Student of the Month Silver Assembly Awards - Thursday 28th February

Library News

Breakfast Club

This week our focus for PBL is on the first of our whole school expectations “Follow teacher instructions”. This comes under the core value Effective Learners.

At our Monday afternoon assembly, Mrs Cracknell asked our students about following teacher instructions. She explained to our students that they will not be asked to do something which is not outside their capabilities or difficult to understand.

This week our students will also recap the emergency evacuation procedures. This is in preparation for a scheduled practice drill. The two lessons are timely and fit well together.

Below is our scope and sequence for Term 1.

Congratulations to our ladies who competed at the North West Swimming trials this week. They did themselves and Kootingal Public School proud. Not only did they swim their hearts out but they were so good they performed personal bests!

Out of 28 other female competitors in her age group, Colbie Butler of Year 5 performed personal best times in all her events placing 6th in butterfly, 9th in freestyle and 12th in backstroke.

Our senior girls relay team comprising of Colbie Butler, Jessie Johnson, Emma Jarrett and Damikah Barwick-Taylor also performed another personal best.

Great work ladies and we couldn’t be more proud of your efforts!

Our students enjoyed another extra curricular activity this week with our student in K-2 travelling to Tamworth for the live performance of The Gruffalo at the Capitol Theatre. To say our students were excited would be an understatement. From all reports our students loved it, even the part when the Gruffalo went through the audience! This excursion was subsidised through the profits of our school’s Clothing Pool and in consultation with our P&C. At Kootingal Public School we aim to ensure our cultural activities are accessible for all students.

Thank you to our students and teachers who participated in the Clean Up Australia Day last Friday. Students exited the school grounds, with their teacher, into our community and assisted with the clean up of rubbish in and around our parks and streets. It’s wonderful to see the community spirit alive and well entrenched at Kootingal Public School.

Last week I addressed our parking issues along Denman Ave. It has come to our attention again this week. Please ensure you are adhering to the parking guidelines for this area, in particular the area located outside the staff carpark. This area is not nose in parking. It is parking with the rear of the car backed up to the fence line. This is so drivers have clear vision of students, parents and teachers when leaving this area.

Chess at Kootingal PS commenced this week for the 2019 school year. Our students are eager to improve their chess knowledge and skills. Thank you to Mr Foody, our relieving General Assistant, for helping our newer students with their games of chess. Your knowledge is invaluable, not just to the children. Chess is played on every Monday during first break in the library. Students eat their lunch while playing. We can’t wait for the first competition.

Mrs Cracknell’s Message

Mrs Cracknell’s Message

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me

to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 11 March and 12 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 15th March.

Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

Instruction for schools The following sample can be used by schools to draft a letter to parents, alternatively, relevant parts can be cut and pasted into a school newsletter, school intranet or school letterhead.

Dear Parent or Carer During May 2019, students at our school in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 (delete as required) will sit the NAPLAN paper assessments. The schedule for tests is as follows:

On Friday 17 May, a ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test. Students may be exempt from the NAPLAN tests if they:

x are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

x have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are also available to meet the needs of individual students. Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer after consultation with the school principal. To withdraw your child from NAPLAN, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with your child’s teacher if you need to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN. Any questions? Contact the NAPLAN team on 1300 119 556 or [email protected].
