What Is Your Rule Of Life?

Isaiah 55:2 - Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in

the richest of fare.

Micah 6:8 - He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Matthew 5:6 - Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

What kind of life are we called to lead? Over the years, men have followed various codes of conduct: in medieval times the code of chivalry governed how power was exercised; a “culture of honor” is deeply rooted in traditional cultures; and in the Old West there were expectations of “straight-shooting.” A man’s word was “his bond.” Beyond such codes lies deeper governing principles for Christian disciples, and in the Beatitudes Jesus crystalized how we are to live out the abundant life as citizens of his kingdom. Here in the core of the gospel he sets out a “rule of life,” not as regulation but as a pattern of commitments and rhythm that permeates our lives, shapes our character and guides our relationships. When we hunger for righteousness we are fed what we need, are fully alive, and become all of what God desires. In a culture of materialism and superficiality, precarious employment, and uncertain rewards in the workplace, what is our “rule of life”? As men, we have much to learn from each other, so, in our annual tradition, some have offered to share their own personal perspective on seeking God’s direction in their lives. So join us for good food, music, and fellowship.

Our retreat venue: Go west from the church on 290 to Dripping Springs, take left at first traffic light; go to the 3rd traffic light (that will be Wimberley) and take a right on River Rd., go 1.3 miles to Wayside and turn right. You’ll shortly see the resort offices on the left, and we will be in the Cowboy and Indian Lodges. Take the driveway to your left about 100 yards past the offices and find a parking

place. Count on a 30 minute drive from Oak Hill. Registration fee includes 3 meals and lodging. Motel-style sleeping rooms open into a commons area and contain two beds each and private bath with bedding provided. Bring your own towel. You are also welcome to join us for part of the time.

Have You Turned In Your Pledge? As of 1/14/2013 we have received 348 pledge cards

totaling $1,120,653.00! We need to complete our budget planning for 2013 and

our 2013 goal is 400 pledges totaling $1,500,000. If you haven’t had a chance to return your 2013 estimate of

giving card, please do so soon. The church will be facing increased cost in several areas,

including utilities, debt service and insurance and we want to keep our wonderful ministries going in the

midst of that. If you have questions, please contact Angie in the church office at 288-3836 or by email [email protected].

Dearest Oak Hill ministers,Knowing that we are being lifted up by all of you have made our last two months so very blessed. Oak Hill is a praying church and we are awed by the power! We praise God daily for the many blessings that have come during our ordeal. Thank you and please continue to pray for Carson, his sister, Katey, mom and dad. This is a very long journey (3 years

and 2 months) and we are just beginning, but with your prayers and love we are certainly filled with hope and faith. We are also very thankful for the meals that have been so lovingly made and shared with Carson’s family. It provides the family more time to spend on caretaking and loving each other - what a gift! Just an update on Carson. He got to go to church recently and was thrilled. He has been in a good treatment routine and is tolerating the chemo very well. His numbers are good, so the doctors want him to be as normal as possible when he is doing this well. In the coming months the treatment becomes more intense like when they were getting him into remission, so we are taking advantage of every good day! God is so very present in our lives and we are thankful to Him and to all of you!~ The Fudges, Sandra and Rick, Jace, Shey, Katey and Carson

Thank You OHUMC!Our church set a new record this year in preparing Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes – 732 boxes! This means that 732 needy children around the world will receive probably the only Christmas gift they will get this year. The Sunshine Class wrapped the boxes during the year and gave them to people in the congregation to fill. Many individual, families, adult and children’s Sunday School classes filled boxes and/or donated toys, candy, school supplies and toiletries to the effort. Beth Cochran organized the effort and expressed particular thanks to the Walgreens at Slaughter and Mopac for their generous support.

Hospital VisitationYears ago when John Reynolds & Val Sansing were pastors here at OHUMC, Val decided it would be a great help to the pastors if we had a group of lay people that would visit the members and their families that were in the hospital. The pastors still visit, but they would always know that someone

from the church would be there too. It brought comfort to the ones in the hospital as well as the pastors. We now need several new helpers with this loving ministry. We cover all the Austin hospitals, but most of our members are in the South Austin or Westlake hospitals. You would have 2 days a month to cover, given to you on a calendar, usually the same days every month if you prefer. We have several people who work in or near a hospital, so they cover just that one. This very caring and important ministry only takes a short while of your time, but can mean so much to that person in the hospital. We really need some of you to volunteer. Email Gail Beckley at [email protected].

DiSCiple iBecoming Disciples Through Bible Study - January 28

This 34-week study is a marvelous first course for those who have never studied the Bible in-depth. The goal of Disciple is transformation, not just information. The study follows the chronological movement of the Biblical story from Creation to the New Jerusalem and explores the major themes of the Bible. The class includes daily reading assignments, questions for reflection, video segments and class discussion. The mate-rials fee is $37, which covers the cost of the study manual. Students also need a study Bible.

DiSCiple ii Into the Word, Into the World - February 4

Intended for those who have completed Disciple I, this 32-week study deepens Biblical understanding by focusing on Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts. It encourages the practice of spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives. Participants learn to approach all experiences of life as an opportunity for faithful witness and service. The materials fee is $37, which covers the cost of the study manual. Students also need a study Bible.

Join the Haiti Mission TripA mission trip to Haiti has been scheduled through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) on April 6-13, 2013, which is one week after Easter. (Easter is March 31, 2013.) Haiti is still recovering from the devastating earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010. UMVIM, in collaboration with Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti, is entering the third and final year of its Haiti Response Plan. The Plan has identified priority projects for earthquake recovery and other church and social needs that can be addressed by UMVIM teams. While priority projects have focused on construc-tion, other opportunities to be involved in the local communities exist, such as English as a second language, music, working with children, and computer training. UMVIM’s theme is Christian Love in Action, which says it all. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a ministry of recon-ciliation by moving yourself and others closer to glorifying God. The team will be led by Jon Nelson, who went to Haiti in February 2011 and April 2012. For more information, please contact Jon at 512-288-2764 or by email at [email protected].

