress has told her representatives that she wants her own series based in New York, so that she can be close to her daughter Suri, who is enrolled in a private school in the city.“She’s huddling with TV honchos and mulling several projects, including a de-tective show,” said a source.

Los AngelesKylie Minogue is a supportive girlfriend, says the singer’s boyfriend Andres Velencoso.Velencoso admits Minogue is always by his side in whatever he wants to pursue.Valencoso, who is stepping into the field of acting after being a model believes it is important for both partners to be sup-portive to each other in a relationship.“She’s a pro. We support each other. That’s just one of the things you do when someone’s part of our life. You’re sup-porting of everything,” Hello magazine quoted Velencoso as saying.

ChennaiTamil lyricist Madhan Karky credits Os-car-winning music composer A.R. Rah-man for his love for music.“I fell in love with music because of Rahman’s compositions that I’ve been hearing over the years. He is the kind of composer who supersedes his own work with every new soundtrack. Pen-ning songs for him is always a delightful experience,” Karky told reporters here.He was speaking at the promotional event of “Kadal”, written, produced and directed by Mani Ratnam. Rahman has composed the music for the film.Madhan, who has written two songs in “Kadal”, said that the best part about working with Ratnam is “I was given the freedom by Mani sir to be creative with my lyrics”. Talking about one of the songs he penned, Karky said: “I’m very happy that ‘Elay Keechaan’ is a runaway hit. The song brings forth the celebration of fish-ermen after a big catch”.Coming out Feb 1, “Kadal” stars new-comers Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair in the lead. Other cast members include Arvind Swamy, Arjun, Lakshmi Manchu and Thambi Ramaiah. The film’s cinematography is by Rajiv Menon and editing my Sreekar Prasad.

MumbaiCanada-based adult movie star Sunny Leone has been roped in for her first ac-tion movie “Tina And Lolo”.Ready to go on the floors in May, the movie will have rustic action with no trace of “Charlie’s Angels”, clarifies the film’s director.Devang Dholakia, the film’s director who earlier tried to make his mark with “3 Nights 4 Days”, told IANS: “Sunny really liked the script, and once she is done with her prior commitments, she will be on board. It’s an action film and the rest of the star cast shall be decided soon.“It’s a complete rustic action film. It will be in-your-face. It will not be ‘Charlie’s Angels’ kind of an action. We will start rolling from May 2013 and Sunny will have to do some training before starting the film.”After watching Sunny in erotic thriller “Jism 2”, Dholakia was keen to work with her but in a movie that portrays the ac-tress in a different light.“I saw ‘Jism 2’ and I really liked her work in the film but I didn’t want to cast her in a typical Sunny Leone kind of a film. I thought it would be fun to do something different,” he said.

MumbaiLegendary singer Asha Bhosle admits being little nervous when she started shooting for her debut film “Mai”, about a woman who has been abandoned by her only son, with veteran actor Anupam Kher.“I was nervous while shooting with Anu-pam Kher but then he made me feel comfortable. Everyone was co-operating with me,” she told reporters at a promo-tional event of the film. After facing the camera, the 79-year-old concludes that both singing and acting are challenging in their own ways.“I think singing is difficult, as one has to be expressive through their voice and at the same time be in tune. But at the same time acting is also difficult as ac-tors have to do physical tasks and emote properly,” she said.Directed by Mahesh Kodiyal, “Mai” shows the dilemma of a woman who is abandoned by her children. Her sister, Lata Mangeshkar, hasn’t seen the film as yet, but Asha said that she is “happy that I have acted in the film and wishes me luck”.

MumbaiBollywood’s blockbuster star Salman Khan loves his once a year brush with the small screen thanks to reality show “Bigg Boss”, but taking up a fiction show seems to cumbersome to him. Neverthe-less, he admits that TV is a bigger me-dium than films.“Television is too much of hard work. Re-ality shows are about one season, but when you do a serial you are (can be) stuck in it for many years. But I should say the popularity of TV is a lot more than Bollywood,” Salman told IANS.“The kind of stuff that I want to do on television, I am already doing that,” add-ed the 47-year-old. He recently wrapped up the sixth season

of “Bigg Boss”. He has been associated with the show as its host since the past three seasons, and he is loving it! Salman admits the show has been as dicey for the host as it is for the contes-tants, who were locked inside an iso-lated house without any communication with the outside world.“It is a dicey show to do for the host himself. I ended up scolding (the con-testants) sometimes and while scolding, sometimes it became a little too much. So this is the most dicey situation be-cause (as a host), I fail to understand whether to react or not,” he said.Salman had first turned TV host for game show - “10 Ka Dum”.

