Overview of the Icopal Pitched Roofing Underlay range

MonarTileThe MonarTile range of products belongs to the traditional type of undertile linings that, are highly suitable for cold roof systems where the insulation is at ceiling level and there is as a minimum eaves ventilation in the form of soffit vents or similar to comply with BS5534:2003 and BS5250:2002. The MonarTile range always requires continuous ventilation at eaves to function as the undertile linings are termed vapour tight (non breathable).

MonarpermThe Icopal Monarperm pitched roofing range of products are the latest version of vapour permeable roofing underlays also know as breather membranes. The Monarperm range is manufactured using Ultra Sonic bonding the latest technology in lamination giving a softer and a more ageing stable product. The Monarperm functional film is also apart from anything else in terms of the functional microporous film which is the latest generation of these films and can be recognised by its dark grey colour for improved UV stability. The membranes are highly suitable for warm pitched roofs where the full function of a breathable roofing underlay can be utilised and no ventilation would be required to limit the function of the insulation material and thereby the overall energy efficiency of the building. In cold pitched roofs where breather membrane are used a 5mm continuous ventilation gap at ridge level is required according to NHBC guidelines section 7.2 S11 in reference to BS 5250:2002. This can be overcome by the use of the unique and patented IcoAir.

MonarTile ProtectMonarTile Protect is manufactured with a spun bond underside that gives a strong and soft feel and prevents condensate run off. The top side of the product is coated with a polyethylene (PE) coating that provides a water tight function to the product. MonarTile protect is a vapour tight undertile lining and therefore requires as minimum cross ventilation at eaves.

MonarTile Protect – A cost effective undertile lining ideal for domestic new build and refurbishment projects in non-coastal areas. The MonarTile Protect has a weight of 130 g/m2 and available in 1 x 15 m and 1 x 45 m roll size.

MonarTile Supa-R MonarTile Supa-R is manufactured from a polypropylene (PP) hydrophilic spun bond with a strong reinforcing grid encapsulated with a polyethylene (PE) top coating layer. Designed for use over raftered and boarded roofs in exposed sites where greater mechanical performance is required due to wind uplift. The underside of the membrane will hold condensate and thereby prevent the “drip-effect” onto insulation material.

MonarTile Supa-R - A high performance undertile lining ideal for small and large projects in weather exposed sites. MonarTile Supa-R has a weight of 150 g/m2 and available in 1 x 50 m roll size.

MonarTile 1F MonarTile 1F Underslating Felt comprises of a traditional hessian reinforcement and standard bitumen with a sanded finish. It’s manufactured to the traditionally formerly known BS747 standard for type 1F underslating felt for ventilated cold pitched roofs. MonarTile 1F has the well known benefits of being self sealing around penetrating nails and with a solid mass to minimise the wind uplift factor.

MonarTile 1F - A traditional underslating felt that are ideal for large or small projects with main use is on boarded roofs. The weight of MonarTile 1F is 1500 g/m2 and is available in 1 x 15 m roll size.

Monarperm 400Monarperm 400 is a lightweight economic alternate breathable pitched roofing underlay made from two layers of spun bonded polypropylene (PP), which is sandwiched in a special formulated polypropylene (PP) microporous film.

Monarperm 400 - A economical lightweight breathable pitched roofing underlay for warm and cold rafter roofs in none exposed sites. Product is 90 g/m2 and available in 1 x 50m and 1.5 x 50m roll sizes.

Monarperm 600Monarperm 600 is a breathable roofing underlay made from a bulky polypropylene spun bonded material with a dark grey microporous film for added UV and ageing stability. Monarperm 600 is manufactured with high nail tear resistance in both machine and cross direction making it more stable to work with.

Monarperm TopMonarperm Top is a light grey coloured breathable roofing underlay made from heavy duty layers of polypropylene (PP) spun bonded material with a dark grey microporous film for superior UV and ageing stability. Monarperm Top is made with an extra heavy underside spun bond to make it useable on boarded roofs. Monarperm Top is also available in a version with an integrated lap tape for improved overall energy performance of the roofing installation.

