Ruth Circle Fabric Kits Ruth Circle is once again assembling Fabric Kits for Lutheran Relief. Fabric Kits supply vocational training pro-grams with fabric for teaching sewing and for newly trained tailors to launch

their sewing business. This year’s requirements for kits are: • 3-yard pieces of cotton or cotton blend fabric • 250-300 yards of matching thread Your contributions would be greatly appreciated. Please leave them in the labeled box outside the church office.

Fifth Grade Milestone Grace Lutheran’s “Seder Meal” on Sunday even-ing, March 17, at 5:00 pm is a milestone for all 5th graders and Middle School youth who joined Grace during the past year. The purposes are to deepen the meaning of Holy Communion; initiate parents and youth together as a purpose of Grace’s ministry; and begin, or assist with, the transition into Middle School and the teenage years. This is a very formal and meaningful meal and an event with all the sym-bolic food of a Seder provided. Please RSVP to the Church Office with the number from your family who will at-tend. We encourage you to dress up for this meal, which is in your honor, and please bring a dish to pass.

Easter Breakfast The traditional Easter Breakfast will be held again this year! It will follow the 6:30 am sunrise service at approximately 7:00 am in the Fellowship Hall.

Sunday School News There will be no classes on Palm Sunday, March 24, or Easter Sunday, March 31 (due to spring break).

2012 Cookie Walk, Lefse, and Crafts Sale Report Sorry for the delay in reporting, but here are the numbers for the 2012 Cookie Walk, Lefse, and Craft Sale. Total collected was $3,698.95! That’s approxi-mately $1,000 more than the prior year. Thank you to everyone involved!!

Now, after paying our expenses, we have $3,400 to allocate as follows: Half ($1,700) will go toward the Kitchen Renovation Fund; one quarter ($850) goes toward landscaping; and the final quarter ($850) goes toward debt reduction. Isn’t that amazing?

You should know that all the crafts are donated to this sale, as are the cookies and the lefse ingredients. We have a wonderfully generous congregation!

Companionship Breakfast Sunday, March 3, at 9:30 am Please join us on Sunday, March 3, for the Compan-ionship Breakfast, benefiting a scholarship fund for the fellowship weekend at Pine Lake in August 2013.

Lenten Soup Meals continue every Wednes-day through March 20. The lunch meal begins at 11:30 am; the supper meal begins at 5:30 pm. Please join us for a delicious bowl of soup and fellowship. All are welcome. The Fellowship Committee

Thank you from Pastor Karla I would like to thank you for the many ways you have welcomed me to Grace! Your comments, such as, “We’re so glad you are here!” and “It’s so good to have you with us!” have warmed my heart over and over again. I would also like to thank you for your kind expressions of sympathy upon the death of my Aunt Nina. Your concern has been a comfort.

Although I am scheduled to begin officially on March 1, it won’t be until March 7, as my aunt’s memorial will be held in Worthington, MN on March 6 and I will be officiating at the service. I ask for your continued prayers.

I look forward to settling in to a regular schedule at Grace, which means that I will be with you on a more consistent basis—and that will afford opportunities to get to know you better and to be in ministry with you.

I thank God for bringing us together! Pastor Karla

Easter Resurrection Egg Hunt This event will take place on Easter Sunday, March 31, from 9:30 to 10:15 am in the basement of Grace. All children, pre-k through grade 5, are invited to par-ticipate.

Attention Grades 6 – 12! ! We need your help on two separate dates to set up for the Easter Egg Hunt. Please come to the church on Saturday, March 16, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm and Saturday, March 30, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. After the work is finished, we will have FOOD, along with a movie or game night.

A WORD FROM

PASTOR KARLA

I am delighted to join the ministry team at Grace! I’ve always been welcomed so warmly whenever I’ve worshipped with you and am looking forward to getting to know you better in the months ahead.

I will start officially on Friday, March 7. In the meantime I will be assisting Pastor Mark with preaching and pre-siding at worship services. You will also see me at some of the Lenten services during February.

I am still serving as chaplain at LSS Homme Youth and Family Pro-grams in Wittenberg; however, the reduction in my hours there is al-lowing me to partner with you in ministry at Grace. I will be the “contract supply pastor” (20 hours per week), with office hours here Thursdays – Saturdays and two Sundays a month, as well as some Wednesday afternoons.

