Dear Parents

On Wednesday we saw the much anticipated, annual ISSBA organized Battle of the Bearcats or BOB as it is morecommonly called. I am sure you have already heard much about this years action. Maybe you have heard the classcheers, or even seen a version on Youtube already! This year was another very successful BOB. This is a day off theregular high school schedule. It is organized by the students, for the students and serves to bring together each classand by design the entire school, under the auspices of Bearcat pride. Interestingly enough at the end of this yearsBOB there were a number of comments reflecting the idea that we need to invent/reinvent a Bearcat chant/cheer orsong that the entire school can use on these sorts of occasions and during events like the hosting of an IASAS event.

We are hosting IASAS soccer next month and I hope that we can show our IASAS sister schools real ISM Bearcat spirit.Maybe we will even have a new cheer in place for this event! Parents can also certainly play a part in promotingschool spirit and I hope that many of you have offered to open up your homes to host a soccer player for IASAS. Inaddition please come and watch our boys and girls varsity teams. The girls have won IASAS for the last two yearsand are keen to go for a three-peat performance this year!

For senior students, I strongly encourage you to make sure you have made a recent appointment with your counselorand that you are well organized with your college application process, including asking the relevant teachers fortheir recommendations. I know a number of seniors are considering early decision and early action applications andthese will be due towards the end of next month. Please check with our excellent counseling office and view theNEW counseling blog available at http://guidance.ism-online.org/

Schools like ISM are incredibly rich with opportunities and activities and I encourage all students to get involved.

Dear ISM Parents/Students:

IASAS Housing:

The IASAS Soccer housing letter is now available via parent bulletins, the ATAC office and it has beendistributed to our HS first season athletes via their coaches.HS Students participating in ATAC activities must house in order to be on a team. This is an expectedobligation and is mandated in the school planner and on the ATAC page of the school website.Housing visiting athletes is an integral part of the IASAS experience as all of our varsity athletes will behoused when they go away to tournaments during their HS career. In order for us to ensure we are ableto host successful IASAS exchange weekends and IASAS tournaments we hope that all members of ourcommunity who have students involved in ATAC activities will be willing to house for this fantastic tournamentfrom October 14-18. We require 160 housing placements for our visiting male/female soccer playersfrom the IASAS schools.

Expectations of host families:Pick up and drop off of visiting athletes each day to school. Visiting athletes can ride the school bus ifthat is how your children get to school.

Provide a comfortable place for athlete to sleep/assist the athlete with laundry of their uniforms.Provide a breakfast each morning and some evening meals. Athletes will buy lunches at school andmay have a team dinner together.Be available each evening to receive curfew calls from the athletes coaches around 10pm.Ensure there is parental supervision at home each evening you are hosting.

Questions will no doubt arise?What if I cannot house? You have to find a friend who can and get them to sign off on the form with full name,details etc.

What if I am away at the IASAS Volleyball/Cross Country tournament? You still can house as your parentsmay now have space in the house. Quite a number of parents housed last year when their children were awayat the IASAS Soccer event in Taipei.

What if I cant house for IASAS Soccer? You must commit to house for an event. Other options during theyear are: Pre-I Basketball in November and IASAS Art/Music in March. You should indicate on the return slipwhich event you will house for and have your parents sign off.

What if I live too far away? Alabang and Merville for example are not too far away! We have had a number ofstudents housed here at past tournaments. As a general rule we do not want visiting athletes to travel morethan 45 minutes to/from school. Please contact us if you have questions about the travel distance.

HOUSING FOR IASAS EVENTS IS AN EXPECTATION NOT A CHOICEWe hope you will support the 28 th Annual IASAS Soccer Championships. Our varsity girls will begunning for a THREE-PEAT and defending the gold medals they have won the past two years and weare anticipating a great home performance from our boys team as they strive for a medal this year.

For the Love is dedicated to serve young men and women todevelop their basketball skills. For The Love is an international

organization which has trained players of all ages in over twentycountries. Further, For The Love is equally passionate aboutseeing our players realize their potential as people. It is thebelief of For the Love that hard work and dedication go hand inhand with good morals and strong character in building leadersfor tomorrow both on and off the court.

FOR THE LOVE COACHES ATTENDING ISM CAMP:

David Bobalik- is a 185cm, 83kg point guard who hails fromPittsburgh, Pennsylvania. David was an honorable mention all-American his senior year of college. After graduation Davidcontinued his playing career in Lebanon as a foreignprofessional player. David has played professionally inLebanon, China, Taiwan, and Thailand, and has competedagainst more than ten National Teams from throughout Asia andAfrica. David has developed youth training programsthroughout Asia and has trained players of all ages and abilitiesin more than twenty countries. Presently David is still playingprofessionally in Thailand as well as training youth players fromvarious countries during the offseason.

