Today approximately 18 million, or 1 in 15 Americans experience Sleep Apnea, a sleep disorder involving the airway that disrupts a person’s sleep o en leading to excessive daytime sleepiness, irritability, overall poor health, and in some cases, even death. According to Dr. Je ery Doneskey, Oral Medicine Specialist and founder of e Sleep Apnea & Facial Pain Center in Bellevue, therapy for the disorder can be di cult.

“ e most common treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) involves the use of a medical breathing device called a CPAP, “ said Doneskey. CPAP, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure, delivers air through a mask worn over the nose during sleep in order to help maintain an open airway.

While CPAP can provide an e ective solution, Doneskey reports that there are signi cant reasons why some people are unwilling or unable to use CPAP. “For example, restless sleepers o en report having di culty with getting comfortable and keeping

the mask on during the night. Others may have trouble keeping a seal around the mask and must use head straps to keep their mouth closed while asleep,” said Doneskey. According to Doneskey, patients also express lifestyle concerns such as the inconvenience of taking CPAP along when they travel or go on vacation.

At e Sleep Apnea & Facial Pain Center, Doneskey reports high levels of patient satisfaction, compliance and success with a new oral appliance called “ e SilentPartner™, a jaw-friendly FDA approved oral airway dilator that Doneskey himself helped develop. According to Doneskey, e SilentPartner is a comfortable, fully adjustable mouth appliance that allows the jaw to be safely placed in the optimum position to keep the airway open.

In addition to keeping the airway open, e SilentPartner eliminates snoring in most patients while protecting the teeth of patients who clench during

their sleep. is appliance is so well received that according to Doneskey, more than 90 percent of his patients over the last 5 years are able to use e Silent-Partner on a full time basis.

Top 5 Reasons for Choosing Merrill Gardens:

8 | Sound Publishing | 2011 SENIOR HOUSING GUIDE

Celebrate with me because moment by moment you create your brain! How fun and delicious

can that be?

Remember this: You do NOT want your brain vol-ume to be “normal for your age.”

People lose 1-2% of their brain volume each year in the “normal course of aging.” With this loss they get more “Senior Moments.” What did I ask you to remember?

Do brain volume and smarts have to be all downhill from somewhere? It’s only human. Chimpanzees don’t. Some human elders increased their brain volume by 2% in one year.

Make a contract to do what they did because it can be free, easy, portable and fun. ey reversed age-related loss by 1 to 2 years while improving their memory. Can YOU give yourself this gi ?

All these wise elders did was aerobics 40 minutes four times a week. To increase the fun, they picked which machine they used.

Do you have to use a machine? I do because I reward myself. As long as I stay aerobic, I am free to read, write, meditate, socialize, or whatever makes

my heart sing. I get so engrossed in reading that time evaporates.

at’s an important point. With your healthcare provider’s counsel, do aerobic activities that bring you joy. Your brain thrives on happy. Videos guide wheelchair aerobics. If walking is your deal, early morning sunshine can add to your brain gains.

Your brain cells crave workouts that strengthen your memory. Change which hand you use to brush your teeth. Learn a new language.

Better yet, use a computer program that trains your brain while rewarding speed, memory and accuracy. Elders who used a science-based program increased their speed up to 300%, improved accuracy to match that of 24 year olds, and kept some gains ve years. Surf the net an hour a week. e future of mental health will include research-based video and computer games.

Busy brains burn more calories. Give yours carbs in fruits, veggies and whole grains. Protein and omega-3s are required to build, repair and enhance memory. So listen to your grandma. Eat nuts and fatty sh.

Drink cocoa to increase circulation so more es-sential foods feed your brain to improve memory, concentration and accuracy. Antioxidant bene ts of cocoa are three times better than teas and twice as good as red wine.

What do cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and black pepper have in common? ey might improve your immune response. When cinnamon extract was given to ies and mice with Alzheimer’s dis-ease, it reversed their plaques and helped them live longer plus act smarter.

Does that justify eating cinnamon rolls? Sorry. Not even laced with cocoa. Try chai.

