Yazeed Moerat (54), ’n bekende duiwe-boer van die Paarl, vertel: “Die duiwe-sport as geheel is vir die land ’n geweldigefinansiële inspuiting.Heelwatmensekanmoontlik hul werk in die duiwesportbe-dryf verloor, maar ek glo die sport is ster-ker as hierdie struikelblok in ons pad.”

Die sport word deur Saskok (Suid-Afri-kaanse Sportkonfederasie en OlimpieseKomitee) erken.

“Ons bedryf diesport professioneelen volg alle nodigeriglyne.”

Yazeed vlieg alduiwe vandat hy 12jaar oud is. Sy pa,Yusuf, is landwydbekend en reeds 60jaar in die bedryf.

Business as usual at DoolhofThe future of the well-known Doolhof WineEstate near Welling-ton is secure and it isbusiness as usual.

So said estate man-ager Johan Fourie,with reference to aSunday newspaper re-porting on the futureofDoolhofWineEstateafter the owner, Den-nis Kerrison, wasfound guilty of con-spiracy to bribery in aBritish court.

DoolhofWineEstatehas been owned by the Kerrison family since2003/2004 when it was a grape and small studfarm. The family invested heavily over thenext few years and saw this investment as along-term venture.

“They were and still are committed to ameaningful operation, albeit with limitedfunds, to thebenefit of all parties,” saidFourie.

“This is particularly true of the workforceand employees, where accommodation for 70-pluspeoplehasbeenupgradedandhealthcare,education and sports facilities have been add-ed on site for the benefit of thoseworkers. Thiscommitment remains as strong as ever and

there should be no ef-fect, in principle, onthe current situation.

With regard tocommunications andday-to-day manage-ment of the farm andestate, Fourie is au-thorised to manageall aspects of thebusi-ness, both internallyand externally,through variousstructures.

“Regarding thecourt case, it is truethat the judge, in sen-

tencing, considered the family commitmentand this was taken into account as mitigationduring Kerrison’s sentencing,” explains Fou-rie. “But therehasneverbeenanycorrespond-ence or discussions about confiscating theDoolhofWineEstate forpayment to theBritishSerious Fraud Office (SFO). The SFO, in fact,has confirmed formally that they seek no Con-fiscation Order from the Courts.

“As far as the legal situation is concernedthere are no, and never have been, legal inves-tigations or processes inferred or questionedby the SFO, or any other legal body regardingDoolhof Wine Estate.”

Despite legal woes of the owner of DoolhofWine Estate, it is business as usual at thislavish Wellington estate.

Copper theft still abig concernCable theft remains an ongoingconcern in the area with mainlycopper cables being stolen on adaily basis.

Within the past week, at least twomore reports of copper cable theftwerebroughttothemunicipalityandpolice’s attention.At the Long Street bridge, a redun-

dant cable, which still contained val-uable copper, was recently stolen.According toa resident in thearea,

on Thursday 13 November she react-ed to a loud banging noise comingfrom the direction of the bridge.Upon investigation, she witnessed

young boys hammering under thebridge.A short while later, she spotted

themagain, this timecarryingcablesunder their arms.The police were called to the scene

but were unable to catch the perpe-trators.Hours later she again heard the

same noise and yet again saw perpe-trators pounding under the bridge.She says this has become a daily

problem in the area and authoritiesare having little success in curbingthe problemIn the past, streetlights have also

been stolen.In Lantana Street, Paarl-East resi-

dents are currently experiencing ablackout due to streetlight conduc-tors that were stolen.Drakenstein municipal manager,

JohannMettler, says themunicipali-ty is busy with repairs.He said the stolen cable and con-

ductor is valued at R25 000.The municipality is in the process

of arranging a meeting with theregional commissioner of the SouthAfrican Police Service to address the

issue.He urged the community to report

any suspicious activity directly tothe police.Paarl Police spokesperson, Cap-

tain Louise du Plessis, confirmedthat the theft of copper and cables inthe area remains a concern.During the period of August to Oc-

tober, copper pipes, irrigation tapsand electrical cables were reportedstolen.Thevalueof thestolenproper-ty was estimated at R685 000.About 20 arrests weremade in this

We deliberately decided not to zoom in on the horse.Why is this in the public interest?What are four horses doing on a publicroad in the first place and why were they not safely stabled for the night?They are a serious threat tomotorists and are not allowed on public roads,yet no one seems to care about that.Why is itnotnewswhenapublic figurekills fourhorsesonapublic road?Is it because he is famous and therefore has the right to transgress wherenormal motorists would be crucified? where the elderly areallowed to walk to theshop and their reli-gious gatherings,without fear.Forparents, it is im-portant to know thatbefore a child looksoutside the door, theymust be able to find

rolemodels in theirhome.Raisingchildrentothebestof theirability,parents need to be these role-mod-els.Although children have rights,parentsshouldknowthat theycanstill discipline a child, withoutabusing the child and violatingthe child’s rights.From an early age we weretaught right fromwrong, it shouldworry us that our youth despisethis, favouring wrong over right.Parents are merely the vesselthat bring a child into the worldand it is still my task as a child tobe a responsible citizen and takeownership of my life and actions.No quick remedy can fix ourchallenges, the answer lies withus as individuals.Soyes, the recent killings in ourcommunities should not be ac-cepted. Sharon Roberts, eienaar van diétehuis vir bejaardes, sê egter die 88-jarige Lana van Zyl was tegnies niéeen van hul inwoners nie, omdat syvir weke in die hospitaal was voorsy gesterf het.

