MEDIA EXPOSURE

We assessed electronic media exposure in the home with a widely used method, namely, a 24-hour recall diary based on an interview with the mother. We asked the mother to provide information about all electronic media (television, videos/DVDs, movies, and games) to which the infant had been exposed on the most recent typical day, including name and duration (in minutes) of each program. We asked the mother to include all programs for which the infant was present and awake, from the infant’s awakening in the morning until going to sleep for the night. Information from the diary was then used to calculate our 2 study variables:

1.Total duration of exposure (in minutes): We calculated total daily duration by adding together the duration of each exposure for the child during the 24-hour period.

2.Content of exposure (in minutes): We assessed program content using information obtained from industry rating systems and a consumer media Web site (TV Parental Guidelines,22 TV Guide,23 and the Motion Picture Association of America).24 Media content was categorized while masked to outcomes, using a classification system developed by some of us10,21:

Educational young child–oriented programs consisted primarily of those with educational content intended for children 2 to 6 years old, including live action and animated programs (eg, Sesame Street and Blue’s Clues).

In addition, media marketed as infant-directed and educational (eg, Baby Einstein and Brainy Baby) was also included in

children younger than 2 years should have no media exposure. In part, the increasing exposure of infants and toddlers to various types of media has resulted from the emergence of media content specifically geared toward infants and toddlers and marketed as educational. Children from families with low socioeconomic status (SES) are likely to be most vulnerable to any adverse effects of media exposure on early child development because they have been documented to have the greatest exposure to media and are at increased risk in general for disparities in early development, school readiness, and educational achievement.

In this study, we sought to assess whether duration and content of media exposure at age 6 months were related to later developmental outcomes at age 14 months. We had 2 hypotheses: first, that total duration of media exposure in infancy would be adversely related to developmental outcomes, and second, that associations between media exposure and developmental outcomes would vary depending on content, with the greatest adverse effects seen for non-educational content.

We performed a longitudinal analysis of mother-infant dyads participating in the Bellevue Project for Early Language, Literacy, and Education Success, a study assessing the role of primary care interventions in promoting child development through enhanced shared reading and play. Two interventions, the Video Interaction Project and Building Blocks, were studied in the larger project; each was designed to enhance shared reading and play.

Enrollment of consecutive eligible mother-infant dyads was performed in the postpartum unit of Bellevue Hospital Center, New York, New York, an urban public hospital serving at-risk families. Inclusion criteria were intention to receive pediatric primary care at our institution for at least 3 years, English or Spanish as the primary language, uncomplicated full-term delivery, no early intervention eligibility, the mother as the primary care-giver, ability to contact the mother, mother’s age being at least 18 years, and no significant maternal medical problems, as described previously.We obtained written informed consent from parents before participation. Approval for studies involving human cohort individuals was obtained from the New York University School of Medicine Institutional Review Board and Bellevue Hospital Center Research Committee.

The independent variables were total duration and content of media exposure at age 6 months. The dependent variables were cognitive and language development at age14 months. We also assessed potential confounders, including home environmental factors, and family socio demographic characteristics.

this category; however, there was a limited number of exposures to this type of media.

Noneducational young child–oriented programs consisted of those without educational content intended for children 2 to 6 years old. Examples include action cartoons such as Sponge-Bob SquarePants that are intended for young children and contain little or no violence.

Older child/adult–oriented programs consisted of those considered appropriate for school-aged children (7 years and older) and teenagers but not for younger children on the basis of violence and other such content. Examples of older child–oriented programs include Xiaolin Showdown. Adult-oriented programs consisted of those not oriented toward children but adults, of genres including news, sports, game, talk, variety, soap opera, drama, and comedy. Examples include Good Morning America (talk show), La Fea Más Bella (soap opera), and Law & Order (drama).

This study has some limitations. First, although the use of media diaries allowed the collection of detailed information regarding content, we must acknowledge the possibility that data collected via this assessment tool may under

typical day. Second, there was limited exposure to young child–oriented noneducational media in this sample, which reduced our ability to draw conclusions about its

effect. Regarding young child–oriented educational media, most of the exposure was to preschool-oriented educational media, and there was limited exposure to infant-directed media such as Baby Einstein, which prevented us from analyzing this exposure separately. Third, lower effects on expressive compared with receptive language tests may reflect limited expressive language at

expressive language might be seen for older children. Fourth, our results apply to exposure in infants from families with low SES, primarily from a Latino immigrant background, and may not be generalizable to children in families with greater economic resources. Finally, our results may be specific for the infant–early toddler period studied, given rapid changes in development and changes in content of exposure over time, with educational television representing a greater proportion of exposure.

In conclusion, overall exposure and exposure to older child/adult–oriented content were associated with lower

months. Findings from this study provide strong support for the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation of no media exposure before age 2 years. These findings also cast doubt on the potential for benefit from educational programming in infancy. However, more research is needed regarding what would constitute educational programming during early childhood before definite conclusions can be reached. Given the substantial amount of exposure beginning in early infancy in families with low SES, whose children are at greatest risk for adverse developmental outcomes, these findings suggest that media exposure represents a substantial public health problem. Advocacy efforts and public health interventions will be necessary to reduce exposure and optimize developmental outcomes.

With 130 kilowatts on tap and a linear torque of 380 Newton meter there was nothing that could stop this lovely car from climbing the highest mountain or just cruise along on the N1 at low revolutions.The car has fantastic road presence, something I saw as all traffic made way for me in the fast lane into Worcester. Maybe they knew something I was yet to realize, maybe it was the very distinctive Audi grille that told them there is a very special car in their rear view mirror, maybe it was the look of that long bonnet closing in on them…

Driving the car in its Dynamic setting really got the vehicle going. With 8 gears in its auto box the car gives you reason to play with its shift paddles. Whether you want to cruise or accelerate, this Big Easy has the best of both worlds on offer. And brakes that will get you to a standstill in a matter of seconds.

I found the cars suspension to be soft, soaking up all bumps Du Toits threw at it, yet cornering with all four wheels planted firmly, especially under spirited driving. Not a sound was heard from the engine bay, even at close to 5000 rpm as I gave the turbo-diesel chance to clear its lungs.

The cockpit is unmistakably Audi, generous use of wood and leather makes you feel special, cocooned safely inside. This car will happily transport 4 – 5 adults with ease, the big boot swallowing loads of luggage at the drop of a hat.

I know the Audi competes with the BMW 5-series and the Mercedes E-class, it’s in the same price range and therefore one to be considered seriously. Being part of the Teutonic three counts in its favour, and I must admit driving an Audi puts you in a special segment. Vorsprung Durch Teknik and all that. You just can’t go wrong.

When I was asked to write a motoring review about the new Audi A6 2.0 Tdi I must admit I had my reservations. Not so much because the car in question was an Audi but it was a BIG Audi with what I though was a small engine. I quickly realized my mistake.

