Cool ideasDid you know…?Comic

Dear readers,

This edition of MOTOREX magazine fea-tures an interview with the charming and ex-tremely talented young female racing driverNatacha Gachnang from Switzerland. Hergarage-owner father and grandfather – bothloyal MOTOREX customers for decades –have been involved in motor sport as a hobbyfor a long time, and now Natacha intends notonly to continue the tradition, but to take itone step further by becoming a professionaldriver.

Tradition is very important to us atMOTOREX. Whenever my father man-aged to further improve one of the formulasfor our floor-care product range, he used to tell me proudly: “You never need to makethe cheapest product, but you should alwaysmake the best possible.” This philosophybrought him success, and the REX brand became extremely popular. I followed hisexample and quickly came to see how cor-rect and important this principle was in thedevelopment of our company and theMOTOREX brand. I am delighted to seethat the third generation is still continuing a tradition that has served us well since 1917– enthusiastically, without compromise andwith total dedication.

As the articles in this latest issue show, thedemands placed on research and develop-ment are assuming gigantic proportions.Satisfying these demands while remainingtrue to our tradition is something that ourworkforce is both proud and happy to do.

Now that’s clean:MOTOREX MOTO CLEAN 900The assumption that stubborn dirt can only be properly removedwith “harsh” cleaners is false. In fact, nonacidic, fast grease-dis-solving cleaners should be used for shining results. MOTOREX’sMOTO CLEAN 900 motorcycle cleaner has been providing op-timum, easy motorcycle cleaning for many years.

MOTO CLEAN 900 is now also available in an individually packaged 1-liter atom-izer as well as in the kit comprising a 1-liter atomizer with a sponge and drying cloth. The 1-liter refill bottle is being removed from the range, but MOTOREX MOTOCLEAN will remain available in practical large containers for use in motorcycleshops. Last but not least, the cleaner biodegrades quickly in compliance with the ap-plicable standards. Now that’s clean!

A strong character.

Natacha’s natural and direct approach

have won also her media favor.

R e p o r t R e p o r t

A healthy lifestyle and regular physical fit-

ness are an everyday part of Natacha’s life

as a racing driver.

Under contract: In addition to world cham-

pions (such as Michael Schumacher), Willi

Weber also manages young talents.Natacha Gachnang: Tough young talent

While other girls her age were still athome playing with dolls, Natacha Gach-nang was taking out the boys one after another on the kart tracks. That was in1994. The racing gene seems to be wellrooted in the Gachnang family. Hergrandfather, Georges Gachnang, com-peted in the Le Mans 24-hour race, herfather raced both hill climbs and slalomcourses as a hobby, and her cousin,Sébastien Buemi, started racing success-fully in the Formula BMW series this year.

MOTOREX magazine: “Natacha, do you think that a fascination and talent formotor sports can be hereditary?”Natacha Gachnang: “I think so. Our familyhas always been involved in motor sports. I got my first kart at age 5, and I’ve been a passionate driver ever since. Personally, I define talent as driving ability gainedthrough intensive training, and the sheerdetermination to be faster than the rest.”

MOTOREX magazine: “When was the firsttime you really believed you’d become aprofessional racing driver?”Natacha Gachnang: “I won my first Swisskart championship when I was 9, and mycareer continued from there step by stepwithout my really being aware of it.

I trained – a lot in fact, often more than100 days a year – competed in races, andsuddenly I would come to the point whereI could compete in a new category. Someday I’d like to make a living by racing, inthe same way that other people make a living in other careers. And that can onlymean going professional!”

MOTOREX magazine: “How long have youbeen racing in the Formula BMW series?”Natacha Gachnang: “Since 2003. Last year,BMW invited me and 59 other youngdrivers to take part in racing training. The instructor, Marc Surer, and the Juryseemed to be so impressed with my drivingabilities and second-best time that I wasimmediately awarded a grant for FormulaBMW.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Fortunately, FormulaBMW teaches you much more than justfast driving. How do you manage with allthe excitement going on around you?”Natacha Gachnang: “It’s a part of my work, and in fact, I find it a lot of fun. Nobody ever gets anywhere without commitment!”

