Deputy's Cornerable to quickly see that very few of the popular apps are rated for the ages rep-resented in our primary school.

We need to be involved parents. We cannot expect our young children to make really great, wise and informed decisions without our involvement. All technology should be used in an area where everyone can see what is being used to provide our children with safety through accountability. All devices should remain in a common family used space and not be allowed into bedrooms where there is little accountability and lots of temptation.

We also need to be invested in our chil-dren and in how, and when, our children use technology. The advice given is that for every hour of screen time, children should have an hour of ‘green’ time, meaning that children should be en-couraged to actively play. Children need to practice communicating with others and be given the space to explore their imaginations. It is through this bounc-ing of ideas and communication off one another, face to face, that children learn the subtleties of communication which cannot be developed if they spend their time texting or emailing each other.

The hot topic over the past few weeks seems to be on social media safety and cyber ‘intelligence’ which encompasses so much more than the basics of cyber safety. Recently I heard on Life FM a segment discussing the need for the “3 I’s” in mixing children and social media. The three I’s for parents of children using social media were to be;

• Informed

• Involved

• Invested

As parents, we cannot just ‘ban’ children from technology because of what they ‘might’ do or in response to what they have done. We need to be informed about what apps our children are using, what the age restrictions are, how to make the apps safe for our children to use and whether or not the app is the best one for our children to use. Most of the issues that present themselves at school is students having access to social media apps that are years too young. Parents can access www.esafety.gov.au to see a list of the age limits for each social media app, and the recommended age limit according to the app store rating and google play rating. Parents will be

Technology is not the enemy. It is actu-ally a really useful and often necessary tool to navigate our modern lives. It is our responsibility as parents to be well informed in what our children are using, to be involved in them and their learning and to be invested in cultivating well informed, intelligent technology users who can make healthy decisions about their usage of the technological play-ground.

Premier's Active Challenge

The Premier's be active Challenge is a program for all South Australian chil-dren. The challenge is to be physically active for 60 minutes a day, for 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. If students can do that, they will receive a medal.

The Premier’s Active Challenge runs for 4 weeks and is designed to encourage students to increase their active time to improve their fitness. The program was launced last Monday during Monday Morning Praise. These 4 weeks can be done anytime between now and the end of Term 3 and can include the holidays. The challenge requires students to do four weeks in a row.

Students need to do an hour of activity a day (not necessarily all at once, 15 mins of an activity at recess and a 45 mini-mum sport training on the same day = 1

hour) and log this activity.

They can include walks to and from school, sporting commitments outside school as well as fitness activities here at school. Students can complete this chal-lenge at home or use a combination of fitness, PE lessons, netball and or footy practice, table tennis at recess and even activities they do on camps etc.

They need to do 5 days out of 7 and they can choose which days work best for them.

This is open to all students and we would love lots of kids to be involved. This is not compulsory however.

To support students choosing to partic-ipate, two of our Year 6 students will be encouraging other students by leading them in some fun activities during recess and lunch over the coming weeks.

These will run over the last weeks of Term 2 and also Week 1 of Term 3.

Data sheets can be returned to the library for processing.

Term 2 Highlights

Year 6 Camp

Once more in Week 8 the Year 6’s travelled to Wirraway Homestead for another two nights of adventure. They are never going to forget the exciting experiences they had. All of the activities at the camp were fun, everyone in Year 6 enjoyed horse riding. Other activities included rock climbing, bushwalking, archery, the amazing race, night games and more. One other favourite activity was sheep herding, many lost their voices and enjoyed running with their friends. Cuisine at the camp was delicious, the meals were amazing, and people even wanted seconds! There were tons of fun games such as Guess The Logo, Guess The Face and Fact Attack. The time spent at camp was a fantastic advantage for the Year 6’s because, it was a great way of making new friends and spending time with their friends. We definitely would like to go back and enjoy the fun activities again, we hope the next Year 6’s enjoy Wirraway as much as we did.

Rita, Tina, Brooklyn and Michael.

Book Fair

Thanks to all of you for your support of the Koorong and Scholastic Book Fair. The event was a huge success! The children loved visiting the Book Fair, looking at books, stationery and wacky packs, making choices for themselves, and managing their money. We hope they are enjoying their selections.

We also want to thank our wonderful library leaders who assisted the crowds of young shoppers to make their selections and calculate prices.

Nearly a $1,200 was raised from the event and the proceeds will be used to purchase new classroom books for the House of Hope School in Indonesia.

Thanks again for your continued support.

2017 CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Friday 24th March, Bethany held their Cross Country Championships. What a great day for our students from year two to six who all competed, most with the incentive of the fun run fundraiser that went with this event. The students ran or walked different length of races throughout the day (1km, 2km or 3km) depending upon their age.

We very grateful to our volunteer parents and the staff who made the day a true success by assisting in being a marshall or doing admin at the results desk. Thank you to Kathryn Ebert, Anne Depares, Craig Etherton, Cheryl Lockyer, Abby Penaluna, Essie Hester, Matt Slack, Amber Walsh and Shelley Howard. Many thanks also goes to Peter Wyten for starting the races and by setting up and packing down the oval course with the maintenance team. We would also like to thank the teaching staff who ably assisted us to help make the day run smooth. Lastly, a very special thank you to Mrs Cheryl Wyten who stepped in on the day to be the Head Marshall and did a wonderful job. There were many supporters of parents, family and friends who came out to cheer the students on. Thank you so much for coming out on the day.

Final House Points for the day were as follows:

Abednego 783

Shadrach 742

Meshach 714

Each year the students are given an opportunity to raise money through our annual cross country champion-ships.

This year our students fundraised $4015.50 with the profit of $2810.85 going towards sports uniforms and sports equipment. What a wonderful effort and it is so great to be able to maintain and purchase sports uniforms for representative sports. It is also fantastic to be able to update equipment for our physical education lessons as well.

We would like to congratulate Chanel Hennessy on being the school’s highest fundraiser. Chanel raised $243.00 – what an exceptional effort.

These events included; high jump, 100m, 200m, 800m, long jump, discus, shot put and relays. All students were involved in these sporting events to earn points for their school and have a great time with friends. This event also allowed students to have the opportunity to meet, greet and form new friendships with students from other schools.

Many students came 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. Other students didn’t place, but tried and gave it their best effort. Besides the events, many students including the media team took several photos of the various events for use in the 2017 year book and Bethany News Program during Monday Morning Praise.

A canteen was also open where students, parents as well as teachers were able to buy recess and/or lunch while watching the students compete.

Our school had lots of fun. At the end of the day, the person who headed up the competition announced the overall winners. Our school Bethany won the Large School Division! By Amber Do (Year 6 Sheeky)