The term Big Easy came to mind as I traversed the slopes of Du Toits Kloof on my way to Worcester, the big car with the two litre turbo-diesel chugged along majestically. I will never think of diesel engines as being noisy and smelly again, I retract all views I have had in the past, in short, I am converted!

Die Paarlse wynland se prestasies vanjaar met Chenin blanc en Pinotage, Suid-Afrika se bekende plaaslike wyne waarmee min of geen ander land kan kompeteer as dit by volume en konstante gehalte kom nie, skyn helder.

Dit is vir ‘n baie groot groep wynprodusente die kultivars wat die Kaap se unieke verkoopspunt is. Dit sluit in mooi toegank-like wyne om bloot te geniet en top gehalte vollyf wyne vir smaaklik sluk saam met heerlike geregte. Dit is nogal insiggewend dat die Paarlse wynland die afgelope tyd top presteerders was met beide hierdie plaaslike identiteitswyne. Chenin blanc beslaan van die meeste wingerde in Suid-Afrika en die afgelope tien jaar het daar ‘n sterk bewustheid van hierdie kultivar in ‘n top gehalte rigting na vore getree. Suid-Afrika produseer sekerlik vandag van die wêreld se hoogste gehalte Chenin blanc wyne met houtbehandeling en sonder houtbehandeling.

In beide hierdie Chenin blanc-style het die Paarlse wynland by die 2013 Veritas Toekennings heel bo uitgeblink. Die enigste ongehoute Chenin Blanc in Suid-Afrika wat vanjaar ‘n Dubbelgoud Veritas Toekenning ontvang het, van die meer as 50 inskrywings, is die Windmeul Kelder Chenin Blanc 2013. LAURINDA HOFMEYER

'n Kaggelvuur knetter in die sitkamer van die bekende liedjieskrywer en toonsetter Laurinda Hofmeyr se huis hier teen die hang van Paarlberg. Ek sit en verkyk myself aan die ou portrette wat die mure versier.

Teen ‘n muur staan ‘n groot bruin klavier. Dit is by die einste klavier waar Laurinda haar musiek-toorkunsies doen met van die land se bekendste digters, asook lewe gee aan haar eie stories en verhale wat sy deur middel van musiek vertel. “Ek is lief vir die klavier omdat’n mens ‘n hele orkes se musiek daarop kan speel. Met ‘n kitaar en viool is ‘n mens effe beperk.” Sy en haar man, Jantjie, woon al sedert 1995 in die Paarl. “Voor dit was ons vir ‘n jaar en ‘n half oorsee en voor dit was ons ‘n jaar in Pietersburg, pas nadat ons getrou het.”

Die twee se spore loop eintlik verder terug. Sy was in ‘n plaasskool in die Oos-Vrystaat en het in standerd 5 by die Laerskool Lynnwood ingeval toe haar ouers Pretoria toe getrek het. “Toe ek by my nuwe laerskool begin, het ek al die manlike onderwysers Oom genoem,” vertel sy met ‘n lekker lag uit die maag.

Op ‘n dag het sy ‘n gedig in die klas opgesê en die juffrou was so beïndruk, sy het die kleine Laurinda na elke klas geneem om die gedig op te sê, “en dit is waar Jantjie my die eerste keer gesien het – die ‘weird meisie’ wat hierdie lang gedig opgesê het”. Sy en Jantjie was saam in die Hoërskool Menlopark en eers in standard 8 het hulle mekaar leer ken. “Ek het in standerd 9 besluit om hom nader te hark (lag) en so het ons aan en af uitgegaan tot ons getrou het.”

Die paartjie het in 1995 in die Paarl beland nadat Jantjie ‘n werk by Paarl Hospitaal gekry het en hulle hier wortel geskiet. “Ek geniet die Paarl vreeslik baie,” vertel sy opgewonde. “Die dorp is groot, maar het sy eie karakter, ‘n amperse plattelandse karakter wat ek geniet.” Die Paarl is die hoeksteen van Afrikaans en dié taal lê haar na aan die hart. “Ek is ongelukkig nie eintlik baie goed tweetalig nie. Ek is Afrikaans. Dis die taal wat kleur en tekstuur vir my het, wat nodig is as mens woorde met musiek wil trou.”

Haar liefde vir musiek kom van haar ouers af. “My pa het viool gespeel en my ma klavier en ek onthou nog goed dat ek as kind saans wakker geword en gelê en luister het hoe hulle twee saam musiek maak. Dit was so romanties.”

Die Anura Pinotage Reserve 2010 is by die Novare SA Terroir Wyntoekennings aangewys as die nasionale wenner van Pino-tage, die Anura Pinotage Reserve 2011 as ‘n Absa Top 10 Pinotage wenner en die Anura LB Cape Blend 2012 as een van die vyf Perold Absa Cape Blend wenners.

Met die Cape Blend wyne moet minstens 30% of meestens 70% van die versnit uit ons inheemse Pinotage bestaan, vandaar die naam Cape Blend, oftewel Kaapse Versnit. Vier van vanjaar se tien finaliswyne uit al die Kaapse versnit inskrywings om die top vyf aan te wys was uit die Paarl en een uit Wellington, naamlik die Anura LB Cape Blend 2012, KWV Abraham Perold Tributum 2011, Welbedacht Hat Trick 2010 en Windmeul Cape Blend 2012. Twee van hierdie wyne was onder die top 5 wenners, die Anura LB Cape Blend en KWV Abraham Perold Tributum.

In die Absa Top 10 Pinotage Kompetisie was vyf wyne uit die Paarl onder die twintig finaliswyne. Die Anura Pinotage Reserve 2011, Fairview Primo Pinotage 2011, KWV The Mentors Pinotage 2011, Windmeul Pinotage Reserve 2012 en Windmeul Pinotage 2011. Eersgenoemde was ook onder die

top tien.Verlede jaar het kelders uit die Paarl en Wellington ook twee van die Absa Top 10 Pinotage wenners en twee van die Perold Absa Cape Blend wenners opgelewer, eersge-noemde die Windmeul Reserve Pinotage 2011 en Wellington Wines La Cave Pinotage 2010, en laasgenoemde die KWV Perold Tributum 2010 en Windmeul Reserve Cape Blend 2010.

Suid-Afrika se sterk punt teenoor ander lande in die wêreld as dit by wyn kom, is die veelsydigheid van ons grond en klimaat wat daartoe lei dat die plaaslike wynbedryf vele top gehalte wyne van omtrent alle kultivarskan berei. Pinotage is nie erg hitte sensitief nie en Chenin blanc aard feitlik orals goed. Skynbaar is die Paarl-deel van die Boland ‘n uiters geskikte terroir vir hierdie rooiwyn- en witwyn-druiwe. Die suksesre-sep is altyd goeie spanwerk tussen die wingerdboukundiges en wynmakers. Topgehalte druiwe word dan deeglik in die kelder benut vir die heel beste in die bottel.

Een van die uitgesoekte bestemmings om die Kaapse wynland se eiesoortige Chenin blanc en Pinotage wyne op te spoor, is beslis in en rondom die Paarl.