Energy efficiency To achieve the best and most energy efficient roof a combination of different details are required. First of all a sealed warm roof with a Monarperm breather membrane where the laps are sealed is up to 7% more energy efficient than a similar material with no sealed laps. Further benefits can be achieved by the use of a reflective breather membrane like Monarperm Reflex which limits solar gain as well as an integrated tape for sealing the laps. The final extension on energy efficient roofing underlays from Icopal is Therm’X which combines all the benefits of a sealed roof with a highly reflective surface and a thin complementary insulation layer, which makes it the preferred choice in refurbishments and roof conversions to warm room in the roof projects.

Monarperm Reflex Monarperm Reflex is a high performing reflective breather membrane made from polypropylene (PP) aluminium metalli sation and a special microporous film to provide the correct breathability and water tightness of the product. The features of this product means it’s more energy efficient than a traditional breather membrane and no flapping laps due to the integrated tape.

Monarperm Reflex - A high performing breather membrane that acts as a traditional breather membrane with the added feature of a reflective surface and integrated tape. Monarperm Reflex is 170 g/m2 and available in 1.5 x 50m roll size.

Therm’X Therm’X is a high performing breather membrane made from a highly reflective top breather membrane, a polyester matt for complementary insulation and a reinforced reflective underside which is mechanically interlocked with the polyester matt. The huge benefit of the Therm’X is the three in one product you get from it functioning as a traditional breather membrane, with superior mechanical strength, a reflective outer surface to limit solar gain in summer and a inner reflective side to increase U-value performance in winter.

Therm’X - An innovative insulating high vapour permeable pitched roof membrane with reflective surfaces that helps improve internal building comfort and performance whilst saving energy. Therm’X has a weight of 680 g/m2 and is available in 1.2 x 20.8m roll size.

Icopal Pitched Roofing Accessory Range

A range of specially designed accessories complements our pitched roofing underlay range, ensuring waterproofing performance and ageing stability. The accessories also make for speedier and secure installation and comply with the requirements of the current Codes of Practice and BS 5534.

Monobond LT Monobond LT is a high performance cross linked double sided butyl tape, which has extremely high tack while remaining flexible at low temperatures. The tape provides an effective water tight seal at critical details like at eaves and penetrations like chimneys and skylights.

Monarflex Eaves Guard EG300 Monarflex Eaves Guard is a high performance eaves protection system for pitched roofing underlays. The Eaves Guard prevents direct UV radiation onto the roofing underlay at eaves, which can lead to the degradation of the material. Both BS 5534 and BRE Defect Action Sheet 9 recommend the use of a more durable material for the exposed gutter areas. The Monarflex Eaves Guard is a rigid HDPE component removing the need for a fillet, which means cost and time saving.

5U Eaves SheetThe 5U Eaves Sheet is a polyester reinforced bituminous eaves protection sheet is designed to dressed into the gutter prior to the installation of the pitched roofing underlay, which must not be draped into the gutter. The 5U Eaves Sheet is 1.75mm thick and available in two widths, where the 0.5m width is for low pitch roofs between 12.5° to 30° and the narrower width of 0.33m is for pitch slops above 30°.

IcoAir Pitched Roofing VentIcoAir Pitched Roofing Vent is a patented one piece flexible EPDM ridge ventilation piece that works with all of the Icopal pitched roofing range when ridge ventilation is required. The IcoAir can be used in new build and easily installed from the outside or as a retrofit from the inside once roof coverings are on. The total ventilation area per IcoAir is 50cm2. An installation on a normal duo pitched roof will require one vent per truss (600mm centres trusses) on either side of the pitch.

