Nicole Welke to be Ordained The entire church family of Grace Lutheran is invited to witness and celebrate the ordination of Nicole Marie Welke on December 13 at 5:00 pm. A reception will follow the ordination. Nicole graduated from Gettysburg Seminary in May 2014 and has received a call to serve as Associate Pastor of Faith Lutheran in Valders, WI.

Annual Meeting Time Changes The Grace Lutheran Church Council has announced that our Annual Meeting to be held on January 21st will begin at 6:30 pm. This is slightly earlier than previous years. The potluck will also begin earlier at 5:15 pm.

Fair Trade News! Our Fair Trade Team has a great Christmas idea for you! We have put together gift bas-kets of some of our favorites for you to give as gifts this Christmas. The baskets will be for sale during December until they are all

sold. As always, no one is profiting from the sales of Fair Trade items except the farmers and their families. Think of it as giving two gifts this Christmas! You may purchase Fair Trace products through the church office any time. If you have an interest in helping on the Fair Trade Team, please contact the church office. We would be thrilled to have you!

Cookie Walk Update

Our annual Cookie Walk, Lefse, and Craft Sale will be held Saturday, De-cember 13. The doors to the Craft area will open at 8:30 am. Doors to the Cookie Walk and Lefse Sale will be open from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

Sign-up sheets are in the Gathering Area for donations of time, ingredients, crafts, and cookies!! Thank you to the many helping hands that make this event possible.

Lefse may be picked up on the day it is made (Tuesday, December 9), Saturday at the Cookie Walk, or between services that Sunday.

The ingredients for the Fair Trace chocolate bars come from several different countries. The cocoa comes from the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Peru, while the sugar comes from Par-aguay and the vanilla from Madagascar! Perhaps your children or grandchildren would enjoy researching one of those countries as they snack on a treat.

Grades Six and Seven Service Activity Twenty-one students in the Wednesday After School GLOW class visited with the residents at Golden Age Nursing Home on October 29. They played Bingo and shared treats as part of our country’s Make A Dif-ference Day. It was a very enjoyable time for kids of all ages! In November the class sent “care packages” and cards for Christmas to our US soldiers and Grace students in college. Patti Gaedtke, Jen Beaumier, Claudia Osero, and Bill Sparr are assisting Pastor Ziemer.

A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK

Things We Never Talk About It is that time of year when we intentionally

avoid certain topics. If family is important and we want to stay con-nected, well, better that we not talk about certain subjects.

We are increasingly doing that as a nation as well. Immigra-tion is one of the most pressing issues in our country but our legisla-tive leaders won’t discuss it, at least not for the sake of arriving at any concrete action. Other subjects like abortion, same-gender marriage, prisons, education, poverty, structural racism, or climate change, people and political leaders seldom discuss. When it is brought up rather than truly talking about it, people immediately launch into bumper-sticker statements designed to close off open-ended, thought-filled talk.

All this is further exacerbated by today’s use of technology and immediate access to information. Information is not discussion. Downloading the latest information on a subject does not mean the information is correct, useful, applicable, exhaustive, or the only view on that subject. Scientists who study the brain say that the way our brain works is rapidly changing as a result of the immediate access and availability of information and people. We think that we have talked with someone when we have only texted, emailed, FaceBooked or connected in some latest fad of technological communication. We think we know something when we have downloaded and scanned the information. But much less of the frontal cortex of our brain is being utilized in these technological interchanges. For the full brain to be used we need face-to-face exchanges, give-and-take of contrari-an views, a wide array of sensory interaction (how does the issue smell, taste, sound, feel, and look), doing such in a nature setting, and fully engaging in listening and also with the possibility that our understanding will be expanded and our mind could be changed.

Consider Jesus! Not the romanticized story, but dig into the reality of the flesh-and-blood Jesus. God did not send a text, God came in the flesh. And God came not to tell us the answer, but to ex-perience our story, and to invite us to see and experience God.

Also, God did not come polished and convenient. Oh, we’ve tried our best to make the story sound that way. The so-called virgin birth was not met with, “Isn’t that wonderful that Mary and Joseph are having a pre-marriage, virgin-birthed child!” It was rather met with Joseph doubting Mary and coming to the conclusion of calling it all off (Matthew 1). The story about being born in a manger in Bethle-hem was the opposite of polished and convenient. Mangers are not a synonym for cradle. God did make use of government action, but a decree that meant a ninety mile walk or donkey ride when eight or nine months pregnant! Luke 2, this best known of stories, is the op-posite of convenient and polished.

The Gospel of John explains Jesus’ birth as “the Word be-came flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth.” (John 1) This word, action, truth from God is very different from Google, Wikipe-dia, and your favorite smartphone app. This flesh-and-blood commu-nication of God will fire up every bit of our frontal lobe and all of our

Christmas With Friends

Christmas with Friends is once again being planned for Christmas Day 2014. Last year, we were blessed to serve over 200 people including those who came for the meal at Grace Lutheran Church and those meals that were delivered to the shut-ins and our friends re-quired to work on Christmas Day. Dinner will be served at the church from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, with deliveries taking place beginning at 11 am. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling Deb-bie at the church office at 715 453-4066. Please indicate whether you will be dining at the church or need to have your meal delivered.

The outpouring of support from Grace and the community has been amazing and we welcome the support again this year. Last year, approximately thirty volunteers helped before, during, and after the meal, as well as approx-imately fifteen volunteers who delivered meals around the Tomahawk area. We also had people distribute flyers to local businesses to advertise the event and others who decorated and set up the Fellowship Hall. In addition to our volunteers, all of the food items to make the fabulous meal were donated and we had an outpouring of fi-nancial support to cover the other costs associated with the event.