'n Kaggelvuur knetter in die sitkamer van die bekende liedjieskrywer en toonsetter Laurinda Hofmeyr se huis hier teen die hang van Paarlberg. Ek sit en verkyk myself aan die ou portrette wat die mure versier.

Teen ‘n muur staan ‘n groot bruin klavier. Dit is by die einste klavier waar Laurinda haar musiek-toorkunsies doen met van die land se bekendste digters, asook lewe gee aan haar eie stories en verhale wat sy deur middel van musiek vertel. “Ek is lief vir die klavier omdat’n mens ‘n hele orkes se musiek daarop kan speel. Met ‘n kitaar en viool is ‘n mens effe beperk.” Sy en haar man, Jantjie, woon al sedert 1995 in die Paarl. “Voor dit was ons vir ‘n jaar en ‘n half oorsee en voor dit was ons ‘n jaar in Pietersburg, pas nadat ons getrou het.”

Die twee se spore loop eintlik verder terug. Sy was in ‘n plaasskool in die Oos-Vrystaat en het in standerd 5 by die Laerskool Lynnwood ingeval toe haar ouers Pretoria toe getrek het. “Toe ek by my nuwe laerskool begin, het ek al die manlike onderwysers Oom genoem,” vertel sy met ‘n lekker lag uit die maag.

Op ‘n dag het sy ‘n gedig in die klas opgesê en die juffrou was so beïndruk, sy het die kleine Laurinda na elke klas geneem om die gedig op te sê, “en dit is waar Jantjie my die eerste keer gesien het – die ‘weird meisie’ wat hierdie lang gedig opgesê het”. Sy en Jantjie was saam in die Hoërskool Menlopark en eers in standard 8 het hulle mekaar leer ken. “Ek het in standerd 9 besluit om hom nader te hark (lag) en so het ons aan en af uitgegaan tot ons getrou het.”

Die paartjie het in 1995 in die Paarl beland nadat Jantjie ‘n werk by Paarl Hospitaal gekry het en hulle hier wortel geskiet. “Ek geniet die Paarl vreeslik baie,” vertel sy opgewonde. “Die dorp is groot, maar het sy eie karakter, ‘n amperse plattelandse karakter wat ek geniet.” Die Paarl is die hoeksteen van Afrikaans en dié taal lê haar na aan die hart. “Ek is ongelukkig nie eintlik baie goed tweetalig nie. Ek is Afrikaans. Dis die taal wat kleur en tekstuur vir my het, wat nodig is as mens woorde met musiek wil trou.”

Haar liefde vir musiek kom van haar ouers af. “My pa het viool gespeel en my ma klavier en ek onthou nog goed dat ek as kind saans wakker geword en gelê en luister het hoe hulle twee saam musiek maak. Dit was so romanties.”

Biokinetici, �sioterapeute, sportdokters en kondisionerings afrigters – dis die name van mense wat verseker dat ons land se top sportlui so min as moontlik in die teater en so veel as moontlik op die veld is. Vele ure en rande word bestee aan die voorkoming en behandeling van beserings op professionele vlak, maar wat van Jan-alleman? Wat van die van ons wat dag na dag in die kantoor deurbring en wanneer ons vir ontspanning ons tekkies wil aantrek, of selfs net voor die rekenaar wil opstaan, voel hoe die pyne ons terughou?

Die meerderheid van pyne is die gevolg van impak beserings, oorgebruik en/of verkeerde postuur. Alhoewel mens nooit sal kan voorkom dat ongelukke gebeur nie, is daar wel iets te doen aan die laasgenoemde twee oorsake. Oorgebruik beserings is die oorsaak van herhalende bewegingspatrone wat swakplekke in die liggaam ooreis, terwyl ‘n verkeerde postuur dieselfde uitwerking het net as gevolg van stilsit en beweeg in ‘n vaste postuur vir ure - selfs jare - aaneen. ‘n Gebalan-seerde oefenprogram en aandag aan stabilserende, of ‘core’, spiere is van kardinale belang om te verseker dat die liggaam sterk genoeg is, om jou the beskerm teen moontlike pyne.

Hierdie vername ‘core’spiere verwys nie bloot na ons maagspiere, soos algemeen geglo word nie, maar eerder na al die stabiliserende spiere wat die skelet regop hou terwyl die groter spiere beweging uitvoer. Soos die ‘core’ van ‘n appel vertikaal loop, so ook loop ons ‘core’ van kop tot tone. Ongelukkig gebeur dit gereeld dat verkeerde bewegingspatrone plaasvind a.g.v. die stabiliseerders wat nie hul funksie korrek uitvoer nie. Dis dan waar die hulp van professionele persone, soos Biokinetici, ingeroep kan word. ‘n Biokinetikus sal ‘n volledige evaluasie doen om moontlike wanbalanse en spierswakhede te identi�seer. Indien daar wanbalanse/swakhede is, sal oefeninge voorgeskryf word om die problem areas aan te spreek en sodoende kroniese pyne te voorkom. Dis baie belangrik om proaktief te wees en te weet dat hulp beskikbaar is en dat pyn nie ‘n gewe hoef te wees in jou alledaagse lewe nie, maak nie saak hoe oud of jonk jy is nie.

Die Viljoen Juweliers groep is al vir 3 geslagte onder die bekwame bestuur van die Viljoen familie en is gelykstaande aan professionele en hulpvaardige diens wat ook al die kliënt se behoeftes mag wees. Nie net behartig hul die verkope van unieke juweliersware nie, maar doen hul ook die herstel en vervaardiging daarvan.

Hierdie merkwaardige juweliersfamilie het sy oorsprong in Worcester maar het met die jare tot Paarl en Stellenbosch uitgebrei.

Viljoen Juweliers het in Worcester sy ontstaan gehad toe die wyle J.L. Viljoen(snr) in 1950 die onderneming in die Bolandse dorp gevestig het. In 1956 moes wyle A.J (Spyker) die onderneming oorneem op die jong ouderdom van 19jr na die afsterwe van sy pa. Spyker Viljoen het oor jare sinoniem met juweliersware in Worcester en elders

begin raak. Nadat Wiekus Viljoen, seun van Spyker Viljoen by sy pa in 1986 aangesluit het, is die bekende Franz Juweliers in Paarl in 1992 deur Viljoen Juweliers oorgeneem maar dit was maar net die begin.

Die jonger seun, Howie, het ook by die besigheid aangesluit met Wiekus wat toe die Paarl tak begin bestuur het. Wiekus was nog in Worcester woonagtig en het vanaf 2001 tot en met 2006 daagliks vanuit Worcester na Paarl en terug gereis. Viljoen Juweliers verskuif in 2005 hul tak uit die middedorp van Paarl na die Paarl Mall. Die gevoel was dat die middedorp leeg loop en die Paarl Mall was die aangewese plek.

Wiekus neem ook die besluit in 2006 om na Paarl te verhuis na 43 jaar se verblyf in Worcester en word ‘n ware Paarliet in murg en been.