Habitat for Humanity Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

It was a great Christmas season and now it’s pancake season! The next fund-raiser is our pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on March 2. This is a lot of fun and is a great way to raise funds for the 2013 Methodist-built home. Watch for tickets sales between services in February on the patio or in the Fellowship Hall. Tickets will be $10 each, and we get to keep $5 for each person that shows up for pancakes ($10 for those who don’t cash in their tickets). You must buy tickets in advance; no ticket sales at the door. Breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, Eggs Benedict, sausage, bacon, hash browns, juice, and coffee. What a deal! If you cannot make it to the breakfast and miss the ticket sales, you can always place a check in the offering basket any Sunday; make the check out to OHUMC and put Habitat for Humanity in the memo line. We can always use prayers for the success of the fundraising and the build. Call Jerry Morford at 301-3738 or send him an e-mail at [email protected] if you have questions about the Methodist Build or the pancake breakfast.

Stephen & Dixie Long joined Oak Hill UMC January 13, at the 8:15 a.m. service.

Stephen & Lisa Cone also joined Oak Hill UMC on January 13, at the 8:15 a.m. service.

Pancake Teams Needed! The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is February 12, and we want to make sure that there are plenty of pancakes ready and avail-able for all. This year we have decided to ask groups of people in the church (a Sunday School class, a UMW circle, a group of UM men, a group of youth, some choir members, or just a group of friends) to set up a griddle and cook pancakes. We will hope-fully have a number of griddles going and we can even have a friendly competition going to get folks to come to your griddle for pancakes! The staff is planning to participate and we hope you will too. The church will provide the pancake mix and your group can feel free to cook plain pancakes or to add whatever you’d like (ie: strawber-ries, blueberries, pecans, etc.). It will be a lot of fun! If you don’t have a griddle, we’ll help you borrow one, so don’t let that keep you from joining in the fun. Contact Suzanne Steves at [email protected] and let her know you plan to participate.

Corner

February 10 - 3:30 p.m. - FSH There is still time to register for the MidWinter Retreat, an event put on by the Southwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church. It has become a huge part of our winter and has acted as a springboard to so much more - more involvement in youth, a deeper sense of mission outreaches, have had the most impact in the lives of our students of anything we do. This year, the cost is $110 per student. There are scholarships avail-able at the Conference, District, and church level (please email or text me if you need a scholarship - we do not want cost to be a factor). This weekend will be full of worship, preaching, free time, great friendships, good food, and plenty of fun. I hope you will make plans for your student to join us! The dates are:- Middle School - Feb 1-3 @ Mt. Wesley- High School - Feb 15-18 @ Echo Valley (near Leakey)We will provide transportation. The easiest way to sign up is to register online at www.reachingyouth.org/midwinter.html. After you register, please let Dave, Director of Youth Ministries, know so we can make arrangements for vehicles, at [email protected].

Important Info about Midwinter MissionMidwinter Mission is a unique retreat in which participants will explore the issues of hunger, experience a “Homeless Day Experiment”, and discover what life is like for someone living on the streets of a city. Participants will also have awesome times of worship, attend a worship service at the Annual Conference Called Session at University UMC (just to let them know we have youth in our churches!) and enjoy times of fellowship and community. Each camper attending MW Mission is asked to bring a loaf of bread, and a jar of peanut butter and jelly. Each church group is asked to bring two cases of water. Lastly, anyone want-ing to donates coats or blankets can do so and bring them to either Midwinter 1, the Conference Office in San Antonio, or Midwinter Mission for them to be distributed to the homeless.

welcome to the Revolution! no longer do we need to chase the dream of God’s revolution of love – for the

revolution of God’s Kingdom is among us. the revolution isn’t something that will come in the future,

because the revolution is already here. (However, it’s our call to respond and to live in the

moment as disciples of Jesus Christ!)

To: All AgentsFrom: MPKids HeadquartersRe: Your Top-Secret February Mission

December was a busy month for the MPKids at Oak Hill! We sorted over 120 coats for Coats for Kids, made 100 Nativity bookmarks for the Christmas Day party for kids in East Austin, and had an amazing time at our first-ever Holiday Movie Night (and help-ing Agent Eleanor reach nearly 400 pairs for this year’s PJ Project). All I can say is WOW! Speaking of wow, will you soon be joining the ranks of Special Agents who have been promoted to Special Agent 1st Class? Congratulations to these agents who have been newly promoted!Benjamin Durbin, Sydney Fontenot, Sarah Garrison,

Joey Comey Clayton Laney, Walker Wright and Aiden Giroux were also recognized at our meeting today as they were unable to attend the last promotion ceremony. So let’s find out what God has in store for us next!

Next month we will be feeding the Youth of OHUMC dinner for our next meeting, Sunday, February 10th, so your mission will come in two parts.1) Sign up and bring a food item to help.2) We will set up the Fellowship Hall and prepare the meal for the Youth at our next meeting.Mr. Dave, our Youth Director, (and I!) are so very excited about our next mission. The Youth do so much to help the children (and MPK) at OHUMC and it will be great to be in service to them.• Please check your email from me for a link for Sign-Up Genius to sign up to bring a food item. • When an item says (2) in parentheses, it means that I need two different families to sign up for that item, even if it means bringing two or three of a particular item. I tried to be fair in dividing everything up. • Also, please sign up for only one item initially to give everyone the opportunity. • If you have any questions, just call or email me.Here is the link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084EADAB229-februaryYou know who’s smiling!