Film: “Mumbai Mirror”; Cast: Sachiin Joshi, Gihani Khan, Vimla Raman, Prakash Raj, and Mahesh Manjrekar: Director: Ankush Bhatt; Rating: ***

If Chulbul Pandey in “Dabangg” was to be merged with Anant Velankar in Govind Nihalani’s “Ardh Satya”, we would probably get Abhijeet Patil in “Mumbai Mirror”.Abhijeet, played by entrepreneur-actor Sachiin Joshi, is the product of Mumbai’s underbelly. He is a cop. But he could well be on the other side of the law without skipping a beat.Like Om Puri in “Ardh Satya”, Joshi’s character in its childhood watched his sadistic father beat up his mother. Joshi grows up churlish and somewhat amoral, hating the world for what it allowed his father to do to his mother. He can’t bear to see a woman being hit. Neither can we. But we still have to.There are seeds of a gripping cop thriller in “Mumbai Mirror”. Brutal and brisk, the pace is fairly frenetic. The editor cuts the material sharply leaving little room for humbug except those awful item songs by a bar dancer (Gihani Khan), who seems to lead a dual life as a sex worker and a siren, depending on whether she’s cavorting in a beer bar for beer-bellied boors, or standing next to the city’s self-declared don Shetty (Prakash Raj). In both the roles, the debutante actress is, in one word, disastrous.Breakneck as the narration happens to be, it gives no room for the audience to understand the nature of the relationship between the sex worker and the suffering cop-hero who rescues her from being beaten up and then seems to be unsure of whether to love or hate her. The other debutant actress Vimala Raman plays a television journalist. There are some well-executed action scenes where Sachiin gets to do some exceedingly audacious stunts. In an initial stunt sequence, Sachiin’s character hurts his back and spends the rest of the movie in pain. It’s a clever restorative device, reminding us that filmy heroes can be susceptible to human failings. For those who like their heroes fatally flawed and ferociously embittered, preferably in khaki, this film has enough thrills to offer to keep one riveted for the two hours of playing-time.Sachiin, who made his debut in the espionage thriller “Azaan”, is here a cop who has to battle inner and outer demons with fists of fury. He gets ample support from an interesting cast of actors including Mahesh Manjrekar as a corrupt cop who comes to a suitably sticky end. Prakash Raj’s rowdy act is getting repetitive. Sudesh Berry as a corrupt cop with an overt ‘Bihari’ accent hams for effect. As for Aditya Pancholi, he ends up being a pale shadow of Rishi Kapoor in “Agneepath” remake.Director Ankush Bhatt has a knack for knocking off the lid of Mumbai’s underbelly. This is a world of seedy cops, cheesy middlemen, avaricious politicians, unscrupulous bar girls , bribed cops and fallen heroes. We’ve been there, done it all before. But the sting remains all the same.

Fans didn’t attended American Rapper Snoop Dogg’s concert just to listen to music but to heat up the floor. No one was spared by the energetic music of Snoop. Everyone danced to their fullest.

Small screen’s popular vamp Urvashi Dhola-kia was announced the winner of the sixth season of controversial reality show “Bigg Boss”, bagging the Rs.50 lakh award. Ce-lebrity image consultant Imam Siddique made his mark as the runner-up at the fi-nale, which saw a good dose of Bollywood.Urvashi displayed a strong winning chance ever since she entered the show. She was appreciated for her upfront and honest at-titude, was a smart player and always stood up for the right.Urvashi, best remembered as Komolika of “Kasautii Zindagii Kay”, was in tears. She is the third female winner of the show in row, after Shweta Tiwari and Juhi Parmar, who won the fourth and fifth seasons, respec-tively.The finale, hosted by “Dabangg” hero Salman Khan, had celebrities like Prabhud-heva, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor in attendance.Prabhudheva, who had directed the super-star in “Wanted”, appeared on the show with choreographer-turned-director Remo D’Souza to promote their upcoming film “ABCD: AnyBody Can Dance”. The trio shook a leg together on the music from “ABCD...”.It was high on entertainment quotient with Salman’s spicy performance on popular number “Pandeyji seeti” from his movie “Da-bangg 2”.“My personal experience is that be the way you are. You don’t need to become someone else or have a split personality. If you are ac-cepted the way you are, then it is good,” said the mother of two teenage sonsUnlike previous seasons, the sixth season of “Bigg Boss” promised to be ‘Alag che’ (different), by catering to a family audience. Though it lived up to the promise to a con-siderable extent, the show indeed saw some ugly spats between Rajev Paul and Imam, and Delnaaz and Urvashi.