Wat Viljoen Juweliers so besonders maak is dat dit nie net een van die min familie-besit juweliers-groepe in die land is nie maar dat Wiekus ook as hoogs-opgeleide juwelier sy vinger op die pols hou van wat nuut en vars in die bedryf is. So woon hy gereeld juweliers-skoue by in Las Vegas, Hong Kong, London en Bangkok en kom met vars idees terug.

Hy het ook sy Diamonds Diploma aan die Gemological Institute of America (GIA) behaal en hy het selfs vir‘n paar maande in Engeland by ‘n juwelier gaan werk.

Sy 28 jaar in besigheid dra natuurlik baie by tot die sukses van Viljoen Juweliers, en vir uitdagings sien Wiekus kans, soveel so dat hy die bekende H.Hohsl Juweliers in

egter nie net oor besigheid nie maar hy voel hy het ook ‘n sosiale verantwoordelikheid en hy leef dit uit as lid van die Paarl Rotariërs. Verder reël hy ook die bekende j aarlikse Viljoen Jewellers Ladies Classic Golfday en dit het deur die jare tot een van die groot sosiale geleenthede op die Paarl se sport kalender gegroei.

Wiekus is dan ook ‘n familie man.Sy oudste dogter Mareth, studeer tans B.Com Bemarking en Wiekus neem haar saam op sy reise oorsee waar kan. Sy tweede oudste dogter, Christine, is tans in Gr.11 in Girls High en sy vrou, Getha, ook ‘n gebore Viljoen staan hom by op vele terreine in die besigheid .

Die Worcester tak waar alles begin het is vandag nog steeds in familiebesit en word deur Wiekus se broer Howie Viljoen bedryf. Hierdie merkwaardige familie staan vir geen uitdaging terug en hulle het hulself deur die jare as Bolandse volksbesit gevestig.

En dit is waar haar liefde vir musiek begin het. Op hoërskool het sy musiek as vak geneem en het die grade BMusEd. en BMusHons aan die Universiteit van Pretoria behaal. Sy het liedjies vir onder andere Laurika Rauch geskryf, en dit was hierdie toonsettings van gedigte soos Ek Het ‘n Huisie By Die See, Kabouterliefde en vele meer wat Suid-Afrikaners van haar laat kennis neem het.

In 2004 is sy gevra om by ‘n dinee waar oud-president Nelson Mandela vereer is, die Afrikaanse vertaling van ‘n pryslied Vaarwel aan Madiba, geskryf deur oud-President Thabo Mbeki (en in Afrikaans vertaal deur Koos Oosthuizen en Antjie Krog), te toonset en uit te voer.

Teen ‘n muur staan ‘n groot bruin klavier. Dit is by die einste klavier waar Laurinda haar musiek-toorkunsies doen met van die land se bekendste digters, asook lewe gee aan haar eie stories en verhale wat sy deur middel van musiek vertel. “Ek is lief vir die klavier omdat’n mens ‘n hele orkes se musiek daarop kan speel. Met ‘n kitaar en viool is ‘n mens effe beperk.” Sy en haar man, Jantjie, woon al sedert 1995 in die Paarl. “Voor dit was ons vir ‘n jaar en ‘n half oorsee en voor dit was ons ‘n jaar in Pietersburg, pas nadat ons getrou het.”

Die twee se spore loop eintlik verder terug. Sy was in ‘n plaasskool in die Oos-Vrystaat en het in standerd 5 by die Laerskool Lynnwood ingeval toe haar ouers Pretoria toe getrek het. “Toe ek by my nuwe laerskool begin, het ek al die manlike onderwysers Oom genoem,” vertel sy met ‘n lekker lag uit die maag.

Op ‘n dag het sy ‘n gedig in die klas opgesê en die juffrou was so beïndruk, sy het die kleine Laurinda na elke klas geneem om die gedig op te sê, “en dit is waar Jantjie my die eerste keer gesien het – die ‘weird meisie’ wat hierdie lang gedig opgesê het”. Sy en Jantjie was saam in die Hoërskool Menlopark en eers in standard 8 het hulle mekaar leer ken. “Ek het in standerd 9 besluit om hom nader te hark (lag) en so het ons aan en af uitgegaan tot ons getrou het.”

Recycling for your average suburban household in South Africa is a bit of a schlep: the infrastructure for collecting recyclable material isn’t really in place – yet. Households generally have to separate their rubbish and take the recyclables to a municipal drop-off centre or a buy-back centre because there’s not much in the way of kerbside collection. Many people just can’t be bothered. But, there are also many people out there who would recycle if they knew how to. This guide aims to help you get started.

HOW GOOD IS SOUTH AFRICA AT RECYCLING? The recovery rates for various materials are as follows: Cans: 69%; Paper: 59%; Glass: About 25 %; Plastic: About 17%.Informal recyclers recover much of this material from dustbins and landfill sites. This is not ideal, firstly from the point of view of the health and safety of the recyclers. But also because the recyclable material is contaminated with other waste. First prize would be if households sorted their waste, so that “uncontaminated” recyclable material could be collected.

WHY YOU SHOULD RECYCLE? Firstly, the Earth’s resources are not infinite so we shouldn’t waste them. And, you know that sign that reads “Leave this place in the same condition as you’d like to find it”? Well, the same applies to the planet. You’d rather see your grandchildren running through piles of fallen autumn leaves than piles of discarded rubbish (wouldn’t you?). More specifically, the government wants to reduce the amount of plastic, cans, paper and glass going to landfills by 70 percent in the next decade or so. To meet that target, households need to stop simply throwing away rubbish and start implementing the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED?1. METAL Colddrink and beer cans ; Food tins; Metal lids of glass jars; Aluminium; cans (eg, Red Bull), foil and foil packaging; paint, oil and aerosol cans (leave labels on them so recyclers can see whether they contain hazardous material). Rusty cans can be recycled.

2. GLASS Beverage bottles; Food jars such as tomato sauce, jam and mayonnaise bottles. The following CANNOT be recycled: Drinking glasses; Light bulbs – ordinary and energy-saving compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) – and fluorescent tubes. NB CFLs and fluorescent tubes should not be thrown away with ordinary rubbish.

They contain mercury, a toxin that can leach into the soil and groundwater if not disposed of properly. Take your old CFLs to the drop-off points at Pick n Pay and Woolworths stores where they will be disposed of safely. If you don’t have this option, place your old CFLs in a sealed plastic bag before you throw them in the bin.

