Dear Dhyanabandhus,
“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about
the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and
earnestly.” - Buddha
What does it mean to live fully in the present moment? It means that your awareness
is completely centred on the here and now. You are not worrying about the future or
thinking about the past. When you live in the present, you are living where life is
happening. The past and future are illusions, they don't exist. As the saying goes
“tomorrow never comes”. Tomorrow is only a concept, tomorrow is always waiting
to come around the corner, but around that corner is shadows, never to have light shed
upon, because time is always now.
Living in the present entails not going unskilfully into the past or future. Sometimes
we think needlessly about the past. For example, we may be recollecting some ill-
deed we had done and remerging over it now and then. We are unable to forget it, so it
keeps popping up. What we should do is not to mope over what had already been
done, but to resolve not to repeat the mistake. That is the best we can do. It is
unwholesome and unskilful to keep mulling over a mistake, such that we become
very miserable and are unable to live in the present. Living skilfully in the present.
Doing what we have to do now well, for that will, in fact, be the best guarantee for the
future. And also there will be no regrets when we think back about the past. Instead,
there will be joy -- joy at having lived a good life and at having done good deeds.
How do we live skilfully in the present? For that we need wisdom, we need
mindfulness and understanding. We need to know how to place our mind, how to
compose our mind, how to steer our mind in the right direction -- away from the
unwholesome and towards the wholesome. for that we have to practice meditation, it
brings you to the present, it brings you to this moment. The past is a thought; it
disappears when thoughts disappear. The future is also a thought; it disappears when
you drop thinking. When you are in a state of no-thought -- there is no past, no future,
there is only the present -- in that state of no-thought you are ONE, in tune with God.
And suddenly the flood is there: you are flooded with light, with love, with grace.
You are no more a man, you are divine. To be one with god let all of us meditate.

Q 1: Poojya Guruji, is meditation
alone enough, to progress in
spirituality?
Ans 1. : Once upon a time, Narada
Maharishi, the traveler of all the 3
worlds; was traveling through earth. He
saw that all plants, animals and humans
on earth were leading a happy life.
Pondering over this, he goes to Brahma
and asks Him “The people on earth are
living a happy contended life. Why am i
not able to live such a peaceful and happy
life, though I am a yogi and though i keep
chanting the name of the lord?” Since
Brahma was engrossed in the work of
creation, he told Narada to go to Shiva
and get his doubts cleared. When
Narada reached Shiva’s abode, he found
that Shiva and Parvati were engrossed in
intense meditation. Therefore Narada
goes to Vishnu and puts forth his
question about the people on earth being
happy and a yogi like himself being
unhappy. Lord Vishnu tells Narada “Go
back to earth once again. Observe the
people there keenly. Talk to them and
then come back to me”. Following Lord
V i s h n u ’ s
i n s t r u c t i o n ,
Narada goes to
earth in disguise.
He spots a couple
returning home in
their vehicle and they were laughing
happily. He follows them and observes
that when the wife is alone, and
similarly when the husband is alone;
they abuse and find fault with the other,
stating their unhappiness. Narada then
proceeded to a park where a Father, Son
and Grandson were taking a stroll.
Narada first questions the Grandson,
whether he is happy? The grandson
replies that “Whether i am inside the
house or outside, i am forced to act
according to the wish of the elders. I’m
unhappy about not being allowed to
take my own decisions and fulfill my
wishes. Narada then questions the Son,
who exclaims that “I am always
experiencing pressure at work,
profession and family. How can i
possibly be happy? Similarly, when the
Father was questioned, he expresses his
unhappiness that he is being neglected
because of his old age. Now Narada

returns to Vishnu’s abode and narrates
his experiences on earth. “On earth
there is happiness as well as sorrow,
pain as well as pleasure, night as well as
day. Everything exists on earth”. If one
wants to attain true happiness on earth,
one must “be... yet... not be” (exist... yet...
not exist). One must be a witness and
observe life. Only then, one can
experience true happiness and peace.
Narada then realizes what true
happiness is. Only meditation is not
enough. Wisdom along with meditation
is required. Wisdom and meditation are
like the 2 wings of a bird. One without
the other is useless. Only with the help
of both wings, can the bird fly. Only
when wisdom and meditation go hand
in hand, one can become a Jeevanmukta
(a liberated living soul).
Q2. I am a meditator. Please tell me
how cows are conducive to
meditators?
Ans 2: Cow is the most Satvic Animal
among all Animals available on the
earth. These are the animals which
give perpetual peace and love. Cow is
the only animal in the earth which
draws the Soorya shakthi or vibrations
from the sun and gives it to all the
beings on the earth. Because of this
special power of
cow, it is always in
A a n a n d a &
Gowshakthi and
A a n a n d a f l ow s
throughout i t s
b o d y. H e w h o d o e s g o w s e v a
automatically receives this Aananda and
Gowshakthi. Kamadhenu and Kapila
breed of cows are the most appropriate
or suitable for meditation. If you are
interested in serving cows please do
come to our Ashram. Both these breeds
are available with us. First you come
and feed the cows the food they like and
then meditate near them. If you are
service minded, you can apply oil and
bathe them. Like this if you serve the
cows you will be in a position to absorb
these vibrations eminated by them. It is
learnt that the cow's body absorbs all
the 33 crores vibrations coming from
the universe. All these vibrations are
complimentary as well as necessary for
the well being of all the beings in the
earth. For reaching the upper stages of
meditation, these vibrations are also
very powerful. So you come and you
bring your friends also and start serving
the cows and increase your tempo of
meditation. There is no doubt that
because of this, your life will become
s m o o t h a n d h a p p y .