Change can bring new opportunities

and signal an advent of exciting times ahead. But sudden change – such as deal-ing with a signi cant change in health or wellness of a spouse or parent – can add large amounts of unwelcome stress and confusion. Fortunately, senior service coordinators can help ease the confusion and pave an easier road for making major life changes.

A senior-focused service coordinator will

also be able to provide you with information about available services, whether the goal is staying in one’s home or moving to an as-sisted living facility. A reputable senior service coordinator will provide you with a free, no-ob-ligation consultation in your own home to assist you in compiling and

processing all the avail-able information. As you talk with di erent service coordinators, make sure that there are:1. No fees for in-home

consultations; 2. No referral fees for

the referred; 3. No con icts of

providers are licensed, bonded, and insured.Among the services

Dear Neuropathy Victim,I hear this from my new patients every day. You see, I get the worst cases of neuropathy pain just like yours coming to my of ce on a regular basis looking for help. If I can’t help them, they will have no where left to turn. They, like you, have been told, “there’s nothing that can be done for your neuropathy in your legs and feet” except to prescribe orthotics and block off the ability to feel the pain with seizure medications like Neurontin and Lyrica. Many have already suffered some of the awful side effects of these medications that are mistakenly called ‘nerve drugs’.

Many patients come in with Neuropathy caused by Diabetes. Some have had back pain, Stenosis, and/or leg pain caused by herniated, bulging, or degenerated spinal discs which compress the delicate nerves in your back that travel down to your legs. The chemotherapy that saved their life damaged these very long nerves. Now, they can barely walk a single block because of the neuropathy their cancer treatment left them with.

Your life, as so often I hear from patients, can only be described as a “living hell,” and you may be coming to the end of your rope due to CONSTANT EXCRUCIATING PAIN.

We have successfully helped thousands of Neuropathy sufferers, just like you, all over the country. It seems that no two neuropathy sufferers have the exact same experience but many share similar symptoms and we have seen them all.

“But, I’m not that bad.”Proper diagnoses is essential in peripheral neuropathy. RSD (re ex sympathetic dystrophy) and RLS (restless leg syndrome) are just two of the most common misdiagnoses. The sooner we get to work on your nerve damage, the more likely you will qualify for care and the better the result we will likely have. There is a point in neuropathy where the damage is so extensive that our NO DRUG, NO SURGURY approach can no longer be effective.

New Non Surgical Painless Laser Treatment Works Fast...About 2 years ago I learned about a new type of non surgical and painless laser treatment from Italy that was working wonders with severe, constant chronic pain. It had the ability to quickly increase circulation to an area and could reduce and/or eliminate pain in as little as 10 minutes. It was changing the lives of patients with severe debilitating pain in of ces across the nation. A recent survey taken from clinics Nationwide that utilize the treatment therapy we use, revealed that there is a 90.1% satisfaction rate from the patients receiv-ing the care.

Our Proprietary ProtocolWe are also very concerned about your cardiovascular function, heart attack risk and the free radical con-centration and damage in your cells. Our of ce performs cardiac risk assessments and free radical concentra-tion assessments before and after our treatment protocols to comprehensively evaluate and treat your whole body.

I make sure that by the end of the exam you really understand what neuropathy is and the severity of your nerve damage. You will know if I can help and to what extent we can expect your nerves to regain their function.

Often, after just a few treatments even patients with extreme and chronic pain of the worst kind are telling us AND SHOWING US, how their pain levels, their swelling, the discoloration in the feet has decreased, while their balance has increased. They are shocked, AND THRILLED.

Call our of ce right away for a Free Exam and First Treatment!

Sincerely,Dr. Kevin Polzin DC

“Doctor, I Can’t Go On Living With Neuropathy And All This Excruciating Foot And Leg Pain.”

Allen and his family’s life centered around dealing with Allen’s Neuropathy everyday.

On his rst day with us, 63 year old Allen told me about his 3 year history dealing with his neuropathy. It started with some numbness and tingling in his toes. His family physician said it was from wearing his shoes too tight. Numbness continued increasing slowly over months until his feet felt like they were lled with Novocain or like wrapped in bubble wrap. Suddenly, Allen had excruciating PAIN. During the day he could hardly walk because every step was sending shooting pain from his toes, up his legs. It felt like he was walking with rocks in his shoe. Sometimes it felt like tacks were pointed straight up into his arch.