3. PAPER White office paper; Magazines and books (as long as nothing islaminated)Newspaper; Cardboard (boxes and cereal boxes). The following CANNOT be recycled: Laminated or waxy paper; Punch confetti; Carbon paper Stickers

4. PLASTICS Plastics are made from oil, a non-renewable resource, and much of the plastic packaging we use every day is recyclable. Ice cream and milk containers, fabric softener bottles, plastic bags and even cling-wrap can all be recycled. The easiest way to determine whether a plastic product is recyclable is by looking for its recycling logo. There are seven plastic recycling logos and most plastic packaging is imprinted with one of them. The logos tell you what type of plastic a container is made of. 5. TETRAPAK Fruit juice and milk containers look like they’re made out of paper, but they are lined with aluminium foil and plastic so they must be recycled separately. Tetra Pak has opened its first small-scale recycling facility in Germiston, Gauteng, where its packaging is recycled into roof tiles, furniture and stationery. 6. BATTERIES Disposable batteries are not recycled – this is apparently because the material recovery rate is too small to make recycling economically viable. But they should not be thrown away with ordinary household waste either, because they contain toxic chemicals that can leach into the soil and groundwater. Rechargeable batteries, on the other hand, are recyclable. Add to this the fact that they last a lot longer than ordinary batteries and you have a compelling argument to buy rechargeables from now on.

Chances are, at one time or another, somebody -- your fourth-grade teacher or an uncle concerned about your future prospects has explained to you that most people only use 10 percent of their brains. This tidbit, which has been circulating since at least the mid-1930s and is still repeated in contemporary self-help books, often seems to be shared for motivational purposes: If you'd only wake up, smell the coffee and put more of your precious gray matter to use, you'd surely leave behind those legions of ordinary neuron-squandering dolts and climb to success.

There's only one catch: However widely accepted it is, the idea that people manage to function normally while utilizing such a miniscule portion of their brains is total nonsense. For years, doctors, brain researchers and science journalists have been explaining patiently to anyone who would listen that there is no scientific basis for what they call the 10-percent brain myth. Similarly, prestigious and credible publica-tions like Scientific American and the New York Times have sought to dispel it as well, with little effect. In a non-scientific Internet poll on the Web site Helium.com, for example, 52 percent of respondents believed incorrectly that humans use only 10 percent of their brains, while 48 percent correctly disagreed. The mistaken notion is so pervasive, in fact, that in a study published in the Journal of Psychology in 1998, research-ers found that college psychology majors, who presumably should know better, were as likely to believe it as other students.

"Despite much contrary data and its affront to logic, this hoary myth refuses to die, no doubt because of (you guessed it) the considerable uplift and encouragement it affords, not to mention the profit it generates for those who hawk self-improvement products that exploit the myth," neuroscientists Sergio Della Sala and Barry L. Beyerstein once lamented in an essay. "If 90 percent of the brain were really a cerebral

spare tire, as many of these hucksters claim, learning to tap its unused capacity would be the route to fabulous achievement, riches and fame -- even, according to many New Age entrepreneurs, the pathway to psychic powers and transcendent bliss" Do we really only use 10% of our mind? How do you cook up an idea that's so plausible and appeal-ing, yet completely mistaken? You start by misinterpreting the incom-plete scientific knowledge of the time. Then, take a couple of esteemed men of science and misquote them.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, medical researchers who studied the brains of animals and stroke victims discovered that different brain areas controlled different activities. In the 1870s, for example, German physiologists Gustav Fritsch and Eduard Hitzig electrically stimulated a spot in a dog's brain and noticed that the dog moved its right front paw. When they surgically removed that tissue from two other dogs, they noticed that the dogs not only couldn't use the paw, but seemed unaware of it [source: Finger]. Over the next half-century, other researchers eagerly zapped various parts of animal and human brains in an attempt to map brain function. But they were only able to figure out what about 10 percent of the brain did, because when they stimulated the other 90 percent, no muscles twitched. Scientists labeled that area the silent cortex because its function was unknown. We now know that's the area that, among other things, controls language and abstract thinking

Since then, self-help authors have attributed the idea that we only use 10 percent of the brain's capacity to Albert Einstein -- a curious source, since his expertise was in physics, not neuroscience. In 2004, a thorough search by staffers of the Einstein archives at California Institute of Technology, however, found no evidence that he ever made such a statement. EVOLUTION OF TREATMENT

Substance use disorders and addiction has been around for ages. People have been using alcohol or drugs just as much and for the same reasons today as in the past and for many it ends up in the chaos and devastation of addiction.

So what is different in our understanding now and how has treatment evolved in the process?

“Treatment” for addiction has only been around since the late 1940’s. Before then people experiencing addiction was judged as moral weaklings, ostracized out of communities and placed in sanatoriums. It was rather not talked about and families and the addicts themselves felt ashamed and embarrassed. Even the professional doctors and psychia-trists did not want anything to do with addicts and no one did research or cared about treatment. Addiction was seen as a kind of “personality disorder” and addicts labelled as “bad losers” that cannot or selfishly did not want to stop their bad habits. So it’s their own fault for not trying hard enough to control their drinking or drug-ging. Unfortunately because of ignorance and a lack of education, this is still a wide held belief today.

Smith and Bill Wilson established and developed a

of AA and it became the recovery “bible” for many. This was a program leaning heavily on spiritual principals and “moral psychology” called the Minnisota 12-step program. It was however a strong social support program and not inherently established as a treatment model. However, the 12-steps were incorporated as a treatment model, mainly

because treatment was done by ex-addicts that strongly believed in the 12-step program. Most treatment centres even today are run by ex-addicts as a result of a strong believe that “only an addict can help another addict”.

In 1949 came the first residential treatment centre in America called Hazelden. The Hazelden model of treat-ment also leant heavily on the 12-steps and it is still the model of treatment used in many treatment facilities all around the world up to today.Addiction treatment unfortunately became an industry with a “bad” name and dismal success rate. It was mostly run by non-professionals under the cloak of anonymity without regulation or other regulatory requirements. The program of total abstinence only worked for “those that worked the program” and the success rate at best were

people in any given treatment program will not be success-ful. No wonder people believed that alcohol and drug addiction treatment didn’t work.

In the late 1980’s and throughout the 1990’s things started to change. The concept of “dual diagnoses” and co-occurring disorders brought psychiatry back into the picture. Up to then total abstinence was seen as the first goal before addressing any underlying psychopathology.

concurrent psychiatric treatment. In the late 1990’s and since the beginning of the 2000’s huge progress were made through neuroscientific research and understanding of addiction. Through the advances in high tech medical tools like PET (Positron emission tomography) scans and fMRI (Functional magnetic resonance imaging) we can now study brain function while people are alive and with detailed accuracy see what areas of the brain are affected and under what conditions these areas malfunction. We know now with no uncertainty that addiction is a long-term chronic brain disease with fundamental physical brain damages that leads to uncontrolled obsessive and compulsive drug seeking. It is not a moral failing or just selfish and bad behaviour. Addiction is now clearly a medical issue.

So, here enter the medical field in the search of a medication to heal the damage. Although a pharmaceutical “silver bullet” has not been found yet there are huge strides and great progress in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). There are well researched and evidence based medications available that can help in withdrawal, controlling cravings and relapse prevention. This opened a much needed field in treatment as an adjunct (not the all in all) to treatment as usual. Even Hazelden the original treatment experts announced in November

2012 that they are incorporating medication assisted treatment in adjunct to their 12-step based protocol.

