From the Pastor MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day is a holiday to honor and remember all the military people who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces. Memorial Day is dedicated to those who have died in military service, but don’t forget that heroes never die, they live in our memories. At the same time, we need to remember that no war is justified before God. War only brings sadness to everyone.

Every year on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day weekend reminds us that our freedom isn’t for free. It’s the most appropriate time for remembering that the freedom we have today is the result of human dedication and

sacrifice. Heroic gestures of American soldiers for our country’s honor will always be captured in our memory.

It’s an uneasy and very difficult task to be a true soldier. We share the sentiments of sorrow and sadness, as well as gratitude, to honor all fallen heroes of America. As we pay our respects to the soldiers who gave themselves for our country, let us also be inspired to serve our country by our love towards our neighbor and spreading peace around us.

Fr. Louis Maram Reddy

OUR FAITH COMMUNITY

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” - Jn 17:1-3

All Masses and parish events have been cancelled until further notice - Fr. Louis is still offering individual reconciliation on Saturday mornings from 9:00AM-10:00AM. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the parish office Monday-Friday from 8:00AM-3:30PM.

THIS WEEK

Liturgy & Music Notes from Jan Memorial Day – Monday, May 25 – Fr. Louis will continue the tradition of blessing graves, to honor our deceased loved ones. Fr. will go to Calvary Cemetery on Memorial Day at 10:00AM. Anyone is welcome to join him there, observing appropriate social distancing.

Social norms are changing very quickly, and the bishops of Wisconsin have been diligently communicating and updating their plans for us to resume our public celebration of Mass and Eucharist. We have also had weekly staff meetings to discuss the safety measures that will be put into place as soon as we receive direction from Bishop Powers. We do anticipate, for sure, that we will need extra hands to help with sanitation in the church after and between Masses. This is creating a new ministry and a way that volunteers can serve our parish as we transition gradually into our “new normal”. We don’t know exactly what to expect, but whatever changes are put into place, we trust that the decisions have been made in our best interest and safety. From the directives that have been published in other areas, it is very likely that we will be encouraged to wear a mask to church. If you feel comfortable as a volunteer to help with wiping pews, door handles, etc. between Masses (we will provide protective measures for you), please call Tracy in the office with your contact information. We will contact you when we have more information. In memory of all who have given the ultimate sacrifice to serve others in our country, I share the following prayer, composed by Austin Fleming:

A Memorial Day Prayer “In the quiet sanctuaries of our own hearts, let each of us name and call on the One whose power over us is great and gentle, firm and forgiving, holy and healing ... You who created us, who sustain us, who call us to live in peace, hear our prayer this day. Hear our prayer for all who have died, whose hearts and hopes are known to you alone ... Hear our prayer for those who put the welfare of others ahead of their own and give us hearts as generous as theirs ... Hear our prayer for those who gave their lives in the service of others, and accept the gift of their sacrifice ... Help us to shape and make a world where we will lay down the arms of war and turn our swords into ploughshares for a harvest of justice and peace ... Comfort those who grieve the loss of their loved ones and let your healing be the hope in our hearts... Hear our prayer this day and in your mercy answer us in the name of all that is holy. The peace of God be with you” - Austin Fleming

PARISH HAPPENINGS

From the Parish Nurse Respect: A feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities or achievements; due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others.

As I travel around the community, county and state I love to take the time to watch people and their interaction with others. I love to look into their eyes and imagine the Holy Spirit alive in them. If we automatically assume respect for the Holy Spirit, then their spirit is valuable and deserves honor and respect. I cannot imagine looking at someone and judging him or her to not be worthy of respect. I am not to judge. If we keep this concept clear in our minds it becomes easier to respect and honor others.

Your spirit grows, strengthens and matures with every encounter in life. If you fail to stop and look back, always looking ahead at the obstacles in your path or failing to see the Holy Spirit in them, you miss the opportunity to thank those people along the way who have encouraged your journey. If you never look, you risk missing some special people, put there by God because He knew you and I needed them at that/this particular time. As we approach Pentecost next weekend, pray to see the Holy Spirit in everyone you encounter and thank the Lord for their presence in your life.

Thank you all for your presence in my life!

Stay well and God bless,

Ann Jelinek RN, PN

Senior Scholarships Each year the St. Mary’s Home and School Association presents two scholarships to graduating seniors who exemplify the traits and characteristics of a St. Mary’s graduate. The Home and School Board members review applications and essays from our alumni to choose those most deserving of these awards. We are very proud to announce this year’s recipients. The Sister Mary Alice Fehringer Scholarship was awarded to Haley Voermans-Dean. The St. Mary’s Home and School Good Christian Scholarship was presented to Jimmy Lee. We are proud of both recipients and all they have accomplished. Good luck to all our graduates!

Happy Memorial Day Thank you to all our veterans and God Bless you! We hope everyone has a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

Reflection

Seventh Sunday of Easter

What does faith and religion do for us? Ultimately, they remind us of some truths we conveniently forget: we are created by a loving God, we have imperfections, we sin, we need to be forgiven, we have a mission and a purpose, it’s not just about us, and we hunger for the joy of salvation. These are human truths that are not dependent upon whether we like them. Ignoring them places us on the paths of comfort and satisfaction as we blindly pursue the busyness and superficiality of our empty lives. Instead of pursuing supernatural and lasting pleasure, we choose things that are easier and quicker to obtain: sex, drugs, travel, houses, cars, fame, popularity, self-achievement and satisfaction, physical enjoyment, and the like.

We may also find ourselves falling victim to more negative responses to what life brings us: anger, envy, lust, pride, gluttony, greed, and apathy. Human hearts can become so hardened to the truth that violence becomes the response of first choice. Being a Christian is hard! Yet, as Pope Francis reminds us, the Church needs to be a field hospital that has to be prepared to provide people with the remedy they need. What we need is Jesus Christ. The Church, with all of the glory of the sacraments, exists to help make Christ present and real for us. Once we find Christ, we find joy. Joy is a matter of the heart that is beyond pleasure and happiness. It is not found in some earthly satisfaction, only in Christ.

Once we accept that we are destined to be in Christ, then we will discover eternal life. Namely, “that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” It is easy to conveniently forget truth and pursue illusions immediately within our grasp, but at what price? A man celebrating 60 years of marriage remarked that it took so much effort and so many attempts to convince his wife that they were meant to be together. Even his friends told him he was foolish. He easily could have given up and pursued other interests. He chose to persevere and is so grateful that he made that choice because he now has a pearl of great price. Do we see a value in persevering in our faith regardless of the cost? If we don’t take the risk, we could lose more than we know.
