The conduct of the Auction, registration and application to place bids, placing of bids and sale of lots in the Auction during this auction period (the "Auction Period") shall be regulated by the Auction Terms and these Important Notices. In the event of any ambiguity or any discrepancy between the Auction Terms and these Important Notices, these Important Notices will prevail. Any capitalised terms used but not defined in these Important Notices have the meaning set out against such terms in the Auction Terms. Prospective Bidders should read the Auction Terms and these Important Notices carefully.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY CLAUSES 13, 14 and 15 OF THE AUCTION TERMS WHICH SET OUT K AUCTION'S

The lots shall be sold on an "as is" basis as at the time of sale of the lots (whether or not the Buyers are in attendance in person at the Auction). The Bidder shall be responsible for conducting his/her own research and satisfying himself/herself of the condition of the lots, including, but not limited to, damage and/or restoration of the lots and in respect of any entries provided in the Auction Catalogue and/or elsewhere. K Auction will only accept a bid from a Bidder in respect of a lot on the assumption that the Bidder has satisfied himself/herself of the condition of such lot and in respect of any entries provided in the Auction Catalogue and/or elsewhere.

All amounts in US Dollars shown in the Auction Catalogue and/or elsewhere are for reference only and all bids and payment will be in Korean Won (KRW), unless otherwise expressed in the Auction Terms and/or these Important Notices or otherwise agreed in writing by K Auction. K Auction shall not be responsible for any error or omission, however caused, arising from, or in connection with, conversion of currencies.

The Prospective Bidder shall complete a Bidder Registration Form and provide a proof of photographic identity such as passport, driving licence or government issued identification card to collect his/her bidding paddle 30 minutes prior to the Auction commencement. The Prospective Bidders, including first-time Prospective Bidders, and when K Auction deems necessary, have to provide one or more original or copy of the following: bank reference or statement, credit card (visa/master), Sothebys Client registration card, Christies Client registration card or relevant supplementary document to confirm the financial credit of Prospective Bidder. The Prospective Bidders should register 24 hours prior to the Auction commencement in case of a written bid or a bid by telephone. K Auction staff will attempt to execute a written bid at the lowest possible price taking into account the Reserve Price, subject to the maximum bid price in writing. In respect of a lot, if a written bid, bid in person, bid by telephone have the same price, bidder has priority in the order of written bid, bid in person and bid by telephone subject to, and in accordance with, the Auction Terms. If two written bids for a lot have the same bid price, the Bidder of the written bid first received by K Auction will be declared the Buyer subject to, and in accordance with, these Auction Terms. K Auction shall use reasonable endeavours to enable Bidders to place bids in person, in writing or by telephone, but K Auction does not accept any responsibility for failure to do so or delay in doing so or for any error and/or omission by K Auction, its directors, officers, employees and/or agents in processing any registration and/or application to place bids, receiving and/or placing written or telephone bids, howsoever caused. All bids placed may be recorded and Bidders, by placing bids, are deemed to have consented to the recording of their conversations or actions.

The contract of the sale of a lot shall be made between the Seller and the Buyer. The sale of a lot shall occur when the auctioneer accepts the highest bid by striking his/her hammer and calling the paddle number of the highest Bidder (i.e. the Buyer). As a member of the first post-liberation generation of Korean

artists, Chang Sup Chung was an influential abstract painter

that redefined the identity of Korean contemporary art.

During his artistic career, the artist attempted a wide range of

experiments from monochrome paintings to paper mulberry,

resulting in such works like Meditation NO.99803. Part of

the Meditation series, which begun in the 1990s, the work

on offer is a prime example of Chungs artistic journey in the

defining stages of Korean art. Following a controlled series

of gestures that followed the rhythm of meditation, he used

tak fibre to transform the surface of the cotton and give it a

degree of elevation. The offered work embodies the dogma

that pushed the Meditation series and is a materialization of

his devotion to the development of the history of post-war

    contemporary art.

