    Dear Parents:

As you may know, w e put t oget her our school calendar m ore t han a year in advance in order t o

help our communit y plan t heir vacations. This is not always easy, since t he locati on of special

hol idays is a myst ery at t imes and oft en not conf irm ed unt i l very close t o t he days t hemselves.

Under the previous administrat ion, there was a pol icy that al l publ ic hol idays would be moved

to the nearest Monday. Although this wasnt str ict ly adhered to, i t did at least al low us to plan

our calendar w i t h some degree of certa inty. More recent ly , we w ere t o ld t hat hol idays would

be al lowed t o fal l on t heir proper dat es whet her t hat happened in the worki ng week or at t he

weekend. For this reason, we did not plan for a hol iday to mark Eid-ul-Fi tr, which should be

celebrated next Saturday evening and into Sunday. However, we have just been told that a

procl amat ion has been signed t o denot e next Monday as a special hol iday in honor of Eid.

We are, of course, obl iged to fol low this mandate, and accordingly there wi l l be no school on

    Monday 20 t h August.

Having lost two days to the rains that fel l last week, I am unwil l ing to concede yet another

school day out of our year, and for this reason we shall begin the second semester one day

early on Monday January 7 t h instead of on Tuesday January 8t h.
