It has come to the attention of many, that we

) Everyday should be Mandela Day, we all

enjoy the excitement around doing good in

honour of the late legend, imagine if we prac

    tised these deeds everyday.

Meer as n jaar nadat n jong

    vrou wreedaardig vermoor is

    en haar halfnaakte liggaam in

    die Palmietrivier in Paarl-Oos

gegooi is, het n man vandees-

    week in verband hiermee in

    die hof verskyn.

    Goeie speurwerk deur Paarl-

    Oos-polisie se moord-en-roof-

    taakspan het daartoe gelei dat

    Denver Ka-joe Daniels (31) van

    Magnolia, opVrydag 11Julie om-

streeks 01:35 in verband met die

moord op Rudene Counter (17) in

    hegtenis geneem is.

    HyhetMaandag14Julievirdie

eerste keer in die hof verskyn en

sal in aanhouding bly totdat hy

op 22 Julie weer verskyn vir n

    borgtogaansoek.

    Seuns het

    verlede jaar ty-

    dens die April-

    skoolvakansie

    Volgens Bettie was dit niks

vreemds as Rudene n week lank

    vanaf hul woning in Magnolia-

    woonstelle weggebly het nie.

Maar toe haar dogter twee we-

ke sonder n woord weg was, het

    sy bekommerd geraak en ver-

    woed begin soek na haar.

Ek het toe stories gehoor van

n lyk wat by die rivier gevind is

Met n besoek aan die Paarl-

Should Paarlites set aside 67minutes forMandela?

    Nelson Mandela fought for

    social justice for 67 years.

Were asking you to start with

    67 minutes.

    We would be honoured if

    suchadaycouldserve tobring

    together people around the

    world to fight poverty andpro-

    mote peace and reconcilia-

    tion.

    This statement to promote

    theMandelaDaycampaign in-

vites the world to get together

to honour the legacy of this

    greatstatesmanon18July,his

    birthday.

    On this day, participating

    individuals and businesses

    will devote 67minutes to help-

ing people who are less fortu-

    nate.

    EvenafterMandelas death,

    many Paarlites and others

    around the world will still

    spend 67 minutes extending a

helping hand to the needy. In

so doing, they will be keeping

    his memory alive.

Paarl Post spoke to some lo-

    cals and asked them what

    Mandela Day meant to them.

    Michel Jacobs; To be

    totally honest, not much,

    it is just another day.

    Philemon Gwinyai Sit

    hole; Like other public

    holidays it is meant to

    serve as a reminder, to

those of us who so of

    ten forget, that the free

    dom we enjoy today did

    not come for free, or

    was not simply handed

over and that it had to

    be fought for by Man

    dela and others. But I

feel that it is quickly los

    ing the significance it

    previously had.

    Alicia Eksteen; You

    must do something for

    67 minutes to help oth

    er people. But I have

    not yet participated.

    Liezel Mller:

To pick just one day is

    silly. You need to do

    something good when

ever you can see that it

    is necessary.

    Tian Capes: It is a

day to give back to the

    community, especially

    those who are less for

    tunate.

    Auviane Ontong; Man

dela Day is a day that

    should be observed eve

    ry day, every minute, as

    often as we can. Charity

    starts at home.

    LoganPearl Williams;

    Mandela was a living

    legend and its only fair

    that we pay tribute to

    him.

Dit maak my innig seer ommy dogter so

hartseer te sien. Stories doen die rondte dat

ek nie my kind tot by haar pa wil neem nie

sonder werk en met my dogter en my ma as

afhanklikes. Daar was moeilike tye maar

ons is daardeur. Ek het weer liefde gevind

by n man wat my soos sy enigste laat voel

Tinus se tweede vrou, Diana, Paarl-Oos-

gemaklik, draaglik en liefdevol as moontlik

temaak.

soek.

helder wanneer haar naam genoem word of

sy vir hom n sms stuur. Ons sal nooit, en

Unsuspecting Paarlites may also be victim to an al-

leged Facebook scam during which especially older

    women have been defrauded.

    PaarlPosthasreceived informationthatat least two

local women have been scammed out of thousands of

rands after befriending men on the social media plat-

    form, Facebook.