“Die dag toe my ma in die Panora-ma-hospitaal opgeneem is, het ditvier ure geneem om haar bedsereskoon te maak. Die dokter het aanons gesê dit is die ergste geval vanverwaarlosing van ’n bejaarde watsy nog ooit by dié hospitaal gesienhet,” sê Linda Burger van die Paarl,Van Zyl se dogter.

Lindaseman,Frank,hetop23Au-gustus ’n oproep vanaf ’n werkne-mer by die tehuis gekry om hom tevra of sy skoonma se “begrafnis-goed” reg is, “want dit lyk nie of sydit gaan maak nie”. Hulle het homingelig Van Zyl het hartversaking.

“My ma was baie vuil en het ver-skriklik geruik. Haar een been envoet was vol bedsere. Haar hele lig-gaam was deurtrek met septisemie.

“Sy moes twee bloedoortappingskry,sywasondervoed,gedehidreer.Dievloeistofhetuithaarliggaamge-loop. Die dokters was skepties oorhaar toestand. Hulle het gesê omhaar lewe te red, moes haar been af-gesit word, maar sy was te swak,”vertel Linda.

“In daardie stadium was die beenvolgens die dokter nog net met eentendon aan haar liggaam geheg. ’nDeel van haar enkel was weg,” sêLinda.

Alhoewel die 88-jarige Van Zylmet goeie versorging goed aan dieherstel was, het sy egter vog op haarlonge gekry, en is sy op 14 Oktoberoorlede aan septiese skok.

“Ons het die bewerings oor dieslegte kos en misbruik van medika-sie by Huis Serendipity in die koe-rant gelees, maar ons weet niksdaarvan nie.

“My ma het Alzheimers se siektegehadenkonniemeermet onskom-munikeer nie. Ons het elke twee we-ke by haar gaan kuier,” sê Linda.

Roberts sê dit is nonsens. Volgenshaar het Van Zyl se kinders in dievyf jaar wat sy in Serendipity ge-woonhet,net ’npaarkeerkomkuierenmoes syhulle smeekompleistersvir Van Zyl se wonde te stuur.

“Ons kon haar nie hospitaal toestuurnie,wantonskonniedie fami-lie in die hande kry nie,” sê sy.

Die Burgers sê egter Van Zyl het’n uitstekende mediese fonds gehaden Roberts het dít geweet.

“Waarom is sy nie beter behandelnie en hoekom het ons nie van hier-die wonde geweet nie? My ma hetgely,” sê Linda.

“Ons het gedink in die Kaap gaansy beter versorging as in die Paarlkry, en by Serendipity kon sy Tafel-berg sien. Dit was die grootste foutvan my lewe.”

Sy sê hulle het R5 300 per maandbetaal vir haar ma se bed, versor-ging en etes. Huis Serendipity mag28 mense huisves en versorg.

VolgensRoberts is die aantygingsoor wanvoeding en die misbruikvan medikasie by Huis Serendipitywatdeur ’nvoormaligewerknemer,Lozita Benjamin, aan die media ge-maak is, gemeen. Maar, sê sy, dit isook bedekte seën.

“Nou is ons bewus van ’n paargoedwatonskanveranderwaarvanons nie éérs geweet het nie. Onsmoet byvoorbeeld ’n grondwet hê,geregistreer wees by die demensie-raad en ’n bestuurskomitee kry,” sêsy.

Sy sê sy het ook klaar gereël datdie personeel, wat volgens haar op-gelei is in tuissorg, nóg opleidingkry, en die geverfde sementvloer indie eetsaal moet geteël word.

Paarl gears up for 16DaysThe annual 16 Days of Activism forNo Violence Against Women andChildren, which runs from 25 No-vember to10Decemberandisaimedat creating awareness about thehuge negative impact domestic vio-lencehas,andhasalreadykickedoffin Paarl.

Gesie van Deventer, Mayor ofDrakenstein, started the initiativeto “dress” the municipal area to in-crease awareness andbuild supportfor victims and survivors of abuse.

Local activist, Amanda Mostert,who herself was a victim of abuseand rape, heard the mayor’s pleaand is working together with otherrole players, businesses and localresidents to bring the messageacross.