You will be in mood to keep aside all work, cares and worries, and just abandon yourself to the spirit of gai-ety and joyful festivities. You have earned yourself a well deserving holiday, or a reprieve from a hard tir-ing work schedule, which has given you satisfactory results as far as your job or financial position, is con-

cerned. You will make the most of the holidays or vacations that you will take during this period and spend all your time in the company of your family, loved ones and friends

Business activities will thrive. You are at your creative height and work out plans, which will yield bet-ter profits than usual. Your rivals will be surprised and will look at you with respect. Your reputation will bring in offers of partnership, which you may accept only after you scrutinise the proposals in de-tail. Some participation in a social or community function is indicated which will bring out the unknown side of your personality and you

will gain high praise and respect for it. You may also make some useful contacts, which can be helpful in ex-panding your business activities. Household affairs will be smooth and the expected problems do not surface at all. Some visitors can be expected who will make for an enjoyable and thrilling get-together.

You will be looking forward to forthcoming festivals and holi-days for which you may have made some exciting plans. Having achieved stability in your work and career, and with comfortable financial situation, you will leave all your cares and worries behind and get into the mood to celebrate. sphere at home, combined with certain auspi-cious event coming up in the family, keep you in high spirit. Love and romance is strongly into focus and you will make it a point to include your mate or beloved in each and every activity that you will participate in. Have a great time.

You will conclude most assignments early this week in order to avail of brief respite from a rather hectic schedule. You will make exciting plans for the forthcoming holidays and include your family and friends for joyful celebrations at your home. The married and those in love will share delightful moments that they will long cherish. You are in no mood to economise on spending on your-

self or in buying expensive gifts for loved ones. Today you feel that you are in position to give presents, especially to those that have always stood by you and encouraged you in times of your emotional low. This is in no way a gesture of repaying for the support you received, which in any case was invaluable, but means to show your gratitude. You will have a very happy and joyful celebration ahead.

The week begins on a positive note with you receiving news of conclud-ing a favourable contract. This new venture assures a steady income and without much hard work on your part. This piece of news will make you happy and you will plan a joyful celebration in the family. You will be busy making arrangements for out-station guests you have invited for a get-together you have organised

at your home. Youngsters, who have been romantically involved with someone for over a long period, will now introduce their friend to their family. This is ostensibly to seek the permission of elders for their marriage in future. Your family will be rather happy at your choice of partner and also the decision that you wish to settle down.

After having worked hard and also taking care of your domestic responsibilities, you will now get into mood to take time off to just celebrate your success. Financial stability and a secured career can make it easier for you to indulge in joyful merry-making with fam-ily and friends. You will be sought by most of your acquaintances because of your positive and jo-vial outlook on life and living. And you are not going to refuse any-

one that wish to join in to participate. Of course your mate or beloved being highly possessive would love to have you exclusively for some evenings but you will manage to sneak such moments of togetherness despite being regularly in large gatherings.

In business your relationship with your partner is on the verge of a break down and sincere efforts will be required by both of you to save it in the interest of hitherto flourishing business. Your se-niors seem to be particularly relying on you for certain types of assignments for which you have developed some exper-tise. This may not find favour with your colleagues but they also know that you are able capable and devoted. Unex-pected but pleasant news from a distant place is indicated. With a steady ro-

mance, secure job and a healthy bank balance, you are feel-ing comfortable and happy. You may think of some treat with your loved one. Family atmosphere is free of tension and everybody is willing to share in the work willingly. The elders are in good health and mood to remember old times and the youngsters will listen to them with awe and respect. You will now have to be prepared for a festive occasion, which will require a fair amount of money and advance preparations.

You will be very excited about your forthcoming trip that you have planned in the company of your family and beloved. Your work and financial position is rather comfortable and you will not spare any money in mak-ing your travel and holidays memorable for times to come. Youngsters, who have been in love for sometime now and are

eligible, will make plans for getting married. Their family will be very pleased at their decision and give their blessings. Everyone in the family will be happy at the eventful that you have had and you can now dreams for even more well future ahead.