Ikenna Nwankwo- is a 210cm, 125kg center who played hiscollege basketball at UCLA. While at UCLA Ike won a national championship and was also selected to play for the Nigerian NationalBasketball team. Upon graduation Ike continued his playing career as a professional player in Europe until 2000 when he was signed toplay in the NBA for the Dallas Mavericks. Ike spent the next four seasons playing in the NBA for Dallas, Houston, Cleveland, and LosAngeles. Ike also competed with Nigeria in the world Championships losing in the round of 16 to Dirk Nowitski and the German Nationalteam by a single point.

From the ES Guidance OfficeRethinking Parenting: How can rethinking our assumptions about parenting help us bridge the gap between what we doand what we want?

Last year at this time, the PS-12 counseling department introduced Rethinking Parenting as a replacement from SystematicTraining for Effective Parenting (STEP) groups that have happened in the past. Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback,counselors will be running a similar (not the same) course again this semester beginning Thursday, October 1, 2009 and finishingon Thursday, December 10, 2009. The group will meet from 8 until 10 am in room 1057.

This 9-session course will begin with exploring yourlong-term objectives for your children. Through selected readings,discussions, and activities participants will consider whether what they are doing will help reach these goals. Themes in thecourse include effective communication and relationship building. Additionally, this session will consider the topic of anxiety

where is comes from, and how it is perpetuated in our interactions and expectations.For course registration, please contact Myrna in the Elementary Office. Please note this is a 9 week course requiring regularattendance and participation. It is not open for drop-ins.

This year the Middle School and High School CCV clubs are teaming up with the Senior Class to run the Diaper Drive of thecentury, for the benefit of the children in CCV (Chosen Children's Village).

We are pleased to announce that this year organic biodegradable diapers will be on sale outside of the canteen from September14 - 18, during the MS/HS lunch period and from 2:00 - 3:00 PM. A pack of 30pcs (available sizes are L and XL only) costs P250.The Middle School Home Base and High School Class that collects the most diapers will win a dress down day.

Every year we run a diaper drive for CCV (Chosen Children's Village), as many of the children there wear diapers some or all ofthe time. With 80 children to provide for, diapers are always on the wish list! Last year we managed to collect 24,000 piecesand we aim to do the same again.Diapers of any sort will be gratefully received. We need all sizes, although they have no new borns there at the moment solarger sizes will be more appropriate. We also can collect cloth diapers, although they have limited resources for washing themeffectively. Adult diapers can also be used as some of the older children still use them at night.The diaper drive ends on October 2, 2009.

What is the Chosen Children's Village?The Chosen Childrens Village (CCV) is a home for orphaned children, in particular those with physical and mental handicapsand disabilities. The center is in Tagaytay and they currently have around 80 children. The organization has been running for 20years and for many of the children there, the village will be their home for life.Within the site there is a school, physiotherapy unit and nutrition center as well as houses for small groups of the children. Thecenter caters for all their needs, and is run purely on donations and gifts from benefactors. There is an active program to findpermanent adoptive families for the children, but many will be there long term. As the children get older they are beingtrained to help care for the younger ones and all the children are very independent within their ability.The mood at the site is very upbeat and the children make great leaps in development over time, due the amazing care andaffection they receive. They love to have visitors and get very excited when we show up.

Theory of Knowledge Presentations

On September 29th 30th, and October 1st, the Little Theatre will be filled with Theory Knowledge students completing their Internal Assessment presentations for the coursStudents will be presenting investigative reports on various topics from the realms of arhistory, natural science, and the human sciences. Some examples of the subjects beinexplored are:

SAT tests: Are they are a good indicator of aptitude?

Is the French government right to suggest that the burka should be banned?

Teen Video Games: Beneficial or harmful?

To what extent does altruism exist?

Is vegetarianism more advantageous in terms of health, social and ethical implications?

TOK students must explore the nature of their selected topic and critically evaluate beliefs and knowledge claims involved. These findings mustbe communicated clearly in their presentations.

We cordially invite parents to visit the Little Theatre and witness/discover what these students have accomplished thus far in the course. Eachstudent has been given a schedule and will present in one of the five sessions either the morning or the afternoon slot on the 29 th, or 30th ofSeptember or the 1st of October. Each student will be required to be in attendance in the Little Theatre for the full session so he or she may havean early arrival or late release depending on the schedule. Please be aware that students cannot simply arrive at the time scheduled for theirparticular presentation.

We encourage parents to drop in. It will give you a real sense of what the Theory of Knowledge course is all about and the opportunity to seeyour children in action.