Worthington, MN is my hometown, where I still have family. I attend-ed schools there. I graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, with a double major in German and Religion and from Luther Semi-nary with an M. Div. Degree

I first served as Parish Deaconess (“Sister” Karla) at Augustana in St. James, MN, and was then ordained to the ministry of word and sacra-ment and became “Pastor” Karla in 1982.

I’ve also served parishes in Babbitt, MN and Hawarden, IA. I was chaplain at Bremwood Lutheran Children’s Home in Waverly, IA be-fore coming to LSS Homme, where I have served for the past eleven years.

Being a CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) resident at Rochester Meth-odist Hospital, Rochester, MN and again at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN, provided me with excellent training for min-istry with the ill and dying and those in crisis situations. During those two years, I was fortunate to be able to live in community with the Franciscan sisters in Rochester and the School Sisters of Notre Dame in St. Paul.

I enjoy reading and traveling and have a passion for history, especially the Civil War and World War II. I also have strong connections to Crailsheim, Germany, where I was an exchange student during my junior year in high school.

Freya and Flossy are my two cats who are delightful companions. They make me laugh and help me keep things in perspective.

Please feel free to stop by my office! I welcome your company!

Blessings to you! Pastor Karla 3

ABUNDANT THANKS!

A Huge Thank You to the MANY people who made Grace’s D3 (Driving Down the Debt) Dinner & Auction a tre-mendous success: Despite the difficult weather, we had a wonderful turnout of people who were… - welcomed by terrific decorations thoughtfully prepared by Corky Burcalow, - treated to a delicious dinner especially prepared by Patti Hilgendorf and Cathy Schmit, - graciously served by our young people and our young-at-heart, - and, entertained by our auctioneer Arnie Lange and his brother Everett, who served as our emcee.

Whether you came and enjoyed dinner, helped set up and decorate, cook, serve, clean up, assist with the auction, etc., shared a pan of your delicious bars, shared some of your many talents, donated one of the nearly ninety auc-tion items, bid on auction items or contributed to the drawings, or any combination of the above, we thank you wholeheartedly! The generosity of so many people was truly overwhelming. Our mission was to offer the people of Grace an opportunity for fun and fellowship while raising money for our beautiful building. There is no doubt that together we accomplished that mission!

This event helped to raise over $7,300 that will be applied to our loan. We couldn’t have done this without the help of MANY people. March Special Offering—NATH (Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing) (The following article was submitted by Tammy Modic, Executive Director) Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH) celebrates two years of operations for Frederick Place It is so hard to believe and so wonderful at the same time to realize that NATH has celebrated two years of Frederick Place – an emergency, temporary homeless shelter located in Rhinelander – being open. As I continue to travel the five county areas that we serve to do speaking engagements, I continue to marvel at the generosity and warm welcomes I receive from in-dividuals. Frederick Place has been home for 211 individuals (113 males, 70 females, and 28 children). Our young-est resident was seven months old and we have had two individuals 62 years of age and over. We have had residents from all five counties (120 – Oneida; 27 – Vilas; 24 – Lincoln; 14 – Langlade; 7 – Forest; and nineteen who did not sleep in any one of these coun-ties the night before coming to Frederick Place). For every night that a resident stays at Frederick Place, we get a “shelter night”; we have had just over 8,000 shelter nights since opening our doors. We have also provided shelter for thirteen veterans. The communities we serve continue to wrap them-selves around Frederick Place. We have had 3,051 documented volunteer hours and 316+ evening meals donated. One of the rewarding experiences that con-tinue to happen is that former residents are now be-ginning to “give back” to Frederick Place. They have given back in the form of developing and maintaining our website, helping at a fund raising event, and providing support staff hours in the house. I would like to thank each and every one of you per-sonally for your support, dedication, donations, well wishes, and guidance. As the Executive Director, I may be the “Face of Frederick Place,” but I do not do it alone. I have had the same team of staff working in the house since we opened our doors. Becca, Susan, Jodi, Jessie, and Gloria have been the team that keeps the house running. They each provide residents with different experiences and support.

!Hit the Road!