Financial growth and prosperity is assured to you during this week. The employed will learn about their forthcoming promotion and elevation to position of eminence. Your seniors holding a small get-together will celebrate this news at office. Now is the time for joyful celebrations. You will set aside all work-related cares and anxieties and indulge whole-heartedly in the festivities coming up during this

week. And you have deserved this merriment having put in lot of hard work and struggle to attain a stable position and financial security. Your family will support you in every activity and your mate or beloved will be rather proud of you. Friends and admirers will seek you out and you will graciously accept most invitations. Have a great time.

You will be in festive mood and looking forward to joyful celebra-tions in the company of family and friends. Having achieved stability in your job and business it is quite natural now to enjoy the fruits of success. Make no fresh financial commitments now and just attend to routine work. You may have to put in some extra effort to com-plete a certain assignment that got held up due to technical rea-

sons. Now with all the necessary clearance you will complete this particular assignment and retrieve the money blocked in this venture. The married will patch up their differences and have a great time during the upcoming festivities. Youngsters can look forward to exciting times with a little bit of fun and romance.

The week is replete with joyful cele-brations. You will be able to conclude most of your pending assignments and will now make plans for holidays in the company of family and friends. Financially you will feel quite secure and put in some money in savings. This is not the right time to make long term financial commitments, for there will be indications of changes in governmental policies in the near fu-ture. The employed will have a busy

period ahead, and they may have to put in extra hours in completing their current task. Family life is quite happy. The married will resolve their differences that they are able to do with the mediation from a parent or an elder in the family. Youngsters planning to travel overseas for study or training programme will be leaving this week.

You will conclude the year on a very positive and profitable note. The next few days you will be busy at home organising family get-together and re-arranging a few things for a larger social function towards the weekend. Your personal life is very much on an upward swing, and your mate or beloved will plan some exotic programme for your

much-earned indulgence. You will look back at the year gone by with gratification despite a few knocks that you may have received around the middle of this year. Seniors will plan to set out on a pilgrimage in the company of their family, which will be spiritu-ally a very enlightening experience.

KolkataHolding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responsible for investors leaving West Bengal and shifting to states like Gujarat, the CPI-M ridiculed the investors’ sum-mit being held by the regime, saying no known industrialist has turned up.Refering to the Banerjee led movement in Hooghly district’s Singur between 2006 and 2008 which forced automobile major Tata Motors to relocate their proposed small car Nano plant to Sanand in Gu-jarat, CPI-M leader Surjya Kanta Mishra said it has only benefited the western state.Banerjee, in her speech at the opening of the “Bengal Leads” summit at East Mid-napore district’s Haldia, had taken strong exception on comparison of her state with Gujarat saying the western state enjoyed geographical, demographical and finan-cial advantages over Bengal.Attacking the erstwhile Left Front regime, she said Bengal had to cope with regular shutdowns and strikes while the Bharati-ya Janata Party-governed state had no such trouble. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader took the opportunity to take a dig at her. “It is due to our chief minister that Gujarat has an additional advantage. She drove away the Nano Car factory from Singur in the state to Sanand in Gujarat. Based on the automobile factory, Gujarat has drawn lot of other companies in the sec-tor,” said Mishra, leader of the opposition in the state assembly. However, he did not agree with Banerjee keeping Gujarat ahead on the develop-mental front.“When we were in power for 34 years, we followed a development model that gave utmost priority to human development. Gujarat is behind us in some human de-velopment aspects. There is severe mal-nutrition among children in Gujarat, which also ranks higher in the global hunger in-dex,” he said.“It for our chief minister, to choose one of the two models,” he said.He also took pot shots at the government for the absence of big names at the sum-mit. “I saw the opening on television. But I did not see one leading industrialist from outside the state. The chief minister kept on calling investors. WashingtonAfter a sharp slowdown pushing down its projected growth to 5.4 percent in the fis-cal year ending March 2013, the World Bank expects India to grow at 6.4 percent this year, rising to 7.3 percent by 2015.The slowdown in India, South Asia’s larg-est economy, also weakened growth in the region to an estimated 5.4 percent in 2012 (7.4 percent in 2011), said the World Bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects, issued Tuesday.Regional GDP is projected to grow by 5.7 percent in the 2013 calendar year, and by 6.4 percent and 6.7 percent in 2014 and 2015, respectively, driven by policy reforms in India, stronger investment ac-tivity, normal agricultural production, and improvement in export demand. However, growth in the region remains vulnerable to an uncertain external en-vironment and country-specific factors, the report said suggesting a resumption of financial market tensions in the Euro Area or protracted debt uncertainty in the United States would affect the South Asia region through both trade and financial channels.“Moreover, greater volatility in interna-tional financial markets could make it dif-ficult for India to finance its widening cur-rent account deficit,” it said. These can be achieved, in particular, through sustained efforts at fiscal consoli-dation over the medium term, maintaining prudent macroeconomic policies, deep-

