PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

The snow is melting as I write this note and the swap meet

is in the record books as one of the coldest. However with

the friendship, food, great sales made, and bargains found,

we were able to earn enough money for another year of

touring, fun, and fellowship.

We are now lined up for a year of touring thanks to our tour

chairman Don Grabendike and all of the Wichita A mem-

bers who have volunteered to lead a tour in the coming

year. The strength of our club comes from all the members

who step up and help in one way or another, and I am proud

to be a part of this club.

The program for the March meeting will be presented by a

gentleman from outside of the club and will be on the sub-

ject of safety. As an extra incentive to attend this important

meeting, I have arranged for a door prize of a Model A air

conditioner to be awarded. You will need to be there to

receive this prize, and I will arrange for the free installation.

If you have any suggestions for future programs or activi-

ties please let me know.

Dennis Ellerman reminded the club of the Hileman’s bus tour and the Kan-sas White Way tour coming up and Linda Kibbe had infor-mation available on the Tulsa regional meet.

The next board meeting will be held at Chris Cushman’s on April 15th, 10:00 am., and the next regular club meeting will be on March 24th at Minisa. After a short break with refreshments provided by Linda Boivin, Orpha Eyres, Vicki Hildibrand, Ruth Anne Praeger, and Sandy Titus, tour ing chairperson, Don Grabendike conducted the annual tour planning for the upcoming year. Meeting adjourned. Dawna Ruggles, Secretary

Note From The Editor

Please note the newsletter deadlines I have published. I moved the month of May deadline up because of the club meeting falling on the third Monday of the month. June and July deadlines are earlier than usual because of the Tulsa Regional Meet and the MAFCA National Convention in July. Richard and I will be attending both meets. Thank you! September 18 - 25, 2014

Day 5 CB, L Dearborn, MI Henry Ford’s dream to be self-sufficient in his manu-facturing process was realized when the Rouge Factory started production in 1915. A city in itself, it has seen many transitions, and is now a lean and flexible manufacturing plant where the new Ford F-150s are assembled. Learn its history during a factory tour this morning. At Greenfield Village, experience 300 years of history as the sights, sounds and sensa-tions of America’s past come alive. Take a look inside Edison’s laboratory, or go for a ride in an authentic Model T. From Main Street to Work Farms, Liberty Craftworks to Railroad Junction, this will be a fun-filled celebration of the American experience.

Day 6 CB, L Fort Wayne, IN Get a taste of American ingenuity at Sechler’s Pickle factory, which began in 1914 and has expanded to offer 54 flavors of pickles! Lunch is followed by a tour of the Whetstone Woodenware facility, which start-ed 25 years ago when John Whetstone made an unbreakable wooden spoon for his wife. The quality wooden kitchen products keep coming as skilled craftsmen transform US maple into these utensils. When Warsaw Cut Glass Company opened its doors in 1911, master glass artisan painstakingly hand cut each piece of crystal on belt-driven wheels. Free-hand design made each piece a true original. Today it is one of the last American facilities practic-ing the art of cutting glass. The technique and equip-ment have remained unchanged and so has the product.

Day 7 CB Effingham, IL Travel to the charming town of Greenville, Ohio, this morning, home of the KitchenAid Stand Mixer since 1941. Visit the company’s museum and take a factory tour to see the dedication and craftsmanship that goes into every KitchenAid Stand Mixer. For 50 years, the Indy Hall of Fame Museum has been recognized as one of the world’s most notable muse-ums dedicated to auto racing. Exhibits include the 1911 winner of the inaugural Indy 500 race, many other rare cars, equipment and methods used for timing the race over the years, and additional racing memorabilia. Visit this American original this after-noon.

Day 1 L Springfield, IL Delve into the world of Henry Ford with a tour to where it all started, as well as to some of the best collections of automobiles and other Americana in the country. Drive into the Land of Lincoln today, with a stop for lunch in Kansas City.

Day 2 CB, L Kalamazoo, MI Wheeled objects, from cars to tractors to clocks, are gath-ered in four buildings in Peoria, Illinois, at the Wheels O’Time Museum. Special features, newly added in 2013, include a large workshop where restoration projects can be observed, including the 1931 Peoria Ahrens-Fox fire pumper, and an antique Ford dealership, with Ford vehi-cles and memorabilia collected by local Ford clubs. Later this morning, board the Spirit of Peoria for lunch and a scenic, narrated cruise along the Illinois River with its beautiful bluffs and interesting history.

Day 3 CB Kalamazoo, MI Spend today at the Gilmore Car Museum, one of the na-tion’s top car museums. See over 300 vehicles, featuring everything from Model A’s to Cadillacs, Pierce-Arrows to Duesenbergs, Studebakers to Chevrolets. On campus is the largest public museum dedicated to the Model A Ford. This 13,000-square-foot re-creation of a 1928 Ford dealer-ship includes a service bay and gas pumps, as well as rare examples such as Thomas Edison’s Model A, a school bus, mail truck, and tow-truck. This is truly a car-lover’s paradise.