Q3. What is the original meaning of
“NAMA JAPA”?
Ans 3: The hidden meaning of 'Nama
Japa” is not repeating God's names-
Rama, Krishana, Shiva etc. All these are
mere names. Simply saying 'Shri Ram jai
Ram', cannot become Nama Japa. It
should join our inner 'SHABDA' (Word).
This inner 'Shabda' cannot be described
by word of mouth. Nor it can be
described by writing about it. The
“Shabda” was there even before the
creation of “KALA” (Time). Through
this 'Shabda' only, creation came into
existence. The reason for creation itself
is God's name- “NAMA”. All religions
agree on this. That it self is God, this
shabda or name is inside each one of us.
This can be experienced only by those
who are God realized. You, too, must try.
One day you may hear this “Shabda”.
That day the “Shabda” would become
yours. That day you, yourself will
become God.
Q4. Fulfillment of desire does not
give full happiness. Why?
Ans 4: Thinking that the fulfillment of
desire will give happiness is only an
illusion. It is possible for the mind to
remain in happiness only on those
moments of fulfillment. When the
happy event is over, the mind
impatiently waits for another such
event. This leads to unhappiness.
Forgetfulness and remembering are two
principal qualities of mind. Our mind
forgets happiness very fast. But
remembers unhappiness always,
because, mind loves unhappiness more
than happiness. But man doesn't know it.
More than japa and meditation, we
remember unhappiness. Desire is a
mirage, an illusion. One can never get
Ananda [bliss] from it. With the
illusion of getting happiness it always
chases the so called happy events. But in
bliss one experiences the real love, real
happiness and real satisfaction.

- Quotes From Bhagavad Gita
May 2013
1. O Raghava, be outwardly active
but inwardly inactive, outwardly a doer
but inwardly a non-doer, and thus play
your part in the world.
2. O Raghava, abandon all desires
inwardly, be free from attachments and
latent impressions, do everything
outwardly and thus play your part in the
world.
3. O Raghava, adopt a comprehensive
view, characterised by the abandonment
of all objects of contemplation, live in
your innate Self, liberated even while
alive (jivan-mukta), and thus play your
part in the world.
4. Burn the forest of duality with
the fire of the conviction, ‘I am the one
pure Consciousness’ and remain happy.
5. You are bound firmly on all sides
by the idea, I am the body’. Cut that bond
by the sword of knowledge ‘I am
Consciousness’ and be happy.
6. Discarding the attachment to
non-Self, regarding the world as a
p a r t l e s s
( w h o l e ) ,
concentra
t e d a n d
w i t h
attention
t u r n e d
i n w a r d ,
remain as
pure Consciousness.
7. Re m a i n a lw ay s a s p u r e
Consciousness which is your constant
(i.e. true) nature beyond the states of
waking, dream and deep sleep.
8. O mighty-armed, be always free
from mental concepts like the heart of a
rock though not insentient like it.
9. Do not be that which is
understood, nor the one who
understands. Abandon all concepts and
remain what you are.
10. Eliminate one concept by
another and the mind by the mind and
abide in the Self. Is this so difficult, O
holy man?
Yoga Vasishta:
Chapter 7 “Method of Purification”- Ramana Maharshi
May 2013
11. Sever the mind, which has
on account of its cares
become red hot, with the
mind which is like iron
sharpened by the study of
scriptures.
12. O Raghava, what
have you to do with this inert and dumb
body? Why do you feel helpless and
miserable by joys and sorrows on
account of it?
13. What a vast difference between
the flesh, blood, etc. (composing the
body) and you, the embodiment of
consciousness! Even after knowing this
why do you not abandon the idea of Self
in this body?
14. The mere knowledge that this body
is like a piece of wood or a clod of earth
enables one to realize the Supreme Self.
15. How strange that, while the real
Brahman is forgotten by men, the unreal
called avidya (nescience) appears very
real to them (lit. struts about before
them).
16. It is again strange that while the
Supreme Brahman is forgotten by men,
the idea ‘this is mine’ called avidya is
firmly held by them (lit.
strongly confronts them).
17. When you do your
w o r k d o i t w i t h o u t
attachment even as a
crystal which reflects the
objects before it (but is not
affected by them).
18. The conviction that everything
is Brahman leads one to Liberation.
Therefore reject entirely the idea of
duality which is ignorance. Reject it
entirely.
“Those who grumble at the little
thing that has fallen to their lot to
do will grumble at everything.
Always grumbling they will lead
a miserable life…. But those who
do their duty putting their
shoulder to the wheel will see the
light, and higher and higher
duties will fall to their share”.

1. Supreme Bliss cannot be
experienced through contact of the
senses with their objects. The supreme
state is that in which the mind is
annihilated through one-pointed
enquiry.
2. The bliss arising from the
contact of the senses with their objects
is inferior. Contact with the sense-
objects is bondage; freedom from it is
liberation.
3. Attain the pure state between
existence and non- existence and hold
on to it; do not accept or reject the inner
or the outer world.
4. Depend always on that true
reality between the sentient and the
inert which is the infinite space-like
heart.
4. Depend always on that true
reality between the sentient and the
inert which is the infinite space-like
heart.
5. The belief in a knower and the
known is called bondage. The knower is
bound by the known; he is liberated
when there is nothing to know.
6. Abandoning the ideas of seer, seen
and sight along with latent desires
(vasanas) of the past, we meditate on that
Self which is the primal light that is the
basis of sight.
7. We meditate on the eternal Self,
the light of lights which lies between
the two ideas of existence and non-
existence.
8. We meditate on that Self of
consciousness, the bestower of the fruits
of all our thoughts, the illuminator of
all radiant objects and the farthest limit
of all accepted objects.
9. We meditate on that immutable
Self, our reality, the bliss of which arises
in the mind on account of the close
contact between the seer and the seen.

important thing is to reach the roof. You can reach it by stone