ening structural reforms to ease capacity constraints, and improving the business environment for the private sector. After a strong decline during the second quarter of 2012, industrial production in South Asia has stabilised and is picking up, with output rising at a 2.4 percent an-nualised pace in the three months to Oc-tober, the report said.In India, industrial production surged 8.3 percent in October 2012 from a year ear-lier and then fell 0.1 percent in November, partly due to a difference in timing of the Diwali festival across the years. On a seasonally adjusted annualised basis, India’s industrial output grew 2.1 percent in the three months to November compared with the previous quarter. The World Bank report also noted that four years after the onset of the global finan-cial crisis, the worst appears to be over, but the global economy remains fragile, as high-income countries continue to suf-fer from volatility and slow growth.Despite slow growth in high-income countries, prospects for the developing world remain solid (albeit between 1 and 2 percentage points slower than in the pre-crisis period). The World Bank estimates global GDP grew 2.3 percent in 2012. Growth is ex-pected to remain broadly unchanged at 2.4 percent growth in 2013, before gradu-ally strengthening to 3.1 percent in 2014 and 3.3 percent in 2015.

So, for me, it’s al-ways a pleasure winning all these awards.”Bolt’s 2012 awards includes the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association Golden Cleats Award, the AIPS Sportsman of the Year award and the US Sports Academy Athlete of the Year award.“One of the awards I really appreciated was the one from Argentina because I actually beat out Messi, so that was cool,” said the big Jamaican. He was referring to a 2009 poll for the best Caribbean and Latin American sportsman, which he won ahead of the popular Argen-tine footballer.

MoscowTwo time Russian Olympic gymnastics champion Evgenia Kanaeva has retired, the sport’s federation said.Kanaeva will remain one of the seven vice presidents of the federation, reports Xinhua.“Kanaeva has decided to finish her sporting career,” the All-Russian Rhythmic Gymnas-tics Federation said in a statement.Born in 1990 in a family of athletes, Kanae-va is the only rhythmic gymnast to win two Olympic gold medals. She won her first Olympic gold medal in Bei-jing 2008 in the women’s rhythmic individual all-around final while her second Olympic gold came in the 2012 London Olympics. At the 2009 World Championship in Japan, she became the first rhythmic gymnast to win all six gold medals. The 22-year-old expressed her intention to leave sports last month saying she probably has finished her career.“There was a choice between ‘labour’ in training or switching to another activity,” she said, adding she wanted to learn something else besides the training process.

His year out of the game has been surround-ed with speculation over where he will coach in the future and a week ago Guardiola add-ed fuel to the fire by revealing he wanted to return to work next season, although he added he had not held talks with any clubs.Bearing in mind Guardiola’s impressive cur-riculum and the wages he would be able to command, it is clear there is only a select band of clubs able to afford his wages. One of those clubs was thought to be Bayern Mu-nich, but in an interview on the website of the English Football Association, Guardiola stated his preference.“I’ve always found English football very fas-cinating, just for the environment, the crowd and the supporters,” said Guardiola, who spent all of his playing career with FC Barce-lona before moving to Italy where he played for Brescia and Roma, before ending his playing days with Al-Ahli and Mexican side, Dorados.“As a player, I couldn’t realise my dream to play there (in England) but I hope in the fu-ture, I have a challenge to be a coach or a manager there and feel the experience of all the coaches and players that have been there.” “It is unique, to play in that league. I want to feel the supporters, the environment, the media and the style of the players and ev-erything,” said Guardiola in an interview to mark the 150th anniversary of the FA.Guardiola pointed out that age, however, would not be a problem for him.“I am still young, just 41, so I hope in the fu-ture I could be able to train there and enjoy that,” he concluded. The former Barca manager’s words will no doubt kickstart speculation over his possible destination. He has been linked with four clubs in particular: Arsenal, Chelsea, Man-chester City and Manchester United.

