Principal’s ReportThis week we celebrated SAS Recognition Week with a special morning tea. SAS staff include administrative managers, administrative officers, library assistants, science and food technology assistants, school learning support officers, general assistants and farm assistants. SAS staff are the backbone of the great work being done in our schools. Our SAS staff play an important role in the school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter a school and are essential to maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and the community.SAS staff work in school offices, classrooms, libraries, laboratories, kitchens and maintaining and caring for school grounds and buildings. They are often the ones that tend to students when they unwell and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions. SAS staff are in the front line with student learning often working closely with targeted students that may have special needs or just extra support with a particular taskSAS staff are vital for school maintenance, the care of livestock, crops while also coordinating trades such as electricians and plumbers. As the school principal, I am very aware of the valuable work SAS staff do every day of the school year. SAS Recognition Week is an opportunity for us, and the school community, to show our appreciation to these dedicated staff members who play such an important part in ensuring the smooth running of our school. Have a great week!Aaron FlaggPrincipal

Pizza and Pitch with Steph CookeOn Tuesday 27 August, a group of students accepted the invitation of our local state member, Steph Cooke to take part in Pizza and Pitch. After indulging in pizza, juice and flavoured milk, students had the opportunity to discuss current issues with sporting infrastructure within the Weddin Shire, what they believe needs improving or installing as well as making suggestions on what they believed would be beneficial for the youth of the Weddin Shire. Our thanks to Steph and her team for inviting our students to attend and for listening to their ideas.

Science and Engineering Challenge State FinalsTo do anything for ten years in a row is a pretty good feat, but to qualify for the Science and Engineering State Finals for ten years in a row is amazing - and that is just what our school has done. Congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 team who travelled to Newcastle earlier this week to compete. Results were mixed and we came away in fifth place on the day. Congratulations to the other schools involved and our thanks to Mr Amey and Mrs Taylor who stepped in at the last minute who accompanied our team.

Careers NewsTry-A-Trade (Year 9 and 10)Year 9 and 10 have been invited to Cowra Try-A-Trade next week. Try-A-Trade is an industry event that showcases the many trades in our region. It will have workshops and stalls manned by tradespeople experienced in their field. Students are invited to participate and interact with the 24 business and 40 exhibits and ask questions to further their own knowledge and understanding. We are happy to announce that Senior Pathways have funded the bus for this excursion and Cowra Lions Club are providing a free barbeque, so there is no cost to parents. If time permits however, we may stop for a quick drinks break at McDonalds on the way home. I would like to see all Year 9 and 10 participate in this event. Please return the note to the front office.WHAT: Cowra Try-A-TradeWHEN: Tuesday 3rd September, 2019WHERE: Cowra High SchoolTIME: 10.30 am bus leaves. Returns at 2.30pm.Work Experience – Year 10Dates for our next work experience are 9-13 December (inclusive). Please be organised with your paperwork.Year 12 UAC ApplicationsUAC applications are upon us. Please use your NESA number and your 4-digit pin number to begin your application. SRS-Schools Recommendation SchemeStudents are eligible for SRS. This is an early entry pathway that most universities participate in. Ensure you apply for this.EAS-Equity Access SchemeEquity Access Scheme is an important extra step that our students are eligible for to gain extra bonus points on entry into university. These points are associated with our location, being a rural and remote school, our size and distance from major centres. Students will need to upload the appropriate documentation to demonstrate their eligibility. (A letter from school to indicate your attendance.)There may be other categories students may apply for within EAS associated with disadvantage while doing the HSC. Appropriate documentation will be needed.ScholarshipsStudents are able to apply for Equity Scholarships that can be found on the UASC website. This is usually associated with students in receipt of Youth Allowance. I advise students (and parents) to apply for Centrelink benefits sooner rather than later to check your eligibility for Youth Allowance. Each university also has their own scholarship programs. Students need to go to their university website, look for scholarships and apply the filters to find scholarships relevant to their status. Grenfell CEF will also open for scholarship nominations next week – so ensure you apply. Please see Ms McCulloch for help in all of the above – before 30 September.

Weddin Mountain Challenge 2019During week 9, 18-20 September, our Year 9 students will take part in the annual Weddin Mountain Challenge. Once again, we will be joined by students from Sir Joseph Banks High School, our partner school in Revesby. It is hoped that these students will be our pen pals from last year so it will be great to catch up and get to know them a little better. Our program may be slightly different to that which we followed last year as we are always looking to try new ideas and may look to camp out at the mountains on Wednesday and Thursday nights, with our walk over the mountain on Thursday. With planning well underway, and to assist with this process, we would like to ask if there are any farmers in our community that may be shearing at this time and would be happy to host a visit from our city cousins. It will be a great opportunity for us to showcase the Weddin Shire and the benefits of living in a regional area. We would also like to invite any Year 9 parents to join us out at the mountains for both, or either, the camping and walk over the mountain. It is always lots of fun, and this time of the year, we are generally lucky with the weather. This year we would like to extend this invitation to any parents in our school community who would like to join us.More information will follow as we finalise details over the next few weeks. If anyone can assist with the farm visit, or any parents would like to book in for the camping, please contact Nicola Mitton at school, 6343 1390.