In addition, because of neuroscience research, we now have a new and better understanding of the craving process and we can use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help in much needed behaviour change to prevent the craving process. We also have better counselling techniques like Motivational Interviewing (MI), a non-confrontational client-centred approach to motivation for change. This is just two of the many new “tools” that treatment can offer since our better understanding through science. Unfortunately this is new and sometimes difficult for the “old school” in the treatment community that still believe very much only in the AA 12-steps. Although AA is a very good an effective social support and fellowship program, these new and evidence based treatment protocols cannot simply be ignored because it does not fit in with “treatment as usual”. To label treatment as “failure” because someone does not conform to the specific way it’s done is wrong and unfair. There is still an unnecessary gap between the science of addiction medicine and the treatment that people actually receive.

It is also important to know that what works for some does not necessarily work for all. One shoe does not fit all. An obvious example is that for many going away to rehab or being institutionalized is not an option and in many cases not medically necessary or indicated. Older adults or “baby boomers” might feel uncomfortable being in group treatment with mostly young people. They did not grow up in an era where group therapy was the norm and in this regard might also find going to AA or other self-help groups difficult. Some might also find it difficult to relate to young people that are in treatment for the “harder” drugs like cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine (“tik”). Many males and females today are also professionals and executives as the sole bread winners in the family or moms and dads that cannot go away to rehab.

Ek is Afrikaans. Dis die taal wat kleur en tekstuur vir my het, wat nodig is as mens woorde met musiek wil trou.”

Haar liefde vir musiek kom van haar ouers af. “My pa het viool gespeel en my ma klavier en ek onthou nog goed dat ek as kind saans wakker geword en gelê en luister het hoe hulle twee saam musiek maak. Dit was so romanties.”

HANNES VAN ZYL

Die Paarl gebaseerde kunstenaar Hannes van Zyl is ‘n man vol kwink-slae en besit ‘n borrelende lus vir die lewe. Dit was gou duidelik nadat ons mekaar by Adriaan se nuwe koffie-winkel, The Daily Coffee, ontmoet het vir ‘n onderhoud.

Hannes is gebore in Empangeni in Natal, en toe hy 4 jaar oud was het sy ouers verhuis en hulself in Nuweland in die Kaap kom vestig. Hannes het ook twee broers, Francois ( Ingenieur-ekonoom) en Aalwyn (tandarts).

Hannes het skoolgegaan in Grootte Schuur Laer- en Hoërskool en dit was dan ook geen wonder dat hy aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad gaan studeer het en sy graad in Argitektuur behaal het. Die veelsydige man het vir ongeveer 10 jaar by verskeie argitek-firmas as argitek gepraktiseer maar tog gevoel sy kreatiwiteit kom nie tot sy volle reg nie. In sy soeke na balans begin Hannes toe pottebakery klasse loop in die aande en vind hom besonder aangetrokke tot die kunsveld. Dit is ook nie lank of Hannes bereik ‘n keerpunt in sy lewe en besluit om sy argitek-loopbaan vaarwel toe te roep en skryf in vir ‘n graad kursus by die Universiteit van Natal. Met die kampus vir Skone Kunste in

Pietermaritzburg gesetel bevind Hannes hom op die ouderdom van 35 terug in die klas, by verre die oudste student maar ‘n man op ‘n missie! Soos Hannes vertel was die verskil in ouderdom tussen hom en die ander studente geen probleem nie en het hy lewenslange vriende gemaak.

Hannes studeer ‘n B.A Graad met Keramiek en Beeldhouwerk as hoofvakke en geniet dit terdeë. Dit was dan ook in sy eerste jaar dat een van sy lektore, Mrs. Sue Davies eendag vir hom sê “Hannes, you’re a painter!” Hannes het egter voortgegaan en in sy derde jaar Beeldhou-werk en Fotografie as hoofvakke geneem. Dit was ook nie lank nie en Hannes verwerf sy B.A in Skone Kunste, en dit op die ouderdom van 39! Na Hannes se studies kry hy ‘n pos as lektor by die Tegniese Kollege in Pietermaritsburg en gee vir 3 jaar klas in skilder en tekenkuns asook in fotografie. Dit is dan hier waar die gogga om self te begin skilder hom behoorlik byt en hy begin in sy vrye tyd sy hand hieraan waag.

Die Kaap roep hom egter en in 1989 doen hy aansoek en word die pos om as lektor Verrykingskursusse by die Paarl Tegniese Kollege klas te gee hom aangebied. Hy gee klas in skilderkuns, tekenkuns

'n Kaggelvuur knetter in die sitkamer van die bekende liedjieskrywer en toonsetter Laurinda Hofmeyr se huis hier teen die hang van Paarlberg. Ek sit en verkyk myself aan die ou portrette wat die mure versier.

Teen ‘n muur staan ‘n groot bruin klavier. Dit is by die einste klavier waar Laurinda haar musiek-toorkunsies doen met van die land se bekendste digters, asook lewe gee aan haar eie stories en verhale wat sy deur middel van musiek vertel. “Ek is lief vir die klavier omdat’n mens ‘n hele orkes se musiek daarop kan speel. Met ‘n kitaar en viool is ‘n mens effe beperk.” Sy en haar man, Jantjie, woon al sedert 1995 in die Paarl. “Voor dit was ons vir ‘n jaar en ‘n half oorsee en voor dit was ons ‘n jaar in Pietersburg, pas nadat ons getrou het.”

Pay attention to water temperature and quality. The best coffee is achieved when the water is between 195-202° F when it hits the coffee grounds. Many automatic drip coffeemakers cannot heat the water to that temperature when it starts out cold. If your coffee maker produces coffee with bitter or weak flavour, try adding room temperature or hot water. On the other hand, if you have a coffee maker that's known to make burnt-tasting coffee because the water is too hot for infusion, wet the coffee grounds first with 1/4 cup of the cold water. This temporarily prevents the grounds from exposure to too hot temperatures. It is best to use filtered or bottled water. Some people prefer using distilled or deionized water, which contains no minerals at all.

Why are we so overweight? Why are 1.5 billion people so overweight? And why do we stay so overweight in spite of all those revolutionary treatments available to us?

For the first time in history more people in the world are overfed than underfed. We’ve never gone to the gym so much, swallowed so many slimming shakes or went on so many diets. Yet the world keeps getting fatter and fatter.

Do scientists know why? Yes, they do. Can we do something about it? Yes, we can.

FIRST, LET’S CALL A SPADE A SPADE.

Until half a century ago, when people went to the movies, they

we eat at home have become bigger. The recipes in the most recent edition of ‘The Joy of Cooking’ call for the same ingredients and quantities as the edition of half a century ago. The difference however is on page one: previously these meals

You’ll be amazed. What and how much we eat falls in the category ‘not worth remembering’ a category in which we struggle to recall more than four of five events. Indeed, can you remember how much you spent on your credit card this month (your bank statement is telling)? Or how many phone calls you made (your phone bill is telling)? But be honest. If some people really ate what they wrote in that diary, they

Rule number two: if it sounds too good to be true, it is. Forget about all those revolutionary pills, shakes, sauna pants and night-headbands-to-dream-fat-away. All you lose is money, not weight.