According to reliable information received, these

women where made promises of romance from for-

eignerswhowanted to visit them in SouthAfrica. But

they needed money to make their way to this country

while they waited for their investments to be cashed

in. And in SomersetWest a similar case of such fraud

is unravelling in the Somerset West Magistrates

    Court.

This after a Somerset West woman was defrauded

of about R240 000 in just over a month in an alleged

Facebook scam. Evidence of the scam was presented

in the bail application of PiusEmokpe (37) onMonday

30 June. Emokpe was arrested by the Somerset West

Police at a flat in Gordons Bay on 20 February on a

charge of fraud pertaining to the depositing of the

above amount into his Standard Bank account. Ac-

cording toSomersetWest police spokesperson, Sgt Su-

zan Jantjies, Emokpe targets middle-aged women on

Facebook by setting up various profiles.

It was Emokpes alter ego, Charlie Legget, who the

54-year-old woman had fallen prey to between 7 May

to 12 June last year. Legget won the womans trust

after he presented himself as a successful Texan engi-

    neer residing inBloubergstrand.Hesaidhewasawid-

ower whose wife had died of cancer and also a single

    parent to a young daughter.

On 7 May, while allegedly in America, Legget first

made telephonic contact with the woman informing

her that he was robbed and asked her to transfer

R10 000 to him via a friends Standard Bank account.

A week later, after a part had allegedly broken at the

oil rig and needed to be fixed at a cost of R51 364, he

    allegedly contactedher again, asking formoremoney.

After this incident he also contacted her on four occa-

sions, requesting about R220 000 in total. The woman

apparently borrowed money from her mother and

used this and money from an investment, to deposit

another R5 000 into the account on 12 June.

Later, the same day, she received a call from Stand-

ard Banks fraud department informing her that she

may have been a victim of a scam.

    * Police suspect these scams may be the work of a

syndicate and are requesting all possible victims to

phone the investigating officer Sgt Nolan Fisher on

His appointment comes after the sudden

death of the former commander of the Paarl

Ncata grew up in Kwazakhele, Port Eliza-

He has been in the service for the past 20

    years.

Ncata says his transition to Paarl has been

    nothing but rewarding.

This is a lucky station in that there is

enough manpower and there are people with

many years of service and experience work-

I want to be involved with

    He says this allows him

not only to get to know the

    officers working under

him, but also to be active

    in the community.

    His vision for the Paarl

    crease crime.

    make Paarl a much safer

place for all to live in. The

    policing must be im-

Ncata has been making it a priority to en-

gage with the community. He has visited

churches where he spoke to members and

urged them to assist the police by reporting

    crime.

He said he intentionally chose churches as

    a meeting place.

He also plans to address learners at schools

and hold Imbizos, specifically in areas where

there is a lot of crime.

Ncata says people should also get to know

their neighbours and become more involved

    in their neighbourhoods.

He saysWhatsapp groups, for example, are

a good way to be in contact with ones neigh-

bours and report any suspicious activity in

    the area.

We need to mobilise the community, the

police can never do it alone.

He also encourages the community tomake

use of the suggestion box that was put up at

the station and to attend CPF meetings.

The communitymust be the eyes and ears

for criminal activities, but also for the police,

    Power generation: what to know

    Thecontinuedelectricityandenergysupply

crisis in South Africa has necessitated con-

sumers to come up with creative and more

cost effective ways to save electricity.

It is in this spirit that theDrakensteinMu-

nicipalityhas takenup the challenge to save

energy and find alternative ways of provid-

    ing sustainable energy.

At a provincial and national government

    level, municipalities and consumers have

been encouraged to save electricity to pre-

vent Eskom from instituting load shedding.

The focus must be moved to renewable

types of energy for electricity generation for

example wind, sun, hydro, biofuels, wave

and tidal energy sources, the municipality

    says.

    Drakenstein Municipality is eagerly

    movingdownthispath to reduce its reliance

    onnon-renewableenergysourcesbythecur-

rent investigation of the installation of a

    Waste-to-Energy Plant, says Deon Louw,

    executive manager for infrastructure serv-

    ices at the municipality.

