Not all transitions were good: the Supreme Court of Canada ushered in great fear and concern when they threw out the law criminalizing physician‐assisted suicide. The Culture of Death was no longer content to prey on the poor unborn, but spread its wings to swoop down on the desolate elderly, disabled, and depressed. And our medical professionals will be enjoined to use their knowledge and training to be complicit in this dastardly assault against the vulnerable. Brother Knights, one of the six service programs our Order takes on is the Culture of Life. We must not only push back against these attacks. We must storm the gates of hell, drawing the sword of prayer, proclaiming in the public square that life is a gift from God, to be cherished and protected from conception to natural death. Woe, Canada! Petition Against Assisted Suicide February6wasadarkdayinCanadianhistorywhentheSupremeCourtoverturnedthelawagainstphysician‐assistedsuicide.Thisisastepdowntheslipperyslopetowardeuthanasia,afuturewheretheelderlyanddisabledwillbeunderpressuretosavethemedicalsystemsomemoneyanddothe“right”thing,wherefamilymembersmaybeabletojustify“mercykilling”asalegal‐so‐must‐be‐moralchoice,andwheredoctorswillbeaskedtoviolatetheiroathtodonoharm.
Council6855hasbeenquicktoadditsvoicetothethousandspetitioningtheCanadianParliamentandSenatorstoinvokethe“notwithstanding”clausetooverruletheSupremeCourt.Manyhavesignedtheonlinepetition,andatthelastPancakeBreakfast,wegatheredmoresignaturesfromparishionersinattendance.Itcreatedawarenessforsomewhohadnotbeenfollowingthenews,anditfoundmanyeagertosignandlettheirvoicesbeheard.
AsfollowersofChrist,weallknowthatsufferinghasmeaningandvalue.Ade‐Christianizedsocietymaybehard‐pressedtoagreewiththat.Wehaveourworkcutout,BrotherKnights!Letusbegin.
Above, Bro. Francis Lee found many supportive folks at the Pancake Breakfast, including our State Deputy’s wife Sandra Shawchuk, willing to sign the petition. Some people were unaware of the decision, and many were eager to take part in a concerted response to it. Below, the text of the petition to the Canadian Parliament and Senate. TheKnightsEducationalSeminarwasheldonFebruary17attheSt.PaulParishCentre.Thirtymembersattended,lessthanexpectedgiventhevigourousworkoftheExecutivephoningcommitteeininvitingthegeneralmembership,butanencouragingstartnonetheless.
Theplannedseriesofcouncildevelopmentseminars,initiatedbythePastGrandKnights(PGKs)ofCouncil6855,seekstoimpartknowledgeofthefunctionsandobjectivesparticularlyoftheExecutivepositions,andtokindleparticipationbynewermembersintheactivitiesandfunctionsoftheCouncil.
PGKRodWinning,aschairoftheorganizingcommitteeofPGKs,providedtheintroductionsandactedasmoderator.GKLorenzoRanadagavetheopeningprayerandwelcomingremarks.FieldAgentJoseCabaluexpoundedon“WhyYouBecameaKnight”andhow“24HoursCanChangeYourLife.”PGKAmericoSilvaspokeontheimportanceofmeetingconductandprotocols.FormerDistrictDeputyandPGKKimNgdescribedthestructureoftheOrderandtheDegrees.HewasfollowedbyPGKPhilipBarnwellspeakingonMembershipRetentionandRecruitment.FormerMasterandPGKTonyPimentelexplainedtheroleoftheFinancialSecretary.
ThenextinstallmentintheseriesisaFamilyInformationalMeetingthatwillincludewivesandchildren.Thiswillfocusontheserviceprogramsandcouncilprojects.Weplantohaveanideaboardandanopen loordiscussion,alongwithrefreshmentsandfreedrawprizes.Watchforfurtherannouncements.