MOTOREX magazine: “Willi Weber, who alsomanages the Schumacher brothers, has

signed a long-term contract with you. What does this mean for you?”Natacha Gachnang: “A stroke of luck!(laughs) Mr. Weber has a lot of experience, and he really knows the scene. On the onehand, I’m motivated by his expectations, and on the other, I’m reassured to knowI’m in the care of a professional.”

MOTOREX magazine: “The results from the current season could be better – whatdo you think?”Natacha Gachnang: “This is only my secondseason in Formula BMW, and I’m still inthe developing phase. The aim for 2004was “Get on to the circuit and win points”,and that’s pretty much exactly what I’vedone.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Race drivers hardlyever mention fear – how do you see thisas a woman?”Natacha Gachnang: “Everyone knows it’sbad to listen to fear. If you start to beafraid, you can’t be really fast any more.Caution is a different matter, of course. If you’re in the top three, for example, you automatically adopt a different, more cautious strategy, than when youwant to work your way up the field frombehind.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Do you have any role models in your career?”Natacha Gachnang: “Yes, especially theyounger talents who’ve hit it big withtheir own, sometimes wild style.”

MOTOREX magazine: “What’s your mosttypical character trait?”Natacha Gachnang: “Impatience with my-self. But it’s a healthy impatience thatkeeps me committed to moving ahead.”

MOTOREX magazine: “What do you do torelax when you’re not training?”Natacha Gachnang: “Spend time with myfamily. And of course I do sports. I love to climb, and I do endurance sports likecycling and fitness training. I also like tospend time with my friends in Aigle.”

Our readers and MOTOREX magazine

thank Natacha Gachnang for this inter-esting interview and wish her a successfulcareer as a racing driver.

A female race driver is one in 100.

“But it’s less my sex rather than my

talent, combined with that certain

something”, says Gachnang, that will

bring this young woman from Aigle

in French-speaking Switzerland to

the head of the pack.

17-year-old Natacha Gachnang has an

eye for what’s important in racing and an

impressive strength of character.

The use of identical cars gives everyone

the same chance and puts the emphasis

on driving skills and strategic ability.

Promoting young talent in Formula BMW

BMW’s history of successfully promotingyoung talent goes back to the 1970s. Formula1 driver Ralf Schumacher was once one of the drivers to benefit from the junior pro-gram.The talented young men and womenwho take part in Formula BMW races all havethe same goal: to become Formula 1 drivers.Since 1991, BMW and ADAC have jointly spon-sored formula series in Germany for youngtalent. Since 2002, the activities have been re-stricted to a single class: Formula BMW ADAC.The fact that the newcomers all drive identicalcars is intended not only to developing theirdriving abilities. In addition to “Driving tech-niques and tactics”, the training program con-sists of four additional modules,“Vehicledynamics and chassis setup”, “Fitness trainingand nutrition”, “Media training and PR” as wellas “Sponsorship and sports management”.

The vehicles are 140 hp, 455 kg (withoutdriver) BMW FB2 formula racers. The BMW monoposto was redesigned twoyears ago. It is considered to be extremely safe and is sold by BMW at a subsidized priceof Euro 55,900.

Modern tanks are usually coated inside.

Older tanks, however, can rust in contact

with H2O and oxygen.

VALVE GUARD replaces the lubricating

effect of lead in engines which used to

operate on leaded gasoline.

Protecting inner value: gasoline additivesof use. Oxidation and the associated var-nish or gum-like deposits are also pre-vented. FUEL STABILIZER is suitablefor all gasoline engines.

Protects valves and valve seats:MOTOREX VALVE GUARDValves in 4-cycle gasoline engines openand close up to several thousand times perminute. Before the introduction of un-leaded gasoline, the lead in the fuel raisedthe gasoline’s octane number, thus in-creasing resistance to knocking, and alsolubricated the valves and their seats, pro-tecting them from wear. Now, high resist-ance to knocking is achieved without leadin modern super gasoline with octanenumbers up to 100.

MOTOREX VALVE GUARD is the environmentally compatible way of pro-tecting the valves in all 4-cycle gasolineengines that date from the age of leadedgasoline. The integrated metering cham-ber in the 250 ml bottle (enough for 250 lof fuel!) enables easy and exact measure-ment of the additive while fueling.