As one of the pioneers of abstract monochromatic art

in Korea, Chung Sang Hwas meticulous execution of

'Untitled 82-1' is an incomparable example of the artists

oeuvre. The artist used two distinctive methods to execute

this work removing and repainting, where paint was

applied repeatedly upon layer and then peeled off. The

artist covered his canvases with clay, scored them with

grids and then excavated each small square before

filling them individually with paint. This laborious process

transformed the one dimensional canvas into a work of

depth and illusion. The apparent simplicity of 'Untitled

82-1' is deeply mesmeric and stands to be an epitome of

    his artistic philosophy.

Known as one of the leading figures of Dansaekhwa, Ha

ChongHyuns Conjuction 97-004 is a primary example of the

artists oeuvre. His curiosity with the materiality of paint and

the canvas is demonstrated in this work the artist pushed

thick oil paint from behind the coarsely woven canvas

so it seeps through to the surface. He then smeared the

protruding paint transforming the one dimensional canvas

into a surface with depth and complexity.

First, I put the mulberry fiber in water. The duration it

is submersed under water and the length of the fibers

determine the appearance. I then take it out of the water

and use my hands to cover the canvas with it. Sometimes

patting it and sometimes caressing it, I start to converse

with the substance. I then wait to see what expression the

fiber makes. I put aside my will to create and wait for the

mulberry fiber to express itself. Chung ChangSup

Like many Korean artists of the Post-War era, Park SeoBo

turned away from figuration and later established himself

as a major figure in the Korean Monochrome (Dansaekhwa)

    movement . Combined wi th the sp i r i t o f Western

abstraction and traditional Korean approach to method and

composition, the work on offer demonstrates the artists

aesthetic rigor. Ecriture No.060529 is part of the Ecriture

series which was based on the act of emptying ones self

    - demonstrated in the repetitiveness and monochromatic

palette of the work. He believed that artists need to empty

their minds when producing an artwork and should not

be the product of logic. This was the underlying principle

behind Parks artistic practice and is a great example of the

    Dansaekhwa movement.

THE ART OF DANSAEKHWA , 2014

Art of Yun HyongKeun has loneliness. Only those who are

lonely can feel the pleasure of withdrawing into themselves.

In a way, a viewer can find a shelter in Yuns work, pausing

and looking back at ourselves who are struggling to keep

pace. The stillness and modesty in the colored shades

of his painting allude to the peaceful beauty of sublimity.

Using his unique technique of natural paint smudging on

a thin fabric, he makes layers of lines to add a sense of

depth in his work and make it look peaceful. His work of

art has a strictly refined aesthetics, but it also has simplicity

that is akin to nature. In other words, through his painting,

he builds a world of moderation that is very simple and

austere. The black that he applies on his canvas is not just

black. It has all tints of colors including red, yellow, blue

and colors of the soil and grass. Furthermore, the sorrows

of life and loneliness are delicately expressed in his black.

His work with its complexities describes the profundity of

nature that is deep and wide indefinitely.

Tony DeLap was an influential figure of the minimalist movement.

Geometric abstraction was at the core of his works, complimented

by the principles of limited color and precise craftsmanship. Hanky

900 is an example of this aesthetic and is further developed by the

artist through the utilization of illusionist techniques. The work features

strong architectural and design elements, and is reduced to the

most basic expression of form, shape and color. The work on offer

illustrates DeLaps fascination with asymmetry and forms that cannot

be observed in nature. The work also appears to be defying gravity,

obscuring the viewers perception of reality. His fascination with

reducing his works to basic colors and forms is consistently visible

throughout his career such as in Bluey-Bluey(Fig.1) a piece that was

produced the year after Hanky 900. The artist exhibited in Primary

Structures at the Jewish Museum and in American Sculpture of the

Sixties at the Los Angeles County Museum, the two most significant

exhibitions that helped define the minimalist movement.