CHANDIGARH SUNDAY 20 Jan 2013 23SPORTSDelhi Waveriders survive anxious moments to register second win in a row

New DelhiDelhi Waveriders survived an anxious last few minutes to defeat Mumbai Magicians 2-1 and consolidate their lead at the top of the inaugural Hero Hockey India League with 10 points from two encounters. The hosts, who had beaten Jaypee Punjab Warriors in their tournament opener, domi-nated the game against the Magicians for the first three quarters at the Major Dhyan-Chand National Stadium but their profligacy in front of the opposition goal almost came back to haunt them in the dying minutes.Despite a penalty corner conversion by Rupinder Pal Singh (27) and a fine goal by South African Lloyd Norris-Jones (48), the Delhi Waveriders could have ended up drop-ping three points had the upright not come to their rescue in the last minute. The Magicians had earned a penalty stroke in the last minute after a Sandeep Singh drag-flick hit a defender. However, the Mum-bai captain could only hit the upright and the ball was diverted outside to the relief of the Delhi team and their supporters.Sandeep had earlier scored the team’s only goal off a penalty corner in the 50th minute

and could have been the hero for his team, which took the fight to their opposition in the last quarter.“It was plain bad luck that we missed the penalty stroke. We played well in the second half and will take the positives into the next game,” said Sandeep.Earlier, the hosts began their second outing exactly from where they left in the opening encounter – going for an all out attack strat-egy while their opponents were willing to sit back and settle down. The Waveriders got their first opportunity to take the lead in the 11th minute when Lorris-Jones Llyod had to only manage a touch off Akashdeep Singh’s cross but the South Afri-can misjudged the speed of the cross.Norris was once again the culprit five min-utes later when he charged through the left inside Mumbai’s striking circle but could not beat the advancing P Sreejesh in a one-on-one situation. However, the constant pressure bore fruit in the 27th minute when Gurwinder Singh Chandi was brought down inside the striking circle and penalty corner specialist Rupinder

Pal Singh gave his team the lead in the sec-ond attempt.Their New Zealand striker Simon Child could have doubled their lead in the 38th minute but the Kiwi mistimed his shot on empty goal after Chandi had pulled the goalkeeper out of position.Norris Jones finally managed to find the sec-ond for Delhi with a close range shot in the 48th minute. A minute later Sandeep Singh scored his opening goal of the tournament on the Magicians’ second penalty corner to set up a scintillating final quarter.Mumbai Magicians’ coach Ric Charlesworth said that their team’s midfield is bit weak but still the players gave their best. “Um-pire gave a wrong decision in the first cor-ner, which cost us the match,” he stated at the post-match press conference. Skipper Sandeep Singh said that despite of weak midfield, the Team played well. “We played well in this match and we were close to drew it but umpire’s decision went against us,” he added.AK Bansal, coach of Delhi Waveriders, said that the Waveriders are playing extremely well in these two matches, said: “Our Team has gelled well and the coordination is very good, which resulted good passes. The only area to concern is handling pressure after conceding goals. We are working on that and we will surely overcome this flaw.”Bansal further added: “Gaining full points from these two victories have improved the team spirit, and the team is mentally to take on any challenge in the future. We are play-ing modern hockey and its working really well for”.The Hero Hockey India League is organised by Hockey India with official sanction from the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The inaugural season is being played from January 14 to February 10, 2013 in a home-and-away format. The five franchisee-based teams, consisting of the top hockey players from India and around the world, will com-pete for the prestigious trophy. Hero Moto-corp Ltd. is the Title Sponsor of the league while Airtel is the Associate Sponsor. Star Sports, who is the Broadcast Partner, will be telecasting all matches live.

AntiguaThe West Indies selectors have recalled ex-perienced batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan for next month’s limited overs tour of Australia. The 32-year-old right hander has not played for the West Indies in nearly 19 months ow-ing to poor form and fitness, and a strained relationship with regional authorities, CMC reports. He joins a 15-man squad that will be led by Darren Sammy and which includes young uncapped Barbadian seamer Jason Holder. The tour runs from Jan 29 to Feb 13 and comprises five One-Day Internationals and a single Twenty20.Squad: Darren Sammy (captain), Dwayne Bravo (vice captain), Darren Bravo, John-son Charles, Narsingh Deonarine, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Kieran Powell, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Thomas, Tino Best Jason Holder, Sunil Narine.

