LAWSON’S LATEST 6 MARCH 2020 TERM 1 WEEK 6 THE HENRY LAWSON HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE, ENCOURAGE, ACHIEVE 49 SOUTH STREET, GRENFELL NSW 2810 02 6343 1390 [email protected] PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Parent teacher interviews will be held on Monday 9 March from 4.00 to 6.00 pm in the school hall. Booking sheets have been sent home with your student. If you are unable to attend but would like to make an appointment to see your student’s teachers, please contact the office. ELEVEN YEARS STRAIGHT! Our Year 9/10 Science and Engineering Challenge team blitzed the competition for the 11th year running, over a decade of outstanding achievement to be proud of. On Tuesday, running on pure nerves and excitement, our students sunk their teeth in to their challenges. Our hovercraft team had the most difficult task – a new activity without ever making or controlling one. However, team effort and strong communication saw them smash the challenge out of the park with the fastest hovercraft on the day. Every team on each of the challenges faced new activities and worked extremely hard right up until the end of their challenges. This is why THLHS always do so well at the regional events; they never give up. Special mentions to our bridge team on getting past the super ingot – a great achievement and the only school to make it to the bridge buster. Through our persistence and hard work ethic we won the day on 1377 points, with Hennessy Catholic College coming in at a close second. Our Science and Engineering Challenge team would like to thank the great competition brought by the other schools on the day and to the hardworking Young Rotary and University of Newcastle for holding the event. We move on to zones to battle for our place in the state final later in the year.

Lions Youth of the Year. Public speaking is enough to bring the most confident of people to their knees, however Year 11 students Anna Hunt and Henry Best have proven they have the gift of speaking in public. Anna and Henry represented our school at the 2020 Lions Youth of the Year earlier this week. Following the private interviews, Anna and Henry addressed the impromptu questions.• How does social media affect the way we communicate today?• Do you think a rural high school education has prepared you for life after school? They then delivered their five minute prepared speeches.Anna’s topic was The Power of Positive Thinking whilst Henry’s topic was For the love of community. The judging panel were very impressed with the calibre of the entrants, with Anna being announced overall winner of the Lions Youth of the Year as well as the public speaking segment.Congratulations to both Anna and Henry. Anna will now go on to contest the zone finals later this year.

Opens Netball THLHS opens netball team traveled to Orange to compete in the Western Region Netball Trials. The girls faced some very competitive teams but thoroughly enjoyed the day out at the Orange PCYC netball courts. Unfortunately we were defeated by Orange High, Kelso High and Lithgow High. A big thank you to Trudy O’Byrne who assisted with transport and support on the sideline. Thanks also to Henry Best (team manager and motivator) and Faith White (head coach and selector). A great effort on the day girls and given the tough competition, you worked so hard as a team and played fairly. Thanks to Mrs Griffiths for nominating, preparing and training up this awesome team who should be proud of their strong defense on the day. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with these fine athletes. Mrs Troth

CAREERS NEWSSBAT Information SessionAre you in Years 9, 10 or 11? Do you want to start earning? Do you have a particular trade you are interested in? Are you interested in finding out about learning by doing a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT)?Our regional SBAT co-ordinator Mr Troy Kelly will be visiting our school on Wednesday 18 March (week 8). If you would like to know how this could be of benefit to you, come along to the information session.WHAT: SBAT Information SessionWHO: Years 9, 10 or 11 and their parentsWHEN: Wednesday 18 MarchTIME: 5.30pm (about 1 hour)PRESENTER: Mr Troy KellyWHERE: THLHS LibraryTroy Kelly will also be also be speaking at an Industry Breakfast on Thursday 19 March, where employers are invited to attend. Do you know an employer that you would like to invite along so that they can find out more information about employing an SBAT student? If so, see Ms McCulloch immediately to ensure they are invited.

Year 12 student Mea O’Byrne, is currently completing her School Based Traineeship in the office at The Henry Lawson High School. Ms McCulloch sat down with Mea to get her thoughts on SBAT. What are the benefits of doing an SBAT? From this experience I will receive a Certificate II in Business Services which can help me find jobs in many different areas such as administration assistant, legal receptionist, receptionist in general and many more. I have learnt new skills in many different areas such as answering phone calls and talking to people in a professional manner, management skills and I have also become more responsible. The SBAT is a two year period and by the completion of my SBAT I would have completed 700 hours and earned money while still enrolled at school. What are some of your duties? My duties include photocopying, laminating, designing signage and posters, answering phone calls, filing, using word and excel to create spreadsheets and much more. What advice could you give to a student considering this learning structure? If anyone is interested in learning new skills and working with other staff members, this is a great first step in the business industry. You have the opportunity to enjoy yourself and develop workplace relationships with adults.

Year 9 History - The Movements of Peoples. Over the last few weeks, these young historians have been investigating what major changes took place in Europe that influenced the birth of modern Australia. We have looked into how technological progress and social upheavals have led to the mass movement of people from all over the world. Students are discovering that many of us are here in Grenfell today as a result of gold rushes, convict labour, free settlement and colonisation. As we follow this chain of events the students are particularly curious about how we stumbled into the Great War, which is something to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Andrew Knight awarded Rural and Remote Scholarship!Andrew Knight - Year 12 2019 - has been awarded the prestigious Rural and Remote Scholarship from RuralBiz training. The $11,000 scholarship will cover the entire course costs for Andrew to complete a Diploma of Agriculture via Distance Education and is one of only two scholarships awarded in this category. As well as meeting the entry requirements, Andrew had to submit a 250 word document on how he saw farming in his future and how this course would help him achieve his goals.Mr Reg Kidd from RuralBiz was presenting a chemical users course at the school last week and took the opportunity to congratulate Andrew and encourage students to continue to study agriculture and apply for the scholarship in the future. Mr Kidd went on the explain that a career in agriculture is not just about traditional farming, but can diversify into so many different and varied career paths. Congratulations Andrew and we wish you all the best in your future studies.