With the weather and economy placing additional burdens on people, we believe we will serve a larger number of meals this year. Any monetary donations or gifts of time to help with the dinner will be greatly appreciated. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the office at Grace Lutheran Church. brain. It comes to occupy every recess of our heart and emotions. Life-impacting, soul-filling, value-centering are what this Word of God does to us.

The application of Jesus’ birth for us, for our family gatherings, and for all controversial issues is that Je-sus is born into controversy. His “virgin birth” and “being laid in a manger” are not just information. The nature of Mary’s pregnancy stirred a rush to judgment against Mary and the demand of that long walk to Bethlehem was a crushing load where everything was against Mary and Joseph and that birth.

Yet, this “Word-made-flesh” we call our Lord! “LORD” means Jesus rules us! He is not a text message and not just a story written in a book called the Bible. He is the LIVING WORD of God. This has real, hit-the-road driving reality. The living reality of Jesus as the Word-made-flesh and our Lord means that we can and must talk about everything. Nothing needs to be hidden, avoided, or covered up. Jesus came not to give us the right answer. He came to love, to forgive, to enter our story in all its sordid arguments and controversies and to die – at the in-sistence of righteous wisdom of the most religious and at the hands of autocratic political power.

The upshot is that we can disagree. Better yet, God’s Holy Spirit leads us into listening, respecting others, and having our preset views suddenly changed (Philippians 2). Best, we can talk and deeply delve into the most difficult of topics with one clear mindset, i.e. Jesus is Lord, not we; love is the goal, not being correct; Jesus is the savior, not our best conceived, most eloquent explanation; and salvation comes not when our view wins, but only in the forgiveness of a flesh-and-blood God nailed to a tree.

This is what makes Christmas truly merry! We can talk where many dare not go. Jesus as the Word-made-flesh shows us the way. Jesus came not to win arguments and to hand out correct information. He came to love and to die for broken people who will never get it together, but who in Jesus receive love and begin to love!

The Philippine Story The Philippine’s story continued… This month I’d like to introduce you to an energetic boy with a big personality and LOTS of spirit! BJ (Benjamin) is the 13 year old brother of Honey Grace. He is compassionate, makes friends easily, and he has the ability to make those around him feel very comfortable. BJ is a natural leader and the oth-er children look to him for guidance and dance lessons! In addition to his knack for dancing, he is gifted in chore-ography, photography and sports. December Special Offering Dial Down the Debt

Our Special Offering for Decem-ber will go to “Dial Down the Debt.” We invite you to make a special contribution to the PRINCIPAL ONLY of our

building debt during the month of December 2014. As you know, paying directly to the principal will eliminate the costly interest on that payment amount. The people of Grace have responded won-derfully to this annual opportunity, with an amazing $6,348 given last year!

We have indeed been blessed with a beautiful facility at Grace. It has been ten years since we dedicated the addition of our new sanctuary and office area, and it has transformed the way we do ministry at Grace! As we’ve mentioned, in 2015 we will again be separating the Debt Retirement Fund from our General Fund to help improve our awareness of the building loan.

Do You Have Room?

“And she gave birth to her firstborn Son and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). As these familiar words are read every Christmas, we repeat them in our minds. Having heard them so often, we know them by heart. And every year, pastors try to come up with novel thoughts about an age-old story. Sadly, as much as we love to hear the story, we too often put it out of our thoughts as soon as we put up the calen-dar for the new year. Like the infamous innkeeper, we cannot find room for the newborn Baby. We are creatures of habit, and it seems that it’s quite difficult to change old habits, most of them not very beneficial. If we keep our focus on that simple message, though, we might be able to create new habits. Instead of hurriedly scanning our devo-tions for the day, we might make it a habit to remind ourselves that it is God Himself speaking to us through His Word. Instead of uttering a quick, “Morning. How are you?” we might actually take a few minutes to wait for the answer and offer encour-agement and maybe even pray with a colleague, a friend, a family member. Instead of setting our own schedules, we might ask God to teach us to number our days so that we can go ahead in His wisdom (Psalm 90:12). What other good habits could we establish if we focused on “our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for [our] sake[s] He became poor, so that [we] by His poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9)? Never in Scrip-ture do we read of Jesus turning anyone away be-cause He was too busy (and we would say He was), He had someplace He needed to be (and He did), or He was too tired (and Scripture tells us that Jesus grew weary). No, He always had room for that per-son who needed Him, just as He has room for each of us with our needs and sorrows and joys. Do you have room? By His grace, God will warm our cold hearts and give us the desire to be His stewards with room in our day to serve Him, room in our finances to give what is needed, room in our lives for Him to work His will in and through us.

Rev. Jean DeVoll-Donaldson will begin her ministry as DEM on January 9th, 2015. She comes to us from the Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod. Her typical emphases as a DEM were renewal/ redevelopment of congregations, starting new congregations and other related ministries, leadership development, stewardship education and re-sourcing. She has served as a member of the ELCA's Renewal Team. Pastor Jean is certified in the ELCA to train others to be coaches, is trained to support congregations working with Natural Church Development (NCD), can provide conflict transformation mediation and recently completed a week-long immersion in faith based community or-ganizing. She looks forward to finding out how her training and experiences might dovetail with interests of oth-ers within our synod.