New DelhiThe inaugural India round of the Superbike World Championship (WSBK) has been shifted from March to November, citing lack of preparation time, world body for motor-cycle racing FIM said. The race, scheduled for March 8-10, will now be the season finale Nov 17 soon after the Formula 1 Oct 25-27 round at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida near here. The organisers, Jaypee Group, welcomed the change on the WSBK calendar.“It is good that we now get to host the sea-son’s final race right after the Formula 1 round so the buzz will be very much there. For the younger fans, a race in March could have clashed with their annual exams,” the official told IANS.The FIM statement said: “The World Su-perbike race in India has been moved from the March 10 to Nov 17 owing to insufficient time to train the marshals and medical staff.” The changes were incorporated in the WSBK calendar released Wednesday. The 2013 season begins in Phillip Island, Austra-lia. However, the visit of the FIM officials to the BIC later in the week will go on as planned.“The FIM representatives will be at the track Jan 19, 20 and 21, to carry out the final ho-mologation and deal with the relevant the different aspects of the event,” the statement said.

DharamsalaThis picturesque Himalayan hill station, which has lured hundreds of thousands of Westerners since Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama settled here in 1960, is all set witness its first international cricket match this month. The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Associa-tion (HPCA) is leaving no stone unturned to make the fifth and final ODI between India and England Jan 27 at its new showpiece venue, located at an altitude of 4,000 feet above sea level, with the mighty snow-clad Dhauladhar Ranges forming the backdrop, a warm and welcoming affair. The stadium, 250 km from state capital Shimla, has a 21,600-seating capacity, be-sides a world-class indoor stadium compris-ing video analysis facilities for both bowlers and players, a club lounge, restaurant, bar and banquet hall.He said the popularity of the venue soared after the seven IPL matches in the past three seasons.“We are going provide not only the players

but also the spectators with a world-class fa-cility,” Thakur, the force behind the Rs.100 crore stadium and ultra-luxurious residential complex, said.He said the HPCA has been working over-time to get the stadium ready for the match.“For the players, the Pavilion residential complex is almost ready. It has 32 huts made of imported wood and 38 concrete rooms. A world-class multi-gym is the new addition,” he added. The Pavilion, overlooking the stadium, is some three kilometres from the stadium. However, the HPCA admits the spectators might face problems in getting suitable ac-commodation.“We have got some bookings but we are ad-vising spectators to get bookings at nearby destinations also like Palampur and Jwal-amukhi,” Mohit Sood, HPCA’s press secre-tary, said. There is no five-star hotel in the vicinity of this small town. Even the airport at Gag-gal, near here, has been shut for over five months now.According to espncricinfo, the HPCA venue is the first in India to use winter rye grass scattered around the outfield, which pre-vents the grass from dying when tempera-tures fall below 10 degrees Celsius. The stadium figured first on the international cricket map in 2005 when it hosted a warm-up tie between the touring Pakistan team and the Indian Board President’s XI.Since then, the stadium has hosted 24 matches in the Ranji Trophy, apart from hosting two ODIs between India Under 19 vs Australia Under 19 Sep 24 and 25, 2005.

WashingtonDisgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong said in an interview with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey that fighting off cancer made him try to “win at all cost” even if it meant taking per-formance enhancing drugs.Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life as the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) released a scathing report in October last year, con-demning him to be the centre of a “sophis-ticated” doping program while riding for the US Postal Service Team and Discovery Channel team between 1998-2005 in the Tour de France, reports Xinhua. In the report, Armstrong was accused by about a dozen of former teammates of using performance-enchancing drugs and pres-suring his teammates to do so.When Winfrey asked Armstrong in the in-terview aired Thursday night whether these accusations were true, he admitted to it and said suffering from cancer had changed his attitude.“I grew up as a fighter. Before my diagno-sis, I was a competitor, but not so fierce,” he said. When diagnosed with testicular can-cer in 1996 he was given only a 40 percent chance of surviving. But survive he did, and he returned to cycling with a vengeance. After that, Armstrong said, he wanted to win at all cost.In fighting cancer, the ruthless attitude was good, he said. But “that’s bad” when he took it out in racing.“I wasn’t a bully before that,” he said.