Modern sulfur-free gasoline is a highlycomplex mixture which can change signifi-cantly after only a few months in a motor-cycle fuel tank. Condensate, reducedignitability, deposits and other undesiredcompounds can be prevented with a suit-able gasoline additive.

Eliminates condensate:MOTOREX POWER PLUSMotorcycle fuel systems are sensitive tocondensate, which develops in the tankdue to temperature fluctuations and canlead to running problems and corrosion, resulting in serious defects. MOTOREXPOWER PLUS binds condensate, pro-tecting and caring for the entire fuel sys-tem. It is suitable for all 2 and 4-cycle engines with or without catalytic convert-ers as well as for the normal commercialgasoline types.

Trouble-free winter storage:MOTOREX FUEL STABILIZERProfessionals recommend that motorcyclefuel tanks be filled completely for extendedperiods of non-use and for winter storage.Using MOTOREX FUEL STABILIZERmaintains the combustion accelerators inthe gasoline, thus ensuring ignitability of the fuel even after lengthy periods out

LowSAPS paves the way for Euro 4/5

The EGR/CRT system used in buses retains

over 95% of soot particles, thus making a

contribution to better air quality.

The new Euro 4 exhaust gas stan-

dard for trucks takes effect in Europe

next year. MOTOREX has already

held a seminar to communicate

all the relevant details of Euro 4/5

and presented its revolutionary

new MOTOREX FOCUS 4 motor oil.

The future limits of the Euro 4 standard require engines with modern exhaust after-treatment systems, some of which can onlycomply with the standard in combinationwith a new motor oil.

Exhaust aftertreatment systemsCurrently, two key methods of nitrogen oxide reduction are favored. The first vari-ant is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)already known from Euro 3 vehicles, inwhich a proportion of the exhaust gas flowis first cooled and then returned to thecombustion chamber. This reduces thecombustion temperature and the forma-tion of nitrogen oxides is suppressed.

The second variant is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). SCR injects a preciselycalculated quantity of a harmless urea/water solution into the exhaust gas flow. The urea combines with the nitrogen ox-ides in a chemical reaction and is convertedto harmless water and nitrogen. The ureasolution, marketed as AdBlue®, is carried in a separate tank in the vehicle and has tobe regularly refilled.

As both methods only reduce nitrogen oxides, further techniques are required tosimultaneously reduce soot emissions. TheCRT (Continuously Regenerating Trap)

consists of a combination of an oxidationcatalytic converter and a particle filter.

Solution: LowSAPS technologyThe combination of engine management and exhaust aftertreatment is in itself insuf-ficient to achieve the emissions objective. The motor oil also has to make a significantcontribution to achieving the goal. How-ever, the efficiency of aftertreatment is neg-atively affected by motor oil componentssuch as sulfur, phosphorus and sulfated ash(SAPS). The objective for motor oil devel-opers is therefore to drastically reduce thefractions of SAPS. However, these compo-nents are precisely the substances whichhave been used to date to lend the motor oilits desired properties. A new additive tech-nology was needed.

MOTOREX FOCUS 4 SAE 10W/40The new MOTOREX FOCUS 4 motor oil with LowSAPS technology for heavydiesel vehicles fulfills the stringent Euro 4exhaust gas standard. It was developed inclose cooperation with the engine manufac-turers and is officially approved to Daimler-Chrysler MB 228.51 and MAN 3477.

Tailor-made: PROFILE M-LA SAE 5W/30

The Euro standard has drastically tight-

ened emissions levels for diesel engines

over the last 10 years.

Motor oil as an engine construction factor:

the current limits cannot be achieved with-

out the proper motor oil.

motor oil, which satisfies the requirementsof MB 229.31 and is officially approved byDaimlerChrysler.

The facts speak for themselvesTailor-made for the latest generation ofDaimlerChrysler car diesel engines,MOTOREX PROFILE M-LA SAE5W/30 provides convincing results by offering the highest possible compatibilitywith modern exhaust gas aftertreatmentsystems, guaranteeing their long servicelife. As is usual for MOTOREX,PROFILE M-LA also provides totally reliable lubrication under all conditions. With the use of synthetic base fluids (syn-thetic performance) with their especiallylow evaporation loss (NOACK value),both particulate emissions and oil con-sumption can be noticeably reduced.

