    We build strong kids, strong

    families, strong communities.

The mission of the Marietta Family YMCA and Reno Wellness Campus is to promote and inspire life-long development for children, adults and families through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The Y achieves this through a broad range of activities that serve a community rich in racial, religious, ethnic, and economic diversity.

So, what is the YMCA’s Secret?

Put simply, it’s a powerful combination of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Forever mission driven, the YMCA exists to mold the kind of people who care about each other, who are firm in their own sense of worth, who try to foster respect, and who take responsibility for their own health, well being, development and knowledge and help others to achieve the same. Through the many programs, experiences and opportunities here at the Y, we encourage all to participate.

    Code of Conduct

Our YMCA embraces the core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility. All individuals are expected to conduct themselves with the character, welfare, best interests, and policies of our YMCA. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the premises and revocation of membership privileges.

Marietta Family YMCA – Board of Directors The YMCA is governed by a Board of Directors. Members volunteer their time and knowledge to assist in helping guide and direct efforts of the Y. Board members represent sectors of corporate, private, civic and public entities. They also give appropriate leadership to carry out the work of the Y, implement policies of the organization, help achieve corporate goals and objectives. Staff and volunteer leaders work jointly to meet the goals and corporate objectives of the Association; this relationship reflects in policy formulation, determination, interpretation, and execution. We are proud of our Board Members:

Karen Weaver, President Walt Brothers, Vice President Matt Evans, Treasurer Fred Smith, Secretary

Tom Betz, Tammie Bobbitt , Walt Brothers, Al ice Chapman, Jerry Donahue, Matt Evans, Richard Murdock, Fred Smith, Larry Unroe, Karen Weaver

A Message from our Chief Volunteer Officer... Dear YMCA members and friends, As I write this, the March weather is becoming sunny and warm; a sure sign that spring is here. This spring the YMCA is in a state of transition. In February our Executive Director Al Miller retired. Al poured his heart and soul into the YMCA for many years, and we hope he enjoys his retirement. With change comes opportunity; to learn, to grow, to look at things in a different way. We're using this opportunity to rethink what we do and how we do it, and we will be stronger for it. Our Acting Director Karen Shaner is leading our staff, and we are already seeing a great spirit of innovation and dedication. We plan to take our time selecting a new leader; confident in the talents, knowledge and experience of our staff. They are greatly responsible for our success. One of my favorite quotes is by Winston Churchill, "A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty." We are optimists at the Y. Where else can you join, play, donate, and volunteer with such impact? Karen Weaver Chief Volunteer Officer

Marietta Family YMCA 2010 SPRING SUMMER

Come be a part of fun and history as we build a working replica of Fort Harmar on its 225th anniversary. Be part of the historic re-enactments, wooden boating, swimming, hikes in the woods, movie making, theater, an overnight camping trip, extraordinary arts and a camp banquet. Each week has a theme, but we do so much more than just what is themed. Regular row boating trips to Buckley Island (near the Williamstown Bridge), swimming, model making, turning the Incredible Community Playground in to a water park for a day, rocketry, flag football, capture the flag, and rugby (with a former professional player)...

Summer Adventure Camp (the best summer camp EVER!)

Week 6: July 12-16 Outdoor Adventures! Campers will increase their awareness of local resources and their importance to our water-shed. Adventures will include exploring unique ecological and cultural sites by visiting nearby Kris Mar Woods, Kroger Wetlands, and Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Ref-uge. This week will also include crime scene investigation in Kris-Mar Woods. Week 7: July 19-23 River Adventures!

Explore the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers in handcrafted wooden boats and canoes. This week will include an overnight camping trip along the Muskingum River in Lowell.

Week 8: July 26-30 Water, Water Everywhere!

We will celebrate one of our most precious resources through a series of water games and activities. Activities include rocket launching, catapulting, spraying, and turning the In-credible Community Playground into a water park for a day.

Week 9: Aug. 2-6 Extraordinary Arts! We will explore a wide range of artistic en-deavors. Visual and performance art will both be part of the mix. We will also finish the camp movie and celebrate with our families during an end-of-camp potluck banquet on Friday August 6.