At night, just the weight of his bed sheet felt too heavy, too hot, a burning he couldn’t get away from. Restless jumping of his legs forced his wife to seek sleep in the guest bedroom. This forced Allen to the Neurologist, who drugged him up with max doses of Gabapentin, Lyrica and Valium. These drugs made him feel like he was “out of his mind.” He was told that there was no cure for neuropathy and that pain management by drugs is his only option.

His pain and numbness continued to increase while taking the drugs and it was getting so bad that he was increasingly unsure about his footing and balance.

His podiatrist made him $300 custom orthotics which hurt so much he tossed them in the garbage after just one week. Neuropathy had taken over his life. With tears in his eyes, he told me that he was beginning to really wonder how long he could go on living this way.

Today after just one month under our care, Allen is happy to report that he is well on his way to recovery and has a light at the end of this very long tunnel.

In my 20+ years in the health care profession, I have never been so satis ed with what I do on a daily basis. Our team has the unique opportunity to share with people a real answer to a very serious and life altering, life steeling disorder.

At 96, Gene is my oldest patient.

He is a WWII Veteran and now after just 2 months of care, he no longer needs his walker, he sleeps through the night pain free and his balance has improved so much that he has less fear of taking a life threatening fall. He and his lovely wife of 70 years, are really enjoying their nal years without being bothered every minute, day and night, by foot pain, numbness, burning, and pins and needles.

We are often the last resort as we are 1 of only about 150 clinics nationwide that have been trained on very speci c protocols that regenerate damaged nerves. We can help nerves to function better and decrease and even completely remove all symptoms associated with the diagnosis of pe-ripheral neuropathy because of our very speci c, state of the art, breakthrough treatment protocol.

Bellevue Pain Institute’s uses the latest in tech-nology, offering neuropathy laser treatment and very speci c non surgical, non-invasive, relaxing reintegration and stimulation protocols of periph-eral nerves to increase their function quickly.

Once you have been evaluated fully and com-pletely, you will know, if you are a candidate for this new painless, safe and very effective Neu-ropathy Pain Relief Program.

Do your feet feel like they are lled with Novocain or like they are too heavy to carry?

Are your feet so swollen that the skin is shinning or discolored red and purple or your toe nails thick, white and crumpling with nail fungus?

“I can hardly walk on my feet because every step sends shooting, lightening like pain from my toes, up my legs almost to my knees.

“Every step feels like walking with a rock in my shoe or like a tack pointed straight in my arch.”

“At night, even just the weight of my bed sheet is too heavy, too hot and I have a burning I can’t get away from.”

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, making it an excellent time to talk with

your aging loved one about staying safe while online.

According to the FBI’s Scams & Safety Web page, seniors are highly targeted by scammers of all kinds because they are widely expected to have a nest egg saved up, own their own house and have excellent credit. Because children in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s were taught to be polite and trusting, scammers also expect older generations to be easier targets. Many scammers think seniors are even easier targets online because they did not grow up with today’s technology like younger generations did, and therefore scammers don’t think they will be as savvy about Internet safety and risks.

Seniors are also less likely to report scams. ey either do not know who to report a scam to, or they are sim-ply embarrassed. Whatever the reason, this tendency also puts seniors at higher risk.

e best way to protect your loved one from scam-mers is to educate him or her about what to look for. Here are three of the most common phishing scams targeting seniors, as listed by AARP:

Scams using the name of well-known companies, like Microsoft ese emails claim to represent a well-known company and may even look very much like the company by using company identi ers such as logos. ese emails will make some sort of claim as a precursor to asking for personal information, such as your logon password.

Scams that say you have won a lottery ese emails will tell you that you have won a lottery, even though

you did not enter one. ey may try to align with a well-known company to try to look credible. Again, these emails will make a claim to try to get personal information from you—such as that they need your bank account number to deposit your winnings.

Scams that pretend to be security softwareAlso known as “scareware,” rogue security so ware claims to be e ective security so ware, but does not actually protect the computer. O en, the so ware actually causes false security alerts—or worse, will lead you to make fraudulent trans-actions to gain personal information or take your money.

