Principals reportLast week we celebrated SASS Recognition Week. SAS staff include administrative managers, administrative officers, library assistants, science and food technology assistants, school learning support officers, general assistants and farm assistants. SAS staff are the backbone of the great work being done in our school.

Our SAS staff play an important role in the school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter a school and are essential to maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and the community.

Our staff work in school offices, classrooms, libraries, laboratories, kitchens and maintaining and caring for school grounds and buildings. They are often the ones that tend to students when they unwell and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions. Our staff are in the front line with student learning, often working closely with targeted students that may have special needs or need extra support with a particular task. SAS staff are vital for school maintenance, the care of livestock and crops while also coordinating trades such as electricians and plumbers.

SASS Recognition Week is an opportunity for us, and the school community, to show our appreciation to these dedicated staff members who play such an important part in ensuring the smooth running of our school.

A big thank you to parents, students and staff who participated in the Zoom parent teacher interviews on Monday 24 August. It was a big success and provided a vital opportunity for us as a learning community to share ideas and thoughts and to discuss future goals and directions for each individual student. The process for electing our 2021 new school leaders has begun. Thank you to our Year 11 students who nominated and presented their videos for the school captain and vice-captain positions. The leadership opportunities in a post-Covid-19 world will be greater than ever before. A leadership group that promotes and celebrates each individual person’s qualities and attributes and leads good quality mateship and community in the classroom and playground will make a difference. Leaders who are passionate about the school and want to foster positive relationships will be forever remembered as great captains and vice captains. It is a busy time for our Year 10 students as they look deeply into their course options for 2021. Thank you to parents who Zoom-ed into our subject selection information evening recently. The follow-up interviews with students and parents are currently in the process to formalise each student’s individual Year 10 into Year 11 subject and transition plan. This is an exciting time for our Year 10 students as they plan their short-term and long-term goals. Any questions on Year 10 into Year 11 subject selection, please contact the school.I have been incredibly impressed with our Year 12 Design and Technology and Visual Arts final projects. The workmanship, authenticity and originality are very impressive. It is a credit to all involve, and we are looking forward to the final displays.

Exploring theatre!Year 11 Standard English have been busy analysing the Australian play, Cosi, by Louis Nowra as a part of their close study of literature. Cosi is a ‘play within a play’, as it explores the process of the main character, Lewis, putting on the production Cosi Fan Tutte with his actors. Students have engaged in a range of activities to pull apart all the exciting, funny and interesting ideas in the play including concept mapping, creative writing and creating character profiles. Over the next two weeks students are working towards completing their writing portfolio on the play which includes a visual representation of the thematic ideas and characters, a creative writing response and analytical essay.

Student WelfareDuring LATS students from Years 9 to 12 will be watching a short video about consent and sex, the link to the video is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3nhM9UlJjc . Years 7 and 8 will be watching a short video about consent the link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3nhM9UlJjc. The idea behind these videos is to explain consent and the importance of consent.“consent is compared to making someone a cup of tea. ... It’s pretty simple: If you ask someone if they want a cup of tea and they say no, do not make them a cup of tea and do not force them to drink it “

YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHYLast Friday, Phoebe Heathcote and Braydon Dowd attended St Josephs Year 5/6 class to teach them about water sustainability and the importance of the Murray Darling Basin. The purpose of the visit was to assist students with their Kreative Koala project. In Year 8 geography, students are learning about water in the world and were able to share this knowledge and discuss the value of this precious resource.

Set amid the civil rights movement, this is the true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America’s space program. Before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of professionals worked as human computers, calculating the flight paths that would enable these historic achievements. Among these were a coterie of bright, talented African-American women. Segregated from their white counterparts, these coloured computers used pencil and paper to write the equations that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.Moving from World War II through NASA’s golden age, touching on the civil rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the women’s rights movement, Hidden Figures interweaves a rich history of mankind’s greatest adventure with the intimate stories of five courageous women whose work forever changed the world.
