The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby cast members rehearse a scene.

By Dan JensenTickets are starting to

become scarce for the Kelsey Drama Society’s dinner theatre production of The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby at Kelsey Hall, Feb. 5.

“They are getting snapped up pretty fast,” said play producer Karen Robbins last week. “We had some people phone for tickets at 6:30 a.m. the first day they went on sale.”

The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby is set in the sleepy town of Kooshog Lake, where puffed-up, overachieving investment advisor James Bell has had the grave misfortune to have his car break down on his way to give a very important speech. To kill some time he decides to take part in a fishing der-by, where he quickly finds out that he has more to learn from the people than just how to fish. The story is complete with romance, broken hearts.

The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fish-ing Derby’s cast includes Gerry Pilger, a veteran of many Kelsey dinner theatre productions, who plays the role of an old fisherman, Andrew Little, who plays the role of Bell, Shirley Fairall, who plays the role of a long-time resi-dent of Kooshog Lake and the owner of a convenience store, Jackie Badry, who plays the owner of a bed and breakfast and a few other stores, and Shonna Burkard, who plays Mari-lyn, granddaughter of one of the people in the com-munity.

“They have been rehearsing once a week under director Ray Leiren since late October,” said Robbins.

The play was select-ed by the Kelsey Drama Society and the Kelsey Community Society last August.

“They read a bunch of different scripts and then try to choose one that fits well with the space that we have and the number of people who are prepared to be involved,” said Rob-bins. “They’re usually looking for something with which people from a small community can truly iden-tify.”

Robbins has been involved in every Kelsey drama production since her friend, Karen Green-wood, convinced her to see what it was all about in 2008.

Accidents happen at intersections

Farmers receive a weather tax break

Doug Griffiths, MLA,Battle River-Wainwright

January’s traffic safety campaign is focused on inter-section safety.

Last year, 80 people were killed and more than 8,000 people were injured in colli-sions at intersections in Alber-ta. About 87 per cent of all collisions are attributable to driver error. Staying focused and following the rules of the road are key to reducing col-lisions.

“Albertans continue to underestimate how dangerous an intersection can be. Pedes-trians, cyclists and motorists all converge at various speeds,

making collisions more likely,” said Wayne Drysdale, Minis-ter of Transportation.

“Alertness and awareness are critical behaviours when negotiating intersections, both in urban and rural set-tings,” said Superintendent James Stiles, deputy director, Alberta Sheriffs Traffic Oper-ations. “Close to 30 per cent of all fatal collisions in Canada are associated with intersec-tions. We’re asking drivers to slow down, drive defensively and share the responsibility of keeping our intersections safe.”

Intersection FactsIn Alberta last year, three

of the top five driver errors in casualty collisions were mak-ing a left turn across the path of an oncoming vehicle (12.9 per cent), committing a stop sign violation (7.8 per cent), and disobeying a traffic signal (7.2 per cent).

By Murray GreenWestern Canadian

livestock producers will receive tax relief if they faced forage shortfalls due to extreme weather events over the past year.

Livestock producers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Man-itoba will be allowed to defer tax on their cattle sales for 2014.

Federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz has released a list of designat-ed regions where tax defer-rals have been authorized for 2014.

The tax deferral allows eligible producers in des-ignated areas to defer

income tax on the sale of their breeding livestock for one year in order to help replenish that stock in the following year.

Proceeds from deferred sales are then included as part of the producer’s income in the next tax year, when those proceeds may be at least partially offset by the cost of replacing their breeding animals.

To defer income, the breeding herd must have been reduced by at least 15 per cent. If this is the case, 30 per cent of income from net sales can then be deferred.

Tax breakfor weather

Kelsey dinner theatreContinued from page 3

“I’ve done almost every job there is to do, from acting in three different productions and decorating the hall to designing sets and making costumes,” said Robbins. “I love it because it gives me a chance to be creative with my skills. One year they had me do an apartment building and make it look like it was made out of sandstone. We had people come up to touch it afterwards because it looked so real.”

The challenge this year is to create a rustic cabin-like setting.“It is a lot of hard work,” she said, “but there is a great

reward when you get something done and get it done right.”The Kelsey Dinner Theatre has enjoyed great success in

the 23 years it has been operating.“It started the first year as a fundraiser and was so well

received by audiences that it has been going ever since,” said Robbins.

Continued from page 4In cases where the

herd has been reduced by more than 30 per cent, 90 per cent of income from net sales can be deferred. Eli-gible producers can request the tax deferral when fil-ing their 2014 income tax returns. “Livestock produc-ers in the west have been challenged with extreme weather conditions this year. The tax relief offered by this program will pro-vide producers with an additional tool to man-age their forage shortfalls, allowing them to redirect money towards restocking next year’s breeding herd,” reasoned Ritz.

Extreme weather con-ditions in 2014, which included drought in British Columbia and Alberta, and excess moisture in Sas-katchewan and Manitoba, resulted in significant for-age shortages for livestock producers across western Canada. As a result, some producers are reducing their breeding herds.

In addition to the tax deferral, producers have access to assistance through existing Growing Forward 2 Business Risk Management programs, which include AgriInsur-ance, AgriStability and AgriInvest.