Seniors, like all Internet users, will also bene t from general com-puter security practices such as using antivirus so ware, setting up a

rewall, and never opening emails from unknown addresses or following links to unknown sites. e Department of Homeland Security’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month website o ers even more information about computer safety basics.

“Make sure your loved one knows that if they are scammed, they can come to you for help without fear of being judged,” said Ben Solomon, Owner of Right At Home Bellevue. “Many seniors do not report fraud because they worry that their friends and family may think they are no longer able to look a er themselves.” To report a scam, contact the FBI or submit a report online through the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

e Internet has predators, but it doesn’t mean seniors shouldn’t use it. “ ere is risk in everything we do. If we travel by airplane, we know that there is a small chance that the plane can experience engine trouble or worse,” as explained by Norton in its “Cyber Safe Seniors” guidebook. “If you follow some general rules and guidelines … you will nd the Internet a non-scary, fun, and enchanting place to visit.”

Back in the late 1970’s, while serving as chief policy adviser to my old friend Governor Dixie Lee Ray, one of the many tasks she assigned me was a visit to all the rest homes and retirement homes for the el-derly. It had been reported that the old folks were not being treated properly at the time.

My visits took me several weeks. I was in my late 50’s at the time and was deeply impressed --- and somewhat de-pressed --- by what I saw. Women and men in their late 80’s and 90’s were bent over and forced to maneuver in carriag-es and walkers, and at best, leaning on canes. But they were remarkably happy with their lot and smiled constantly in the many interviews I arranged.

ey may have been examples of the lame and the halt in our society, but they didn’t utter a single complaint to me. Nevertheless, I said to myself that I must never grow old like these forlorn people. Little did I realize that when I turned 90, my wife, Madeleine, and I would be forced to give up our home in Issaquah and nd a suitable retirement home to live out the rest of our lives. Alas! I was myself to join the lame and the halt.

My wife and I searched the eld, visit-ing several retirement homes in the Seattle, Bellevue and Renton area. e one we nally chose was Regency New-castle. And the reason that we selected it was the congenial sta ers, beginning with the pleasant marketing director, Kathy Kappler, the similarly pleasant manager, John Kotalik, and above all, the incomparable activities director, Shawna McGovern. I suppose other re-tirement homes have equally ne sta s, but we believe those at the Regency must top them all.

In no time, my wife and I found that we had certainly made the right choice. And what of the “lame and the halt” that I had encountered more than four decades earlier? Well, we soon dis-covered that these oldsters may have some physical disabilities, but they were

Life in a Retirement Home for the Elderly friendly, still bright despite their years,

and the epitome of great conversation-alists.

In other words, we found these resi-dents at the Regency to be of the high-est caliber of friends we had known. Now, I have wondered at the age of 92, that if we had not chosen to live at a home like the Regency, we would never have had the chance to meet these bright, interesting, and immensely like-able old folks if we had, instead, chosen to move in with one of our daughters.

Suddenly, we were in the midst of more than a hundred superb friends who never complained about their physical problems and who were a delight to be with. In addition the activities are endless --- with something for every-one, as the old saying goes. In fact, the Regency just recently won a national award for being the most enterprising activities homes for the elderly. Credit for that award should go Shawna for her incredibly frequent and interesting daily activities for the residents.

Once each month, the residents meet to discuss the activities, the excellent dining facilities, and all other issues. At these meetings, they are invited to voice their gripes, their wishes, and their likes --- whatever occurs to them. In addi-tion the executives who run the home provide a monthly meeting at which the residents are free to o er their problems, their wishes, and anything else.

In our comfortable two-bedroom apartment, my wife and I have resumed life as if nothing had changed. I have continued my writing, turning out daily commentaries for my website, www.louguzzo.com, and adding to the number of books I have written. In addition, I am pleased to deliver talks twice a week to the residents. Some of the talks are on the news of the day. And others are from my vast collection of jokes --- most of them jokes I had collected in my days as a speaker on the national circuit and as a speech writer.

e Regency has its own doctor in resi-dence, as well as a well-sta ed nursing crew. It also has daily exercise sessions, a swimming pool, a movie room, and other advantages. As one might say, it has all the pleasures of home.