!! That day of the Resurrection, two friends were walking along the road to Emmaus. They didn’t know, though, that it was Resurrection Day. That’s why they were walking along with downcast faces. Along comes Jesus. “Hi,” He says, “What’s up? What are you talking about?” “Don’t you know?” they ask incredulously. “Where have you been? Under a rock? We’re talk-ing about Jesus. He’s dead. We counted on Him for everything, but our hope is gone. He’s dead.” “No, no, no,” Jesus responds. “Haven’t you read your Bible? Don’t you know this was all planned out before the world began?” And He starts at the beginning and patiently explains the prophe-cies of Scripture and how they have been fulfilled in the past few days. Finally, as they eat together, as Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to them, their eyes are opened. Can’t you imag-ine? Their eyes are wide open. It’s safe to say their mouths were probably hanging open, too, as Jesus disappeared from their vision – from their physical sight, but not from their hearts and minds, and they return to Jerusalem with a new message: “The Lord has risen indeed…” (Luke 24:34). We have our opportunities, too, to explain Scripture to the downcast, the bewildered, the con-fused. We can come alongside our friends on their “road to Emmaus” and ask, “Hey, what’s up?” Many people, even those who claim to be Christian, still base their beliefs on what they think, what they con-ceive to be logical, and what others have said. Like Jesus, we can turn their thoughts to Scripture. We can invite them to church where they might receive Christ’s body and blood and have their spiritual eyes opened. We have opportunities, also, to give our money to support pastors, teachers, and missionar-ies as they preach and teach the Risen Christ. As we use the resources and gifts God has given us to fur-ther His Kingdom, the Holy Spirit will cause the sure hope of salvation to cause the hearts of many to “burn within [them]” (Luke 24:32).

Did you know? Grace Lutheran has an online calendar! 1. Go to our website: www.gracelutherantomahawk.org 2. Scroll down and on the right hand side under “Links” you will see “Church Calendar.” We do our best to keep this calendar accurate and up to date at all times. 7

GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL Thursday, February 14, 2013

MEMBERS PRESENT: Heather Engel, Brian Storm, John Kromm, Margie Welke, Forest Gibeault, Patti Gaedtke, Jean Huntoon, Karen Olson, Brian Schmidt, Judy Juedes, Autumn Frederick, Nathan Tobias. ALSO PRESENT: Sarah Mann, Treasurer, and Pastor Mark Ziemer. MEMBERS ABSENT: Sam Bourassa, Mindy Gabrich. The evening started with a supper of pizza, salad and a soft drink and time to get to know one another a bit and share experiences about being on the Church Council. President John Kromm then called the meeting to order and Brian Storm led Council members in devotions with a reading regarding our Lenten Journey begun with Ash Wednesday. Those of us who attended the Wednesday Evening Service were touched and inspired by the youth participation and great attendance by families of all ages. Pastor Mark suggested that when we ask where we have seen God at work at Grace, perhaps we should also ask, “What is God up to?”, knowing that He is always in control, and “Where is He leading us?” Next was the “Passing of the Council Binders” from those who have finished their terms of office and gave us the opportunity to say thank you to Jean Huntoon, Patti Gaedtke and Sam Bourassa for their service to Grace. The election of new Council Officers for 2013 was held. Elected were Heather Engel, President; John Kromm, Vice President; Karen Olson, Secretary. Motion to approve by Margie Welke/Judy Juedes. Motion carried. John Kromm continued to lead the meeting and Heather will take over for the March meeting. Committee Liaisons Assignments: Stewardship: Forest Gibeault Evangelism: Karen Olson Fellowship: Judy Juedes Service/Outreach: Brian Schmidt Long Range Planning: John Kromm Personnel: Heather Engel Mutual Ministry: Brian Schmidt Youth & Family: Mindy Gabrich Education: Margie Welke Worship: Margie Welke Buildings & Grounds: Brian Storm Youth Board: Nathan Tobias & Autumn Frederick Discussion establishing meeting dates and times of committees in order to better share information with Church Council, committees and the congregation resulted in the following schedule: Missional Committees meet the first Thursday of the month, Church Council will meet the second Thursday and Administrative Committees meet the last Thursday of the month. Motion by Heather Engel/second by Margie Welke. Motion carried. The Church Council Covenant was then passed and signed by Council members. And the Meeting Devotions List was passed for all to volunteer/sign. The Easter Breakfast was discussed and volunteer list passed for all to sign up. It was suggested that, if the youth going to Africa help with the breakfast, donations received go to offset their expenses. Motion by Heather Engel/Brian Storm. Motion carried. Motion by Karen Olson/Judy Juedes that donations received from the Soup Lunches & Suppers be designated for Camperships for Youth. It was also discussed that the last Wednesday Lenten Supper has been handled by Coun-cil members and the assignment sheet was passed to everyone for sign-up. Motion by Margie Welke/Brian Storm to approve the January Council minutes. Motion carried. The Treasurer’s Report was given by Sarah Mann. She explained that the reason our finances were so tight last month was that both she and Pam Kopp had written checks for the Church mortgage so there will be no need for a payment in February. Motion by Heather Engel/Judy Juedes to approve. Motion carried.