Residents and businesses areurged to support the campaign bypurchasing an awareness package

and to participate in the various 16Days of Activism events and activi-ties taking place.

One hundred and fifteen busi-nesses in the town have alreadyshowed their support to the cam-paign by purchasing awarenesspackages. Campaign information isalso provided to businesses thattakepart, toempower theirstaff andassist people in trauma situations.

The community is also encour-aged to keep a whistle ready for thestart andendof the campaign,wheneverybody is encouraged to blowtheir whistles at 12:00 on 25 Novem-ber and 10 December.

Die besigheid het mettertyd ge-skuif na ’n groter perseel in Hoof-straat waar dit nog tot 2013 was.

In 2003 het Anton, wat toe reedsvoltyds betrokke was by To-Nett’sBloemiste, To-Nett’s Verhuringsen Dekor begin.

Anton vertel dat hy al as kindnaweke gewerk het vir sy ma omsy sakgeld te verdien.

Sedert 2013 het To-Nett’s Bloe-miste en To-Nett’s Verhurings enDekor saam onder een dak in Suid-straat, Suider-Paarl begin werk.

Vandag is Anton trots om die lei-sels te kan oorneem by sy ma enhy sien uit daarna om voort te bouop die nalatenskap wat sy vir diefamilie agtergelaat het.Anton en sy span is opgewonde

om die professionele diens wat To-Nett’s vir die afgelope 26 jaar aankliënte verskaf het, in die toekomsvoort te sit.

FEARLESS: Paarl Boys’ High travelled to thecoastal town of Gansbaai, the home of theGreat White Shark. Great White Shark CageDiving Company treated the boys, accompanied by Kobus Conradie and JacquesGrobbelaar, to breakfast and were given ashort talk on the dos and dont’s of sharkcage diving. Once on the boat, guests aretaken fifteen minutes out to sea. As the cagewas pulled closer, the excitement built and atthe first sighting of a great white, guestsscrambled into their wetsuits, weight beltsand goggles, to get ready to jump into thecage. CapetonianandSwedish ridersclaim inaugural PaarlMTB raceSwedish marathon championJennie Stenerhag and cross-country specialist Robert Simtook the honours in the inaugu-ral Bestmed Paarl MTB Classic,presented by the City of Draken-stein, in the Cape Winelands onSunday.

Sim, riding in the colours of Rob-ert Daniel, crossed the finish linefirstatthePaarlArboretumtoclaimthe men’s 60 km title in a time of2:44:08.

He was more than a minute clearof runner-up Billy Stelling, who fin-ished in 2:45:26, with Craig Gerberthird in 2:47:12.

Stenerhag, who finished secondalongside Candice Neethling in lastweek’s Wines2Whales stage race,took an uncontested victory in thewomen’s race in 3:01:13.

Trailing the Cape Brewing Com-pany rider by a good 10minuteswasMarleen Lourens, who clocked atime of 3:11:13, while Nadia Visserwon the final spot on the podium in3:12:52.

According toSim, thecrispwindyconditions on the day and longstretches of single-track riding hadplayed perfectly into his hands.

After stopping shortly after thestart to adjust his tyre pressure, hesaid he had been forced to race hardinitially to catch the leaders.

“There was a group of about 10guys going up the first hill, whichwas a flattish climb on a dirt roadand not too technical.

“Immediately I could see thatCraig was strong at the front be-cause that type of surface suits himas a former road rider.”

Sim said he was happy to sit be-hind the first four riders and catchhis breathasheplottedhis strategicgetaway inside the Paarl MountainNature Reserve.

“I was cognisant of the fact thatthere would be a long single-trackcoming up and that’s my specialty.

“I wanted to get into that sectionfirst, so that’swhat I did and luckilygot a bit of a gap there.”

The Capetonian put a couple ofminutes into chasers Stelling andGerber on the flowing 10 km de-scent.On thesnaking trails throughthe Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, Simcaught sporadic glimpses of his pur-suers but maintained his almosttwo-minute leadashe rodealone forthe second half of the race.

“On the second climb, which was

quite long, I put a bitmore time intothem. When I crested the hill, Ilooked back and couldn’t see thembut they must have made somegains over the last 20 km.”

Their efforts were however notenoughtocatchSimovertheclosingkilometres as he raced unaccompa-nied through the streets of Paarl tothe finish.

“Having somuchsingle-trackdef-initely played to my advantage.

“Had there been more flats, andwith that wind, I think Billy andCraig could have worked togetherand closed the gap as they’re bothstrong riders and bigger than mewith more power.”

With nine stage wins in the CapeEpic masters category under hisbelt, the 48-year-old said the racehad been the ideal start to his basetraining for the 2015 campaignalongside Nico Pfitzenmaier.

“The Epic has two or three daysof similar riding in the Wellingtonarea, so this terrain is very good forthat. “The single-track comingdown off the top of Paarl Mountainwas a revelation – it was actuallyworld class.”
