Deputy's CornerSRC Fundraiser

A Student Representative Council (SRC) was created this year as a direct result of re-imagining student leadership within the school. After years of not having an SRC, the students who chose to take on an SRC position have worked well together to lay a foundation of student governance. It has been a big learning curve but with tremendous results. This Friday (Friday 1st December) is the culmination of attending class meetings, weekly lunch time SRC meetings and really listening to what the students of Bethany wanted changed. The SRC held a vote on a suggestion put forward from class meetings that students would like to have a hand held ball pump located in each classroom for easy access to pump up any flat balls as they go out to fitness or play. The SRC then wrote a letter to the Principal, Mrs Wendy Matear requesting permission to hold a fund-raiser. The choice of a casual clothes day was again chosen by listening to what the students wanted, and there was an overwhelming desire to have a casual clothes day in the school year.

Permission was provided through writ-ten correspondence between the Princi-pal and the SRC, then the SRC members were responsible for advertising and notifying the school about the fund-raiser. SRC members have also sourced affordable hand held ball pumps and have investigated if they have enough money to include a basketball for each classroom in addition to the pump. It has been a sensational experience for the Year 6 students to see how the process of finding a solution to a need

within the school has unfolded. A big congratulations to the SRC students is in order for their diligent work on behalf of their school community!

Cars, children and hot weather

Recently the school received a phone call from a concerned school community member who noticed that a parent had left a young child in a car during a very hot day while the parent went to pick up their child from within the school. The car was left running, and the concerned parent assumed that meant that the air-conditioner was left on. There have been numerous reports in the past few years of children who have been left in hot cars with disastrous results, most are not with deliberate intent to harm but are decisions made due to being time-poor. It is sometimes very tempting to leave a child or children in a vehicle for that ‘really short time’ especially if the child is asleep, but cars heat up very quickly putting young and vulnerable children at risk. Please re-think any deci-sion to leave a child unattended in a car (regardless of whether or not the car is running), even somewhere as safe as the school car park. I know first-hand how cumbersome getting young children into and out of car seats can be, but the risk far outweighs any benefits.

It has been my absolute pleasure to work with you all this year. I wish you and your families a wonderful Christmas school break, and look forward to seeing you all in the new school year.

God bless you,

Debbie Clifford

Premier’s Reading Challenge and Pre-mier’s Be Active Challenge Update

Congratulations to all those students who participated in the Premier’s Read-ing and Be Active Challenges. We had an incredible response and we are so pleased that so many students are inter-ested in reading and keeping themselves fit. Both attributes are excellent contrib-utors to increase learning.

Unfortunately delivery of the medals for both challenges have been delayed from the Premier’s office. Some medals and certificates will be delivered over the next week and we will give them to the children as soon as we can. Due to the lateness these will not be announced at Chapel as has been done in previous years.

Please be advised that if your child is due to receive a silver medal this year they will not be receiving their medal until 2018, as advised by the Premier’s office.

If students are moving on from Bethany Christian school next year and they ha-ven’t received their medals we will en-deavour to pass them on as soon as we can. Please advise us of any forwarding details.

We apologise for the delay and thank you for your understanding for something that is out of our control.

Kind Regards

Cherie Boxall

Premier's Reading Challenge

Usually at the end of every year we send home student medications that we store in the Care Room. However, this year the school is not sending the medications home. If you would like to have your child’s medication at home during the school holidays, please notify the front office by 8th December, and the medication will be sent home with your child on the last day of the school. The medication expiry dates are checked and the medical appliances are cleaned thoroughly during the holiday period and will be ready to use for next year.