Week 10: Aug. 9-13 Final Hurrah!!! We put it all together this week, recognizing all projects and personal development achieved. We will play lots of field games and continue camp adventures such as exploring the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers by boat and swimming in the YMCA pool.

Week 1: June 7-11 Team-building Challenges! Learn to engage in healthy behavior by exploring the physical, mental and spiri-tual parts of ourselves and others. Visit the Valley View Baptist rope challenge course. The Seventh Annual Pet Show is part of camp on Saturday, June 12th.

    Week 2: June 14-18 What's Fort Harmar?

Campers will work together creating models of Fort Harmer to prepare for building a larger construction on the fort's 225th anniversary. This fort was built in 1785 where Harmer Elementary School now stands.

Week 3: June 21-25 Building Fort Harmar! Working together, we will embark on the construction of a 22' x 22' working model of Fort Harmer to be completed in time for the Fri-day, July 2nd U.S. Revolutionary Celebration with authentic re-enactors. Week 4: June 28-July 2 Celebrating Fort Harmar!

While some campers put finishing touches on Fort Harmer, others will develop skits and create costumes for the July 2 celebration. Week 5: July 5-9 Theater and Movie Making!

Campers have the opportunity to write, create and produce their own digital movies under the supervision of experi-enced local filmmakers.

The YMCA uses the National Alliance of Youth Sports Start Smart program materials. The goal is to work with parents and children together and provide training and materials so the parents may continue working with their children at home. As the chil-dren develop an understanding of base running and fielding, the program will progress toward “games”. The primary purpose, however, is in-troduction to t-ball through the character traits of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility and socialization in working and playing with others. The YMCA’s Preschool Aquatics Program involves

step-by-step instruction of swimming and water

safety skills which develops children’s confidence.

Some classes will use floatation belts.

    Parent/Child & Preschool

    Skips: Parent/Child 6 mo - 2 years

Kids will work on the front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl. This class prepares the student for the Youth Progressive Swim Program.

Children adjust to the water by gradually putting their faces in the water. Students will also learn how to float on their backs and paddle in the water without assis-tance.

Children will be introduced to swimming with their face in the water. In addition, they will start to work without a fun-belt.

Children will work on the front crawl with rhythmic breathing and be introduced to back crawl. The majority of the children swim on their own without the aid of a fun belt.

We emphasize water safety and basic swim movements. Children adjust to the water by blowing bubbles and gradually putting their faces in the water.

This step-by-step progression of swimming and

safety skills enables a child to swim safely, enjoy the

water and use swimming as a lifetime fitness sport.

Class placement is determined by the student’s skills

and comfort level. We build on strengths and sup-

port personal development over the rate of their pro-

gression. Please note—as classes become more diffi-

cult, it may be necessary for your child to repeat a

class to effectively master the skills.

    Starfish: 3-5 year olds

    Pikes: 3-5 year olds

    Rays: 3-5 year olds

This class helps you and your child enjoy the water through game playing, sing-along, and blowing bubbles. We emphasize water safety, water adjustment skills, and basic swim movements.

    Polliwog

Youths, 6 years old & Up

    Eels: 3-5 year olds

Perch: Parent/Child 2-3 years This class is for beginner swimmers who may show some fear of the water. They will learn to get their face wet, to perform the front crawl arms, and to practice rhythmic breathing.

Guppy Children must be able to swim half the length of the pool while working on their front crawl with rotary breathing. They will also be introduced to the back crawl.

Minnow Children must be able to swim the length of the pool without stopping. They will work on endurance while using the front and back crawl.

Fish Kids work on perfecting front crawl and back crawl for 50 yards (2 lengths of the pool). They will be introduced to the breaststroke and butterfly kick.

Flying Fish Must be able to swim four lengths of the pool (100 yards) using front and back crawl. They will learn the breast and butterfly strokes.

Shark This class continues to refine the basics of the butterfly, back crawl, breaststroke, and freestyle strokes. They will learn flip turns and different diving skills.

    Special Note to Parents:

Parents are encouraged to register their child for classes in which they can be successful at their present ability levels. It is common for most children to re-peat a class more than once. This is due to the amount of material that needs to covered in each session, as well as each students unique approach to learning.
