Imperialism: A policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force
Colonialism: The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
Annexation: Incorporation by joining or uniting

SOCIAL DARWINISM
Social Darwinism: The theory that individuals evolve and have different classes.
This was used to justify imperialism because they thought they were “helping” other people

White man’s burden: this is a poem about how white people should feel the need to impose their culture on other cultures and take care of non-white people

RACISM AND THE MISSIONARY IMPULSE
Racism: The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race
Paternalism: When people in authoritative roles restrict the freedom and responsibilities of those subordinate to them.
Paternalism is a type of racism because it allows the government to restrict the freedom of certain races.
The missionaries thought that their ways were better, so they tried to help them by taking over and losing their culture

THE SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA
It happened between 1880-1900
It was a period of rapid colonization in Africa by European powers.
The Berlin Conference was a conference that made people in Europe able to own parts of Africa.
Liberia and Ethiopia were the only countries during the scramble for Africa that were not colonized.

Nationalism: This is a patriotic feeling that can be marked by superiority over other countries

COLONIZED VS THE COLONIZERS
An industrialized nation would take over other people’s land in order to further their own production
I assume that the reaction of the people living in the land that was being taken over would be confused and mad. They were forced into changing their way of life.