Heather Engel reported she would like start to publicize the 2015 National Youth Convention to be held in Detroit so that families can sign up early and save registration fees. Brian Storm stated that the Buildings & Grounds Committee had decided to go ahead with insulating the heat pipes but recently found out the cost would be higher than expected by about $1,572.00. An anonymous donor has volunteered to pay the balance but the committee wants to re-inspect to confirm the need before investing more money in the project. Pastor Mark announced that the Long Range Planning Committee has been going over the feedback from the opening session held before the Annual Meeting. Forest Gibeault has started to compile and sort the information and is getting ready to analyze the responses and LRPC will be sharing this information with the con-gregation. There will also be information shared at the next Council meeting about the South Africa trip this summer and why this is a ministry supported by ELCA and our Synod and why valuable for Grace. It was suggested that Council give the no-longer-used folding chairs from Fellowship Hall to anyone who can use them. A free-will offering will be accepted. Motion by Margie Welke/Autumn Frederick. Motion carried. Christi Lobermeier has resigned as chancel choir director because of increased business responsibilities and time constraints. Council thanks Christi for her time and talents and representatives will meet with Christi for her in-put and guidance on the next step. The Grace Council Retreat is set for April 6th. Time and place to be announced. Church Ladies Diner will again be held at the Home & Sports Show. Motion by Brian Storm/Judy Juedes to des-ignate 25% of the profits go to the youth going to Africa, 25% to the Guatemala Mission for Education and 50% toward Grace Debt Reduction. Motion carried. The Bluegrass Festival will be held at Grace June 28th. Grace will be responsible for selling tickets. Concert mon-ies earned will be split 50/50 between Grace and the performers. They have also agreed to play at the Outdoor Church Service, if approved, by Grace. Margie Welke is seeking egg cartons and plastic eggs for an Easter Egg Hunt Easter Sunday. Contact Margie for more information. Council members will be installed at the worship services held February 23/24. John Kromm thanked Council members for their support and efforts while he was president. He will serve as vice president in 2013. Motion to adjourn by Brian Storm/Heather Engel. Motion carried. Respectfully, Karen Olson, Secretary

Are you interested in the choices we are making as a church family? Do you want your voice to be heard? Please read the articles on page 10 and plan to attend the “Follow-up Meeting to Discuss Grace’s Future” on Sunday, March 10, at 9:45 am in Fellowship Hall. Kindly mark your calendar and encourage others to attend as well.

Page 10: Grace Lutheran Church...2013/03/04  · Grace Lutheran Church 108 W. SOMO AVENUE TOMAHAWK, WISCONSIN 54487 715 453-4066 Regular Weekly Worship Services Saturday 5:00 pm - Sunday 8:30

Thank you to all who participated in our first open forum to begin to gather congregational input on Grace’s future direction. The feedback we received was valuable and helpful. Following is a sample of the replies:

1) Some of the areas identified as positive about our current ministries at Grace included the friendliness of the congregation and willingness to offer support and respond to needs; the PPP Guys; Sunday School and kids’ presentations in church; Confirmation; Adult Bible Study; Milestone Ministries; fellowship time; outreach in community; cross-generational South Africa travelers; great secretaries and pastor; Wilderness trips; Camp and NYG opportu-nities; Outdoor Worship; projection in worship; music (Contemporary Choir, Cantata, Bell Choir); CIA; and Memory Tree, to name some.

2) Areas needing support/resources/attention included “communication and coordination among ministries,” “clear and accountable delegation of job duties” (both are topics on the agenda for the Leadership Retreat on April 6); fix up the youth room; more youth lock-ins; more service in the community; and service trips. If we do have two pastors, one needs to be the senior pastor; importance of visitation; more focus on Grace and Tomahawk; and the need for a youth director/facilitator/coordinator.

