Vikings In The Streets Festival

held in Viking June 19 to 21. The three-day event starts with hospital bed races at 5 pm and

remote control car races on Main Street on Friday at 6 pm. There is also a chili cook off and taste test at the Viking Legion beginning at 6 pm. At 7 pm Samantha King will be providing

entertainment. On Saturday morning there will be a Viking Fire Department pancake breakfast at 8 am followed by a parade at 10 am. At the school grounds you can watch a lutefisk eating contest and live local

talent on the main stage beginning at 12:30 pm. A petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, and a country market at Viking Community Hall will be showcased with various vendors. The Viking re-enactment group

– Odins’ Ravens, will be set up in an authentic Viking encampment at the school grounds. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the camp to see what it was like to live in Viking times.

Odin’s Ravens will be participating in the Saturday morning parade as well as performing combat demonstrations. The day will be rounded out by a family dinner and dance with the band

Domino performing in the Viking Community Hall. Tickets are available at the door. On Sunday the festival wraps up with a pancake breakfast and roller derby

at the Viking Carena Complex at 1 pm.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $300 to Amisk School for the purchase of a “chrome book,” a wireless device that will allow children within the class-room to conduct research and access enhanced student programming. The “chrome book” will also help special needs students with word processing.

The grant was awarded from income earned by the David Creasy Memorial Fund. The fund was set up to allow descendants of David Creasy to recommend grants to the Battle River Community Foundation board.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to sup-port projects and programs in East Central Alberta which benefit communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Founda-tion are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations in accordance with the wishes of the donors.

Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Com-munity Foundation has granted over $2,900,000 to sup-port community programs and projects throughout the region.

approved improving a por-tion of the existing section of gravel road between High-way 21 and Armena Main Street with some grading improvements to be complet-ed at a later date.

Public works manager Graham Backus explained there was $85,000 budgeted in 2014 to complete paving work between the Highway 21 paved apron and the paved section on Armena’s Main Street. However, the $85,000 will be needed for Main Street alone.

Councillor Doug Lyseng of Armena said if only one of the projects can be done, he would recommend Main Street first. Then he declared a conflict of interest so other councillors could vote on the motion.

“Our schedule did not permit this work to be com-pleted in 2014 and as such the budgeted amount was carried over into 2015 in the form of a short term sav-ings account,” he reported to council on June 9.

A request for quotes was sent out to four pav-ing companies pertaining to the work. Border Paving had submitted the winning quote for the work.

About $85,000 of this project expense would be funded from the original operational budget, with the remaining $11,756 to be re-allocated from the gravel crushing budget.

“Schedule A which per-tains specifically to the apron paving and road upgrade between Highway 21 and the existing Armena Main Street paving was quoted at $145,870 in Border Paving’s submission, while the Sched-ule B work, which included repairs to the existing Main Street paving was quoted to be $86,285,” said Backus.

The motion to improve Armena’s Main Street this year was carried.

June 1A complaint of sexual

interference was received from a resident in Camrose County. A member spoke to all parties involved and the matter was resolved with no charges.

June 2RCMP attended an

accident at the construction site on Highway 21. A red Ford F-150 was stopped as per the flagman’s directions when it was rear-ended by a black Dodge Journey. No injuries were sustained.

June 4Police received a call to

assist EMS at a residence in Bawlf regarding a male who was unconscious, but breathing and later threat-ened EMS members. Police attended and it was deter-mined the individual may be suffering from a medical condition. The male agreed to see his family doctor.

June 5RCMP responded to a

call of shots being heard at a residence on Tillicum Beach Road. A member patrolled the area and spoke to another resident who had just shot a skunk that was trying to get at his chick-ens. It was determined that no offences were committed and the file was closed.

June 6Camrose RCMP

received a call regard-ing a two vehicle MVC/hit and run with injuries that occurred at the intersec-tion of Hwy 13 and Hwy 21. An 18-year-old female was trapped in a blue Dodge Dart. No information was available on the other vehi-cle that left the scene. Upon RCMP arriving at the loca-tion, the female driver was able to get herself out of her vehicle. She was sent to the hospital and later released.

June 7Police received two calls

indicating that a number of mailboxes had been broken into on TWP 500 and RR 200. A number of residents advised that bolts and locks were cut off the mailboxes and it was unknown as to what exactly was stolen.

RCMP and a sheriff from Wetaskiwin arrest-ed a gentleman following reports received of a pos-sible intoxicated driver on Hwy 21 just past Hwy 616. The individual was charged.

Police attended a resi-dence in New Norway regarding a home that was entered into unlawfully by a former resident. The indi-vidual entered the home through a window while homeowners were not home to get personal belongings. RCMP is currently speak-ing with all individuals involved.