    501 (: 501 Great Artists:A Comprehensive Guide to the

Giants of the Art World), (Stephen Farthing), ,

    2009

Celebrated for her contribution to the feminist art movement,

Nevelson is widely known for her dramatic monochromatic

wooden wall sculptures. Pushing the boundaries of what

is expected from a female artist, and breaking away from

the traditional practices of Female Art (drawing, painting,

arts and crafts), Nevelson produced large installation works

of architectural scale. Unquestionably influenced by Marcel

Duchamps readymades, the artist used salvaged pieces of

scrap wood from old buildings and then composed them in

a box like formation, ultimately giving birth to a monumental

wall sculpture. Once carefully arranged, the artist then

paints the work black, unifying the single cubby holes into a

complete work of art. The present lot has a strong narrative,

a very personal one, which embodies her cumulative

experiences as an immigrant, a Jewish, and a female artist in

the heavily male dominated realm of art. Her experimentation

with industrial materials, such as the wood used in this

work, allowed her to expand the scale and complexity of her

works, while at the same time challenge the expectations

of what female artists could produce. Nevelson shares

her narrative consistently throughout this body of work

and is most explicitly expressed in her most recognized

work, Sky Cathedral(Fig.1). Much like the work on offer the

salvaged wood from old buildings that would have once

been constructed by men is given new meaning through an

intimate and methodical formation by Nevelson. The scale

of The Wedding Present breaks the conventional concept

that only mens artwork can be large scale, reflecting her

emphasis on the value of freedom of expression.

Sol LeWitt played a pivotal role in the New York art scene

during the 1950s and 1960s, where he contributed to

the creation of a new aesthetic that defied the Abstract

Expressionist current of the time. Cube embodies this radical

change and is an excellent example of LeWitts conceptual

practice. Lewitt placed significant value on the intangible

concept or idea of an artwork and claimed that a work

does not need a material presence to be considered art.

This challenged some fundamental beliefs about art and

the authority of the artist as LeWitt redefined the role of an

artist to be the generator of ideas and distanced himself

from the physical execution of the work. The work on offer is

constructed of skeletal cube constructs displaying a strong

linear and geometric composition with a lot of voids. These

voids hint at the artists emphasis on intangibility and the

absence of a narrative or meaning that viewers often yearn

for when studying a work of art. The artist claimed that art

does not need to imply any sort of meaning and can exist for

its own sake, which further highlights his emphasis on the

idea or concept of a work. This theme is repeatedly explored

throughout his major works, a notable example being the

Pyramid(Fig.1). This strong emphasis reflects LeWitts

prejudice towards intangibility (a concept) over tangibility,

where the former can ultimately sustain its existence infinitely

contrary to the finite lifespan of the latter, which is vulnerable

    to decay or destruction.

As one of the most innovative artists of the postwar period,

Oldenburg is best known for his playfully surreal sculptures

that glorify ordinary, modern day object. Lot 134. Fagend

Study is a perfect example of the artists practice, whereby

a used cigarette butt has been manipulated in scale, making

the instantly recognizable object seem mysteriously unfamiliar.

Appropriating the form of a conventional, commonplace

object and recasting it at an enormous proportion, the artist

simultaneously plays at the viewers perception of reality and

the irony of the subject matter on view. Much like his peers

of the Pop Art movement, Oldenburg challenged the somber

bravado of Abstract Expressionism that had swept over New

York by modifying its thickly impastoed bravura paint with

figurative images and found objects. While many would label

Oldenburg as an abstract artist, the artist saw himself as a

    realist.

His curiosity in the surreal portrayal of everyday life is further

explored in his other works, most notably the Three Way

Plug(Fig.1) and Soft Toilet(Fig.2). Similar to the offered

work, the physical qualities of these ordinary objects are

manipulated; the small plug is transformed into a colossal

scale and the toilet we recognize as robust is reinvented into

a soft, deflated sculpture. These works, including the one on

offer, are part of a body of work labeled The Home, which

was inspired by his move to Los Angeles and its foreign

surroundings. The Home is one of several bodies of work

produced by Oldenburg - among these are The Street and

The Store(see Fig.3), which explore urban life and everyday

    goods respectively.
