Regarding: COVID – 19The health and safety of our students is paramount. I encourage all parents to stay informed via our school and The NSW Department of Education. Our school is implementing safety measures and preventative health measures such as hand washing and surface cleaning. We are following social distancing requirements by not holding assemblies, excursions, inter-school sport and other whole school events.Monies held for cancelled or postponed activities will be refunded in full.If students are unwell with a possible infectious illness, they should remain home until symptoms resolve and seek advice from a medical practitioner. While at home remind your children to cover their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze, and wash their hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. They should also avoid unnecessary contact with peers. We will continue to keep you informed to the best of our ability while we support students, staff and parents through this event. Do not hesitate to contact myself at the school if you have any questions or concerns.

Principals reportCongratulations to The Henry Lawson High School who are one of twenty-one schools selected to participate in the Local Schools for Local Industry - Entrepreneurial In Curriculum Program initiative that is proudly funded by the NSW Government. The program includes a professional learning workshop for teachers and identifies local industry and external stakeholders to engage with students. The program celebrates innovation, creative problem solving and entrepreneurship that culminates in a state wide competition. The Henry Lawson High School is delivering an entrepreneuring elective led by teacher Mrs Griffiths.

It was great to have Ms Steph Cooke MP visit the school to recognise and celebrate our inclusion in the program. It was amazing, but not surprising, to see so many of our students compete at the Western Region swimming trials. Our school and community are very proud to have such a big team qualify for the State Combined High Schools carnival in Sydney. Well done to everyone involved.

COVID-19 headspace Dubbo special edition newsletter - march 2020

how to cope with the stress related to novel coronavirus

This information is for young people affected by stress related to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). It can feel stressful and overwhelming during an event like the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and we can all be affected differently. You might feel overwhelmed by the information, conversations and the increased levels of stress in your community. It can be hard to know what information to trust especially in a situation where things are changing so quickly. It can be helpful to keep up-to-date but it’s also okay to switch off from the 24 hour media cycle if this is getting too much.

During this time some things in your life may be affected by attempts to contain the spread of the virus. You may have been looking forward to a gig or a trip that’s been cancelled. You may be affected by school, uni or your workplace temporarily closing. Or you may have a loved one who is directly affected by the virus.

It’s important to find the right level or type of support for you. And keep in mind that the type of support you may need can change as time passes. For many people staying connected to family and friends/loved ones is important.

Tips to maintain a healthy headspace during this time:

Be mindful of exposure to information through stories, traditional and social media. It can be helpful to take a break from the 24-hour news cycle.

Do things that make you feel physically and emotionally safe, and be with those who are helpful to your wellbeing

Engage in activities that promote a sense of calm and feeling grounded (use of alcohol and other drugs can be counterproductive with this).

Our 7 tips for a healthy headspace demonstrate simple and effective things that can help people to create and maintain a healthy headspace, irrespective of whether they have been affected by COVID-19 or not.

It can help to talk with a trusted adult if it all feels a bit much.

DUBBO WETHER CHALLENGELast Tuesday, a team of Year 8 students travelled to Dubbo TAFE to participate in a workshop on the wool industry. Students practised the correct husbandry skills needed for handling and feeding seven wethers, which were kindly donated to our school from Egelabra Merino Stud, Warren. Over 30 schools have received sheep that they will be responsible for until the wether challenge competition. The schools will break in their sheep to lead on a halter, so they can be judged for their wool and meat qualities. They will then rank the sheep according to their commercial value. When the students return to Dubbo for the wether challenge in August, they will compete in a junior judging competition for wool and another for assessing Merino sheep. Students have attended two workshops to train for these classes. The students and teachers were given a very comprehensive explanation and demonstration on how to judge wool samples and Merino sheep. When assessing wool in a junior judging competition the students need to visually appraise and score the wool based on trueness to breed, uniformity, soundness, handle, colour, density, character, evenness, top and noil. These terms are mostly new for the students and it was important that the presenters explained what to look for in the fleeces, and showed fleeces that represented different grades for each characteristic. The students have been enthusiastically practising breaking in of the wethers for halter training and also have assisted with weighing the sheep to help assess their weight gain.To keep the wethers in an ideal condition we are asking if anyone has any feed oats or cereal hay with grain that we could purchase at a reasonable price. Ideally, 1 tonne of oats and 1 bale should be sufficient for preparing the wethers.

Thanking you

Mrs Baker

Grenfell Soccer

Unfortunately, due to the current situation with COVID-19, Grenfell Soccer has decided to inactivate and suspend online registrations and cancel the face to face session on 25 March at Grenfell Public School. In light of all the information we have available, currently the season will go ahead. If all suspensions are lifted when mentioned, the season will continue as normal. However as we are in unknown territory, this decision is out of our hands. Please email [email protected] of your intentions to play soccer this season so you can be added to our email list and be kept up to date with all information as it becomes available. Registration will be extended as needed once we get the all clear to go ahead.

Trash to Treasure is designed to equip students with the understanding, skills, values and attitudes to be active citizens making environmentally conscious decisions in society. Students will be provided with a variety of practical and theoretical experiences to build knowledge and skills around waste management and recycling. They will work collaboratively and take responsibility for designing innovative and creative ways of reducing waste that ends up in local landfill. In week 2, we visited the Weddin Waste Depot with Brendan Hayes, Director of Environmental Services Weddin Shire Council. He gave us a tour of the facility and discussed local landfill and recycling issues. Some groups have started creating their projects and are well underway to reducing landfill!

The goal of the Video Project is to allow students to find a voice through video production. Students engage with an idea of interest and develop this through pre-production skills, including story-boarding to plan their work, production (filming) and post production (editing). Working in small groups, the students are exploring a diversity of themes in their project including a video presenting the school, humorous videos about stress relief and the things that annoy them, and films about the artistic process and welfare issues.

In the first six weeks of the project students have been introduced to the cameras, to planning techniques and shot types, They are currently learning to edit a small video using footage shot by the students at the swimming carnival. Their projects are evolving through the planning process and some students have started collecting their videos to edit.

PROJECT ELECTIVES Stage 5 STEM have been digging into research around climatic problems that face Grenfell farmers. Using data from the CSIRO, they have clued in to significant climatic changes that are and will continue to be a problem for our farmers. Students have made some informative presentations on these issues and are keen to communicate their findings with the community.

Harrison Starr came to speak to the class in Week 7 about a solution his family are pursuing around combating drought conditions; regenerative agriculture. The class gained some insight into what is already happening now within the industry. Their next steps will be to start surveying and interviewing other industry spokespeople before planning their own solutions around feeding an ever-growing population.

2020 THLHS Spelling BeeDue to unforeseeable circumstances, round 2 of the spelling bee for Year 8 has been cancelled. Miss Hunter had the opportunity to run the second round for Year 7 in week 7, allowing them to flex their spelling

skills within the competition. Because we will not be able to run our championship assembly the champion spellers for Year 7 and 8 have been determined from the first 2 rounds.Year 7 Champions Year 8 ChampionsAmelia Donnelly Isabelle AbbeyAmber Taylor Mia BatemanNakarla Hardy Jake TrothSebastian Browne Emerson SquiresSpencer Mehrton Brayden DowdThomas Murphy Hamish bakerBrayden SmithBraeden Leibick

Our Year 8 champions have been determined by round one, each of these champions spelt every word correctly. Our Year 7 champions were our top spellers of round 2. The spelling bee shows students the importance of practising their skills, which is a goal that they should be continuously working towards as their vocabulary expand. Everyone should be proud of their achievements and the dedication that they applied towards challenging themselves. Our next goals for both Year 7 and 8 in the library will be the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