Hosted by Alberta Milk, the event challenged attend-ees to think beyond the end of their driveway and see what leadership means in the dairy industry in Alberta. The event was targeted to those wanting to take over the family farm or start their own.

“It was a great opportu-nity to be in an environment where people my age could ask questions and be a part of an open discussion about the dairy industry and the future we can create togeth-er,” said Brittany Derksen, attendee.

False alarm bylaw in the works for Camrose CountyBy Murray Green

If you are considering purchasing a security sys-tem for your property in Camrose County you might want to read the instruc-tions several times. If you currently own a system, go back and read how to set the alarms properly, or it could prove costly.

After hearing the num-ber of times (200) the Cam-rose RCMP Detachment has been called out in false alarms last year, Council-lor Ken Krause directed administration to create a false alarm bylaw to be brought back to a future meeting, on May 26.

Protective Services manager Mike Kuzio reported that he has been in contact with Leduc County, the only county within our area that has a false alarm bylaw.

“Leduc County has not experienced a significant decrease in the number of false alarm calls since its bylaw was implemented in 2010,” he reported.

Councillors were sur-prised with the informa-tion. However, the limited records and other factors such as how many more security systems have been installed since then, made the numbers not as reliable.

Council agreed that each resident will be allowed one false alarm warning before fines are issued.

Some businesses have been guilty with as many as 15 false alarms in the past year when they simply didn’t report to the RCMP that it was a false alarm and that their services were not needed.

A new bylaw will like-ly be structured with an increasing fine as the num-ber of false alarms are reported. A proposal of $150 for the second offence, $250 for the third and $500 for each one after that was tossed around the council chambers.

“After a few $500 fines, people might be more inclined to read the instruc-tions on how to operate the security systems,” added Krause, who is trying to free the officers to do more important police work.

Camrose RCMP Sgt. Beth Philipp said an edu-cation process has to be in place.

“Security companies sell these products with the pretense that the alarms and police will look after them. They should be teach-ing people how to use them properly. The piece that is missing from all of this is that people need to know how these systems work,” she said.

Revenue from the fines would go to the County. The County funds a half-time person at the RCMP detach-ment.

Shotgun proposalCounty peace officers

would like to carry a shot-gun, not to attend false alarms, but to assist with dangerous animals, or for humane animal purposes.

Officer Kuzio reviewed the requirements of the Alberta Solicitor General Public Security Division for County Peace Officers to carry shotguns and brought the information to council.

“When I first started here I didn’t see a need to

carry a shotgun. But, the county is always changing and it would be useful to have a shotgun at times to put down injured animals,” said Kuzio.

He also indicated that the guns are locked up and the ammunition is stored in another location, so it is unlikely that they can be used by a person trying to overtake an officer.

Councillor Krause moved that Camrose Coun-ty council authorize the County Peace Officers to carry shotguns within the County and further, that administration be directed to draft a shotgun policy to be brought back to council at a future date.

All officers would have to pass an in-depth firearms course in order to carry the shotguns. The course would have to be renewed every year.

From Agri-NewsThe CFIA is engaging

more micro and small busi-nesses across the country to take part in consultations on the Safe Food for Canadians Act until June 30.

In 2013 and 2014, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) held exten-sive consultations with indus-try and other stakeholders on the new food framework. Some of those stakeholders have raised concerns over the ability of micro and small businesses to meet some of the requirements being con-sidered in the Act.

This consultation will help the CFIA better under-stand the food safety chal-lenges and costs that micro and small businesses face, and to seek feedback on options that could reduce the burden associated with certain requirements. Addi-tionally, the CFIA is also interested in hearing about the types of tools, guidance resources and support these businesses need to produce safe and compliant food.

Small businesses are those that generate $100,000 or less in annual food gross sales. Microbusinesses have annual food gross sales of $30,000 or less.

The CFIA is hosting webinar sessions to seek input from micro and small businesses on proposed approach to Safe Food for Canadians Act.

Camrose and District Support Services (CDSS) shared good news from its annual report, Making a Difference Across the Life Span, with Camrose County June 9.

CDSS executive direc-tor Margaret Holliston and community rural programer Clarence Hastings made the presentation.

“Calgary Support Ser-vices submitted its report to its City council and said for every dollar invested on preventive programs, about $13 is saved in more costly intervention down the road,” explained Holliston. “We don’t have the resources to research and back that up.”

Holliston thanked the County for helping fund the local program. “Last year, was a hard year for CDSS. Indeed, the past few years have been challenging. It has been quite some time since the provincial FCSS grant increased to ade-quately reflect our growing population. All over Alberta, FCSS programs like CDSS have been doing more with less. Our mettle (and our patience) has been tested,” said Holliston in the report.

