1 To fans, Betty White will forever be the oversexed Sue Ann Nivens, the eternally innocent Rose Nylund, or, to a new generation, an outrageous nonagenarian who played beer pong with Jimmy Fallon. Now, the beloved entertainment icon, who celebrates her 80th year in show business this year — the longest career in the history of TV — is the subject of Betty White: First Lady of Television. A true television pioneer, she was the first woman to produce a national TV show, the first woman to star in a sitcom, the first woman to receive an Emmy nomination, and the first woman to ever appear on television, given her performance on an experimental broadcast in 1938. “I’ve worked nearly 80 years in television, and finally I made it to PBS,” said White. In 1968, Arthur Ashe was the first ever US Open men’s singles champion, and the first-ever African-American to win a men’s singles title at a Grand Slam Championship. In 1973 the US Open was the first Grand Slam tournament to award equal prize money to both men and women. And in 1987, Martina Navratilova pulled off a rare feat, winning the “triple crown” in tennis, becoming the champion in women’s singles, women’s double, and mixed doubles. The tournament and its stars also help teach the game they love to kids across New York City communities. Clinics take place year-round, in the shadow of Arthur Ashe Stadium, and work to inspire children to enjoy the game and have fun. Treasures spoke with US Open tennis icons Billie Jean King, Roger Federer, Angelique Kerber (who just won the Wimbledon 2018 tournament), and Stan Wawrinka about their experiences playing in the hard-court tournament, and what winning in New York means to them. See the 10-time Tony Award-winning Best Musical, The Band’s Visit — now one of the most Tony Award-winning musicals in history. It rejoices in the way music brings us to life, brings us to laughter, brings us to tears, and ultimately, brings us together.

With an additional donation, enjoy a pair of orchestra or front mezzanine tickets for “one of the most ravishing musicals ever” (The New York Times) on SEPTEMBER 17 or SEPTEMBER 23 at Ethel Barrymore Theatre in NYC. For a list of upcoming WLIW21 events, visit wliw.org/ticketbooth or call 800.767.2121.
