We have come to the end of a very busy term! I would like to thank the THLHS staff, students and parents for welcoming me so warmly and for making my transition into the school as smooth as possible. I continue to be excited for the coming terms and years ahead. A big congratulations to Tom Robinson. Tom won the 50m freestyle at the Combined High Schools Swimming Championships. This is the highest sporting achievement in the NSW State High School system. Well done Tom! Your school community is very proud.

Also a special mention to Niamh and George Mitton who also competed at the swimming championships. Well done!Anna Hunt attended the Western Regions trials last Friday for the Open Girls Football team. Having just returned from Junior Matilda’s representative duties, Anna’s fitness and skills shone through and was again named in the team to compete at the CHS Championships next term. Congratulations Anna and good luck at the carnival. Good luck to our cattle show team who are currently competing at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Stay tuned to our school’s social media over the holiday period to receive updates. Well done everyone and enjoy the learning experiences.

The Henry Lawson High School participates in the Share Our Space program. Our school grounds are open for the whole community to enjoy from 13 – 26 April including public holidays. I would like to thank all those responsible for making Friday’s athletics carnival a reality and no doubt, a great success. The school oval is in very good condition and obviously considerable effort has been put into ensuring the turf is well prepared. Parents, grandparents and friends were welcomed as they supported their favourite house. All students were encouraged to participate and to have plenty of water and sunscreen with them.

A reminder that ANZAC Day is on Thursday 25 April (The second Thursday of the school holidays). All students are most welcome in full school uniform to represent the school in the town march. Students attending the march are to assemble in Main Street near the Grenfell Record office at 10:30 am with main service to commence at 11 am. The dawn service commences at 5:45 am.A big thank you to the P&C who recently supported the school in purchasing Year 11 text books in Science, Maths and Business Studies. The P&C has also contributed to the school’s cattle program. The funding was used to purchase the materials used to build the cattle ramp and will also be used to purchase a new cattle crush. The positive partnership between parents and the school is vital for our ongoing success. Thanks again to our parents.School will resume for students on Tuesday 30 April. The school office will be open from Monday 29 April. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter, enjoy the two weeks break. If travelling over the holidays; do so safely. See you all next term.Aaron FlaggPrincipal

Tennis Wrap UpThe girls tennis team of Anna Hunt, Caphryse Lawler, Bridget Baker, Holly Gilbert and Annabella Taylor were unlucky to draw their first round against a very experienced Orange side. The girls played tremendously well, even winning a few games! Bridget Baker convincing won her game 6-2. The team from Orange, the staff and their spectators were all pleased with the sportsmanship demonstrated from our players. Both teams agreed that the games had been played with a positive spirit! Well done to all players involved. The boys team of Jesse Thomson-Jones, Connor Day, Adam Hewen, Angus Troth and Oliver Taylor won their first round against Forbes who were too intimidated by our boys to even field a team. Their second round was against Dubbo in Grenfell. Mrs Troth reports that a great day was had by all. Jesse came away with a convincing win and the rest of the games were played with enthusiasm. Dubbo ultimately won but everyone reported that they had enjoyed the day.Thank you to Mrs Troth who generously donated her time and car to take the boys team and thank you to Danny Joyce and the tennis committee for allowing us to use their facilities.

ANZAC DAY SERVICEOn Thursday 11 April, we held our ANZAC Day Remembrance Ceremony. Staff and students were joined by members of the Grenfell Sub-Branch of the RSL and members of the community to remember those who sacrificed their lives in past wars.

HSIE HAPPENINGSIt has been a busy term in HSIE. Here are some of the activities students were involved in:

Year 8 Geography - This term Year 8 have been studying the topic Water in the World. They have leant about the availability of water, the water cycle, water scarcity and the value of water. Recently they completed an activity looking at the amount of water that different countries have. Students were split into four teams representing the developing countries of Kenya and Bolivia and the developed countries of USA and Canada. Each country had to trade water resources. USA and Canada came out on top demonstrating how the different economic aspects affects water availability.

Year 9 Geography have been studying the topic Sustainable Biomes. They have studied the different types of biomes and how they provide food, fibres and fabrics to the world. Students created their own biome crops using different seeds and soil types. They then placed the crops into different climate situations, including temperature and different amounts of rainfall. Some students’ biomes grew, others did not. This highlighted that not all areas are capable of producing sustainable food sources for their population, which then creates other ongoing problems.

Year 10 Geography focused on environmental change and management. Students completed tasks concentrating on the human effects on the environment and what can be done to increase sustainability. Part of their learning included an excursion to Company Dam to complete field work activities. The focus was to investigate how the inclusion of the dam effected the surrounding environment.

Buckley ShieldA great day of Rugby league was hosted by Cowra High School on Tuesday 9 April. In the first round of the Buckley Shield, we were defeated by Blayney High School 34-8. Benji Reid and Marc O’Loughlin led the way in both attack and defence, Benji scoring two tries. Blayney advancing to round two.Cowra defeated Canowindra in the other round one game, qualifying Cowra to challenge Blayney. In a tight contest Blayney overcame Cowra to move onto round three.A friendly match between The Henry Lawson High School and Canowindra High School was played later in the day. It was an even contest with impressive play by Rhys Hughes, Lachlan Smith and Hayden Reid. Harrison Keppie began to organise his forwards and send them full steam ahead at Canowindra’s defence; he also nailed a sideline conversion. Josh Clarke and Lee Ryan made some quality leg tackles as Canowindra tried to run around our defensive line.Oliver Taylor sparked some exciting attack with fast footwork, scoring a great solo try. He topped off a point scoring hull with two conversions. Benji Reid (two tries) and Marc O’loughlin (one try) again lead the way. After a hard fought effort and a miscommunication with the scoreboard attendant, unfortunately Canowindra came away with the win.Sports Coach Adam Hewen was impressed with the teams resilience and sportsmanship on the field stating that “everyone tried really hard and played for their mates”.Mr Barclay was extremely impressed with the team manners and behaviour both and off the field.Thank you to Loaders Coaches for transporting our team on the day.