Today, mechanics can only play it safe byusing motor oils which have been officiallyapproved by engine manufacturers.

Ask your MOTOREX partner about the latest innovations fromMOTOREX.

Once again, motor oil specifications havechanged – from now on, motor oil also has to be totally compatible with the cur-rent generation of car diesel engines andtheir complex exhaust aftertreatment sys-tems. This requires a drastic reduction inthe use of ash-forming additives as well asadditives containing sulfur and phospho-rus (LowSAPS technology = Low SulfatedAsh, Phosphorus and Sulfur, see also p. 8).

MB 229.31: starting August 2004DaimlerChrysler’s specification MB229.31 for diesel engines produced fromAugust 2004 to fulfill the Euro 4 exhaustgas standard requires full compatibility of the motor oil with the exhaust gasaftertreatment system. Diesel Particle Fil-ters (DPF), such as are used by Daimler-Chrysler, are highly sensitive to the SAPSpreviously contained in modern motor oiladditives. New additives had to be devel-oped within the shortest possible time toprovide the desirable and proven proper-ties formerly offered by these SAPS.

MB 229.31 limits the fraction of sulfatedash to 0.8%, sulfur to 0.2% and phospho-rus to as low as 0.08%. Working closelywith the engine manufacturers and thepetrochemical industry, MOTOREX hastaken up this challenge and formulated itsPROFILE M-LA SAE 5W/30 high-tech

Good braking is half the raceUntil a few years ago, the emphasis wason the acceleration properties of vehicleswith increasingly powerful engines. In the wake of this development, how-ever, the braking power of a machine isalso increasingly the subject of interest.Powerful brakes are an absolute must, not only on the road, but particularly onthe racetrack. When it comes to brakes,Lothar Spiegler and his team are in theirelement.

Success through innovative ideasInnovative and marketable ideas are thebest foundation for the success of a com-pany. Spiegler Bremstechnik’s successstory began with an ingenious idea: In thelate 1980s, Lothar Spiegler developed the now near-legendary Stahlflex brakeline with its patented rotating fitting sys-tem for nearly all vehicles. One of themajor advantages of the steel-braidedbrake lines over rubber hoses is that theydo not expand under pressure, thus en-abling more precise braking for the firsttime. With a growing number of skilledemployees, the company has followed up this idea with innovative product de-velopments that range from the patented8-piston brake caliber to the unique brakedisk overhaul service.

From 100 to 0 km/h in a few metersFrom prototype to mass productionThe technical lead of Spiegler products is documented by numerous patents. With its ultramodern equipment and ISO 9001:2000 certification, this companycan successfully take on any challenge inbrake technology. It is also no surprise that Spiegler is a highly professional part-ner, especially in the bike industry and racing. These are also ideal conditions forthe recently sealed technical cooperationagreement with MOTOREX.

Also sought after as an originalequipment manufacturerSpiegler has now become a brand namethat is well known outside its native Ger-many for quality and professionalism inbrake technology. In addition, Spieglerenjoys increasing popularity and risingdemand worldwide, not only with dealersand motorcyclists, but also in industry, which is increasingly relying on the products from this Freiburg company intheir standard equipment.

Precision reaming to the micron (µm)In the testing department at the well-known machine tool manufacturer Tornosin Moutier (Canton of Berne) in Switzer-land, the competence of machinery, tool and lubricant manufacturers is con-stantly being put to the test under extremeconditions, yielding valuable synergy effects. For example, a shaft previouslyproduced by conventional means from INOX 1.4305 was not ground at the endof the machining process, but reamed instead. Having to comply with precisetolerances of within a micron, part machining time, tool life and of course dimensional accuracy were also of par-ticular interest.

One simple step: external reamingIn order to achieve tolerances of less than0.02 mm, an additional process – namelygrinding – was still necessary only a shorttime ago. This additional step entailedsignificant cost every time it was per-formed. Using MAPAL external reaming

tools, it proved possible to dispense withthis processing step entirely, enabling con-siderably faster throughput times. This isdue to the ingenious MAPAL machiningprinciple: all the cutting and machiningforces are absorbed by the tool through the guide shoes. Even very small diameterscan thus be machined with no variations in dimension or geometry. And all operationscan be performed in a single chuckingprocess!