The purpose of the Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) is “to enrich the ministry of Grace by envisioning its future and by actively looking for ways to enhance the effectiveness of the im-age, program, building, organization, and relationships of this congregation.” The LRPC has been asked by the Church Council to assist in identifying our needs and to suggest what re-sources would be necessary to support those needs. In order to fulfill these assignments, we want to give the congregation ample opportunity to address our needs.

Follow up Meeting to Discuss Grace’s Future March 10 at 9:45 am—Fellowship Hall

As promised, to allow more time for discussion of our needs, a follow-up meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, at 9:45 am in the Fellowship Hall. At this meeting the Long Range Plan-ning Committee will: 1) Summarize the input from the brief session that preceded the annual meeting. 2) Explain some of the staffing possibilities, as discussed with Pastor Joy Mortensen-Wiebe, As-

sociate with the Bishop of our Synod. 3) Seek additional input to help determine our future staffing needs. We invite the congregation to come and share your thoughts. This input will be taken into consid-eration to develop staffing recommendations. The format of this meeting will be a large group set-ting to allow for conversation, rather than the small group process used to collect initial thoughts at the previous meeting. If you can’t make the meeting but have something to share, please contact a member of the Long Range Planning Committee: Steve Heikkinen, Sherry Clements, Dale Elliott, Mindy Gabrich, Patti Gaedtke, Forrest Gibeault, John Kromm, Judy Schlinkmann, Karen Torkelson

Calling All Interested in Becoming New Members of Grace!

Would you like to become a member of Grace Lutheran? Do you know someone who may be interested in becoming a member of Grace? Pastor Mark and Pastor Karla invite all those interested in becoming members of Grace to learn about the history of Grace, the ELCA, Grace’s vision for discipleship (following Jesus), its ministries, and, of course, its fellowship!

The spring new member schedule is: Sunday, April 7: Lunch at 12:00 noon — We will introduce the staff of Grace and learn about the history

of Grace, our greater-church relationship with the ELCA, and Grace’s Mission and Vision.

Sunday, April 14: Discipleship session at 9:40 am — We will discuss what it means to be a disciple of Christ—a follower of Jesus.

Sunday, April 21: Ministry session at 9:40 am — We will discuss the ministries of Grace, and the minis-try of your own life and its impact on your yourself, your family, the community and the world.

Sunday, April 28: Evening meal at 5:00 pm with sponsors. Sunday, May 5: Installation of new members during 8:30 am worship— We will officially wel-

come you and your family into the family of Grace Lutheran. Your sponsor (member of Grace) will introduce you and your family during the worship service.

All current members of Grace are invited to refresh and renew their understanding of Grace – its ministries and beliefs – by attending any or all of the sessions. Attendance at all sessions is not mandatory for becoming a member. Rather, it is a way to connect and learn together about each other, about Grace, and about Grace’s ministries. All learning sessions are open to everyone, and new members are encouraged to attend. All mem-bers are invited to the welcoming worship service on Sunday, May 5, 2013. If you are interested in becoming a member, or would like to sponsor a new member or family, please call Debbie Hetzel at the church office, so that preparations can be made accordingly. We look forward to seeing you!

!! Leadership Retreat to Support Grace’s Future

April 6 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in Fellowship Hall To begin implementing what we hear and discern, this year’s Leadership Retreat will be Saturday, April 6, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. At this meeting, a group working with the Long Range Planning Committee will: 1) Summarize the input from the March 10th meeting and how this process of congregational listening and discerning can be instilled into the life of Grace Lutheran. 2) Explain the ELCA’s request and resources for congregations to begin, develop, review, or redefine their unique mission plans, and Pastor Joy Mortensen-Wiebe’s assistance with this as both Associate with the Bishop of our Synod and our Synod’s Director of Evangelical Mission. 3) Guide participants in this retreat to begin structuring a process that addresses the areas of Grace’s life needing support/resources/attention as identified at the first open forum— including coordination of ministries; clarifying responsibilities and accountability across the organization; and communication among ministry areas as well as with the congregation.

Busy 6th and 7th Graders

Pastor Mark's After-School class visited our Tomahawk Food Pantry at the Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 13. They learned that over 2,000 youth and adults are helped each year by this organization. Donated items were brought from our Grace congregation and from the students themselves. The young people role- played the process the volunteers go through to serve people and had the interesting jobs of checking dates and stacking the donated food.

Grace adults learning right along with the class were Patti Gaedtke, Brenda Marcks, Bill Sparr, and Mark Von Schrader. A visit to Krueger Funeral is being planned for April. Bill Sparr
