Lawrence Moore built his Ercildoune Inn in 1889 in what was a plantation house on the point of land overlooking the juncture of the St. Sebastian River and Indian River in Roseland. The area became known as Moore’s Point. Moore had been a farmer in the District of Columbia and had lived in Maryland and Virginia, according to the 1900 census. His hotel, made of cypress and pine, had a central lobby with a coquina fireplace. It was one-story, accommodating 35 guests. It was part of the Ercildoune Plantation, which included the Frost Proof Grove of 500 citrus trees. The grove was in good condition into the 1920s. There’s no indication why the plantation was named Ercildoune. There was an Ercildoune homestead in Australia, started by two Scottish brothers around 1835, that grew into a town at the base of Mount Ercildoune. The areas may have been
named for Thomas of Ercildoune a 13th century Scottish laird and reputed prophet. President Grover Cleveland was a popular guest at the Ercildoune Inn. Cleveland was said to sneak away from presidential duties and arrive by boat to spend a week or two,
hunting and fishing under an assumed name. Locals Frank Forster of Orchid and Paul Kroegel of Sebastian were his guides. Kroegel, a fierce defender of pelicans, in 1903 was named by President Theodore Roosevelt to be warden of nearby Pelican Island, which was made a federal reserve. The hotel closed around World War I and was
overtaken by squatters and moonshiners. The Moore’s Point land was originally settled by Ais Indians. Pottery shards can still be found along the river shore. A historical plaque can be found at the corner of U.S. 1 and Indian River Drive in Roseland.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while assessing the accuracy of Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast:• What happened to Erin Grall in 2010 was patently unfair. Just days before the Republican primary for state representative (District 29), Grall – the only candidate from Indian River County – was on the receiving end of a smear job by the Florida Chamber of Commerce. The Tallahassee-based organization did not endorse any candidate. Rather, it singled out Grall, a Vero Beach attorney, as the one not to vote for in what was a competitive, four-way race to succeed Ralph Poppell. In TV and radio commercials, as well as a mass mailing, the Florida Chamber cast Grall, who was making her first run at public office, as the “anti-business” candidate. Never mind the law firm Grall, Glenn & Grall is a community-minded small business and the Grall family is top shelf in terms of community respect. The Florida Chamber was so far off base about Grall,
it was laughable. Unfortunately, residents of Brevard County didn’t know any better. Grall finished second. Tom Goodson prevailed by just 280 votes. After the 2010 primary, I wondered if Grall – who has enormous potential as an elected official – would ever run for office again. The smear job had to leave a bitter taste in her mouth about politics. She sat out the elections in ’12 and ’14. Now 37 years old, Grall has decided to run for state representative in 2016. She’s hoping to succeed Debbie Mayfield, who cannot run again because of term limits. There’s a huge difference between the races in ’10 and ’16. The districts have been redrawn since she last ran. Whereas most of the voters resided in Brevard County in ’10, most

LEMMON DROPS: Lessons learned in brutal 2010 campaign will make Erin Grall a stronger candidate
will be in Indian River County in ’16. Thus far, Lange Sykes, also a Republican, is the only other candidate to file for the District 54 seat. There are sure to be others. So, how tough was it for Grall to get over the ’10 loss? “I think you learn a lot from adversity,” she said. “Clearly, the outcome wasn’t what our team wanted or expected, however, we will run a stronger campaign this time as a result. In 2010, my campaign was about ideas and solutions to make every Floridian’s life a little bit better. The same is true for this campaign.” • It’s good to see the County Commission has maintained the same level of tenacity in its fight against the Florida Municipal Power Agency, which balked at Vero Beach’s attempt to exit its contract. (The FMPA rejected a $52 million offer facilitated by Florida Power & Light.)• In searching eBay for Vero Beach-related items, my jaw dropped at the $20 asking price for a postcard of the former
Emlet’s Restaurant on U.S. 1. That one may test the law of supply and demand. (While the supply of Emlet’s postcards may be low, I’m thinking demand is even lower.) And then there’s the $27.97 asking price for a postcard of the former Ann Capri Motel in the Miracle Mile area.• A tip of the hat to Deputy Karrie Spooner, who retired after 30 years with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. She was the ultimate professional.• While dropping off a copy of last week’s issue at Binafif Aluminum, I noticed a book in the office that you don’t see every day: “The Philosophy of Aristotle.” When I raised an eyebrow, Kera Schraw, the office manager, explained owner Josh Binafif is a history buff. Very cool.• For posterity’s sake, I noted gas was selling for $1.81 a gallon last week at the Citgo station at U.S. 1 and County Road 510. Will the price ever be that low again?

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know. A piano tuner. Paul Kuvshinikov is the first one I had ever met. He grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania. His father was pastor of the local Russian Orthodox Church. At age 14, he started playing the piano. Eventually, he would play for his father’s congregation. So, what brought him to Sebastian 15 years ago? He was part of a company that made skydiving jumpsuits. While the jumpsuit endeavor didn’t work out, a door opened for Paul when he hired a piano technician. “He saw my fascination with the tuning,” Paul said. “I asked if he’d teach me.” He paid the technician for three sessions – at $95 a pop. Paul decided to start his own piano-tuning business in 2001.
Fast forward to today, and he has worked on more than 4,000 pianos in the region. For five years, he tuned pianos for concerts at the King Center in Melbourne. When asked about the nicest performer he dealt with, he didn’t hesitate. “Cyndi Lauper,” he said. (By the way, I forgot to ask Paul if REO Speedwagon ever performed at the King Center. Pop music fans
may recall the group’s 1978 album “You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can’t Tuna Fish.”) Paul, 42, earned a degree in interior architecture in 2010. He then added a master’s degree in nonprofit management and philanthropy. Although he’s still a full-time piano tuner, he volunteers in the fundraising department of the ARC of Indian River County. He sees himself being associated with ARC – a nonprofit dedicated to serving individuals with special needs – for a long time.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.452. “The Twilight Zone” (1982) Golden EarringMemory: A better song when you’re behind the wheel driving on the open road than, say, sitting at your desk at work.451. “I’m Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band)” (1973) Moody BluesMemory: When this song gets going, you can’t help but sing along. Would make my Top 20 for best song titles, too. 450. “Be True to Your School”(1963) Beach BoysMemory: Can today’s high school students relate to this song? I doubt it. Such innocent times back then.
Capacity at the Indian River County jail is 714 inmates. As far as the inmate population, what were the daily highs and lows in 2014? The high count was 495 on Sept. 18. The low count was 387 on Dec. 29.