A special latest-generation external ream-ing tool was used to process the INOX1.4305 shaft shown. This tool providesconvincing results, especially with its pre-cise machining of the diameters as well as the extremely close tolerances in paral-lelism and roundness. The tool has a pre-cisely adjustable cutting edge and severalguide shoes. Thanks to the well though-out tool concept, which also incorporates a special tool holder, the tool can be usedto maximum effect in automatic multiple-spindle lathes or sliding lathes, in our case,a Tornos Deco 20a.

New requirement:high-performance cutting oilThe lubrication specialists fromMOTOREX decided to use the high-per-formance SWISSCUT ORTHO NF-X(viscosity ISO 15) cutting oil for the re-quired machining operations. The currentformulation of MOTOREX ORTHONF-X has been a success in the market forover a year and has made an impressionwith its universal applicability. It is suitablefor machining all conventional materials,i.e. from steels that are difficult to cut, through nonferrous metals to cast parts. This is an absolute innovation in modernmachining technology and the result ofMOTOREX’s revolutionary vmax-Tech-nology (optimized cutting parameters and productivity).

This has been made possible by a carefullymatched package of additives, the activeagents of which take effect in differenttemperature ranges and are ideal for high-speed machining. A special high-pressureadditive assists the complex chemicalprocesses, thus bringing about the desiredresult. The cutting oil is free from chlorineand heavy metals and is supplied in threeISO viscosity grades: ISO 10, 15 and 22.

Convincing: the end resultEveryone was focusing particu-larly on the machined workpiece and the condition of the tool. Both were meticulously measured andevaluated. In the case of the manufacturedshaft, all the dimensional specificationswere adhered to or even improved upon.Even the high surface quality of Rz 1 wasconvincing for the specialists.

As regards the tool, the use of the high-quality ORTHO NF-X cut-ting oil considerably improved the useful life of the essential compo-nents, such as the cutting inserts. This is due to the application of an exceptionally thin and highly heat-resistant lubrication film between theguide shoes and the tool body.

The breakthrough of reaming as a sub-stitute machining step for grinding waspossible only in combination with the new fluid technology of MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X.

NF-X sets new standards in modern manu-

facturing technology.

Nowadays, it is an undisputed fact that virtually anything is technically

possible. However, an analysis of the costs of the machining stages quickly

turns up the areas that eat up profits. The recipe for success in modern-day

small parts turning is speed, precision and continuity.

High-precision reaming with ORTHO NF-X

True innovations can be achieved today only

in close cooperation between the manufac-

turers of machinery, tools and lubricants.

The required tolerances in the µm range

and all specifications were adhered to or

even improved on.

The advantages of reaming:• Replaces grinding

• Greater precision than turning

• Tolerances in the micron (µm) range

• Far more cost-effective than grinding

• More reliable production owing to reduced inspection times and lower scrap rate

MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X has

quickly made a name for itself in

the precision turning industry.

“Lupo” is the Italian word for wolf. A ratherrare specimen of the species has been sight-ed in and around Langenthal and occasion-ally in French-speaking Switzerland overrecent months. We’re talking of courseabout the LUPOREX – still a VW, but inunmistakable MOTOREX look.

The MOTOREX drum mounted on thelittle green car is particularly eyecatching;like a rocket it juts jauntily into the air, attracting the attention of everyone whosees it. There is a downside to this promo-tional gimmick though: the aerodynamicshave suffered a little and the car can nolonger boast a fuel consumption figure ofonly 3 liters per 100 km. In fact, with the200 liter drum whistling audibly in the wind, particularly on the motorway, fuel consump-tion jumps closer to 3 liters per 50 km!

Behind a watch face countless moving parts are hard at work. The more complexSwiss-made quality movements often have up to 100 lubricating points. Suitable lubri-cants are applied for the first time when the watch is assembled. The oil used mustcomply with the watch manufacturers’ strict requirements in all respects.

Thanks to their exemplary ageing behavior and flow properties in a precisely definedtemperature range, MOTOREX watch lubricants have been the product of choice formany years now. And, of course, it is extremely important to use the right lubricant tomaintain a watch. The quantities needed are minute: the average amount of lubricantused in a watch movement totals no more than half a milligram – or in other words, quality not quantity!

Did you know that . . .. . . even precision watches need lubrication?
