A MESSAGE FROM FR. STEVE

1981 and will also be beatified later this year. “The beatification is a remarkable moment in all of our lives and one to celebrate Father Solanus, whose compas-sion and attribution to miraculous cures have endeared him to those in Detroit and across the world,” stated Father Michael Sullivan, OFM Cap. and Provincial Minister of the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph. “We welcome as many as possible to be a part of it.” “Not unlike the Silverdome Mass celebrated by Saint John Paul, this, too, will be a history-making liturgy. The beatifi-cation of Father Solanus Casey is an incomparable grace for the church in the Archdiocese of Detroit and for the whole community. He is an inspiration to Catholics–and to all–of the power of grace to transform one’s life.” Throughout his ministry, beginning in New York for 20 years, serving at three different parishes, Fr. Solanus was a beloved Capuchin Friar credited with miraculous cured and valued for his wise and compassionate counsel. He served at St. Bonaventure Monastery on Mt. Elliott Street in Detroit, where he worked for over 20 years as a porter and spent his life in the service of people, endearing him to thousands who would seek his counsel. He earned the recognition as ‘the Doorkeeper’ – a Brother who would provide soup for the hungry, kind words for the troubled, and a healing touch for the ill. In another week, we and all those in America will be able to say, “Blessed Solanus, Pray for Us!” It’s a gift to us and to our nation, state, and community. Stay Awake! This week, we hear a parable from Jesus that highlights the importance of preparedness for His return, the Parable of the Ten Virgins, five of whom were prudent and prepared, five of whom were not. The take-away is clear: Be Vigilant. Be Ready. Stay Awake. Let’s be like the wise virgins and be ready whenever the Lord chooses to return. Praying that we will all be ready whenever He comes, Father Steve

Be There . . .

This Saturday evening (November 11) after the Vigil Mass, we will gather to celebrate God’s goodness to us and to have an evening of fun, fellowship, and fundraising at our 13th Annual School Auction. I’m grateful for all of those who have labored lovingly to prepare for that annual event. In contrast to many school auctions, the cost is minimal to attend. We want this to be a parish event as well as a way to help us raise money to continue to form Disciples of Christ at Resurrection School. Please plan to join us after the Vigil Mass. It’s a great time and a great cause. And remember: Bid early and often! On Retreat I’m writing this article from Detroit, where I am giving a Clergy Retreat to priests of the archdiocese. It’s a good group of priests, mostly “senior priests.” This group of priests have been taking their retreat together for a long time. Surprise, surprise, I’m giving retreat conferences on the theme of “Priest as Healer of Souls.” It has been good to be able to prayerfully prepare and to present this material. Please pray for the priests who attended, that the graces they received from God might bear fruit in and through them. Lumen Veritatis Our second lecture of the Lumen Veritatis series will be held next Sunday (note the day), November 19th at 7:00 p.m. My brother, Dan Mattson, author of Why I Don't Call Myself Gay: How I Reclaimed My Sexual Reality and Found Peace, will share the journey of his life as a Prodigal Son who left God behind to live the way the world said he could find happiness. That didn’t work, and, much to his surprise, he finally found the peace and happiness he was looking for in the last place he expected to find it, the Cath-olic Church. Please consider inviting others to join you to hear Dan speak on what is fast becoming one of the most challenging topics of our time. As always, we will have food, drink, and fellowship, the talk, questions & answers, and more fellowship. It’s a great time. I hope to see you there. Beatification of Fr. Solanus Casey, OFM, Cap. Next Saturday, November 18th at 4:00 p.m., Venerable So-lanus Casey will be beatified at Ford Field. Faithful from around the state and country will be there, including a group of about 85 from our parish. In case you haven’t heard about this, I want to share some information about Father Solanus Casey and the Beatification Mass: Father Solanus Casey will be elevated to Blessed in the Ro-man Catholic Church, which is the final step before saint-hood. A member of the Capuchin Franciscan Order of St. Joseph in Detroit and one of the co-founders of the city’s Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Father Solanus Casey was born November 25, 1870 and died July 31, 1957. He will be the second American-born male to be beatified. The first is Fa-ther Stanley Rother, a North American priest who died in

“Even a Winter Coat” Once upon a time a little girl sat with her friends at school while they chattered and giggled about their fami-ly Christmas plans. Unusually silent, the girl listened to them before whispering her only Christmas wish: a warm winter coat. Many of our families struggle to provide basic needs for their family. Our Holiday Giving programs provide local families with joy on Christmas. Our Adopt-A-Family cam-paign provides Wish Lists for a sibling group and items that will benefit an entire household. National Vocation Awareness Week! Nov 5-11th

Prayer for Vocations

God, our Father, together with Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, we ask that You pour out Your Spirit upon all the men, women and children of the Diocese of Lansing.

We ask for growth in a culture of vocations. May we, as Catholics, be a witness of commitment and selfless love in living out our baptismal call. May we see the same gifts in those already living in marriage, consecrated life and Holy Orders.

Help us to have no fear in asking Your will for our lives. Through this asking, may we learn to hear your call clearly and to respond quickly with a desire to "do whatever You tell us." Mother Mary, pray for us!

GUIDELINES FOR THE MASS INTENTION BOOK

One of the challenges we face at Resurrection is giving each Parish Family a chance to have Masses offered for their family members. We have a few guidelines that will help more parishioners schedule Masses for the inten-tions of their loved ones.

• There will be a limit of 6 Masses that any one parish family may request for the year, (up to 2 of these can be Sundays)

• Only 1 intention per Mass is allowed, per Church governance. However, to better accommodate the needs of our parishioners, we can list up to 3 first names with the same last name (i.e. John, Paul & Mary Smith) OR 2 last names (i.e. Jones & Smith Families)

A few notes to remember before requesting a Mass:• One Sunday Mass per weekend is offered for the intention of the Parishioners of Resurrection• Please have an alternate date and time in mind, in the event that your 1st choice is not available• A $10 stipend is due at the time of the Mass request (checks preferred, exact change only)• All Mass intentions over 6 requests will be sent to a Mission assigned by the Diocese, to be said at their con-

venience

We do not want to discourage any parishioner from scheduling Masses for loved ones or other special intentions. However, we also want all parishioners to have equal opportunities to have their intentions prayed for. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.

The 2018 Mass Intention Book is now open