Rule number three: beware of compensation, or what psycholo-gists call the licensing effect. The labels look promising enough. No-sugar-added here, low-fat there, slimmer’s-choice every-where. Do yourself a favor and read the nutritional label: most of those products contain just 10 – 25% less calories. But we confi-dently eat 34% more of them – after all, they can’t make us fat, can they?

GOOD HABITS

OK, so three rules about what NOT to do. Time to be a bit positive: what CAN we do to get to and stay on our ideal weight?It’s not only about what we eat. Equally important is why we eat, and how much, when and how.

Why do we eat? Because we’re hungry. Correct. Let me ask you a second question. Have you ever seen a fat squirrel, or a fat cheetah, or a fat springbok (apart from Os du Randt)? No, you haven’t. The reason is that animals in the wild eat when they are hungry and stop eating when they had enough. Humans are different. Half of our eating sessions are not initiated by hunger, but by totally differ-ent things: a colleague brought some birthday cake; you’re bored; you’re sitting in a movie; or simply, you see some food lying around. When you finish your main course, and you feel satisfied, don’t have a second helping. And skip your dessert. If you want a dessert, have a dessert, but make sure you only have a small main course. In other words, listen to your body, to your hunger and fullness signals.

Second point: the importance of what we eat. Health authorities have made it unnecessarily difficult and utterly confusing. High carbs, low fat. Low carbs, high fat. Saturated fat. Mono-unsaturated. Poly-unsaturated. Omega-3. Omega-6. Glycemic index. Glycemic content. Glycemic load. Who on earth can get head or tail on this stuff? This is rocket science! To eat a simple plate of food nowadays you need to be Einstein! Let me make it very simple for you. What’s there that you can never ever eat? Nothing. There is nothing that you can never ever eat. I’m not saying you should go wild on French fries or tiramisu every single day. Those are the occasional treats (allow yourself a treat now and again, remember?) If in your food choices you stay close to nature (meaning: never eat processed food or stuff in a wrapper), there are no good foods or bad foods. There are only good habits and bad habits.

Third point: the importance of how much we eat. I mentioned portion distortion. Now how do we know what an advisable portion is? Simple. Your meal should fit in your cupped hands. It doesn’t matter if some peas roll over the sides of course, but this is a good rule of thumb. Fourth point: the importance of when we eat.

What are we doing about that weight of ours? The first thing that comes to mind is…? Going on a diet. But which one? There are literally thousands of them. Google ‘diet’ and bingo, you get five hundred and twenty four million a websites in one fifth of a second. Decent amount of information, that. If you spend one minute on each website, you go through the whole lot in 997 years. Weird stuff aplenty. Acai berry diet, facial analysis diet, blood type diet, cheaters’ diets, hallelujah diet, world peace diet, ultimate tea diet, cookies diet, chocolate diet, popcorn diet, white wine diet. And the latest fad, the insect diet (want to be thin? Roaches are low fat and high protein).

Then there are the big shots: Atkins, Dukan, Paleo, Ornish, Zone, South Beach, Weight Watchers, New Glucose Revolu-tion. Millions upon millions bought the books. But where then are those millions upon millions that lost all that weight? They’re nowhere to be seen, because they regained all the weight. From all the people who go on a diet, 80% regains the weight (and more) within two years, and 90% within four years. All those diets have one thing in common: they all work. But they have also a second thing in common: they are unsus-tainable.

So they have a third thing in common: in the long term, none of them work. Diets are all about depriving, whereas food should be about providing. Let’s say you go on the hundred-days-no-chocolate-diet, and you stick it out, congratulations. What are you going to do on day hundred-and-one? Right, celebrate. And with what? With broccoli? Successful weight control does not come from restraint. It comes from relaxed restraint. Do allow yourself that treat now and again. I said: now and again. I did not say: five times per day. So rule number

//////////////////////An interesting study was done on mice. Two groups of mice had access to the same type of food and the same amount of food. One group had access to the food at regular intervals (meal times). The other one had access at irregular intervals. This second group ate over the whole test period far more than the first group, becoming fat, whereas the first group remained slim. The lesson for us? Have a routine. Many nutritionist think it is more important to have a healthy routine in your eating habits, than to be finicky about the calories.

Fifth point: the importance of how we eat. Two groups of mice had access to the same type of food, the same quantities, and at regular intervals. Yet one group still became fat. The group that remained slim was put in a quiet, relaxed environment. The other group, which became fat, in a stressful, noisy, crowded environment. The lesson for us? Never eat on the run. Your meal is a time-out. And eat slowly, so your fullness mechanism has time to kick in – which takes about twenty minutes.

Let me throw in a sixth point. Drinks can also make you seriously fat. A serving of any caloric drink, whether it’s cola, lemonade, fruit juice (even if no sugar is added) or alcohol contains the same amount of calories as two slices of bread of a cup of rice. Caloric drinks are actually a small snack. Cola and lemonade are liquid sweets. And after a full meal, can you then still eat a whole roast chicken? Admit you’ll struggle. But would you be able to down four glasses of wine? Piece of cake, no doubt. Here’s the frightening truth: the chicken and four glasses are equal in calories.

Last but not least: exercise. Although exercise is absolutely vital for good health it has vastly been overrated for weight loss. Eighty percent of weight control comes from proper eating habits, and just twenty percent from physical exercise (unless you go do extreme stuff like running two marathons per day). We often hear people complain: ‘Oh doc, I hurt my knee, so I could not exercise anymore, so I got fat.’ Utter nonsense. They got fat because they ate too much. So yes, remain active, but it does not have to be in a gym. Incorporate it in your daily life. Your office is on the tenth floor? Take the stairs to the tenth floor.

A MESSAGE FOR LIFE

Let’s wrap it up. If you want to get slimmer and stay slimmer, just keep two lines in mind:

1) Stay close to nature.2) You can eat anything, but in moderation.

PAARL MOUNTAIN RESERVE

Paarl is particularly known for its mountain or "Paarl Rock". The huge granite rock is formed by three rounded outcrops that make up Paarl Mountain. It is the second largest granite outcrop in the world and forms part of the Nature Reserve. The Paarl Mountain was declared a Nature Reserve in 1977. The Drakenstein Municipality is one of the few municipalities that administers a nature reserve.

Of birds and small animals there is no shortage. Some of the birds that have been recorded include the malachite sunbird (Nectarinia famosa), southern double-collared sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus), Cape sugarbird (Promerops cafer), swee waxbill (Coccopygia melanotis), Cape canary (Serinus canicollis), streaky-headed seedeater (Serinus gularis), the Protea canary (Serinus leucopterus) and the African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer).