CDSS stopped fund-ing The Open Door in 2014. CDSS helped establish The Open Door in the early 2000s. “We have proudly watched the youth shelter and outreach program grow, somewhat as a parent watch-es (and helps) a child grow, eventually stepping away as the child achieves indepen-dence. Parents never aban-don their adult children, however, and I hope the anal-ogy doesn’t end there. CDSS will continue going to bat for The Open Door with grant letters and other support as opportunities arise. Still, we did stop funding The Open Door. That was necessary, but it was also hard,” she added.

All CDSS funded pro-grams struggled to find new grant sources and increase user fees without creating a service barrier for Camrose and area residents.

“That, too, was hard, even though it did pay off with a little bit of new rev-enue,” Holliston added. “I am very proud of the way in which CDSS program directors have supported one another through these diffi-cult times. They have shown themselves to be resource-ful and strategic in piecing together budgets, and also caring and compassionate with one another.”

CDSS is blessed with a board that cares. “Our staff, volunteers and community partners have proven them-selves to be more valuable than ever over the past few years. In particular, I am grateful to our municipal partners for stepping up to the plate and providing us

with more money than they are required to according to the provincial FCSS act and regulation.”

FCSS (Family and Com-munity Support Services) is a municipal-provincial part-nership whereby the prov-ince provides 80 per cent of funding and municipali-ties the other 20 per cent. That formula has gradually shifted in recent years, with more and more municipali-ties providing larger over-contributions in addition to their required matches.

“When last we checked, the ratio was more like 75 per cent province and 25 per cent municipalities, thanks to Camrose County, the City of Camrose and partner Vil-lages,” said Holliston. “We hope that we can go back to 20 per cent when we receive more funding.”

Both the City and Coun-ty gave more than their share. “We know how pres-sured your council has felt regarding municipal budgets and we appreciate how you have helped us out while we

have waited, patiently, for provincial funding to come through,” said Holliston. “With the promise of just a little bit more FCSS money heading our way, I believe we will achieve amazing things in the years ahead.”

Hastings outlined the success of the Camrose and area Men’s Shed, a pro-gram dedicated to bringing men together for events. It was one of four pilot proj-ects within Canada and has grown to 14 members.

“We provide a welcom-ing place and we meet at the old timer’s hut at the Cam-rose and District Centennial Museum on Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m. One third of the members are from the county,” said Hastings. “The Men’s Shed deals with isola-tion and depression and is a grassroots program that allows the members to have input on the direction. Uni-versity of Manitoba research-ers will be here to gather information about establish-ing a Canadian Men’s Shed program.”

Newest horned dinosauron display at Tyrrell

A new species of horned dinosaur – one of the most impressive discoveries since Triceratops – has been unveiled at the Royal Tyr-rell Museum’s newest exhib-it, Fossils in Focus.

Regaliceratops Peter-hewsi was discovered by a member of the public in southeastern Alberta in 2005. Nicknamed “Hellboy” due to the combination of difficult excavation condi-tions and hardness of the rock surrounding the skull, the specimen took nearly 10 years from discovery to dis-play. Upon discovery, it was instantly noticeable that this specimen was some-thing that had never been seen before, especially con-sidering its unlikely location and unique features.

“This remarkable dis-covery expands our knowl-edge and understanding of horned dinosaurs,” said Minister of Culture and Tourism David Eggen. “Thanks to the work of the Royal Tyrrell Museum and our dedicated scientists, the world continues to learn more about Alberta’s rich palaeontological history.”

The research on this specimen was completed by Royal Tyrrell Museum scientists Dr. Caleb Brown, Post-doctoral Fellow, and Dr. Donald Henderson, Curator of Dinosaurs. Their research has greatly increased the understanding of the evolu-tion of horned dinosaurs.

“While the palaeonto-logical community is con-stantly finding new dino-saurs, they are often repre-sented by only small frag-ments of a skeleton, which can make it hard to imagine what they looked like,” said Brown. “With Hellboy, there is a huge, nearly complete skull of a very distinct new animal, and visitors to the Museum will be the first to see it on display.”

unveiled as part of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeon-tology’s newest exhibit, Fos-sils in Focus, which provides visitors with the chance to learn about some of the most significant specimens in the Museum’s collections.

Designed to be a space that evolves with our chang-ing understanding of pal-aeontology, this rotating exhibit will highlight some of the most remarkable and scientifically significant fos-sils from Alberta. New spec-imens reflecting current research will be added as the science of palaeontology moves forward.
