Up front with Jeff…
By the time you get this edition of the Cornerstone we will have completed two sermon series’. Time flies when you’re having fun. We have looked at the “I Ams” of Jesus and discovered how He revealed Himself to the world and to us. We examined how He was the ultimate role model of each object He used in His teaching. And we learned that we are His hands and His feet and should be shining His light in our families, at school and at work.
Then we went through a teaching on what the Bible says about the minister and the church people. Our Youth Minister, Joe Willis, did a great job of finishing off the month with his message, Four Moved by Love. He left us with the question, “How will we respond to the radical love of Jesus?” I hope each one of us will find a way or ways to live out that love in our community this week! Next up is a 4-part series on the ABC’s. That’s all I’m going to say about it. You’ll need to be here to check it out.
Our “Be a Man” group that is studying Men’s Fraternity material will already have finished four lessons in our study. I don’t know how the other men feel, but I always find each week to be inspiring. I learn ways I can be a better husband, a better father and a better man. I hope it also teaches me how to be a better minister. And speaking of that; thanks to those in our con-gregation who took the time to send cards, gifts, notes or other expressions of appreciation this past month. I/we are very grateful to be remembered and a little bit of encouragement can really help.
I too want to jump on the appreciation bandwagon with some things I appreciate:
My family—for their love & support.
Out staff—for the gusto they bring daily and for the way they carry out their duties with joy.
Our leaders—they have navigated the tenuous time of transition and now the start of a new ministry. I am grateful for their leadership, guidance, encouragement and support.
Our volunteers—have reminded me that we can’t do it w/o them. In fact, we can do very little w/o them! Those who trimmed up and cleaned-up the outside of our building, those who clean up the inside of our building, those who greet and serve and the list goes on and on. Thank you for your selfless attention and call to the duties at hand.
Our worship teams & orchestra—have been very patient with the new minister and have had to guess and assume and put songs and worship services together on the fly. I really appreciate all the extra efforts these teams have made to help coordinate our services.
And last, I’m just grateful to our Church. I feel like there is a desire for us all to participate in a spirit of unity, to become a strong team, to reach out to our community and to allow God to do here at LCC what He wants to do. Let’s help His kingdom grow!
Blessings, Jeff
YM UPDATE A Good Time of Year
This is a fun time of year! I was pleased to get to preach for both the Ainesis
youth gathering last week and for our Sunday services this past weekend as
well. If you were there, and you had the characters in my sermon figured out
before I revealed their identities, you did a good job of not blurting out the
answer until the end. Thanks! And as we transition sports seasons as well, say-
ing good bye to our outdoor activities of golf, football, cross country, marching
band, and jr. high baseball and look to the indoor seasons for a few months of
round ball, we start thinking of warm things, like hot cocoa and pumpkin pie.
(I’m also eagerly awaiting the yearly release of Thanksgiving Blend at S-bux!).
Along those lines, most of our Harvest Party is held indoors, with the obvious
exceptions being the maze and the hayrack rides. It’s a really fun scene! Get
involved! Call me (before I call you) if you can man a carnival game (because I’ll
be on the phone this week to fill my roster ;-) ).
Thanksgiving and Black Friday are right around the corner, too. To get us in the
holiday spirit, Operation Christmas Child 2013 is going on now! We hope to
collect 75 gift boxes to bless little kids across the globe with the gift of
Christmas. There are a few empty boxes at the church if you need one. Simply
fill a shoe box with gift items and bring it back to the church by November 17.
For more information, see www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/
veggietales/.
The Fall Harvest Party returns again as one of our premiere outreach events
for kids and their families. On Thursday Oct 31, from 6-8 pm, we open our
church doors to the community to come in and have some fun. Mostly treats,
very few tricks. We’ll again feature our carnival games, free food, cake walk,
hayrack rides, and hopefully a few other new elements. You can help out in a
number of ways. We’re in need of candy, personnel, and baked goods! If you’d
like to help out in any of these ways, please contact one of our office staff or
track me down.
The Illinois Christian Teen Convention is November 15-16 for all high school
students. Guys, you really shouldn’t miss this event this year. ICTC will feature
Bob Goff, author of Love Does, and spoken-word artist Carlos Whitaker. We’ll
also visit our friends at Inner City Mission. Cost is $95, which covers event
registration and hotel, until Nov. 6.
In a very short amount of time, we’ll begin planning for the 2014 calendar year
of all of our ministry rotation calendars. If you’re in service here now or you’ve
helped out in one of these areas before, please prayerfully consider re-upping
or rejoining our youth ministry.
Peace, Joe

FOOD PANTRY NEWS
We served 14 families on Monday, October 14, and 16 families on
Monday, October 21. A big thanks to the Nelson family for hosting a
“scavenger hunt” for food! What a creative way to collect food for the
Pantry—sounds like a lot of fun! The Cub Scouts had a food drive this
past weekend, and our Octoberfest for food drive is continuing thru
Thursday.
Our shelves should be well stocked for the upcoming holiday season.
The Pantry’s current needs are tuna, canned chicken, sugar, and paper
towels.
There a lot of empty blanks on the Volunteer Sign-up Sheet. As one
of our volunteers said, it a “tiny little thing that is such a help to others.”
P.S. A big thanks to Zach and Trevor Frost for helping their grand-
parents, Earl and Diane, unload the trailer every month!
