We’ve got a

new preaching series this sum-

mer. It’s a back to the basics

chance to review some of the

things about our faith we might

make assumptions about. Beth-

any has a history of a specific approach to our

faith that is deeply rooted in the history of our

denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples

of Christ.) (You can see the details of the series

in the graphic on the right.)

One of the obvious basics not in our se-

ries is THE BIBLE. Many people like to describe

the Bible as “The Word of God.” It is a beautiful

image. The Bible, however, is not the literal

“words of God.” God did not write the Bible

and God did not guide the hand of the people

who did. Some of you may be saying, WHAT?

Those assumptions are a common misconcep-

tion about the Bible by Christians.

If the Bible is not literally God’s words,

then WHAT is it? Well, the Bible is the life and

work of people who want to make sure their

experiences with God were passed on to the

next generation. For many centuries, and some

may say thousands of years, the stories of the

Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament, were told

from one generation to another, eventually be-

ing written down. The New Testament books

were similar, but over a shorter period of time.

Every book of the Bible had a journey to get to

us the way it is now. The New Testament collec-

tion of 27 books was first listed together by

Athanasius of Alexandria in the year 367 CE.

The journey of these books put together

and often re-

ferred to as

“The Good

Book” is fasci-

nating. That

journey and the

people’s experi-

ence of God

within the Bible

calls forth a ho-

liness that we

e x p e r i e n c e

every time we

read scripture.

“In the Beginning”

Everyone knows about the first book of the

Bible, “Genesis.” But what do you

know about it? That’s what our

Bible Study class wondered, so

we have decided to look more

carefully at it. We’ll find the sto-

ries of Adam and Eve, Cain and

Abel, Ishmael and Isaac, Noah,

the tower of Babel, Jacob and Esau, and

many others.

We are thrilled that Dr. Lisa Davison, from

Phillips Theological Seminary, will be kicking

off our study this Sunday. Where to start?

With chapter one, verse one, of course. We

invite you to join us at 9:30 a.m. With Dr. Davi-

son’s help we’ll start “In the beginning . . .”

You really don’t want to miss the amazing

discoveries she will find in chapter one.

Count your Blessings: Name them One-by-One

Disciples Women are given the opportunity to recognize and give thanks

for the blessings that we receive each year by keeping a Blessing Box. Blessings are

counted by putting coins into the box, and this year we are inviting others in the con-

gregation to join in the celebration of God’s blessings.

We have placed blessing box containers on the table outside the sanctuary

and the table in fellowship hall so that others might count their blessings

as well. Monies from these offerings, which support Disciples Mission

Fund, will be dedicated at the women’s Encounter event June 22-23.

"In the Mood," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo," and

"Pennsylvania 6-5000" are just some of the many Big Band tunes that will be per-

formed by The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra (GMO) as it stops by the Tulsa Commu-

nity College VanTrease PACE June 15 as part of its five-city 2012 Oklahoma Tour. Other tour

stops include Miami on June 11, Ponca City on June 13, Lawton on June 14 and the OKC

area on June 16.

GMO is the most sought-after Big Band in the world today for both concert and dance en-

gagements. It has been "on the road" longer and more continuously than any other Big

Band ever, having celebrated its 50th year anniversary on June 6, 2006! It travels over

100,000 miles each year, playing nearly 300 dates, with more than 500,000 people annually

attending its performances. It has performed in all 50 United States, as well as throughout

Europe, Australia, Iceland, New Zealand, Guam, the Philippines, South and Central America.

It is a fully self-contained group consisting of the musical director, five saxophone players,

four trumpeters, four trombonists, and three rhythm musicians (piano, bass and drums). Also,

there are two vocalists, one male and one female, who perform individually and as part of

The Moonlight Serenaders® vocal group.

In addition to the famous Miller tunes, the Orchestra will be performing a special Oklahoma

medley (including a little Bedlam!) written by a former GMO member in the Glenn Miller

style, uniquely commissioned for the Oklahoma Tour.

The tour has been organized by Wallace Walcher, an Edmond resident. Wallace discov-

ered GMO's existence over five years ago via a web search, and then attended a show in

the Oklahoma City area. He was amazed at how much better the big band music sounded

live compared with the 1940's era recordings. Also, the choreography and energy with

which the GMO performed the numbers made the concert even more enjoyable. He was

hooked. He determined that Oklahoma needed to hear more of the GMO and came up

with the idea of a state-wide tour.

Additional information for the tour and all tour venues is found on the tour website,

www.okbigband.com. Tickets for the Tulsa performance are $27.50- $59.50, with $5 discount

for groups of 10 or more, and can be purchased by calling 918-595-7777 or going to

www.myticketoffice.com.