The conservation of the Paarl Mountain Reserve is a long and on-going job, says nature conservation officer, Ms Louise de Roubaix. Nevertheless, continuous action over many years is showing good results as far as the removal of alien vegetation is concerned. All the removal work has been done by the Drakenstein Municipality staff and financed by the Municipality so it is understandably a slow job. According to Ms de Roubaix the 2000 hectare Reserve is divided into management units and the alien vegetation removed systematically on a five year rotational basis.

The most dominant alien plants species, include stinkbean (Paraserianthus lophanta), various pine species (Pinus spp), Euc species, acacia species such as Port Jackson (Acacia saligna), black wattle (Acacia mearnsii), rooikrans (Acacia cyclops), as well as hakea species.

Because of the reserve bordering on the urban edge of the town of Paarl, encroachment of horticultural and other weedy species from neighbouring private properties are a major challenge for the alien clearing program of the reserve, says

Ms de Robaix. All disturbed areas within the reserve, such as developed areas, infrastructures such as roads, dams, pipeline servitudes and road reserves, stimulate alien vegetation reoccurrence and densification.

The main indigenous tree species in the Reserve include the Cape saffron (Cassine piragua), sand olive (Dodonaea angustifo-lia), rock ash (Heeria argentea) Breede River yellowwood (Podocarpus elogatus) and the critically endangered silvertree (Leucadendron argenteum).

The types of vegetation occurring on Paarl Mountain is Bolnd Granite Mountain Fynbos, which has been classified as vulnerable, as well as Swartland Granite Renosterveld, which has been classified as critically endangered in the Biodiversity Priority Area Policy, SDF and the National Assessment commissioned by SANBI/Department of Environmental Affairs. For these, and other, reasons the removal of alien vegetation is vital.

Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve and remaining remnants of threatened vegetation currently form part of the core conservation area of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, with the adjacent areas forming the buffer area. The entire Erf1 on Paarl Mountain has been declared a National Monument and is being managed accordingly.

Fauna include small antelope such as grysbok, grey rhebuck and klipspringer. Other mammals include dassie (Procavia capensis), South African or Cape porcupine, (Hystrix africaeaus-tralis), the South African or Cape mountain hare (Lepus capensis), and a number of small rodents and insectivores. Predators recorded are caracal also known as the lynx or desert lynx (Caracal caracal), black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas), bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis), Cape genet (Genetta tigrina), Cape grey mongoose (Galerella pulverulenta), and water mongoose (Atilax paludinosus).

The fynbos landscape is dominated by the massive rounded granite rock formations set among wild olives, rock candlewoods and wagon trees. The Paarl Rock group overlooks the Paarl Valley and is an easy walk from the parking area. Good walking shoes are needed however. Access to the top of Bretagne Rock is possible with the help of a chain walkway. The difficult and dangerous one is Gordon’s Rock which is steep and not recommended except for well experienced hikers. Nevertheless, excellent views are to be had from all of these sets of ancient massive granite extrusions.

Fortunately they have not tackled the old pines at Paarl Rock itself so there is pleasant shade for vehicles and picnicking in the parking area there.

The removal of alien vegetation is being done to get the Reserve back to a pristine nature reserve with only indigenous vegetation. This is being done in nature reserves all over South Africa and supported by various government and non-government bodies. It is also a way of conserving soil water, South Africa being considered a relatively dry country. As Paarl develops further, water will become an important commodity so the conservation of groundwater, which slowly seeps into the water storage dams, need to be conserved, Alien vegetation is known to use excessive amounts of water and thus their removal is vital for the future water supply to Paarl.

There is also the conservation of the water storage dams on the mountain, Bethel, Nantes and Victoria. The author, have been

stocking the Bethel and Nantes dams with trout for the local trout fishing fraternity. It became very popular during those years and catch records were kept and analyzed on a regular basis. There was also bass (largemouth and smallmouth – Micropterus spp) along with Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) in some of the dams and had beenthere for quite some time before the trout were introduced. Presently the Bethel Dam has been cleared of all exotic fish and stocked with indigenous Cape whitefish

(witvis) or Berg-Breede River whitefish (Barbus andrewi). It is endemic to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, where it occurs in the Breede River's Brandvlei Dam and Sanddrift Dam, as well as the Hex River. Formerly, it was also found in and around the Berg River, but it seems to have disappeared from there, the result of predators, such as bass, and pollution of the river.

The Cape whitefish from Brandvlei Dam near Worcester was collected and stocked by the Drakenstein Municipality with the help of Cape Nature. The equally endangered indigenous Cape kurper (Sandelia capensis) currently occurs ‘naturally’ in the Bethel Dam. This small ‘minnow’ sized Cape kurper would have also been found in and around the Berg River in the past so is also a species with considerable conservation importance. Like the whitefish, its habitats too are being destroyed and its numbers declining. Various factors are to blame, including introduced predators, damming, pollution and climatic changes.

In the future fishing will not be allowed on Bethel Dam because of the endangered status of the whitefish (the Cape kurper is too small a fish to be of any angling importance). The dam will be used as a breeding dam solely. No final decision has been made by the municipality on whether it will restock any of the other dams in future with any alien fish species, such as trout or bass.

To me it is the ultimate lie-detector test, you just cannot fool Mother Nature, she gives you just one look and that’s it Boet, your either in or your out.

My two Bassets Max and Flint will in all probability just walk-on over and with their pointy noses smell my celebrity guests shoes, socks, slobbering away as Bassets do. Just because that’s who they are, trusting, well behaved, the clowns of dogdom, they love and are loved by everyone. The test is however if Thula, our almost two-year old Rhodesian Ridgeback will do the same. She does not trust instinctively and won’t easily come and lay her head on your lap. Oh no, that is meant for me and my wife only, and us alone. If she were to come closer and allow you to touch her that would be like Jean Claude von Damme winning the Oscar for Best Perfor-mance in a Drama, a near impossibility. There is however some that has had the privilege of having her blessing, although few and far in-between.

While this meet and greet is going on I would not say a word, I would let my distinguished guests just mingle with my best friends, and to me that will tell a lot about my visitors. Any person Max and Flint and Thula approves of, I will approve of,or at least give a chance. You can decide if you would do the same.

I wish politicians would look to nature to solve the many problems we as the human race have in solving our differences.

In the first place it is the many politicians we vote into power that is responsible for the rise in corruption and miss-management of government funds. This most often than not lead to the problems we currently face on the political landscape. Be that as it may, I hereby invite Mrs. Helen Zille and Comrade Julius Malema to spend an afternoon in my company. I promise to have large quantities of the best Sauvignon Blanc the Paarl Valley has to offer on hand, chilled to perfection, as well as a delightful platter of goodies to accompany the chilled white.

We would sit on my stoep, chatting about this and that, all very civilized, looking over the valley towards the mountains opposite us. Then, before the conversation gets heated, because timing is everything, I would let my dogs out.

Now, as we all know, you just can’t fool a dog once he/she has had the opportunity to be in your close proximity. He will either come and lick your hand or back away and look at you from a distance. Giving you the eye he looks at your aura and decides whether he should charge or give you the honour of a friendly pat.
