Executive Summary
The digital and mobile sector is set to boom over the next twelve months as many organisations carry out user experience, online and transformation projects. Sectors set to grow include banking and finance, education, pure online and energy and utilities as large scale digital transformation projects are still ongoing. Some projects surrounding IoT have started to go live in the energy and utilities sector, however these haven’t had a major impact as yet. We expect to see more developments in this area in the 2015/2016 financial year. There is strong movement in the market from banks as they seek to build internal digital teams. Additionally, the start-up space continues to grow year-on-year, particularly in Melbourne.
The Greythorn survey found that 61% intend to change jobs in the next 12 months, indicating a buoyant market. Professionals working in this space are also the most satisfied in their current roles with 40% stating they were ‘very engaged’. These statistics seem to be contradictory but are most likely signs of a contract driven market that is more transient than traditional markets.
Skills in demand are set to include Android and iOS developers, however there will also be a surge in JavaScript MV* framework popularity and an increase in demand for Service Design and UX professionals.
Trends within this sector show a growth in demand of Scaled Agile/SAFe within modern Engineering and Product development environments. Larger organisations are moving towards better build and release environments with DevOps and CI/CD commonplace in mature environments.
Native Mobile also continues to be popular amongst the larger blue-chips, with SME’s opting for Responsive Web apps. All signs point towards a skills shortage, particularly in UX/Design and development across multiple languages. The lack of good developers means clients need to react quickly when they meet one and be prepared to pay market rates. Job seekers also value flexible working opportunities, currently only offered to 36% within the digital/mobile space and clients should consider what other options they can offer to secure top candidates, outside of rates.
One of the major challenges in this sector has been large corporations paying above market rate and driving prices up across the board. The Greythorn survey found that half of jobseekers were expecting rates to continue to increase over the next 12 months. However, although there may be a slight increase in-line with inflation, we now expect rates to begin to stabilise on the whole. In-demand Engineers and Designers have already enjoyed an aggressive increase in pay over the last 12-24 months and we expect this to plateau over the next 12 months.
Developers looking to secure work will need to ensure they have a good portfolio. Most modern teams are operating in an Iterative/Agile fashion; employers are always looking for people that are collaborative and highly competent.