    Theaimis toreduce thequantityofwaste

dumpedat landfill sites by 90%andalso gen-

erate approximately 10% of renewable elec-

tricity, thereby achieving our quota of 10%

    per year.

The municipality also hopes to increased

this quota to 20% by introductingwind-gen-

erated and photo voltaic (electricity from

    the sun) generated electricity.

Louw added that the municipality has

now taken another step in the facilitation

of more effective electricity use by allowing

all types of consumers to generate their own

electricity through the use of renewable en-

ergy sources such as wind or sun powered

    generators.

The council has formally accepted a set

    of electricity tariffswhereby electricity cus-

    tomersmaygenerateelectricity into themu-

nicipal electricity grid with the use of wind

    electricity generators, photo voltaic (PV)

sun electricity generators or similar elec-

tricity generators operating on a renewable

    basis of electricity energy generation.

Electricity tariffs, for this purpose of cus-

tomers wanting to purchase as well as sell

electricity, have been designed to allow the

    municipality togeneratesufficient funds for

    operations and maintenance of electricity

networks, and also allow customers to buy

and sell electricity energy at the same tariff.

Special meters will be installed, which will

    measuretheamountofelectricityconsumed

    and theamountof electricitygenerated, sep-

arately. Customers will be allowed to build

up a credit on accounts for electricity gener-

    ated, inexcessofownuse,withinanymunic-

ipal financial year, but the credit will be ze-

roed at the end of each financial year.

    Special power purchase agreements

(PPA) will be entered into with customers

wishing to only generate electricity at a

    large scale, Louw explained.

He warned however that due to the inher-

ent danger of working with electricity, spe-

cial safety features will have to be adhered

    to. Customerswishing to co-generatewill be

expected to pay a co-generation connection

    charge in order for

    the municipality to

    register the co-gen-

    eration source, fit

    the special meter de-

    scribed above and to

    formally be allowed

    to co-generate elec-

    tricity.

    The Municipal

    Electricity Supply

    Bylaw is currently

    being adjusted to al-

    low the installation

    of such a system as

    the previous bylaw

    disallowed such an

    Is 67minutewerklikgenoeg?

Mre is Kersfees!

    rug by die huis verwelkom!

    Di groepie jongmense is deel

van nog n orkes wat oorsee hul

vernuf gaan wys het. Dis noumu-

    siekmaakenmense entertain. Dis

    tuisdorpe. Dis maar my beskeie

    mening.

Ek is eerlik as ek s dat ek elke

keer as ek te hore kom van onse

    kinderswatoorsee

    gaan optree, ek ge-

    mengde gevoelens

    het. Ek is opreg

    bly, maar ek won-

    der ook deurgaans

    of dit n geval is

    van n profeet

    word nie in sy eie

    land geer nie?

    Hoeveel platforms skepons in ons

    eie gemeenskappe sodat ons vir

hulle kan wys dat ons hul talente

    waardeer? Organiseer ons n gig

    of twee?Ofselfsgeen?Ondersteun

ons as hulle iewers optree? Moet

ons nie meer doen nie? Moet die

    krkeniemeerdoen,andersasom

    klippe tegooiwanneerhulle indie

klubs gaan speel nie? As ek dink

    aanhoeveelmusikante of sangers

hul talente in die kerk begin ont-

wikkel het, is dit stof tot nadenke.

    Ek dinknou veral aanmense soos

    Justin Timberlake, Britney

    Spears, Beyonce, Katy Perry en

    natuurlikkanekniemy favourite,

    Whitney Housten, weglaat nie!

    Hulle het byvoorbeeld almal on-

    der die kerkbanke grootgeword

en in die kerkkore begin sing.