Day 4 CB, L Dearborn, MI Michigan isn’t just about cars. Explore the estate of the cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg at the Kellogg Manor House. This Tudor revival style mansion is beautifully situated and recently restored to its 1925 condition. After lunch, begin our journey into the world of Henry Ford and more at the Henry Ford Museum. Explore the national treasures and artifacts that have helped shape America, including Lincoln’s chair and the Kennedy limousine. Spend the next two nights in Henry Ford’s hometown of Dearborn.

Day 8 CB, L Home

Today’s journey home includes a fabulous lunch

and a chance to share experiences from our tour.

BACK IN WICHITA AFTER 8 YEARS

Page 6 Rumbleseat Review March 2014

Dale Havercroft buys 68A Cabriolet in, Ankeny, Iowa

In 2006, Thurman “Dutch” Cheek, now deceased, offered his three Model A Cabriolets for sale. At that time Dale Haver-croft was interested in buying the 29 Mod-el. The day of the auction the bidding was fast and furious and Dale never got a bid in. An active member of the Central Iowa Model A Club, Doug Smith, won the bid and took the car home. Dale, grew up in the town of Par-tridge, Ks. A farming community near Hutchinson. Dale never owned a Model A but he has fond memories of a lady in Par-tridge, who regularly drove her Model A Tu-dor in the small town. He thought her car was “really cool” and always admired it. After graduation Dale left Partridge for Hutchinson where he attended Hutchinson Junior College. Next he moved to Wichita and enrolled at Wichita State. After gradua-tion he went to work in The Aircraft Industry and sometime later started to look for a com-pany he could buy. After an intense search he found two older gentlemen who were ready to retire and he bought the company, PMC Mfgr. Company. Dale owned and man-aged that company for 23 years before he sold out and retired. Dale always liked antique cars, without regard to make or model and knew that he wanted one someday. The first one he found happened to be a Model A Tudor. It wasn't a very good car so he didn't do much with it. Then he found Dick Doran in North Wichita who had a 29 Model A Pickup. Dick and his brother-in-law, Earl did restoration work so Dale bought the pickup and had them restore it. Next Dale found a 29 Model A Coupe and had Dick and Earl restore it. Then came a 31 Roadster also restored by the same team. Dale then found an A400 body in Colorado which he brought to Dick and Earl and had them use the original Tudor chassis

to complete the A400 Convertible Sedan. With 4, Model A's in his garage Dale came to the conclusion that he really liked the 29 models best. So, he sold the A400 and Roadster. His next quest was to find a Model 68A which was a 29 Cabriolet, to fit with his other 2, 29's, the Coupe and the Pickup. The 68A is a unique body produced in limited quantities, so the “pickins were slim.” He looked at one in Colorado and another in Missouri but neither met his standards. Then the Cabriolets owned by “Dutch” were to be sold at auction. Dale wanted the 29 Model but never got a chance to bid. Eight years passed and he never found another 68A Cabriolet but heard via “the grape vine” that Doug Smith in Ankeny, Ia. was ready to sell the car he bought in Wichita in 2006. He called Doug and sure enough he was ready to sell the car. Dale made arrange-ments to go see the car, a couple of weeks later, after the weather cleared up. Dale went to Iowa, bought the car and brought it home on a trailer. The car was pretty much the same as when Dale had seen it before, and had been driven less than a thousand miles. Now, Dale has 3, beautiful 29, Model A's in his garage, the Pickup, Coupe and Cab-riolet. We are very glad that Dale was finally able to buy the car that he pursued for so long. The 68A Cabriolet was one of the more expensive Model A's at $645. 17,764

were produced compared to 203,000, 29

Roadsters which sold for $435. RG

CAB-RI-O-LET: Definition and origination, The CABRIOLET originated in France in the eighteenth century. A light two

wheeled, one horse carriage with a folding

top, carried a passenger and the driver. This vehicle quickly replaced the heavier carriages

as the vehicle for hire in, Paris and London.

The CAB in taxicab is a shortening of the word Cabriolet.

Dale Havercroft with his 29 Model 68A Cabr iolet. 29 was the first year that the Cabriolet was offered. Landau bars fold in the middle when the top is lowered. The top and upholstery was installed by the legendary, Paul Matz in 1980 and still looks near per fect.

The 29 Cabriolet was a unique body. It has a concealed gas tank and a larger hood with the belt line extended all the way to the radiator.

The upper body, deck, belt and moulding, and sill mould-ing are all painted Black. The lower body is Andalusite Blue.