Icopal Jointing TapeThe Icopal Jointing Tape is a double sided reinforced acrylic tape in a 75mm x 25m roll to join the laps of pitched roofing underlays. Its primary purpose is to prevent air and leakage paths, thereby improving the overall building energy performance. Secondly it limits the wind effect on the underlay via the laps thereby enhancing the durability of the membrane.

Therm’X Sealing TapeTherm’X Sealing Tape is a high performance overlap sealing tape for Therm’X pitched roofing underlay. The tape is an aluminium foil with special acrylic adhesive giving a high initial tack securing the underlay in place and subsequently keeping wind out of the roof thereby increasing the overall energy performance of the roof.

Installation and site work

Handling and StorageIcopal storage and handling instructions for each of the products must be followed at all times, damage as a result of incorrect storage will not be accepted by Icopal. Icopal pitched roofing underlays are delivered to site in rolls wrapped in a polyethylene wrapping bearing the name of the product, roll size and company details and where appropriate British Board of Agrément and other accreditation details such as CE marking are also identified on the packaging. All Icopal pitched roofing underlays and associated products must be stored on a flat level surface away from the ground, under cover and away from sources of heat. Any particular handling and storage instructions on the packaging must also be followed. Icopal Jointing Tape and Monobond LT Tape must be stored on a flat level surface away from the ground, under cover away from sources of heat and frost. The shelf life is 12 months before the initial tack of the product may be affected. In excessively cold conditions Icopal pitched roofing underlays and associated products should be stored in a warm environment for at least 24 hours ahead of installation, this will make handling easier in cold conditions. In conditions colder than 0°C the Icopal sealing tape will have a limited initial tack.

Health and SafetyConstruction or replacement of a pitched roof means working at height and as such personal safety and prevention against a fall must be considered a priority. When working on a roof ensure all necessary safety precautions are in place and follow safe working practices. Although the Icopal Monarperm and MonarTile range are strong it should not be walked on or used as a working platform.

General Installation• Install Icopal undertile lining in accordance with BS5534:2003 Code

of Practice for slating and tiling, BS8000: Part 6, NHBC guidelines to section 7.2, BS5250:2002 in relation to control of condensation in buildings and Icopal fixing instructions.

• Handle and fix the underlay with care to ensure no tears or punctures. Patch repair any tears or punctures prior to tiling or slating in accordance with Icopal instructions

• Limit drape in the membrane to 10-15 mm between rafters so that no contact can be made between the undertile lining and the tiles or slates to prevent wind up-lift forces from being transmitted to the roof covering.

• Ensure that the underlay provides free drainage into the eaves gutter and no trough is formed behind the facia board where water will collect. The use of the Monarflex Eaves Guard EG300 will prevent this from happening.

• Always install a separate eaves guard material at the eaves before installing the Icopal pitched roofing material and ensure it’s sealed using Monobond LT to the eaves guard material to prevent ingress of wind driven rain or snow.

• Do not lay the undertile lining over undried timber preservatives.• Terminate the underlay at abutments behind securely fixed and

wedged flashings by turning the underlay up 50mm behind the flashing and sealing to brickwork using Monobond LT tape.

• Reinforcing strips should be installed at all hips, valleys and ridges.• Counter battens or tile battens must be installed as soon as possible

to fully secure the membrane and protect the building from ingress of water and tearing of the membrane by wind.

• Exposed fixing of the membrane must be avoided, instead use large headed clout nails. The use of staples should be avoided. Fixing should be made into the rafter along the top edge of the membrane and covered by the overlap of the adjacent sheet.

• Ensure that the outer coverings of roof tiles or slates are installed as soon as possible following the underlay. The roofing underlay should not be considered as the primary waterproofing.

• Fix the outer covering of roof tiles in accordance with the manufactures specific instruction and ensure the fixing specification complies with the relevant Codes of Practise.

• Ensure that any provision for ventilation complies with BS 5250:2002 and NHBC guidelines section 7.2 S11.

• Ensure that the underlay doesn’t obstruct any ventilation paths.