    In n telefoniese onderhoudmet

    Nizel Ziggy Fischer, n musikant

(stigter van die band, Afro Jazz)

en deesdae voltydse sjef in die

Paarl, het ek nogal n hele paar

    dinge wys geword. Nizel, wat

    voorheen met die orkes Fireball

ook oorsee opgetree het, s: Die

    mense oorsee erken en waardeer

jou as kunstenaar veel meer as

tuis, en jy word ook meer betaal

vir wat jy doen. Alhoewel jy oor-

see alles gratis kry en n celebrity

status handhaaf, is dit ook harde

    werk.Onshet gewoonlik 11maan-

    de-kontrakte geteken, enkomdan

intussen net vir so twee weke

    huistoe. Dis bietjie hard, maar

mens geniet dit, want dis jou pas-

sie. Deesdae is ek voltyds sjef,

want dis ook een van my passies

    omkos temaak,maar ekdoennog

so af en toe gigs. Ander kunste-

naars wat ook al voorheen oorsee

    opgetree het, en sommige nog

steeds, is onder andere die orkes

Public Opinion, en n sanger soos

    byvoorbeeld die Paarliet, Felicity

    KiranBuffel,watal inSpanje,Hol-

land, Marocco, en in vele ander

lande haar ding gaan doen het,

    asook Sydwell Beziek, Maryke

    Buffel, en ander kun-

    stenaars.

    Ek salueer enige

    kunstenaar wat sy of

    haar passie uitleef, al

    is dit net plaaslik of

    ook in ander lande.

    Doenwat julle die bes-

te doen. Al is daar nie-

    mand wat in jul glo

nie, solank jy weet dis jou Godge-

gewe talent, wat jy nie onder die

    maatemmer kan en wil begrawe

nie. Ek het van die jong en talent-

    volle sanger- en liedjieskrywer

    NakhaneToure, indienuutsteuit-

    gawe vandieTaalgenoot, tydskrif

    van die ATKV, gelees. Nakhane

    het inPortElizabethgrootgeword

en is die afgelope paar jaar woon-

agtig in dieGoudstad. Vir hom, s

    hy, is diemusiek-ding,moeilik en

    maklik.Ekbedoel,sure, jyhetdie

talent, daar gaan jy. Maar wat

maak jy daarmee? Dit is regtig

soos n plant. As jy nie daarna om-

sien nie, gaan dit nie bly leef nie.

So, as jy weet jy het talent, doen

so voort!

Kom

Doen tog net

    iets.

    Ondersteunonse talentvollekinders

    Will anyoneactagainst theseunruly cyclists?

    Lastweek I coincidentallyhad two

    unpleasant experiences with

cyclists. It is evident that they do

    not followtherulesof theroad,and

no one is keeping an eye on them

    either.

    At the four-way-stop at Breda

and Van der Lingen Streets, a cy-

clist nearly rode intomy car. I had

    come down Van der Lingen,

stopped and all the other vehicles

    where following the correct stop

and go procedures at the stop

street. Just as Iwanted to turn into

Breda Street, as it was my turn, a

    cyclist leisurely drove across the

stop street, not adhering to any

    rules of the road.

Then inMain Road, I drove past

a cyclist who was also leisurely

    ridingonthewrongsideoftheroad

    against oncoming traffic, taking

no care or note of vehicles around

    him.

And just take a look how often

    cyclistsalsodrivestraightpast red

    traffic lights.

    Andtheseincidentsarenot inse-

cluded back roads, but on main

    thoroughfares in Paarl, and no

where is a traffic officer in sight.

In any case, I would actually have

liked to see whether a traffic offic-

    er would have apprehended cy-

    clists whowere breaking the rules

    of the road.

The problem is also that if I had

    to accidentally knock down such

a cyclist, I would probably be the

one to blame, even when I am fol-

lowing the rules of the road.

When is this going to end?

    I amconvinced that this tenden-

    to lack of law-enforcement.

In all my years of driving the

roads in and around Paarl (21 to

Not that I am one of those who

disregard the laws of the road, but

    TANDYLEE MARINUS

Franschhoek truly lived up to its

name as the French corner as

the town was decked with an ar-

ray of blue, white and red this

    past weekend.

    The annual Franschhoek Bastille

    Locals and visitors indulged in

    According to organisers, the

weekend proved to be a huge suc-

    This allowedmorepeople to enjoy

highlight, not only did the town at-

    tracts thousands of visitors during

the weekend, but the marquee at-

tracted just under 5 000 visitors on

    the Saturday. The weather also

played its role in providing a gor-

    geouswinters day on the Saturday.

There was a smaller crowd on

    Sunday and although the weather

was a lot colder and the rain clouds

    loomed festival-goers spirits would

    not be dampened.

The Bastille Festival refers to the
